The Garin - De Minaur match was epic. An almighty crap for the last 3 sets.

So happy Cris pulled it off in the end. He's had a shit past year and really needed this confidence boost.

by Anonymousreply 7July 4, 2022 2:58 PM

Nakashima and Nick K going to a 5th set! let's go USA! it's the 4th of July!!

by Anonymousreply 8July 4, 2022 3:13 PM

Ugh, Nick is going to win this. Can't stand him.

Nice to see Daddy Fritz playing well. And Garin-of-the-Thighs won a big match earlier. Let's find a shirtless of him.

by Anonymousreply 9July 4, 2022 3:48 PM

Nasty Nick seems to have behaved himself today. Someone had a word with him?

Kyrgios advances.

by Anonymousreply 11July 4, 2022 3:55 PM

Daddy Fritz through.

by Anonymousreply 12July 4, 2022 3:56 PM

Nick with that ridiculous hat low on his head, acting all sullen, speaking in monotone. What a CUNT.

by Anonymousreply 13July 4, 2022 3:58 PM

Fritz has those sad, droopy, wrinkly eyes, it's very endearing in a way. He kind of looks like Emperor Palpatine from the nose up.

Nick could actually win this whole Slam, as disgusting as that would be. I could see him rattling Rafa and then Djoko to get them off their game. What a shitty Wimbledon this has turned out to be already! I agree with the decision to not allow Russian players. But honestly, I think Kyrios should have been suspended after his Tsitipas match yesterday. Kyrgios obviously fancies himself as a 'disrupter' in a sport that really doesn't need disrupting in the way he thinks it does. In the end he's just a straight up asshole that should be receiving much stiffer penalties than he has received.

Tomljanovic will probably lose to Rybakina, but it would be a real power move for her to make an unexpected run to the final after the Berrettini split and his unfortunate absence from the tournament this year.

by Anonymousreply 34July 4, 2022 5:56 PM

Wimbledon organisers and Britain's tennis authorities said on Monday they have appealed against fines handed to them by the WTA, for excluding Russian and Belarussian players from this year's grasscourt events.

As part of the penalties, the LTA was slapped with a fine of £620,000 (about $753,000) while the All England Club has been asked to pay £207,000 ($250,000)

It does sound like a great life, I'll be honest. But then what happens when his career ends? I hope they're investing most of the money he makes.

by Anonymousreply 39July 4, 2022 6:01 PM

I don't really see anything 'daddy' about Fritz except for the actual kid he had when he was like 18 (which gives me more white trash, rather than 'hot dad'). His sunken eyes, thin greasy hair, hunched posture, mouth breathing and sinewy figure... his servebot game is also enough to put anyone to sleep.

Jason Kubler is much hotter, gorgeous skin - but he was too tired coming from qualies to do anything (and doesn't really belong at this level anyway just yet). I loved the closeup of him getting a literal butt massage through his white shorts - delicious, the trainer was squeezing the cheek so hard. I thought it was sweet when they were waiting for Fritz before the coin toss and he was talking to Mo Layhani about how excited he was to be there and what a beautiful court it was, saying it was "unreal" and couldn't believe he was actually getting to play there, even asking Mo what it was like when he first got to umpire a big court like this. A really nice guy.

by Anonymousreply 40July 4, 2022 6:01 PM

Feli's commentating on the Rafa-Botic match on the BBC. His voice is giving me a boner.

I am unfamiliar with Zandschulp's sponsor on his shirt., never seen that symbol before...

by Anonymousreply 42July 4, 2022 6:17 PM

Tomljanovic is so random, she has the talent but not the heart to be a champion. Even in the interview she said she didn't think she could actually do it and broke into tears. Nice to see her emerging in her own right and no longer just a punchline for getting screwed over by Kyrgios and Matteo.

