CNN: White House now consulting Debra Messing on policy
Seriously. Yikes.
"Debra Messing was fed up. The former “Will & Grace” star was among dozens of celebrity Democratic supporters and activists who joined a call with White House aides last Monday to discuss the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.
The mood was fatalistic, according to three people on the call, which was also co-organized by the advocacy group Build Back Better Together.
Messing said she’d gotten Joe Biden elected and wanted to know why she was being asked to do anything at all, yelling that there didn’t even seem a point to voting. Others wondered why the call was happening.
That afternoon, participants received a follow-up email with a list of basic talking points and suggestions of Biden speech clips to share on TikTok.
The call, three days after the decision eliminating federal abortion rights, encapsulates the overwhelming sense of frustration among Democrats with Biden. It offers a new window into what many in the President’s party describe as a mismanagement permeating the White House.
Top Democrats complain the President isn’t acting with – or perhaps is even capable of – the urgency the moment demands.
“Rudderless, aimless and hopeless” is how one member of Congress described the White House.
Two dozen leading Democratic politicians and operatives, as well as several within the West Wing, tell CNN they feel this goes deeper than questions of ideology and posture. Instead, they say, it gets to questions of basic management."

I don't know what's worse.
The Biden administration including Deb Messing on phone calls.
The White House thinking Deb Messing has any influence among the general population. Do they thinks she's huge on TikTok?
Or that the Biden administration has become so incompetent that it's even lost Debra Messing.

Messing is in one of the three groups (Hollywood, Wall Street, and Silicon Valley) that currently control the Democratic Party, so it’s not unexpected that she be part of this. The donors control the political party, not the rank-and-file.

I don't care about Messing. But this administration is absolutely lethargic. This is a very unique time in American history; we are on the verge of losing our democracy. I am not saying that Biden can necessarily undo everything, but he needs to appear more decisive and as a fighter, and yes, with a sense of urgency. Unfortunately, he doesn't have either trait.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 5, 2022 7:53 PM

I agree they seem lethargic but I blame the Democrats in Congress and the Senate. Biden's signature plans got bogged down in disloyalty or whatabout. It created the impression they aren't doing anything. And even I'm getting tired at Joe's shouting routine at the mic. I mean it. I'm not kidding.

R23 What can Biden do? If you end the filibuster, then turnabout is fair play and Republicans will do the same and undo any Dem legislation when they get the majority back. Same issue with expanding the Supreme Court - if Dems add Justices then, Repubs will do the same and add even more. It’s a perfect storm of blocking Obama’s nomination, RBG dying, and Trump getting 3 Justices appointed to the SC. The Court is lost for at least a generation. I don’t see anything that can change that.

This is another situation for which I wish I could see who praised Messing, the person, to the skies because of her tweets against Trump, but when she does something they don’t like, say she shouldn’t get involved. The people who not just liked but fully embraced nutjobs as long as they criticized Trump, have no integrity.

R30 Liz Cheney is indeed vile. There's a loud and vocal portion of democrats and media types who are pathetically eager to throw themselves at any right wing scumbag who disavowed Trump ( once it was convenient for them of course). Why don't they save that cheerleading and support for people who were ALWAYS left leaning instead of some creepy war mongerer who realized that Trump was too disorganized and controversial to further their personal goals. Too many fair weather liberals are whores eager to service the other side rather than stand by their own through thick and thin. The absolute worst was when I saw positive coverage of that demented John Bolton creature. All because he jumped off the trump ship at the last minute and made a few disparaging remarks about him.
Messing has always been an unabashed liberal. If she feels she can be of any help I have no issue with her involvement. I wish dems would give her the praise and support that they heap on right wing turds who say the right lines for MSNBC.

R37 Remember when the left hated Mitt Romney until he turned against Trump after Trump refused to give him a job in his administration? As Trump claimed, Romney "begged like a dog" for a job but he rejected him anyway.
The left immediately hailed Romney a hero and still do to this day. The same guy they were saying wanted to murder your grandmother in campaign ads.
John McCain got the revisionist history treatment when he spoke against Trump during his dying days. All the shit he'd said and done over decades was washed away simply because he "stuck it to Trump".
These people would worship Hitler if he'd lived long enough to criticize Trump.

