R7 I love LOVE Montgomery Clift. Wonderful actor but a troubled soul. I've read some excellent biographies and picked up some information from Elizabeth Taylor's comments about him, but he was a mystery. Beautiful man. That photo looks post car accident?

Loren Dean, from "Mumford" and "Billy Bathgate." Used to be a star in biggish Hollywood films films, then stopped doing work for several years, and now only gets small roles in small films and TV shows. I never found out why.
Jodie Foster. Has successful kept an extremely low profile in terms of talking about her private life for forty years after Chapman shot Reagan. We know she has children but don't know their biological fathers; we know very little about her private life.
Cate Blanchett. Never talks about her personal life in interviews; will only talk about her work as an actress.

Howard Hughes at the end of his life. He was a recluse, wore tissue boxes as shoes, didn't cut his finger or toenails, kept his piss in jars, never left his room, bought a hotel (The Desert Inn) so he wouldn't be bothered, never opened his drapes, died in his own filth.
I wonder what it was that caused him to snap, or whether it was just a lack of acceptance that he could never be as exciting or excited as he was in his youth, when he seemed to have it all - brains, boldness, charisma, money.

He had a long affair with french beauty Isabella Adjani, got her pregnant, sent her to Ireland to buy and furnish a house, and that's the last time she ever heard from him . Ever. Happens he was in NYC cavorting with Julia Roberts. Cue to a year later, Isabella learns of his marriage to Arthur Miller's daughter. She wants to take the high road and calls his NY apt. A woman answers. Isabella, thinking it's the bride, congratulates her. It's not the bride, it's his GIRLFRIEND, who doesn't even know he's married, and has a meltdown. He's a grade A psychotwisted fuck

my Ray Orbison anecdote: several thousand years ago ? I found my young self attending a party at Ray Orbison's widow 's place in Bulgaria. Yes Bulgaria. Alan Bates was there, along with several other big time names and Hollywood starlets. There was a shrine, a full fledged shrine dedicated to Roy, with picture, flowers, candles, the lot, and we had to dance and drink around the thing. It was very weird. I never understood A) what she was doing there. B) what WE were doing there...my crazy youth

Lana Del Rey—I used to think it was just a sad/enigmatic persona she put on, but the more I’ve learned about her and the more of her music I’ve heard over the years, I frankly don’t “get” her—and not in the sense that I don’t like her. I think her music is unique and refreshing—but I find her, as a person, extremely strange.

R10 She was found a few years ago. She went on Twitter, said she’s been a bus driver in Staten Island, she’s alive and well and then deactivated the account after she sent the message.
I guess she’s still a mystery as to why she left. She says she no longer sings, she hasn’t even bothered collecting her earned royalty checks (which is why people thought she was dead), nothing.

I vote for James Dean, who was mentioned upthread.
Some of the people mentioned here, like Garbo, Montgomery Clift, and Jean Arthur, have had good biographies written about them that explain a lot (albeit not everything) about their personal lives
But James Dean is another story. Though there are a number of biographies of him, not single one of them is good or reliable. The myths and legends about him have consumed the actual person (whoever that was).
And at this point his life and death have receded so far into the past we'll probably never know the truth.
