Well, maybe you should't Thanks for bringing this up. As a Mexiphile This dilemma has me perplexed of late. I know there are plenty of Mexicans in the USA. But this is also about power because Mexico has become such a destination for Westerners. First worlders even poorer ones easily outspend the locals for everything and the structure of the town economically adjusts to discriminate against the locals.I have seen this happen in other Mexican towns. Towns that were once quaint and beautiful and now are tourist sinks. The locals avoid the town only to venture out for groceries and to go to work. They loose their own home town. This dilemma is really as old as economic imperialism, I get that but where is the Love. This creates frustration for the locals who come to bitterness over it all. Maybe the answer is to go if you want but remember your impact and try to do something to reduce or counter your impact.. Remove National identity from the picture and consider for a moment just the socio economic dilemma the locals face. I guess thats what i'm trying to get at here.

Very cute hores indeed, cheap holes.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 31, 2022 4:12 AM |
Can you speak Spanish, can you afford private security? United Statsians are good kidnapping targets, OP, and the locals don't want gringos that can't speak the language.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 31, 2022 4:14 AM |
R22 True Mexicans don't want tourists that don't care to even try to speak the language. Just like here there or anywhere. We here don't want A tourist that expects you to speak their language. This is not complicated people. I am disgusted with the hate here, it's bullshit. I have been treated great in Mexico. Most of the people most of the time are very kind and generous way more so than the USA land of plenty . Yes I'm as white as they come my ass is actually blue, and I do my best to speak the language, which I don't do that well. I took the time to learn some terms and basic polite inquiries and requests. It shows a respect that is really rewarded and appreciated same thing anywhere you travel.

is the altitude a problem? breathing?

Dutchie beat me to it. We lived there as well for two months, just earlier this year.
It's quite popular with New Yorkers who can remote work as in some ways the expat-heavy areas are quite similar to NYC (art & restaurant scene, cafes, shops, nightlife). It also has an LA vibe in terms of geography (valley), climate (except for its pronounced rainy season), and oh yes - cars cars cars.
It's the economic, cultural, and educational hub of Latin America. You will find people from all of the other continents there for one or more of these reasons. Very much a progressive, sophisticated, cosmopolitan megalopolis. For this reason, gays from all over Latin America (and these days the world over) flock there like they do Weho or Hell's Kitchen.
It's nothing like most Americans' experience of Mexico - tourist trap beach town / crappy (and yes dangerous) border towns / or more commonly what they see on Netflix.
Neverending things to see and do. You could live a different day every single day if you wanted.
And yes the men are hot. Not your typical low-class Mexican-American stereotype (they leave Mexico for the US). They pride themselves on looking good physically and style-wise. Some are way above many Americans' pay grade and don't need to be whores to Americans who think their dollar will buy the time of day from these guys. The catch though: they're quite charming and flirtatious as its their culture to be so.
On that note, Chilangos (Mexico City residents) are amongst the friendliest and happiest in the world. Even for a city of 20 million people. Similarly, unless you are CEO-level wealthy and influential, no you will not need a security detail, much less be able to afford one. No one is going to kidnap some Average Joe Gringo on vacation there -- they only like to kidnap ultra-wealthy Mexicans.
Yes, partner and I are working on finding our way back.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 2, 2022 1:30 AM |
I could never live in Mexico City -- the altitude and the air pollution would make me ill.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 2, 2022 1:35 AM |
CDMX is fabulous. Y’all are rubes with no pubes.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 2, 2022 1:39 AM |
I wouldn’t mind staying there for a month or so.
I’m working on landing a remote job so that I can work and travel.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 2, 2022 1:48 AM |
It's great for remote working. Lines up with Central time so you can work West and East Coast-friendly hours.
Also a a few hours away direct to most major US cities in case you need to return for work/social reasons.

No, stay away go to Miami instead. Mexicans hate you for your superiority. Its dangerous your gonna get killed. The internet is spotty and your meeting will drop.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 2, 2022 5:29 AM |
Erm, Mexico City has great culture, food, etc.
Miami has Ron DeSantis and rising sea levels.

[quote]No, stay away go to Miami instead.
How is that even the choice in some scabby mind? Did he think people were discussing Mexico City as a cheaper, up and coming Miami? That people were moving there as a sort of training wheels Miami, a dream too big?
In addition to all it's many attributes, Mexico City is not Miami, and (clue) it's not in the same country as Miami.
NEXT WEEK IN EXPAT ADVICE: "No, stay away from Paris, go to Peoria instead!"

I lived there last year for four months. It has many positives, but the time I spent there was enough. One of the best museum cities in the world, incredible parks - I think Chapultepec beats any urban park I've ever seen. Fantastic food scene, of course. Mexicans in general are more relaxed and polite than US Americans by a long shot. Many familiar stores make shopping fairly easy.
The downsides which drove me crazy - vendors absolutely everywhere, clogging the sidewalks, too many to the point of annoyance. Many of them riding around with loudspeakers late into the evening. The garbage men come around every day ringing bells and you have to physically bring your trash outside and give it to them, there are no containers outside. Pain in the ass. You can't drink the tap water so you have to buy plastic bottles or the large garrofons, unless you are in a higher end place that has its own filtration system. The crowds of people can be massive and overwhelming at times, especially in the metro - you might think it's only at rush hour, but I have seen it at all hours of the day. Sure you can take an Uber...traffic can be godawful as well.
The large police presence everywhere may make you feel safer, but I have also heard of many foreigners being stopped and asked for their documents or for a bribe. Never happened to me, but always a possibility. Security guards are intense. I don't enjoy being followed or stared at constantly in a museum or store. I know it happens to certain groups in the US as well, but white privilege doesn't go as far down here.

^ Spoken like someone who has actually been there.
Not your usual Datalounge Rooms with Mom keyboard warrior: "Don't go there, just go to Las Vegas instead, it's like going to New York, Egypt, Hollywood, Venice, etc. all at once!"
Yes, CDMX is one noisy busy city. You gotta love the hustle and bustle!

Spain is a European country. A white person attempting to speak Spanish is not at all impressive. Also, there are White Mexicans.
How are you a self-professed "Mexicophile" making statements this tone deaf?
