R22 To be fair as a straight white guy I don't think I was the intended audience for Girls -- admittedly I started watching it because a movie buff friend told me it was a good show and "culturally important." I'm just a few years younger than Lena and for me, the highlights of the show were her giving voice to cultural issues broadly faced by millennials. The show started to lose me when it got more personal and less 'generational.'

R22, I liked Girls as well, or thought I did, and so watched the full run again recently. It's a bit of a love/hate thing to be sure (and season 4 was pretty miserable start to end), but there are some great moments and some insight, and it does stand out from other things in film and TV. Was Hannah a likeable character? No on whole, but sometimes yes. Was she written to be a likeable character? No, I don't think so, and she doesn't walk away the hero, the good one, or even the one that you root for. Such unflagging honesty has a tendency to be a little bit admirable and a big fat measure of unwatchable, but she and her awful characters were like people many of us know well, and might describe as flatteringly or unflatteringly depending on the day. It's a mixed bag but succeeds on a lot of levels for me. Watching it again I was more impressed than the first time around where it was more an element of surprise. There's something about Girls that makes me want to see her succeed in other work.

Her interviews and insights outside scripts don't interest me, and the stripped down dare-you-to-body-shame-me photos are both awful and a little sad.
