I agree but I feel none of those examples were marketed exclusively to tweens and teens. Frank Sinatra sorta predates the marketing concept of a "teen-agers" and his music was enjoyed by a wide audience. Beatles had just as many adults and young men listening to them as they had young girls. The Jackson Five was Motown and made music enjoyed by adults not exclusively for teen girls.

Janet is interesting because she was an actress whose first few albums were just to capitalize off her success on Diff'rent Strokes and Fame, those two albums were bubblegum pop. Once she made "Control", she marketed herself as just a mainstream pop star targeting teens and young adults and Janet does not acknowledge those first two albums at all. Not dissimilar to Kylie Minogue and Alanis Morisette.

Destiny's Child was a TLC clone and just like TLC, Xscape and En Vogue were throwbacks to Motown girl groups and their music was not just exclusive to teenagers either. Just like New Edition, Brandy, Usher, IMX, Boyz II Men and Aaliyah were not just "kids stuff" either. Their whole image was teens singing "grown up R&B music."

I think Britney, NSYNC and Backstreet Boys were different in that they were clearly made for "tweens" and none of their stuff had any appeal to an older audience at all. They were no different than the Menudo, New Kids on the Block, Tiffany and Debbie Gibson in that regard. But they still were promoted not only on mainstream radio, mainstream publications and MTV but also on kids networks like The Family Channel, Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. I don't think the previous teen idols ever got that mainstream embrace by so many wide platforms that extended their longevity and made them crossover.

So many are saying his concerts weren't selling, but looking at his site he is playing 2 nights at some spots. The promoters don't add a second date if the first isn't selling well.

Once again, go look at the tickets available from Ticketmaster (link at r300). The second nights are markedly worse than the first. Even in Toronto, which is at the end of the month.

It's just weird he'd have the nerve to show up in Costa Rica, when the point of a cancellation like this is to either going into hiding or have your PR people "leak" to the press that you checked yourself into a hospital.
