Guys, don't answer these questions.
Someone (probably Davida) uses a packet sniffer on here and brags about it, and she probably starts some of these threads so she can match up packets with the IP addresses she sees when she's reading the packets.
"Packets" are small files of information you send every time you connect to a website. A packet is being sent to Datalounge every time you click on a new thread or first log in. Someone with a packet sniffer that's monitoring traffic to DL could get your IP address pretty easily, as long as they knew where you lived.
So, in this case, let's say someone monitoring traffic incoming to DL saw a packet with an IP from NYC that had the same timestamp as R1's reply. Now that R1 has said where he lives, the person monitoring traffic now knows which packets coming into DL are from R1. From there, they can use the ignore function to keep track of what R1 says to an extent, all while knowing R1's ISP, IP address, and general geographic location.
You probably don't expect others to know that on an anonymous board, not unless you tell them.
I don't know that OP is the packet sniffer troll. I have no idea and am not accusing them.
It doesn't matter who is asking these questions. I'm sure some of these threads are just started by people bored and curious. However, if you post your location (or age, or alma mater, or what kind of job you have, or any personal information) you need to know that it can be linked to your IP address, which means you're a lot less anonymous than you thought you were.
Also, everyone on here should be using a VPN while connecting. I'm very serious about this.

I wouldn't have answered anything from OP anyway, as he's the poster constantly writing about Biden's poll numbers, and saying that being gay is wrong and we should all have a "heteronormative lifestyle," and that children who get Monkeypox caught it from groomer gays. A lot of prolific trolls post threads asking casual personal questions, which I always thought was about upping their "board karma," but perhaps it's more than that.

Yes, because we need to take our adoration of Babs and manky spincters to our graves.
You sound deranged R4. No one can ID you from a collective IP except the authorities with a court order. Take the tin foil hat off, and stop watching Mr Robot on repeat.

Packets often contain usernames and passwords, too. Look up "packet capture password" without the quotes and read for yourself.
Since the usernames on DL are email addresses, having that information alone could compromise your identity.
I don't know why you're always so threatened by someone suggesting that people take more security precautions online. You always say people are "deranged" and "mentally ill" when they suggest people use VPNs or unique passwords. Why would that offend you so much?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 26, 2022 7:09 AM |
Because R4/12, most sane people don't give a flying fuck about chat and gossip.
As for email addresses and passwords, only the elderly use their personal email addresses and passwords for public interactions. Do try and keep up! Especially with your meds.

[quote] only the elderly use their personal email addresses and passwords for public interactions
What you said is just gibberish. No one uses an email address unless they're elderly? If you have a way to log into DL without an email address and password, I'd love to hear about it.
Also, hackers will try to get into ANY forum where passwords, login info, and payment information is stored. That is basic internet security 101. It's embarrassing that you're trying to say otherwise.

[quote]Many people ask this question: Can Wireshark capture passwords? Well, the answer is definitely yes! Wireshark can capture not only passwords, but any kind of information passing through the network – usernames, email addresses, personal information, pictures, videos, anything. As long as we are in position to capture network traffic, Wireshark can sniff the passwords going through.
What the fuck.

PERSONAL email address. i.e. most everyone has email addresses they use for other purposes. I know people just like you, that invest time and energy trying to stay invisible to the Net – even if their lives are utterly banal. It's a comedy.

I live in a Right Wing Hellhole called Ohio. I don't know if you have heard of it but I recommend avoiding it. Our Trumper Governor cannot wait to sign the "Don't Say Gay" Bill....And Ohio is also changing teachings about racism---because they don't want the WHITE kids to feel bad when they hear about slavery....Do NOT move to Ohio. You will regret it because it is getting really bad. Crime is out of control too.
