Which young actress today could play Scarlett O'Hara?

Vivien Leigh's performance as Scarlett in GWTW is one of the greatest in cinema history, but it's inevitable that one day the book will be turned into a miniseries. Which known actress could come close to Leigh's magnificence as Scarlett?

by Anonymousreply 92July 17, 2022 2:57 AM

Someone American.

by Anonymousreply 1July 8, 2022 1:16 AM

None.

by Anonymousreply 2July 8, 2022 1:20 AM

I don’t think there would be much appetite among today’s actors and filmmakers for telling a story lamenting the loss of the southern plantation way of life. Though there would probably be plenty of Americans who’d want to watch it.

by Anonymousreply 3July 8, 2022 1:26 AM

Florence Pugh could

Ronan is a great actress but not really sexy enough to pull off this role

by Anonymousreply 4July 8, 2022 1:27 AM

O'Hara would be approached differently today. She wouldn't be the heroine in her own story. It would be more of an ensemble that would relay various perspectives. Ronan would be an appropriate choice. Anya Taylor-Joy and Florence Pugh would be strong choices as well. Elle Fanning would also work for those who would clutch their pearls at the idea of a non-American playing the iconic character.

by Anonymousreply 5July 8, 2022 1:32 AM

MISS Viola Davis

by Anonymousreply 6July 8, 2022 1:50 AM

Egad, none of those low-energy emos.

What's Andie McDowell's daughter's name? Maybe her.

by Anonymousreply 7July 8, 2022 1:51 AM

Actually, R7, that's a good suggestion. She's fiery and raw. And she sprung from the loins of a Southerner mother, etc, which gives her some "cred" as well.

by Anonymousreply 8July 8, 2022 1:52 AM

R7, Margaret Qualley. She'd be fantastic. She's been excellent in everything I've seen her in so far.

by Anonymousreply 9July 8, 2022 1:53 AM

Joanne Whalley.

by Anonymousreply 10July 8, 2022 2:00 AM

No one...no modern actress has the talent, fire, looks, drive or ambition to play Scarlett O'Hara 2022. They just do not have the "IT factor" to play Scarlett.

by Anonymousreply 11July 8, 2022 2:04 AM

Catherine Zeta-Jones.

by Anonymousreply 12July 8, 2022 2:10 AM

None of OP's choices are beautiful enough although Florence Pugh is probably the most conventionally attractive.

Ronan is by far the best actress of the group.

by Anonymousreply 13July 8, 2022 2:14 AM

R13, the opening line of Margaret Mitchell's novel is "Scarlett O'Hara was not beautiful..."

by Anonymousreply 14July 8, 2022 2:25 AM

I think Ronan would be ridiculous in that role. Nothing about her says femme fatale, and no amount of acting can surmount that.

by Anonymousreply 15July 8, 2022 2:30 AM

The incomparable Vivien Leigh is Scarlett O'Hara for all eternity and beyond, she has no equal - past, present or future - SHE is Scarlett O'Hara, so fiddle dee dee...

by Anonymousreply 16July 8, 2022 2:40 AM

Nena Leaks or Lens Dunham

by Anonymousreply 17July 8, 2022 2:44 AM

Does Jennifer Connelly have an actress daughter?

by Anonymousreply 18July 8, 2022 2:45 AM

Flo looks formidable in a hoop skirt.

Linda Lavin

by Anonymousreply 20July 8, 2022 2:49 AM

Kristin Davis maybe 25 years and 2 pounds of fillers ago.

by Anonymousreply 21July 8, 2022 2:53 AM

I could play Scarlett better than any of these menstruating hags...

As long as there's food stamps, I'll never be hungry again!

by Anonymousreply 22July 8, 2022 2:54 AM

Would Emma Corrin shave her armpits for the role?

by Anonymousreply 23July 8, 2022 3:19 AM

Raven Symone.

by Anonymousreply 24July 8, 2022 3:21 AM

None, and nobody wants it.

