Apparently, Page was an inexperienced actress when Foxx insisted she be cast as Esther and NBC wanted to fire her after some lackluster rehearsals. Foxx - an old friend from the chitlin circuit -threatened to walk if that happened, and spent time coaching her until her performances improved..
He must have known what he was doing, because Fred v. Esther is some of the funniest television ever created.

Lawanda was a filthy stand up comedian. Funny as she was filthy. I dig her and Millie Jackson.
