Reminds me of the scene in Godfather 2 (yes, I know Caan's not in G 2) where Hyman Roth (Lee Strasberg) is sitting at home in Florida. Michael (Pacino) comes to visit and talk. Strasberg hangs his leg over the armrest. It just seemed like he was "acting" to me.

Acting wise, I think Tuesday Weld is really good at “listening” in that scene. Whether it’s just a technique or she really feels it, a lot of emotion and attentiveness comes through when they cut to her in his speeches. And she cries in response to what he’s saying rather than on her own lines, which is where most actors would dig in.
She also does a very natural thing when she wipes her tear away. Most performers are so proud of themselves for producing tears that they let them roll down their face for the camera to study. But in real life people wipe their eyes and face when crying. It’s instinctual.
She’s a very interesting actress. You can see why she was offered a lot of big parts… which she, curiously, almost invariably turned down.

Just because someone is a great acting teacher, it doesn’t mean they’re a great actor, themselves.
R71 doesn’t even say Strasberg was bad… just that there’s a somewhat forced aspect, physically, to one of his scenes in one of his movies.

[quote]R84 Tuesday Weld, so talented and gorgeous and unique: what a waste of a career.
It’s hard to know exactly what Weld’s story was, because she didn’t give a lot of interviews compared to other stars, and she says that when she did, she’d change facts around to amuse herself. And the one full length biography that was done on her (that I know of) is kind of slapdash.
But I think one thing with her was, she got burnt out on the film industry early on. She was kind of the Brooke Shields of her era, in that she was dumped into modeling at a very, very early age in order to support her family. So by the time she got (immediate) fame on TV and then in movies, it’s almost like she was already over it.
She did roles that interested her, but it doesn’t seem like competing for parts was ever her thing. Plus, she apparently didn’t go in for an extravagant lifestyle - so it’s not like she had to earn big bucks to stay out of debt, like some stars.
Her career may seem wasted to us, but she didn’t want a bigger one.

[quote] But I think one thing with her was, she got burnt out on the film industry early on. She was kind of the Brooke Shields of her era, in that she was dumped into modeling at a very, very early age in order to support her family.
Which makes me sad, because God knows she should never have been put in that position. Her father was lathrop Motley Weld, of the Weld family of Boston, one of the best-known and most prominent of the Boston Brahmin families. Former Governor William Weld of Massachusetts is from that family, and there's a Weld Hall in Harvard Yard. Tuesday's father died when she was four, and her mother (Lathrop Weld's fourth and last wife) used her only daughter to get money, since the family refused it to them. She had a miserable childhood, and her mother put enormous emotional pressure on her to try to force her to make up for her other disappointments in life; Tuesday responded by having affairs with much older men, which made her mother furious. When Tuesday turned 16 she marched out of her mother's house and bought her own. She says she's mnever been right because of her enormously fucked-up childhood.
Her memorable name was actually a nickname--her real name is Susan, but a very close cousin on her mother's side could not pronounce "Sue-Sue" correctly and called her "Tu-Tu"... eventually everyone else called her that, and then extended it to Tuesday. I can only think of the parody of her on "The Flintstones": "And now, here's that exciting young starlet, Wednesday Tuesday... or is it Tuesday Wednesday?" (Wednesday Addams's name was inspired by Tuesday's, of course.)

Another variant of Cohen is Kagan (like the SCOTUS Justice Elena, whose ancestors were Russian Jews): it's a Russian variant which uses G instead of H because the latter doesn't exist in Russian.

I don't think he was miscast in Misery, either, but he wasn't the first pick. Lots of the big male stars of the day were offered the role but they found it too emasculating.

I remember some awards show where Caan went up to accept the award for somebody who wasn't there. The presenters of the award were Sonny and Cher. The hostility between them you could cut with a knife. When Caan came onstage to get the award and Cher kissed him. REALLY kissed him. Passionately. Not once but twice. With Sonny standing right there. The audience actually reacted in astonishment (Wooo!) when she locked lips with him the second time. Caan seemed to Cher's sucking his face in stride but was nervous accepting the award; he seemed flustered and inarticulate. The whole thing was very, very awkward.