If you read the book, it is on board or at least presents at face value the idea that black people were "like children" and better off under the guidance of their masters.

Very much like the MRA trolls are trying to say today, right now in the "men are the problem" thread.

by Anonymousreply 25July 8, 2022 3:38 AM

SJP would be great

by Anonymousreply 26July 8, 2022 3:45 AM

OP did you leave out Miss Jennifer Lawrence on purpose?

by Anonymousreply 27July 8, 2022 3:49 AM

R17 that photo must be 'shopped. Florence Pugh is quite attractive but she has no neck.

by Anonymousreply 28July 8, 2022 3:55 AM

Kaya Scordelario

by Anonymousreply 29July 8, 2022 4:55 AM

R29 who is that girl? She's gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 30July 8, 2022 4:55 AM

Southern American actress

by Anonymousreply 31July 8, 2022 5:04 AM

Florence Pugh beautiful to be Scarlett O’Hara?

Omg.

All these actresses listed as basic white women.

Vivian Leigh was stunning. Her nose, her cheekbones, her jawline, her eyes, her small pout. And she was an incredible actress.

None of these actresses come close in beauty or talent.

Florence Pugh looks like a kindergarten teacher to me. She’s got a moon face and absolutely no stand out features. She looks even worse as a brunette which is why she stays blonde mostly.

by Anonymousreply 32July 8, 2022 5:13 AM

Damian Hurley is the only one with the fire and music.

by Anonymousreply 33July 8, 2022 5:32 AM

I think of Scodelario as a British actress

by Anonymousreply 34July 8, 2022 5:43 AM

OP, are you drunk?

Kristin Davis is 57 years old and made out of plastic.

by Anonymousreply 35July 8, 2022 6:34 AM

So? Scarlett is 160 if she's a day.

by Anonymousreply 36July 8, 2022 6:56 AM

I'm an amazing character actress and can always change my appearance - don't let my age, that old broad Joan Crawford, or my ungrateful daughter BD tell you otherwise.

I think ScarJo is still young and beautiful enough. But she’d probably insist on playing Mammy 🙄

by Anonymousreply 38July 8, 2022 7:02 AM

The prestige picture could attract Mo’nique as Mammy and Beyoncé as Prissy.

by Anonymousreply 39July 8, 2022 7:19 AM

Florence Pugh is way too big big boned and butch to play Scarlett.

by Anonymousreply 40July 8, 2022 7:22 AM

R31 That would be ME, thank you!

by Anonymousreply 41July 8, 2022 7:26 AM

It's fun to speculate but the truth is no studio or producer would touch this material in today's climate and attempting a woke treatment would be insane.

by Anonymousreply 42July 8, 2022 7:28 AM

R33 that face, are you casting for a non-binary version O'Hara?

by Anonymousreply 43July 8, 2022 7:30 AM

R29 I agree, I’m the poll I’d say Emma looks the closest

by Anonymousreply 44July 8, 2022 8:28 AM

[quote]No one...no modern actress has the talent, fire, looks, drive or ambition to play Scarlett O'Hara 2022. They just do not have the "IT factor" to play Scarlett.

All of that is true, but there's something else too: all of the actresses listed (well, except Kristin Davis) are too girlish. None of them reads as womanly, the way Vivien Leigh did.

by Anonymousreply 45July 8, 2022 8:39 AM

Margot ROBBIE or Emma Stone.

by Anonymousreply 46July 8, 2022 9:02 AM

Olivia Holt... in a modernized and sanitized musical version for hulu, no doubt.

Thomasin McKenzie - has the aesthetics for period pieces... and could likely pull it off with a proper dialect coach.

Camila Morrone.... also could fit the aesthetic but has a crack baby voice.

Sophia Lillis... would be an interesting choice but very subdued energy.

Ariela Barer.... needs an acting coach.

I agree with those saying no one today could do it, due to lack of beauty, talent, and "it" factor. All but one of the women who originally auditioned were lacking in the same areas. Everytime I think about it, or watch the film, I'm so relieved and grateful that the casting of Scarlett ultimately happened the way it did. Especially after seeing the screentests of the other actresses who were considered.

