r7 It was my first and last trip to P-town. I honestly don't remember but it was setup like a gated trailer park, iit used to be for elder gays - some had lived in it year around but not after this guy bought it and the main building that also doubled as bar was essentially a narrow two story trailer with a roof deck and had a 60s style pool out back but at that time wasn't filled and was used as a safety hazard dance area. . . well, in and around it. The dude was really cheap so the property had fallen into disrepair. I think he ended up selling after that summer, though I wouldn't have been surprised if a mob of employees and customers did something.

Back in the early 80s I visited with some friends. One night a couple of us decided to venture to the docks to have a good time. Exactly. Fire Island is very limited in terms of what it has to offer. That is what keeps it more gay than Ptown, but also makes it a less interesting vacation spot.

However some NY gays love it, because it is basically taking all the NY gays and moving it to a party on the beach. A lot of fun if you are part of certain cliques.

But one difference with Fire Island is the big thing every weekend is the underwear party and you will see guys having sex all around you. It's not hidden away.

I went there every year since around 2001 with my husband. We were both about 24 then and together a couple of years. I had grown up going to P-Town as a kid so I have always known it well. He came from the Bible belt and had never seen anything like it or even knew places like it existed. We haven't been back since 2017 due to employment changes and timing, but miss it a lot. Never really saw much of the sex scene there, because we weren't looking for it, though it's never struck me as hard to find there if you are looking for it.

I went there about a dozen times through the years but was always in a relationship so never did the hook up scene. I have not been back in about five years largely due to buying a second home a couple of towns over from Ogunquit.

I have many many happy memories from P-Town. I used to go as a child with my parents in the 70s. My mother was an artist, and my dad a musician, also we were Portuguese, so it all fit pretty well. Was overwhelmed by the heat and humidity and the mostly straight crowds. When I arrived, it seemed tacky, and packed with tacky straights. The East Coast is relatively flat to me and the Atlantic seems like a bit of a pussy, as far as oceans go -- no waves, no excitement. What a mistake, I thought. Went to a Sunday Tea Dance at the Boat Slip (it's the blue motel with the pool, right?). Very friendly and fun -- and I'm a fat Elderbear. The DJ was playing my absolute favorite and obscure dance tunes from the 80's. The party ended early in the evening. Didn't see or do anything sordid.

By Sunday night, something magical happened: All of the straight people disappeared. Gays and Lesbians were everywhere. Stayed in an ancient, 9-guestroom B and B owned by a gay couple on Bradford St. The backyard garden area had a clothing-optional hot tub and an open bar for guests at night. Spectacular, gourmet breakfast was served in the morning in the same area. Discretion was advised for daytime, as it was a mixed crowd, but mostly older gay men. For my first night down there, I was fully clothed until after one guest offered me a strong cocktail, I said "What the fuck... when in Rome..." so I stripped and got into the tub with all of my surgical scars and everyone else for the rest of the evenings I was there.
