In the early 2000s, he did a photoshoot for a magazine, where he gave a home tour and was photographed with his tiny pet dog. I recall a nautical theme. I can't remember what publication it was, and I've looked and looked and for the life of me, I cannot find any reference to it online. At all. I don't know that he actually came out in it, but it was very, very gay.

I remember when that show was on the air, I saw him on the cover of the Enquirer or Globe or one of those crazy tabloids. He was hugging Jaleel White in the picture, with the caption saying Veljohnson was gay and outed. Urkel looked really uncomfortable in the picture, like it was a forced embrace.

Back when the show was on, there was a lot of gossip about this issue. The Urkel character was cute, but it became waaaaay too much. The character's stardom outside the show was overshadowing the rest of the cast. JoMarie Payton had enough of all the garbage & side-plots with Urkel, and left the show halfway through its last season, they replaced her with another actress. It was awful. I caught one of those late- season 9(?) episodes on tv the other day and wow did it stink.

Similar thing has happened on other shows, one character becomes "the thing" and the rest of the cast has to stand there for thirty seconds every time they enter a scene because the studio audience is going bonkers. Of course, it should be said that from what was said, Jaleel enjoyed his success but did not enjoy how the attention was affecting his costars.
