Help me clean my brown toilet stains

White toilet.

There are brown stains at the very bottom going into the hole.

I've tried a Brillo pad but it only got a little of the coloring out.

I've tried putting bleach in and letting it sit but it didn't work.

Now, I just emptied all of the water and put only bleach in and tried scraping with a toothbrush but I don't think it's going to make it all white.

Any suggestions? Thanks

This happened to me when I moved into a new (old) condo.

I researched on the internet and read about Kaboom. It was the only thing that worked. The terlet also had a lingering, horrible old man smell, and this got rid of that, too.

by Anonymousreply 1July 14, 2022 6:43 PM

GOOGLE is your friend.

You just know DL responses will be rude and snarky.

by Anonymousreply 2July 14, 2022 6:44 PM

Are you not flushing?

by Anonymousreply 3July 14, 2022 6:44 PM

pumice stone

by Anonymousreply 4July 14, 2022 6:44 PM

Sounds like a job for Erna!

by Anonymousreply 5July 14, 2022 6:45 PM

I found the solution to this a while back right here on datalounge. Barkeepers friend toilet bowl cleaner. put it in, let it sit a few minutes, clean with brush. boom, gone. frankly amazing.

by Anonymousreply 6July 14, 2022 6:46 PM

Isn't Kaboom really toxic? I have a bottle somewhere, I forgot what I used it for, to clean the bathtub perhaps. I never used it again, that was a few years ago. You need to wear a mask when you use that stuff, seriously. After I used Kaboom, I felt like I couldn't breathe. Unless it was the original formula and it's a milder formula now.

How about those lime remover products. I think they are safe and they work.

by Anonymousreply 7July 14, 2022 6:48 PM

You have a toilet? Aren't you fancy!

by Anonymousreply 8July 14, 2022 6:48 PM

Lick it. Lick it good

by Anonymousreply 9July 14, 2022 6:48 PM

I'm a little jealous, too, R8

by Anonymousreply 10July 14, 2022 6:52 PM

A Brillo pad is going to destroy your toilet. Only use the kind that are specifically made for toilet cleaning, the "scratchless" kind.

by Anonymousreply 11July 14, 2022 6:53 PM

Baking soda

by Anonymousreply 12July 14, 2022 6:54 PM

I sometimes don't flush if I only go pee pees

I don't have a brush that fits in the bottom hole.

by Anonymousreply 13July 14, 2022 6:55 PM

1) Turn off the water supply. 2) Flush manually with bucket to get most water out bowl. 3) Old towel into bowl to sop up remaining water. 4) LIME AWAY from Dollar Tree. 5) Let soak for 15-20 minutes then scrub away with brush. 6) You dumb whore!

by Anonymousreply 14July 14, 2022 6:57 PM

I have a Toto toilet. The instructions to BKF TBC say don’t use on Toto toilet. Now what?

by Anonymousreply 15July 14, 2022 6:58 PM

1. Get a new toilet

2. Move

by Anonymousreply 16July 14, 2022 7:01 PM

Second rec for barkeeper's friend.

by Anonymousreply 17July 14, 2022 7:02 PM

I put in a new toilet in my old house. It took 10 minutes with help from a friend and cost $80.00 (Toilet and a new wax ring). Well worth it.

by Anonymousreply 18July 14, 2022 7:20 PM

A new toilet costs $80?

by Anonymousreply 19July 14, 2022 7:23 PM

It did 6 months ago. It was the standard one. I turned off the water and installed it myself after watching a youtube video. It was easy.

by Anonymousreply 20July 14, 2022 7:26 PM

New, used—what’s the difference?

by Anonymousreply 21July 14, 2022 7:29 PM

Third reco for Barkeeper’s Friend. The gel toilet bowl cleaner is good, but if that and scrubbing the stain doesn’t get rid of it, turn off the water to the toilet, flush it and sponge up the remaining water until the tank is as empty as you can get it and use a paste of the original powder Barkeepers friend and scrub it (wearing rubber or latex gloves: that shit is caustic) with a wire-handled brush angled so you can go further into the hole.

Funny you asked, OP. I did this last week and it worked perfectly.

by Anonymousreply 22July 14, 2022 7:32 PM

I 2nd using a pumice stone, OP.

by Anonymousreply 23July 14, 2022 7:33 PM

Sounds like you need a super heavy duty limescale remover.

by Anonymousreply 24July 14, 2022 7:34 PM

You also need to get rid of that yellow waxy buildup.

by Anonymousreply 25July 14, 2022 7:38 PM

Look outside. I think there's a girl scout coming down the street selling girl scout toilets.

by Anonymousreply 26July 14, 2022 7:39 PM

Put in one of those flaps that covers the nasty hole completely.

by Anonymousreply 27July 14, 2022 7:46 PM

Use an old coffee can.

by Anonymousreply 30July 15, 2022 1:43 AM

What are you talking about R27?

by Anonymousreply 31July 15, 2022 1:46 AM

OP You're a racist POS .

by Anonymousreply 32July 15, 2022 2:19 AM

O Pee here.