Garin really is gorgeous. Re the Alcaraz/Nakashima acne - I think doping controls and side effects prevent them from using medications like acutane.

by Anonymousreply 43July 4, 2022 6:22 PM

Nice to see Tomljanovic out from under the spell of Matteo's manmeat, tho.

People LOVE Kyrgios. He's an ass, but people love that. I don't care. He doesn't bother me, but I'm not usually rooting for him. I really don't see him as some sort of massive rebel.

by Anonymousreply 77July 5, 2022 3:43 AM

yeah, there is something definitely wrong with him, he was drinking at the bar until 4am, the night before his match with Nadal. He's also said that he will throw the match if his beloved Celtics lost a basketball game.

by Anonymousreply 78July 5, 2022 4:07 AM

lol of all the stuff Kyrgios does that is controversial, his rebelling against the most idiotic "all white clothes only" rule is 1 thing that he should be praised for

it really is the stupidest rule in all of tennis that Wimbledon requires all white. The courts never looked so good as at the year the Olympic event was held there and we saw players in all those beautiful colors

by Anonymousreply 81July 5, 2022 7:51 AM

really impressed that Halep destroyed Badosa so easily especially given that Badosa upset an in-form Kvitova in the previous round

the top half of the ladies' draw isn't bad at all. Rybakina is a very good player-big hitter and server which translates to grass. Anisimova is having her most consistent year including an improved serve and she always had the groundstrokes. The only one who shouldn't reach the final is Tomljanovic

by Anonymousreply 82July 5, 2022 8:56 AM

Agreed R42. Anisimova actually has a fantastic game. No real weaknesses. When she's on? She's fun to watch

She's had some tough Slam draws this year. I hope she can pull through.

by Anonymousreply 83July 5, 2022 9:22 AM

You guys make it hard for me, considering that historically my two faves on the ATP tour are Djokovic and Kyrgios and I'm not even making that up. But wait, no, it's not your fault: Djokovic and Kyrgios make it especially hard for anyone to root for them. Kyrgios' ego keeps growing and growing and he's turning into a bully so I just have to ignore him, and with Djokovic, the MO was to turn off the TV the minute he wins so that I didn't get exposed to the ludricous boobs out twirls. Then came COVID, Nole's hallucinating shenanigans and you cannot objectively keep rooting for him, so I have to force myself to root for the opponents but you know how it goes, as the match progresses, you lose your focus and Djokovic makes it a point to come out with an absolutely outrageous BH DTL and here I am, jumping out of my couch like a lunatic (Tom Cruise's fashion) and have to regroup: "no, what are you doing? You're supposed to hate the man, not to cheer on his tennis.

It's really hard, Datalounge. Go easy on me.

by Anonymousreply 84July 5, 2022 9:24 AM

I miss Federer. It was nice seeing him get trotted out during the silly parade of champions. He looked good. Hopefully he can come back. Even if he's not slam winning days anymore I'd like him to end his career on his terms and not because of injury

btw for the Thiem fans ( I am not one though I appreciate his talent) he has taken a WC into the Austrian clay challenger event this week and is playing #210 Filip Misolic today

by Anonymousreply 94July 5, 2022 12:09 PM

Eldergay flashback. I remembered a 1975 interview with BJK when she was a straight, married lady who demurred to her husband and didn't like women libbers.

-Her family—"straight out of Archie Bunker," according to Larry—was solid, traditional Protestant middle class, fired by hard work and a fear of God. Even now, her parents would like to see her abandon all this gallivanting around the world and settle down and have some kids. Growing up in Long Beach, Calif., Billie Jean deviated little from the values of her happy home. Her father, a fireman, was also a devoted sports fan, and so the daughter's participation in sports was not considered aberrant any more than her deep religious conviction. After all, going back at least as far as Jo March, little girls have been tolerated as tomboys.

It puts Wimbledon in a tricky position. He's actually being charged in court and there will be a trial, unlike Zverev etc. Is it reasonable to expect an audience to sit there politely applauding him during a match? Plenty of actors/sportsmen get puled off things just after being MeToed, but this is a lot more serious.

