Colombia: Who's been there? Any recommendations?

I have been thinking about going to Colombia for a while now, visiting Bogota, Cartagena and Medellin.

To those who’ve been there: What were your experiences? Is Medellin worth the visit? Did you feel safe?

It’s like a breakfast taco topped with cocaine!

bulletproof vest?

"It’s like a breakfast taco topped with cocaine!"

On this, we can agree, cunt-in-law.

by Anonymousreply 3July 13, 2022 10:38 PM

I'd say rewatch Romancing the Stone. Surely it's an accurate depiction.

by Anonymousreply 4July 13, 2022 10:38 PM

Venezuela is more affordable.

by Anonymousreply 5July 13, 2022 10:46 PM

you're a drug mule?

by Anonymousreply 7July 13, 2022 10:50 PM

Ask Meghan McCain, OP.

by Anonymousreply 8July 13, 2022 10:54 PM

I haven't been OP. But if you're really in search of excitement, enter Colombia from Panama, via the infamous Darién Gap.

I was just there for 3 months. I liked Bogota more than Medellín, but it just depends what you are looking for. Bogota is huge, the weather is usually cool to slightly chilly, tons of excellent restaurants, lots of cultural offerings, more history, and a seemingly bigger gay scene. Medellin is warmer with a lot of lush foliage everywhere. It attracts a lot of straight male sex tourists and seemed rather lacking in the culture department. The centro of Medellín is scary, lots of junkies and sketchy people. The nicer neighborhoods have good shopping and amenities, but for me it's a boring city. Bogota feels much more cosmopolitan.

Thank you, R10! As for Medellin: You confirm what I already suspected

by Anonymousreply 11July 14, 2022 12:12 AM

I've been to Cartagena right before Covid hit, and I enjoyed it a lot. The climate is much warmer than the inland, and the atmosphere is very Caribbean. People were friendly and laid back. Only spend a week there with beaches, some sailing and some tours inland. I'd go again.

by Anonymousreply 12July 14, 2022 12:15 AM

OP, I loved Colombia. Bogota is an impressive and cosmopolitan city with no lack of museums, restaurants, gay bars, etc. I'll just say that I experienced some very wild times there.

I liked Medellin a lot -- it has a temperate climate that gives it the nickname the city of eternal spring -- but moreso for its surrounding and scenic small towns. The coffee-growing region is just right outside, and it is lush, green, beautiful, and very slow-paced.

[Quote]pass the dutchie to the left hand side

And get arrested for drug trafficking.

by Anonymousreply 14July 14, 2022 12:37 AM

then, eat the cocaine trees.

Colombian whores in a Europe are great, how are they in Columbia?

by Anonymousreply 16July 14, 2022 1:11 AM

So the “oh do discreet” fun times are….sex? Please details and specifics. I’m hearing about Colombia from lots of places and debating if it’s worth it just for the sex. Cities maybe - but more the men and whores.

by Anonymousreply 17July 14, 2022 1:26 AM

Lots of Colombian boys on Chaturbate.

by Anonymousreply 18July 14, 2022 1:29 AM

Isn’t it just across the street from Hudson University?

by Anonymousreply 19July 14, 2022 2:07 AM

R13 thank you for sharing. Do you agree with R10 that Medellin’s town centre seemed sketchy?

by Anonymousreply 20July 14, 2022 2:02 PM

I been there.

by Anonymousreply 21July 14, 2022 2:52 PM

How easy is it to get cocaine? How is the quality?

I've seen rentboys advertising on sites like rentmen.com and skokka.com - but they are NOT especially attractive. Maybe the hot ones don't need to advertise?

by Anonymousreply 22July 14, 2022 2:57 PM

I'd rather go to Chile instead. Colombia is full of skanky whores and they are so conservative. Yes, conservative whores.

by Anonymousreply 23July 14, 2022 3:02 PM

R22 please start your own thread about tips for monkey pox tourism

by Anonymousreply 24July 14, 2022 3:04 PM

R20, I felt pretty safe in Medellin the entire time I was there, but my memory is that the city center shutters down in the late afternoon, so I can see that area getting sketchy after dark.

La Candelaria in Bogotá is similar. Funky and touristy during the day, but the vibe changes after the businesses close and it gets dark. I didn't stay in that neighborhood for that reason.

by Anonymousreply 25July 14, 2022 8:22 PM

Many thanks, R25.

by Anonymousreply 26July 14, 2022 8:27 PM

"conservative"

There is more a divide between moderates and hard left.

xenophobia is higher than previous year.. most of which is focused on venezuelans and suspected or allies of... so, being apolitical is a strong recommendation.. Reactions to tourists is generally pleasant, there is some disdain as always but more of that is directed at the expats than tourists.

If you're a foodie, there are several b&bs on farms that offer cooking classes and often plug into community programs or kind of package tour sets. so, you have a semi-rural hideaway that also takes trips to the cities or several cities, with various theme events from cultural learning, exploring the markets, or just str8 up food tours. . . they're kind of basic, homestyle, more than fancy, but most usually have a contact with the finer establishments so you get a cooking class and meal with one of the nation's top chefs.

it's popular with those single tourists because it';s usually akin to a family stay but with a private often separate flat on the property with amnenties, often a group dinner, and good for those that want to plug in and immerse.

But of cities, like others, I'd agree on Botoga. . . but it's been almsot ten years since I've been there, have a couple friends in the area I keep up with. There are clashes between citizens and migrants. And if you are female and traveling alone, you should take extra precautions but tha tends to be true most places you'd travel. Even if a dude, it's generally better to travel with a group or make a contact, find a guide, even than to be obvious touris alone.

by Anonymousreply 27July 14, 2022 8:57 PM

Medellin is much more conservative than Bogota. Medellin voted for the rightwing (loser) candidate in the recent election.

by Anonymousreply 28July 14, 2022 9:23 PM

I didn't enjoy my stay.

by Anonymousreply 29July 14, 2022 10:15 PM

My older brother invested in a ranch in Columbia. His last trip to Columbia was to check on operations . Supposedly he suffered a heart attack one morning and was found dead at the age of 63.

by Anonymousreply 30July 14, 2022 10:47 PM

Your brother bought a ranch in NY R30?

by Anonymousreply 31July 15, 2022 1:37 AM

[R31] Columbine....