Jessica Lange is interviewed alongside others about her days as a young model in NYC and Paris in the early 70s. I was struck by her loyalty to her friends and colleagues from that era, many of whom were lost to AIDS. She was charming and sweet and eloquent and not remotely diva-ish. Very winning.

Caan and the actor who played Carlo (Connie's cheating / beating husband) didn't get along. Actor was Gianni Russo. Caan started out not liking Russo for some petty reason, then added some unscripted, extra beating into the scene, including the part where Caan is biting Russo's hands.
[quote] “Sonny and I had a problem all through the movie, on and off the set.” It kicked off because of Russo’s knowledge of the area and the residents they were filming in. According to the star, it “p****d [Caan] off” just before their big on-screen confrontation.
[quote] “We choreographed that scene for about a day and a half, Jimmy got a little aggressive, I would say, and he improvised a few things like that little billy club he threw at me when I came off the stoop. He hit me right in the head with that, and then he throws me over the railing and he’s biting my hands, when I crawl out, he literally lifted me up with his kick, none of that was supposed to happen.”

[quote]though I don't know how she got along with Goldie and Diane in The First Wives Club
Short answer: Midler did NOT get along with her co-leads. Or anyone else on the TFWC set. A number of people (like featured actor Bronson Pinchot) have spoken out about how abrasive, unpleasant, and unprofessional Midler was on set, fighting with the director, bullying other actors, fighting for the laugh lines.
Her part was thankless (compared to Goldie and Diane), and she was "styled" to look hideous in the film. But it doesn't still doesn't excuse her behavior.
It sounds like any number of people would avoid working with Midler again, on anything.

Believe me, costume crew on film sets see the worst behavior imaginable. In a long career like Caan's, you'd inevitably see all sorts of behavior depending on the situation. It's the rare star who's nice to everyone all the time.

“I have four wives and five kids,” he also told Esquire, jokingly responding to a question about the difference between sex and love. “I apparently don’t know the difference.”
And as far as sex, he bluntly admitted: “For the record, I’ve never been in an orgy.”
With an eye for the ladies, Caan also said: “I don’t think silicone makes a girl good or bad,” but he certainly had some bad experiences with the opposite sex.
“I’ll see a beautiful girl walking up to me and I’ll think, ‘Oh, my God, I can’t believe my good luck.’ But then she’ll say, ‘Where’s your son?’ or ‘My mother loves you.'”
Scott even spent time at the Playboy Mansion with his father while he lived there, with the elder Caan telling People in a 2010 interview that he’d “have Scott bring me girls.”
The actor took another long break before tying the knot again, marrying Ingrid Hajek in September 1990, according to the Daily Mail.
The marriage lasted for four years before they separated in March 1995, and they had a son, Alexander James Caan, while they were together. However, Caan’s marriage to Hajek was possibly his most controversial, as he was accused of having an affair with madame Heidi Fleiss, who claimed she had a relationship with the actor in a 1994 Vanity Fair article.

[quote]R249 I don't think she could have summoned the appropriate naivete for Rosemary Woodhouse
Polanski had a unique approach to casting, in that he went almost entirely off an actor’s physical appearance (at least as a jumping off point.) He would have illustrations done of his vision of the characters and give those to his casting director. (Though they ended up hating each other, he wanted Faye Dunaway for Chinatown because she really could look like a glamorous society lady from the 1930s.)
The initial concept for Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse was that they look like uber-healthy, sunshiny Americans… blonde, wholesome, midwestern. This would contrast with the dark world at the Bramford that envelops them. For this reason, Robert Redford was Polanski’s first choice for Guy, and Weld his first choice for Rosemary.
Mia Farrow is superb as Rosemary, but I can see where Polanski was going with envisioning Weld in the role.