The altercation occurred after Passari accused Kyrgios of cheating in a post on Instagram, in which she shared a photo that appeared to show him in bed with a “naked girl.” Kyrgios reportedly denied the cheating claim at the time.

by Anonymousreply 138July 5, 2022 3:04 PM

Oh god, here we go, Novaxx is driving the bus now.

by Anonymousreply 139July 5, 2022 3:05 PM

If Maria wins the title, she'll be the oldest winner since 1914!

by Anonymousreply 145July 5, 2022 3:26 PM

Yeah I hate seeing the smarmy Djokovic win. If a 20 yr old cant do it maybe the kids that are 10 yrs old now will beat an almost 50 yr old Djokovic in the future. Theres always hope.

by Anonymousreply 153July 5, 2022 4:12 PM

Cant wait to miss the most predictable mens final ever.

by Anonymousreply 154July 5, 2022 4:13 PM

I really thought Sinner was going to win that. He dominated the first two sets, but after that he pretty much lifted his caftan and presented hole.

by Anonymousreply 155July 5, 2022 4:16 PM

I love Djokovic. He’s an amazing player and , I think, he’s good looking. I don’t get all the hate for him

by Anonymousreply 156July 5, 2022 4:18 PM

Seems like every single time I've signed on the last few days, it was primetime but not many posts. Anyway, really disappointed in Carlos Alcaraz. Two Slams in a row he's come out flat in an important match. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come. His arm was wrapped, though, so not sure if he was dealing with an injury.

Also, the continuing disappointment of these younger generations not being able to take down Nadal or Djokovic at the Slams is endlessly frustrating. Nadal embarrassed Ruud in the French final and got through several other matches that were winnable by his opponent. Same script in Melbourne. Now Sinner loses after being up two sets to none against Djokovic. Shades of Tsitsipas in the 2021 French final.

I'd be surprised if it isn't yet another Djokovic-Nadal final. Fritz has a shot against Nadal. If he gets ahead early, though, he can't let Nadal back in. But I suspect Nadal will find a way through.

by Anonymousreply 157July 5, 2022 4:19 PM

I think the only hope of someone else winning is Medvedev going beast mode at the US Open!

Had a nap. Woke up to Novaxx winning. Absolutely disgusting. I have a feeling he will win Wimbledon. He's playing way better than Nadal, which pains me to say. Nadal also has the worst draw and Novaxx gets a day more rest. Fuck this shit. I took a break from tennis for years. Nadal's recent victories brought me back, and not to mention Alcaraz, who has shown potential. Wondering if I should take another 5 year break from tennis. Hopefully by then the disgsgusting Novaxx is retired.

r156= Mrs. Djokovic.

I love me some boobs out but get real. I'm a fan but his anti-science stupidity robbed us of good tennis at a time when we all needed it.

I mean, The entire pro tennis world got vaccinated. We've all been vaccinated and a lot of us were not happy about it so STFU because you're not special. Did you see his player's box? by Anonymousreply 191July 5, 2022 6:26 PM

Perhaps Novaxx will contract Covid.

by Anonymousreply 192July 5, 2022 6:28 PM

No-one was expecting Murray last long, R189. It was just nice to see him again at Wimbledon.

by Anonymousreply 193July 5, 2022 6:28 PM

My favorite slam is definitely the US Open for the men cause statistically I think it's the worst for the big 3. They dont dominate it nearly as much as the other 3.

by Anonymousreply 194July 5, 2022 6:29 PM

Like Novaxx would admit it and drop out if he had COVID, R192!

by Anonymousreply 195July 5, 2022 6:29 PM

Ons keeps tugging on her crotch like Nadal.

by Anonymousreply 196July 5, 2022 6:30 PM

Raducanu is early in her career. Despite her USO breakthrough, it’s unrealistic to expect too much from her for another year or two.

