Joanie loves 80s hair

What was the show runner thinking by allowing Erin Moran to wear an 80s perm and makeup in a supposed period series? Nothing about her at all reads 1968. Even her clothing is wrong!

That used to bug me so much, OP! The guys were just as bad, wearing their shaggy over the ears haircuts that would have looked freakish in the 1950s.

The Waltons were also guilty of this.

Baio can't sing.

by Anonymousreply 2July 30, 2022 1:28 AM

Most tv westerns in the 60s did this. 1960s hairstyles on shows that took place in the 1800s.

Joanie Loves Chachi was set circa 1964, so she should have had a big beehive or bouffant or something

by Anonymousreply 4July 30, 2022 1:40 AM

Anson Williams and Donnie Most had feathered hair on "Happy Days" after 1976, as did Lynda Goodfriend.

by Anonymousreply 5July 30, 2022 1:44 AM

Apparently before "Joanie Loves Chachi" started, there came a point on "Happy Days" when Scott Baio and Erin Moran started dating and they annoyed everyone on the cast and crew alike by French-kissing and dry-humping constantly on the set

Yeah - that perm was Erin Morgan’s biggest issue for sure. Nothing wrong w her that tge right haircut wouldn’t have fixed.

by Anonymousreply 7July 30, 2022 2:08 AM

The saloon girls (whores) in the old westerns all had bouffants and really clean, can can dresses.

Her perm worked better in 80s Maine.

I also loved how in most 1950s-flashback or set other shows or movies, they just slapped a high-up ponytail wrapped with a handkerchief on the straight, bleached-blonde 1970s and '80s hairdos of any of the female extras, and then--voilà!--they're now supposed to be genuinely reflecting that era. ;)

What are you trying to say, r10?

I also doubt the real Pa Ingalls had romance-novel cover-worthy locks.

by Anonymousreply 12July 30, 2022 3:13 AM

I think she looks perfectly appropriate for the era!

by Anonymousreply 13July 30, 2022 3:46 AM

I never knew Erin Moran had such a nice voice.

by Anonymousreply 14August 5, 2022 2:29 PM

Erin was a decent singer, Scott was not.

Yeah, Scott was no range.

by Anonymousreply 16August 5, 2022 2:48 PM

I remember them being on some gossip rag in the early 90s saying they used to fuck 6 times a day on the set of Happy Days.

by Anonymousreply 17August 5, 2022 2:50 PM

All the Garry Marshall period shows by the end of the runs abandoned the periods they were supposed to be set in.

The last season of Laverne and Shirley had the Spinners guest star on an episode singing with Laverne. Only it's clearly their recent single and the 80's synths seem largely out of place on a show that's supposed to be from 1967.

by Anonymousreply 18August 5, 2022 2:52 PM

I love all those opening credits where they just spin around as their name comes up.

by Anonymousreply 19August 5, 2022 2:56 PM

Joanie was exceptionally unattractive.

Did people not notice that back then?

by Anonymousreply 20August 5, 2022 3:15 PM

She always looked scary and angry to me.

Scott baio was such a prick with the comments he made after she died. I vaguely recall an appearance Erin did in the 90s on Howard Stern that was very uncomfortable. She ended up crying and revealing she had been raped. It was very sad

by Anonymousreply 22August 5, 2022 3:36 PM

Erin clearly had mental issues that needed to be addressed. Henry Winkler and Ron Howard supposedly stepped up in private to try and help her (financially and otherwise).

Her brother played Michael Myers in the original Halloween.

by Anonymousreply 23August 5, 2022 3:40 PM

At some point she briefly accused Henry Morgan of assaulting her, I think back in the 1990s, though she later claimed she was high and making things up and it didn't happen. There have been rumors that Winkler helped her out afterwards, but I don't think it was ever verified. He publicly forgave her about it, I do remember that.

by Anonymousreply 24August 5, 2022 3:59 PM

Joanie was so talented and underutilized, she was fantastic in Hairspray.

by Anonymousreply 25August 5, 2022 4:27 PM

Didn't she say she was molested by a family member when she was younger?

by Anonymousreply 26August 5, 2022 6:01 PM

They weren’t even trying on the last season of Laverne and Shirley. The kids at the beginning all look like kids from 1983. Penny looked great that last season and they glammed her up.

It was obvious the writers on Happy Days were trying to idealize the 50s but knew they had to make it look like the 60s.