And as amatuerish as Paulette Goddard was, she was quite close for a bit at one point. This could've easily been just another largely-forgotton film from the 1930s (even despite the soaring popularity of the book at the time) but Leigh WAS Scarlett, and Selznick (who worked tirelessly on every conceivable detail of the production) knew it, and cast her. It may have been the single greatest decision of his career.

Kristin Davis for Aunt Pitypat

Yea!!🤗 I literally have no idea who that is!

So I say Olivia Colman!

by Anonymousreply 52July 8, 2022 11:52 PM

R50, Ben Affleck.

by Anonymousreply 53July 8, 2022 11:56 PM

Neely would be easy to cast. Scarlett is hard. I can't think of one suitable actress.

by Anonymousreply 54July 8, 2022 11:59 PM

No, r51, there's only one possible Aunt Pittypat.

Just like in 1939, I’m sure there is the perfect actress to portray Scarlett but she is not a Hollywood star, yet.

by Anonymousreply 56July 9, 2022 12:02 AM

Ashley Judd or Natalie Portman when both were younger would have been interesting. But I mean before they each developed insane egos you can see on-screen.

by Anonymousreply 57July 9, 2022 12:03 AM

That list is ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 58July 9, 2022 12:05 AM

Ezra Miller as Melanie Hamilton

by Anonymousreply 61July 9, 2022 12:15 AM

Elliot Page as Beau Wilkes.

by Anonymousreply 62July 9, 2022 12:15 AM

None.

by Anonymousreply 63July 9, 2022 12:17 AM

Jennifer Lopez IS Belle Watling

by Anonymousreply 64July 9, 2022 12:17 AM

R55 only if you cast Sen Tim Scott as Uncle Peter.

by Anonymousreply 65July 9, 2022 12:20 AM

Lizzo as Scarlett and Christine Ebersole as Mammy in The Wiz version of Gone with the Wind:

Lost Windz

by Anonymousreply 66July 9, 2022 12:22 AM

Delta Burke

by Anonymousreply 67July 9, 2022 12:26 AM

I wasn't sure whether Clarence Thomas should be Uncle Peter or Big Sam but I finally decided he'd be best as Tara's evil Yankee overseer Jonas Wilkerson with his wife Ginni as the white trash Slattery woman he marries.

by Anonymousreply 68July 9, 2022 12:30 AM

Connie Sellecca. "As God is my witness, I'll never go without Geritol again!"

by Anonymousreply 69July 9, 2022 3:23 AM

Jizzy Jennings and her crockpot full of Yankee cheese!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 70July 9, 2022 3:29 AM

by Anonymousreply 73July 9, 2022 2:20 PM

To R70, but her "dirty parts" will fall out again full of GASP! New England cheese& Union soldiers, they will deflower the womanhood of the South.

with Will as Ashley

by Anonymousreply 81July 10, 2022 7:08 PM

Will should do it. He can give a mean slap and an excellent trembling lip cry.

by Anonymousreply 82July 10, 2022 10:54 PM

I can't think of any actress who has Leigh's magnetism and would make audiences believe Rhett would lust after Scarlett all those years when she was so cunty to him. Elizabeth Taylor might have been able to play her in the 1950s, but I can't think of anyone else in cinema history.

by Anonymousreply 83July 17, 2022 12:14 AM

Thankfully due to wokeness this film will never be remade

by Anonymousreply 84July 17, 2022 12:16 AM

Gabourey Sidibe.

by Anonymousreply 85July 17, 2022 12:23 AM

No one would touch this right now, which is good, because instead of simply being a modern retelling with an equality-minded perspective. it would be a total woke disaster. A future generation will have to take it on.

by Anonymousreply 86July 17, 2022 12:31 AM

In the late 1980s a movie reboot was in discussion by a major studio with Sheena Easton being though of as the lead. Like a Scottish singer would have been casting choice,