As for Murray, he’s clearly fighting retirement. Not realistic to expect him to contend on a major at the age after his hip surgery.

by Anonymousreply 197July 5, 2022 6:33 PM

Evert had to correct Patrick McEnroe on air about he pronunciation of Ons’ last name… yet he continued to mispronounce it.

Is it me or does he often come across like a dolt?

by Anonymousreply 198July 5, 2022 6:35 PM

Ons is fun to watch because she's not a baseliner.

by Anonymousreply 199July 5, 2022 6:47 PM

Ons showed beautiful variety and tired Bouzkova out with the dropshots and sharp angles. Huge serving, strong defence, and a charming interview to boot. I hope she wins the title. It seems a lot in the tennis community (and even that one poster in this thread) want the skinny / conventionally attractive / 'glamorous' types to win slams (a la Raducanuu and Sharapova and Anisimova), but at least this girl has some personality and a spectacular game.

Speaking of Hingis, she and Clijsters had a 6-0 6-3 win over Schett and Dechy. They will probably win the legends title. It was also fun to see big hitting Ivanisevic and Pierce team up for the mixed legends, especially since no players on the current tour have any real star quality. Is this the first slam to have a mixed legends event?

by Anonymousreply 200July 5, 2022 7:16 PM

men's tennis is just SO COMPELLING!

INCREDIBLE how middle aged chronically injured Nadal and antivaxxer Djokovic keep outlasting guys 10-15 years their junior in marathon slam matches!

From the 2021 RG final to the 2022 AO and now today's Wimbledon QF

those young guys are SO impressive! They sometimes can win a set or 2! wowzers!

I look forward to another 10 years domination when Djokovic will have gone all gray and Nadal will be totally bald!

let's praise the young guys for having the COURAGE to step on court with them!

by Anonymousreply 204July 5, 2022 7:32 PM

Norrie doesn't get enough on his shots to really bother Djokovic though he's improved his serve somewhat. Sometimes his groundstokes are too "spinny" which is going to hurt him against the best of the best.

I think if Fritz can shorten points he'll have a shot against Nadal but obviously the match is going to be a big test of his consistency and stamina. He has the same build as Sinner, long and lanky

by Anonymousreply 211July 5, 2022 8:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 212July 5, 2022 8:49 PM

None of you are talking about how subdued Novak was, though.

I was wondering if he's ill with corona.

Not much roaring and even when he rose up out the crypt in the third set, it was a marginal improvement in his demeanour.

Well, I didn't see the entire fifth because of the channel swap...

I really hoped that big cheer Jannik received at the start of the fifth would inspire him.

But anyway, point is Novak didn't seem himself, and although he can do without crowd support, the Brits were utterly electric for Norrie today and will be absolutely enflamed for the semi-final... Novak will get crumbs from them, if he's lucky. They certainly won't tolerate any antics. Don't count out the upset just yet.

by Anonymousreply 224July 5, 2022 9:39 PM

in my wild tennis fantasy I'd love for Garin to win the title but he'll be lucky not to get embarrassed tomorrow.

the domestic violence charge against Kyrgios is too much. Cleary there's evidence or they wouldn't be going to court. This is now THREE active ATP guys. The sport needs to take a stance

by Anonymousreply 225July 5, 2022 10:38 PM

Really hard to pick where this is going... I think Nole gets to the final, Norrie should be no problem, but I really could see Rafa lose to Kyrgios.

A Kyrgios-Djokovic final would be something, wouldn't it? Nick hates Novak, yet defended him during the affair in Australia, which Novak recently credited him with, once again. Maybe it's Nick's destiny to win one Slam and then be done with the whole thing. He did say the other day that he told friends he was motivated to go to Wimbledon this year and win the whole thing just to shut everyone up. He's so talented--when he puts his mind to it, he can win!