Thanks to everyone, especially the whore at r14. I was going to Amazon the Barkeepers cleaner but didn't want to pay $5.99 shipping and wait, so I walked to hardware store and got Lime Away. I drained the toilet water with a basket, an empty pill bottle, and paper towels. Put in the Lime Away for 15 minutes, used a hard scrubber with a handle, then poured boiling water in and scrubbed some more.

My terlet is mostly clean again! I'm no longer embarrassed every time I look at it.

I will probably get Barkeepers for future use.

by Anonymousreply 33July 15, 2022 3:22 AM

I would just paint it.

by Anonymousreply 34July 15, 2022 3:45 AM

A pumice stone would have been far less work, OP.

That's by far the best thing.

by Anonymousreply 35July 15, 2022 3:48 AM

Don't use anything that would scratch the porcelain finish. You'll just be creating more surface area for future stains. Hydrochloric acid will clean everything in the toilet. Read up on how to do it properly so you don't burn yourself.

by Anonymousreply 36July 15, 2022 3:54 AM

^^And then wash the hydrochloric acid down the drain where it will sit in your upper lateral sewer pipes and eat through them, not to mention polluting the water. Brilliant.

by Anonymousreply 37July 15, 2022 4:06 AM

R37, you don't fill the damn bowl with it. That's why I said to read up on how to do it properly. And, do you understand that water dilutes acid?

by Anonymousreply 38July 15, 2022 4:08 AM

Oven cleaner.

by Anonymousreply 39July 15, 2022 4:09 AM

You don;t need dangerous chemicals. A pumice stone would do it.

by Anonymousreply 40July 15, 2022 4:11 AM

A pumice stone will scratch the finish if you push too hard or use it dry. You dump HCL into your toilet every time you puke. It's not going to kill your pipes or the environment.

by Anonymousreply 41July 15, 2022 4:19 AM

Believe it or not, those brown stains are actually hard water stains, not shit stains.

by Anonymousreply 42July 15, 2022 4:22 AM

Did somebody die on it?

by Anonymousreply 43July 15, 2022 4:27 AM

Use 220 grit waterproof sandpaper.

by Anonymousreply 44July 15, 2022 4:33 AM

Pee on it!!

by Anonymousreply 45July 15, 2022 4:37 AM

OP here. I think I already used hydrochloric acid a few years ago, including my sink and it ruined the bathroom sink stopper thing. Turned the silver black so I haven't had a stopper in years. And the sink smells. I put it down the toilet and shower, too. Does is fizz when you put it in? Whatever I used fizzed. Maybe it was sulfur something or other. I'm not a homemaker.

by Anonymousreply 46July 15, 2022 4:41 AM

Throw a grenade in the hole and forget about it.

by Anonymousreply 47July 15, 2022 4:42 AM

R27 That's what the vicar said!

by Anonymousreply 48July 15, 2022 4:43 AM

You can get a new toilet from Lowes for 100 bucks.

by Anonymousreply 49July 15, 2022 4:47 AM

The flap is like a one way doggy door for poop.

by Anonymousreply 50July 15, 2022 4:48 AM

Oxyclean .

by Anonymousreply 51July 15, 2022 10:17 AM

I had no idea Barkeeper's Friend was toxic, thought it was a mild abrasive like Bon-Ami, but worked better.

I'll try the Lime-Away.

by Anonymousreply 52July 15, 2022 10:50 AM

It’s a rust stain. Check inside the tank for a rusty part. Fix it. Drain the tank after turning off the water. Use EZ-Off oven cleaner. It contains lye.

by Anonymousreply 53July 15, 2022 11:57 AM

No, it isn't a rust stain. It's limescale. I get the exact same thing. You just need to get a strong limescale cleaner and that will do the job (bleach won't work).

by Anonymousreply 54July 15, 2022 12:04 PM

I'm so glad I could help. On your knees, boy.

I have calcium buildup appear periodically in my toilet as well. What I do is put in a few tablespoons of citric acid, swish it around and let it sit for half an hour or so. Then I scrub, and add a few tablespoons of baking soda to neutralize the acid. Stains gone.

Generally this works best when you catch it early. When I had a lot of buildup I used Lysol Lime & Rust Removing toilet bowl cleaner which took care of it.

