Eydie Gormé had pipes

She was a punchline when I grew up - she and Steve Lawrence.

I guess Steve ate a lot of gourmet dinners.

Oh God, my grandmother loved those twats! Back in the sixties and seventies, I was dragged to Grandma's house and forced to sit through their godawful TV specials.

Yes, they both had good voices and top training, it's what they did with their voices that's made me loathe them for life.

"Eydie Gormé had pipes."

She hade the largest collection of meerschaums left of Las Vegas.

Or Reno.

Anyway it was some tacky place in Nevada.

Meanwhile, a Tennessee man had the largest collection of meerschaums east of Nevada. The collection is now housed in the Nashville Pipe Museum, because when you're in Nashville what you really want to do is visit some pipe museum.

I never minded them. When I was a teen in the 70s we liked them for their talent and kitsch.

Fantastic... I watch that and I remember why it's good to be alive. After a really bad week and with another stressful one coming my way, I cant tell you how I appreciate this on a Friday night! Thanks, OP

Oh, I love her. She had an amazing voice and I truly enjoyed their duets (not crazy about Steve solo). Her Spanish albums were pretty great.

She had a genuine warmth that not many of that generation of performers had.

They were always on Carol Brunett when I was a kid. This number is super kitschy but weirdly fun and entertaining.

Eydie Gormé was a sensational singer. Period!

by Anonymousreply 10July 23, 2022 2:49 AM

My Mom bought this album in the grocery store in the mid-60s. I distinctly remember Eydie's voice.

Eydie Gorme-"Do I Hear a Waltz", Steve Lawrence-"Girl from Ipanema", Johnny Mathis-"Misty", Doris Day-"Que Sera Sera", Barbra Streisand-"When the Sun Comes Out", Tony Bennett-"Autumn Leaves", Robert Goulet-"Real Live Girl", Julie Andrews-"I Feel Pretty", Chad & Jeremy-"Can't Get Used to Losing You", Andre Kostelanetz-"Java", Patti Page-"the Green Leaves of Summer", The Dave Clark Five-"Can't You See She's Mine".

I sang "Que Sera Sera" and "I Feel Pretty" around the house. That should have been a big clue!

How does she do that without having it piped through earphones?

by Anonymousreply 13July 23, 2022 2:55 AM

I preferred Steve Lawrence and Idi Amin.

I love her renditions of "If He Walked Into My Life". She's a belter!

I love this part from her Wikipedia bio:

[quote]She appeared on the Spanish-language radio program Cita Con Eydie (A Date with Eydie), changing her name from "Edith" to "Edie" and then "Eydie" because people mispronounced "Edie". She considered changing her last name, but her mother told her, "It's bad enough that you're in show business. How will the neighbors know if you're ever a success?"

Eydie at the top of her game!

I dare you not to be WOWED!

Far more talented than her husband.

Cultural misappropriation aside, this is one heck of a performance of this Gershwin medley. It gives a good idea of what their nightclub act was like. Note the part where she holds that note forever...while bending over to take a bow.

She was a great singer when she stayed away from the kitsch.