That said, Garin is an Iron Man. Won't be that shocked if he grinds Rafa down. Daddy Fritz has no chance, I fear. (Though he won Eastbourne!)

by Anonymousreply 226July 5, 2022 10:46 PM

From Wikipedia:
[The porcine] Raonic struggled with calf and right leg injuries for most of the year. After losing in the fourth round at the 2021 Miami Masters to eventual champion Hubert Hurkacz in three sets, he took a hiatus that lasted for three months when he returned at the 2021 Atlanta Open in July. As the top seed, he lost in his opening match against eventual finalist Brandon Nakashima in three sets. After the loss, he once again took another hiatus due to his injuries.

by Anonymousreply 251July 6, 2022 2:16 PM

The Wimbledon interviewer *repeatedly* asking her about what a big day it was for Khazakhstan and Rybakina completely ignoring her every time... lol. Also the excessive closeups of one person in the crowd with a Kazakh flag. She was born in Moscow, lives in Moscow, trains in Moscow, pays taxes in Russia (literally funding the war), and played for Russia until 2018. As much as Wimbledon and the BBC try and cover up the awkward truth that a Russian player has a strong chance of winning this title, they can't avoid it.

In an interview from earlier in the week when asked about the ban, she said (quote) "I hope everyone will forget about the whole thing next year." It could get very awkward for Kate Middleton potentially handing the Venus Rosewater Dish to her. And I think she has a chance, she hit 15 aces today.

by Anonymousreply 252July 6, 2022 2:29 PM

I definitely don't like Rybakina for that. Kazakhstan have clearly helped her financially and with coaching support (the captain of the national team, Yaroslava Shvedova, has been in her box throughout Wimbledon). Too bad people are going to wank furiously over it if she wins and she isn't helping matters. There are a number of players who moved nationalities for money but the country expects to get national pride from it.

by Anonymousreply 253July 6, 2022 2:37 PM

Tomljanovic, who was playing Rybakina is another example - Croatian originally, has lived in the U.S. for years and has an American accent, but plays for Australia.

by Anonymousreply 258July 6, 2022 2:45 PM

Can anyone hear what Kyrgios keeps bitching about? He’s bitching and kvetching nonstop today, at his box, the chair umpire, anyone within earshot.

by Anonymousreply 259July 6, 2022 2:51 PM

R254 Speaking as an Aussie - Tomljanovic is about as Australian as Zhang Shuai. And it's always a bit of an elephant in the room when at the AO or Fed Cup they try and promote her as one of our Aussie girls (even on the news this week) and then the crowd watch her and hear her American accent and Croatian coaching. But it's not the same issue because Croatians are not banned from Wimbledon. If Rybakina wins, a lot of her prize money from this week (incl. sponsors) will go directly into Putin's pocket, through her taxes. Samsonova on the other hand was banned for having the Russian flag, but lives and grew up in Italy, speaks Italian as a first language, etc. It's just a bit awkward.

Nick's loud talking when Garin is about to serve is shameless gamesmanship. I hate that sexy thighs is already choking.

by Anonymousreply 260July 6, 2022 2:51 PM

Fritz let Nadal back into this match. He should have concentrated on making sure he held serve. Instead he plays an error-strewn game to hand Nadal a break. I'd be surprised if Nadal loses this set.

by Anonymousreply 264July 6, 2022 3:07 PM

R253 Rybakina didn't even go to a tennis school. She went to a regular high school and was training on her own at the Spartak Club at afternoon between homework and without a personal coach, all this when she was already 18. Then Kazakhstan stepped in and helped her. It's thanks to Kazakhstan if she has a career at all. Ungrateful.

R260 How did Tomljanovic get the citizenship if she wasn't even living there to begin with? I'm not familiar with Australian citizenship.