[Quote]What can Biden do? If you end the filibuster, then turnabout is fair play and Republicans will do the same and undo any Dem legislation when they get the majority back.
Not someone defending the filibuster. Wow, governments pass policies once they're elected? And new governments pass new policies once they replace the previous one? Welcome to a functioning representative democracy as it's practiced in every other country.
[Quote]Same issue with expanding the Supreme Court - if Dems add Justices then, Repubs will do the same and add even more.
So, you're saying that Democrats will be better off until Republicans regain all three branches of government, and then no worse off than they are right now after that. I'm not sure you're arguing what you think you're arguing.
[Quote]t’s a perfect storm of blocking Obama’s nomination, RBG dying, and Trump getting 3 Justices appointed to the SC. The Court is lost for at least a generation. I don’t see anything that can change that.
Clarence Thomas is 74 and Samuel Alito is 72. Antonin Scalia died at 79. I can think of many things "that can change that" even before getting into discussions about court reform. How long do you believe a generation lasts?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | July 5, 2022 10:52 PM

Get rid of that fucking filibuster. If Republicans change everything back once they regain power, then people will have an incentive to vote to return power to their power. As it is now, everything stalls and dies in the Senate, and nothing ever gets accomplished…so people stop caring and don’t vote.

I still think abortion begins and ends with the Judiciary. Even if you passed a federal law making abortion legal, the Supreme Court ruled in Dobbs that it’s up to the states to decide. I have no doubt this Court would overturn such a law. There isn’t the political will or consensus to get a Constitutional amendment passed. The civil rights we once thought the Court guaranteed are being eroded. This Court has shockingly shown that it will not follow precedent. What Clarence Thomas has signaled in his opinion on revisiting sodomy, gay marriage, and birth control scares me.

It wasn't Biden's fault but it sure was the fault of the useless democrats who didn't have a supreme court strategy, couldn't be bothered to sue McConnell when they weren't given their supreme court pick, and being too lazy to ratify roe. And now being too lazy to ratify the right to birth control

Many of these people complaining that Biden hasn't done anything seem to be forgetting the following:
- Passed a 1.2 trillion infrastructure package, fixing our bridges and roads, airports, public transportation, inational broadband internet access and such? Securing new jobs and easing our supply chain as well.
- Unlike tRump and his MAGAT/QAnon loony toon denialists, actually acknowledged COVID and responded passing a 1.9 trillion dollar COVID relief bill. Remember all those lovely checks you received to help you out while you were unemployed? Remember the free COVID test kits, free COVID vaccines?...
- Appointed 41 new federal judges, the most since Regan.
- Lowered unemployment from 6.3% down to 3.9%
- Responded to soaring gas prices and price gouging from the oil companies and has been consistently lowering the cost per gallon for the past several weeks in a row now.
Those are just to name a few.
Also as others have mentioned, the Roe v. Wade was a decision by the Supreme Court. tRump appointed 3 of those judges which gave them the ability to do so, not Biden. When they start going towards reversing gay rights and illegalizing the rest of us yet again, are you going to blame it on the fact Biden was elected as well?

Just as many people died, funding for covid is nowhere, and they are just trying to run out the clock pretending if they don't acknowledge that over 300 people are dying from it every day and 100k are being diagnosed (about a quarter of which will get long covid), then they can say it's over.
I will believe infrastructure when I see it.

Continuing r64's line of thinking
Many of these people complaining that Biden hasn't done anything seem to be forgetting the following:
Has pushed the US and Russia closer to nuclear war than any time since 1962
Has been directly called out by the White House Press Corps for undermining the First Amendment
With five weeks explicit warning was unable to piece together a coherent strategy on Roe past some general platitudes
Has doubled the price of gasoline for millions of working people
Has doubled the prices of basic foods for families
Has so far cumulatively spent over six months on vacation days (188 days as of early June) , a rate higher than either Trump or Obama
While inheriting THREE developed Covid vaccines on his Inauguration Day has presided over 800,000 deaths (and hundreds more each day )
That's a lot to have accomplished in just 20 months.
