Bad Overnight Guest
I had a terrible overnight guest this Fourth of July weekend.
He stayed Sunday and Monday night. He is 6'2 and probably 400+ pounds. He has been a friend for a long time, but I worry about his health.
I keep my apartment 77-78. Within the first thirty minutes of being in my apartment, he made a comment. He then asked if we could turn it down to 75. I did.
At night, he was a little loud and I heard him getting up a lot. The next morning he said he didn't sleep well because I kept my apartment unbearably hot.
We went out for lunch. The portions were big and I asked for a to go box. I said the portions were way too big to finish. He rolled his eyes. He was thinking about getting ice cream. We then went for a walk through Hermann Park. He complained on the heat and the distance the entire time. For dinner, I through out several suggestions, and he didn't seem interested.
When we got back, he said he would give me $20 to put my air on 74 because it was so unbearable for him that he was dying.
Also he stunk.

R3 Typo. Sorry

Um, you’re an awful host. You have to consider what your guest can and cannot do. Lower the air for three days!

Punch and delete = dump his fat, sorry ass.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 5, 2022 5:43 PM

Why the hell would you go to Hermann Park? The heat index was 113 yesterday. If he's from a non-swamp-like city, then of course he was hot. I'm not fat and I like the indoor temperature a lot lower than 77-78.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 5, 2022 5:44 PM

You SUCK as a host. I agree. YOU INVITED your friend, presumably. Humur him a bit. Indulge him with cold air. How much pleasure does he get in life? Are you EVER generous?

He invited himself. He is from North East Texas, too. Not that big of a climate change. We had plenty of water and Hermann Park has a lot of shade. No I am closeted and he is straight.
I did humor him and I dropped my air to 75.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 5, 2022 5:49 PM

Keeping the heat in the apartment at the level he can endure is absolutely your duty as a host. He's clearly not in good health.
I would find the stinking unbearable tho. I don't know if I could have someone over again who stank.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 5, 2022 5:51 PM

Never mind. I don't know your house guest.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 5, 2022 5:51 PM

I'm sure at 400+ pounds he really was terribly overheated. But really, if your place wasn't comfortable for him he should have moved to a hotel. On the other hand, you could have been a more gracious host.
The way you describe the friendship it sounds like you both dislike one another, so why was he visiting you, anyway?

77-78 does seem hot for the summer. If you're hosting guests, you should do what you can to make them comfortable. If you don't want to make them comfortable, then don't invite people over.

A pox on both of you. He is a pathetic whiner and should be more proactive about his smell and you should have put more thought into your guest. 77-78 is warm for many people. And I’d never take an obese person on a long walk in hot weather unless I already knew he was open to such things.

Dude, it's Houston and you keep it at 78? I'd die and I'm not fat. Also, too hot to stroll around the park unless it's late night with a breeze.

Next time suggest he stay in a hotel and take him to an all you can eat buffet instead. People have different priorities when traveling. I have friends visit and instead of wanting to world famous museums or popular tourist spots, they wanted to go to the outlets and shopping malls. Sounds like Jabba The Hutt.

Your guest doesn't sound like the best, but you're a shitty host. A summer air conditioning temperature of 77-78F is hot for a lot of people, not just your fat guest. And the fact that you felt the need to come here and shit on him for asking the bare minimum of you as a host, and make fun of his body, makes me very glad that I'm not your friend. Are Americans aware that perhaps billions of people around the world can sleep at night in household temperatures of 75-85? 85 is quite noticeable but 75 at night in Cairo, and across North African inner cities, is baseline. It gets cooler outside the city in the desert and in very early morning hours.
I mean if I lived in Texas I would keep it cool too but there are entire cultures that don't need to be 68F 24h 7.

R58 I get what you're saying, but in a high humidity state? A/C is supposed to relieve the awful humidity from the air. 78 degrees is "cooler" than the outside temp, sure, but when you can still feel that humidity in the air, it's stuffy and uncomfortable.

Your poor guest already has a pretty thick layer of insulation all around him called fat. Of course he’s going to be uncomfortable! You should’ve turned the air to whatever he wished. It’s only for two days. And also keep in mind he’s carrying around extra weight of another person at all times. It’s exhausting & really hard to walk with that kind of extra weight on your body. You really should be more empathetic and have asked him what can you do to make him feel more comfortable. That’s what a real friend & host does.

R127 Yes.
R124 Here's a dirt road in Chicago in the 1900s - Woodward Avenue - that was paved in 1909 because cars were replacing horse-drawn carriages.
"In 1909, a mile-long stretch of Woodward became the first mile of American road paved with concrete. By 1916, the road was paved for 27 miles, all the way to Pontiac, Michigan."
At least in the US there were still many unpaved roads in the early part of the century, and why are we just talking about urban areas? Most of the country was unpaved. Yes, there were some paved areas in the world but even those materials were as hot as blacktop, and cities were smaller. PLus as I saids there were no oil and gas burning vehicles adding to the heat of the cities.

Sharing accommodations / hosting / traveling together can really strain friendships.
Yes, an overweight person will feel hotter than an average-weight person. Walking in the park on a hot summer day was probably a no-cost activity, but it sounds miserable.
Wanting to eat at home for every meal, unless your friend really likes your cooking, sounds depressing. Friend probably wanted to go out so that he could get enough to eat. I'm not overweight, but I do have friends whose cooking leaves me wanting more, elsewhere.
That said, friend sounds kind of inflexible as well.

And people like R147 should stop thinking that only their little corner of America has subtropical climate. I live in South East Asia. How’s that for year-round subtropical climate? At night I never use the AC but use the fan setting instead. The temperature hits 27C (that’s 80F for you, as you probably don’t know how to convert), and is perfectly bearable. Many people I speak to, Western expats, do the same. Only Americans need arctic AC at night.

Yes, if it were necessary, Americans could sleep at that temperature. I grew up with parents who didn’t believe in spending money on air conditioning. I always found the summer heat intolerable and had difficulty in sleeping even though I knew nothing else. Nobody wants to travel to have that experience.
If the host has a moral objection to air conditioning he should make that clear before the guest arrives because most people don’t want to waste the time and money to travel to experience that discomfort.

R155, deserts get cold at night. Houston is not a desert. It is near the Gulf of Mexico and the humidity is oppressive. Nighttime temperatures typically don’t fall below 75 - 80 degrees during the summer and the humidity is unrelenting virtually year-round. The city would be uninhabitable without air conditioning.