I do the citric acid/baking soda treatment at the beginning of every month now, even if I don't see any hard water buildup, just to stay on top of it.

by Anonymousreply 56July 15, 2022 12:50 PM

What are you eating, OP? You sound like you have demon shits. I hope you don't bottom.

by Anonymousreply 57July 15, 2022 1:38 PM

It is a rust staincaused by alot of iron in the water, the white hard stains are caused by too much calcium in the water.

by Anonymousreply 58July 15, 2022 2:45 PM

You could move.

by Anonymousreply 59July 15, 2022 2:52 PM

Lime Away is toxic too. Bar Keepers friend is much less caustic.

by Anonymousreply 60July 15, 2022 3:09 PM

No, it's not a rust stain. It's a shit stain.

by Anonymousreply 61July 15, 2022 9:23 PM

by Anonymousreply 62July 15, 2022 9:24 PM

Go to Home Depot and buy some muriatic acid. Turn off the water to the toilet and scoop out the remaining water where the stain is. Place a large wad of toilet paper on the stain and then soak it in the acid. Leave it there for a while then turn the water back on and flush.

by Anonymousreply 63July 15, 2022 9:29 PM

OP, she got rid of her stains too in the video. Maybe doing the same will help you make your toilet clean again? You're welcome.

Barkeepers Friend works really well on hard water stains. I live in a geothermal area and i use it all the time.

by Anonymousreply 65July 15, 2022 10:57 PM

In one of the loos in my home, the toilet is from 1942... I was able to completely clean away all those deposits with a Magic Eraser, and an acid-based cleaner. (after removing the water as described above)

My mum destroyed one of her toilet bowls using a pumice stone. Stupid idea. It's overkill, and as other posters have already mentioned, it destroys the surface glaze, and sets you up for more problems to come.

by Anonymousreply 66July 15, 2022 11:44 PM

It's impossible to scour down around the 'S Bend'.

Someone should invent an articulated scrubbing brush.

by Anonymousreply 67July 16, 2022 12:47 AM

Op are you talking about your toilet or your asshole?

by Anonymousreply 68July 16, 2022 12:53 AM

A 'P Trap' is worse than an 'S Trap' because the dirty water stays there for longer.

by Anonymousreply 69July 16, 2022 12:57 AM

That's why I mentioned that waterproof sandpaper (fine grit), above. Pumice stones don't really work as they're rectangular whereas the toilet has rounded surfaces.

Put a glove on and sand down (fine grit) the insides.

by Anonymousreply 70July 16, 2022 1:00 AM

White Out

by Anonymousreply 71July 16, 2022 1:01 AM

[quote] Pumice stones don't really work as they're rectangular whereas the toilet has rounded surfaces.

You've never actually used a pumice stone, have you? They wear down very quickly to fit the shape of the surface.

by Anonymousreply 72July 16, 2022 1:04 AM

New toilets are so expensive and hard to install.

by Anonymousreply 73July 16, 2022 1:05 AM

[quote]I drained the toilet water with a basket

HOW?

by Anonymousreply 74July 16, 2022 1:35 AM

Get Lysol toilet bowl cleaner. Squirt, leave overnight, and flush. No scrubbing needed.

by Anonymousreply 75July 16, 2022 1:51 AM

Try anal bleach for both problems, OP, your Bowl and your HOLE

by Anonymousreply 76July 17, 2022 1:33 AM

I appreciate all the tricks shared here. I had a similar problem and (stupidly) used pumice, and it did indeed create an ongoing problem.

by Anonymousreply 77July 17, 2022 1:59 AM

If this hasn't been said yet, it's a very easy fix OP. To to your hardware store and buy a 1 gallon jug of hydrochloric acid (aka muriatic acid). Pour 2 cups into the toilet and close the lid (it'll smoke a little bit). Leave it overnight. The next day the brown stain will either be completely gone, or a slight brushing will get rid of it.

by Anonymousreply 78July 17, 2022 2:02 AM

They weren't brown poo stains, they may have been because I frequently don't flush pee, but now I will.

r74 I used an empty cherry tomato basket/holder for the higher water, then an empty pill bottle (I suggest XANAX), then paper towels under dried.

r78 I said I previously either used some kid of acid on shower, sink, and toilet and it fizzed, but it totally ruined the metal stopper in the sink so I didn't use it again and don't recall it unclogging pipes.

by Anonymousreply 79July 17, 2022 7:48 PM

Sorry, that's not a problem I can help with OP.

by Anonymousreply 80July 17, 2022 8:34 PM

You never know, D.O. at R80, there may be some nutrition to be had by licking Lime Scale.

by Anonymousreply 81July 18, 2022 3:35 AM
