I wonder why he didn't become a bigger star? Of all the cast members from Diner - Steve Guttenberg, Kevin Bacon, Mickey Rourke - Tim was easily the most handsome, by far. But the others went on to much bigger things in the 1980/90s. But I guess Tim's career has had greater longevity than the others, excluding Kevin Bacon.
Small jaw.

My favorite Tim Daly movie has to be Spellbinder, a yarn about satanists in Los Angeles. It captures the vibe of late 80s LA pretty well, in the clothes, cars, hair, houses. Tim looks ridiculously handsome throughout and goes shirtless repeatedly. A post-Top Gun Rick Rossovich stars as his best bud. A pre-Travolta Kelly Preston is the damsel in distress. It was rumored that they tried to suppress its availability in later years, either because the film's premise - that there is a network of cult members in LA that exercise extensive control - became a little uncomfortable given their association with Scientology, or because of Preston's nudity. Maybe there was some truth to it, since soonafter Preston's death, it became available on Amazon Prime.

I loved him in Wings.
He and Steven Weber had great chemistry.
I think he does well in comedy.
I also loved him in an episode of Law & Order: SVU called "Sin" where he played a conservative church pastor accused of being in the closet.
Tim is a really handsome guy, so I'll pretty much watch him in anything.

I was first struck by Tim Daly's beauty in I'll Take Manhattan where he played the elder Amberville child who tragically went blind but still managed to find his way around a gym to get a hot body.
Tim ended up hooking up with his sister Maxie (Valerie Bertinelli)'s best friend India West, the most beautiful film star in the world, played by Julianne Moore. India West was so beautiful it was poetic that she ended up with a man who couldn't see the perfect exterior but only inside her soul.
There was also another son who was a dirty gay slut who was the son of the evil uncle (the mother was fucking 2 brothers) and the evil uncle arranged for a hot porn slut to seduce him after a photo shoot and plant drugs on him.
And then he was hot 10 years later in The Object Of My Affection. I can totally understand why Paul Rudd was fucking him.

Judging by the photos - I say he was handsome but off centre. You see it now clearly in his old age. He looks like some old bird face man. The eyes are tiny and too close together - a straight line mouth with chicken lips and fragile little receding jaw. White boy made wrong. Like Michael Douglas. Douglas looks much better though. They must both be around the same age?

I was shocked to recently find out that he was cast in the Peter Gallagher role in Sex, Lies, and Videotape, but had to drop out when production delays created a schedule conflict.
Peter Gallagher has never been a huge name actor but has had an interesting career playing a range of roles.
Daly never really registered for me. I think he has been successful without ever being interesting.

[R31] If Kelly Preston was still with us we could ask her to corroborate. In one memorable scene in Spellbinder she sticks her hand inside Tim's pants. (Mr Daly wore light grey stretchy boxers, which I guess would have been quite on trend for the 1980s).

I just watched Wings on Hulu (or most of it, it left for Parmount before I could finish season 8). At the end it was running on fumes a bit, but it could be a funny show and the cast did have good chemistry. It did a good job of not going for the big sappy moments that was common for sitcoms back then, and often would do a fake-out that there was going to be a warm, tender moment, or a hug etc. and then go a different way, and showed that the characters cared for each other in smaller more subtle moments. They also did a good job with Joe and Helen in not dragging out their courtship. They got together pretty quickly the first time, once they dealt with their break-up and moved-on they did not do a bunch of hints or teases of them getting back together until they were actually ready to put them together for good. A pre-Monk Tony S. was pretty funny as the down-on-his luck Antonio.

I recently rewatched "Just the Way You Are," a Kristy McNichol comedy. Tim's small role is made funnier by his character's desperation to secure McNichol (dykey as ever but playing it straight) as his wife for bearding purposes.
First of all, he was so pretty then that even I noticed and I'm a lesbian. But I also liked that he avoided the affectations that were more common than not in portrayals of gay characters in the early '80s. It felt respectful and realistic.

Tim Daly's father was a homosexual.

Yes, here's the interview where he talks about his dad's sexuality and how his parents kept it from him until he was 19, for anyone who hasn't seen it. It's a dark tale that begins around the five-minute mark. His dad was essentially removed from his life in an attempt to keep Tim straight.

[R74] Thanks, I'll need to listen to it. I've also wondered what he thought about Kelly Preston. They starred together in the 1988 film Spellbinder, mentioned in posts above, and then later in another film in 2004. When she died he didn't post anything on his social media. by Anonymous | reply 111 | October 9, 2022 9:22 PM |
Sometimes it's just luck. Right time, right connections, right role.
And I think sometimes it's the personality. Some people are just not willing to do certain things you need to do or take advantage of certain opportunities to get ahead at certain times in their lives.
For instance, some actresses are willing to use their sexuality and bodies (not talking about casting couch just unnecessarily showing it off) to get attention or sell themselves. Look how many actresses get ahead that way. Maybe that's why some of the best actresses don't come into focus or look like they "blossom" later in life when the sexuality aspect is no longer important for their roles. They were probably always great actresses but they didn't sell the sex enough to get the chance to display their acting prowess.
Handsome male actors have this problem. They get so much work - if not all their work - because of their looks that they end up skating and some just never develop as good actors while others do but aren't appreciated until the pretty boy phase is over.
