I was sick and had a fever and now I have a fucking cold sore
I’m so upset. I went to bed and woke up with a cold sore on my upper lip. It’s been years since I’ve gotten one!
When I was in my early 20s I would get one every time I got sick. The slightest fever and boom, a cold sore. It’s been years since that’s happened. I figured it stopped mostly but this time it came back.
Worst part is that I was supposed to go out with the guy I’m seeing tonight but now I’m not gonna go.
I hate this.
Does anyone else ever get them? It’s like a curse.

You probably have Monkeypox, OP.

Yes, I get them on my lower lip when I forget to close the window at night during the colder months.
Try taking a zinc supplement regularly to stave them off, it's fantastic for the immune system in general.

How many cold sores are preceded by a fever?

R3 thank you! I will do that.
I would get them in my 20s whenever I got the slightest illness. I hated it. But over the last few years I haven’t gotten them at all. But today that changed lol.
I’m just thankful it’s one on the top lip. I remember one time I got two on the upper lip and one on the lower. That’s the first time it ever happened.

Herpes is vile. I'm sorry, OP.
I worked with a teacher who would get them all over her lower lip when she got too much sun. Usually she used massive amounts of lip balm with sunscreen but forgot one time when she spent a day outdoors and turned up to work with her lower lip completely covered. Horrible and looked so painful. I doubt she forgot again after that.

OP you need to start eating cruciferous vegetables every day. Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Kale, etc. They have an enzyme in them that inhibits the herpes II virus. I used to have cold sores at least once every 8 weeks (or less at times depending on my stress level). I found out about cruciferous vegetables and I started eating some every day. After about 6 months my fever blisters almost stopped completely. I'll still have one on a very seldom basis but it's always a very minor one that is gone within 3 days. Trust me it works.

Do some people have tendency to get cold sores? Are they common? I can't remember ever having one in my life.

R13 You have to have acquired herpes simplex type 1 (HSV1) orally. It's the same virus that causes genital herpes, and you can acquire it on your mouth or genitals/anus.
Herpesviruses including herpes zoster (chickenpox) lives forever in your central nervous system. When you are first infected, you get skin lesions ("sores"). When the virus has run its initial course, it gets "knocked down" by a healthy immune system and coils up into a dormant state in your body. When your immune system is suppressed—when you are stressed or have some kind of inflammation or get sick—it opportunistically comes out of hiding and travels along your nerves and breaks out as lesions on the skin. The reason for this is that you are the host organism and when you become sick or compromised, it's an opportunity for the virus to cause lesions that then make the virus transmissable to others.
If you haven't acquired herpes simplex, you won't get cold sores.
Also, some people who do acquire herpes simplex seem to flush it out of their systems altogether over time. But generally, it lives in you forever.
So does H. Zoster, which upon initial infection causes chickenpox but in its later emergences causes shingles. The reason older people usually get shingles is because the older you get, the less well your immune system works, and the latent herpesvirus has the ability to come out of hiding and cause lesions.
Herpes lesions itch and sting. That makes you scratch them. When you scratch them, you get contagious fluid from them on your hands and in those areas, which facilitates exposure to other people.

[quote]If you haven't acquired herpes simplex, you won't get cold sores.
That's not true:
According to a recent report by the World Health Organization, 2 out of 3 people under the age of 50 have Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1), more commonly known as oral herpes. That's a staggering 3.7 billion people with a (currently) incurable virus.
Once herpes infects a new host, it travels along nerve cells to live dormant in their roots. For most HSV carriers, that's the end of the story. Most people with HSV never have any symptoms. If they do, they're often quite mild -- tiny eruptions of the skin that could be mistaken for ingrown hairs. Cold sores and other herpetic blisters can be painful, and some HSV carriers will have frequent outbreaks, but this isn't the case for most people.

R15 Everything you pasted there supports the (true) statement you're trying to refute. Herpes simplex causes cold sores. If you don't have it, you won't get cold sores.

Go get Abreva, BUT, by the time you actually see it, it won't help that much - maybe speed up healing just a little.
You can get Valtrex for super cheap online now - you have to take it the very minute you think you are getting one, and it prevents it from getting all gross. It's a freaking godsend.

OP, I hope you feel better soon. I feel lucky to have not had the sores, since I’m sure, like most people, I probably carry the virus too. I’m occasionally plagued with canker sores instead (every time I go to the dentist).

For most HSV carriers, that's the end of the story. Most people with HSV never have any symptoms.
^ what part of this can't you understand?
People are often HSV positive without ever manifesting symptoms.
That's a long way from If you haven't acquired herpes simplex, you won't get cold sores.

All I know is that people w/cold sores scare me. In my experience, the ones with it are the same ones sharing their eating utensils. They're the ones trying to kiss you on the lips. They are the ones sleeping around. No thanks. I do not want to be branded a whore. I'm not a whore, yet because I'm gay, people assume I'm one.

Abreva is even more $$$ now. I passed a display at a store, and a tiny, tiny tube is $23-$24 now? I recall it was $16-$18 20 years ago.
Doesn't an ultra tiny yellow and red jar of Carmex seen at CVS checkout do as well as Abreve? And just a few dollars. I used it years ago and recall it seemed to help most or all times.
BUT...aren't we supposed to tell a partner if we've ever had a cold sore? Most keep it a secret, right? Illegal and possibly a cause for arrest if don't divulge it when not an obvious outbreak?
Even at age 30 years ago, I had no idea it's a type of spreadable herpes! A female friend who gets them explained that to me and I was dumbfounded. Never learned it in sex ed!
On Grindr, can one truly aim STD free even if rarely get a cold sore?
If getting sucked at a gloryhole, can't complain as one is being reckless to begin with, right?

Take oral meds....Zovirax is one. You have to take when you first feel one coming on, but they build up your immunity over time. There is a prescription topical cream that does the same thing.
Lysine supplements also help stave off break outs.
