American Dad Is Just Roger

And Roger is just Seth MacFarlane doing a bad Paul Lynde impression.

You forgot the “BEARKING”.

Frau TV shows for frau people.

The fish is moderately amusing.

I always found American Dad funnier than Family Guy. I could live without either show still being on the air now though same with The Simpsons. I look forward to more Futurama and King of The Hill.

I love the Roger episodes, but usually turn it off if it's not Roger-centric.

I could never get into family guy. Almost every episode of South Park ( and the early episodes of The Simpson's) leave Family Guy in the dust in terms of sharpness and satire. I don't understand how Seth MacFarlane made it so far in entertainment. FG is just an assortment of disjointed and random cutaway jokes.

by Anonymousreply 8July 9, 2022 9:58 PM

Why do I feel like Rodger is Seth’s favorite voice?

by Anonymousreply 9July 9, 2022 10:04 PM

I think Stewie Griffin is his favorite voice and character. Oh damn, I’ve soiled myself.

by Anonymousreply 10July 9, 2022 10:07 PM

I was just binging on AD last week. I just love Roger, probably the most versatile character on tv ever. And that includes sexual positions and preferences.

by Anonymousreply 11July 9, 2022 10:07 PM

Family Guy was only funny to me as a middle-schooler and those were the first three seasons that Adult Swim reran. When it came back due to popular demand, it wasn't nearly as funny as the original run and kept getting worse and worse. All the characters got massively flanderized too. I really hate Lois and Brian now. Only Stewie and Meg stayed consistent. The recent seasons, it can occasionally funny once in a blue moon. If I need something on in the background while I'm, doing something else, maybe I'll turn it on just like with Two and A Half Men

Seth is definitely a hack. His live-action movies are embarrassing and a repeat of all the jokes he used up in Family Guy. Ted and that Western movie were cringe. He is a good singer though and I love his voice. So he's a better actor/singer than writer.

R6 - Camp Refoogie is a classic. So is Tearjerker and 1600 candles. The early years were hilarious, but yes, basically, it's always Roger.

Roger creates a sexpot persona and an office drone persona, and both get hired at a firm just so the latter can sexually harass the former for a big payday.

American Dad was funnier to me because it was more focused. As opposed to cutway gag approach to Family Guy and general lack of plot, character personality or continuity. American Dad's episodes usually followed the A, B and C plot and kept it consistent. Also American Dad was more satirical due to the political humor with Stan Smith representing a stereotypical right-wing American white male, his wife being an airheaded blonde who hates politics and conforms to gender stereotypes, his daughter a "communist" hippie who conflicted with both her conservative parents and his son being a complete dork.

Roger was comic relief but his alien species which included gender fluidity and complete lack of human empathy made him a perfect character for all the outrageous gags and insanity could be justified. Roger stole the show and is one of Seth's best roles where he puts so much emotion into his acting.

Overall that's why I found American Dad consistently better. I have not watched any recent seasons though. Does TBS still run it?

Yes, but it lives on best in your memory.

by Anonymousreply 15July 9, 2022 10:25 PM

I prefer American Dad, too. But Roger gets old real quick.

by Anonymousreply 16July 9, 2022 10:26 PM

The time Roger thought Stan was coming onto him so he lay on his bed while Toto's "I Won't Hold You Back Now" played. Funny!

In regard to quality of comedy & satire:

"South Park" > "American Dad" > "Family Guy"

My favorite "American Dad" episode(s) are the those that centered on Roger's alter-ego Ricky Spanish, as referenced by R7. It's all ridiculous, but that character is so over-the-top, it's hilarious.

A coworker at the time was very much into those shows (and other TV series ilke "Married...With Children", which we both grew up with, own and love), so we'd discuss them, and apply many of those jokes to the people and situations we encountered everyday.

He still calls me "Ricky Spanish", when I see him. I don't miss that job, but I always enjoyed working with him.

He's just a water down version of "Meg" from "Family Guy"

Same for Paul Lynde

The Cleveland Show was the worst one. Not at all funny. I actually liked sensible but dull Cleveland as a foil to dumb Peter, crazy Joe and pervy Quagmire. TCS just turned Cleveland into an annoying Peter clone and gave him a family that was a mix of the Griffins and Smiths. Long-suffering wife, rebellious whiny daughter, fat loser son and bratty toddler son. Just lazy recycling there.

by Anonymousreply 23July 10, 2022 5:07 PM

The white neighbor who fell on top of the toddler and nearly smothered him in one episode made me laugh. And how she kept saying she had the Diah-bee-tus. That's pretty much the only thing I remember. But overall it was crap. Wasn't the voice actor white? Oh dear.

What?! Either you've never seen one minute of the show, or you're out of your mind.