The absolute WORST in terms of nationality is Osaka anyway.

by Anonymousreply 265July 6, 2022 3:07 PM

R265, Before 2014, Tomljanović played for her country of birth, Croatia. She began competing for Australia at the 2014 US Open after obtaining permanent residency in Australia. For the next four years she was required to represent Croatia at all non-Grand Slam events,[4] until she was granted Australian citizenship in January 2018, allowing her to represent the country at all events on the WTA Tour.[5]

Tomljanović was born in Zagreb to Croatian father Ratko Tomljanović who played handball professionally (winner of the 1992 and 1993 handball European Cup) and Bosnian mother Emina.[6] Her elder sister Hana played tennis for University of Virginia.[6]

She began playing tennis at the age of six and moved to Florida for training when she was 13.[7] She is coached by Fernando Martínez and Rene Gomez.[6] She is also a fan of basketball.[6][8]

by Anonymousreply 266July 6, 2022 3:10 PM

R265 Tomljanovic I think had an Australian coach at the time and he arranged it.

Osaka at least was born in Japan and is half-Japanese. She didn't get support from the U.S. either which is why she moved but at least she's somewhat patriotic about being Japanese and makes an effort.

by Anonymousreply 286July 6, 2022 3:27 PM

What's wrong with Nadal? his foot bothering him?

by Anonymousreply 287July 6, 2022 3:34 PM

Nadal with an injury, but Fritz can't break him. Nadal did fire off a string of winners in his last service game, though.

by Anonymousreply 288July 6, 2022 3:34 PM

Kyrgios has the oddest body. Zero muscle tone and a slight hunch back.

by Anonymousreply 289July 6, 2022 3:40 PM

Kyrgios has the uglies tat. just black patches, can't even see what the fuck it is.

by Anonymousreply 290July 6, 2022 3:42 PM

Quite a big hunchback for a young man I'd say. That's gonna get worse.

by Anonymousreply 291July 6, 2022 3:44 PM

R288, or “injury.” This could be the second time he’s tried to break an opponent’s momentum. (The first was that weird pause to lecture Sonego).

by Anonymousreply 292July 6, 2022 3:45 PM

Apparently Nadal plays better with an abdominal injury.

by Anonymousreply 293July 6, 2022 3:46 PM

Fritz handed Nadal that set. Pathetic.

by Anonymousreply 301July 6, 2022 4:04 PM

Yeah, sure injury. It was just a ready made excuse in case he got rolled. He looks fine now.

by Anonymousreply 311July 6, 2022 4:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 312July 6, 2022 4:29 PM
Kyrgios or Fritz have better chances.

Ha, Sure Jan. Those two will fold. Another dull final.

by Anonymousreply 313July 6, 2022 4:30 PM

Kyrgios's antics are tiresome. He acts like he's some tennis rockstar but he just comes across as bratty, annoying and a total asswipe.

by Anonymousreply 314July 6, 2022 4:38 PM

Ugh. If Kyrgios makes it to the final then at least Novak will hopefully kick his ass. The tantrums could be entertaining. But he’s ugly inside and out.

by Anonymousreply 315July 6, 2022 4:45 PM

Kyrgios acts like he’s won 30 Slams and everyone should n bow to his whims.

by Anonymousreply 316July 6, 2022 4:52 PM

So bummed Kyrgios won that match. Garin is HAWT. But a great result for him.

Now rooting for Fritz! If Nadal wins but is injured, that means Kyrgios goes to the Final with ease, which would suck.

Nadal won't be winning anything today.

by Anonymousreply 318July 6, 2022 5:06 PM

by Anonymousreply 322July 6, 2022 5:21 PM

Team Nick, and he will fuck with that Spanish faker prick. Nick will mess with Rafa's towels, and the minute that Rafa pulls his bogus foot/abdomen/inner ear ailments, he'll call him on it. Nick is not wimpy Taylor, he won't crack.

by Anonymousreply 344July 6, 2022 8:30 PM

Taylor fucked it up himself in the 4th set.

Nadal doesn't seem to be playing high quality tennis which I've come to expect from him...maybe he's not 100% who knows

Nick is not 100% either.

However, I hope Nick will be OK with his legal case in AU. I hope it's not serious. I want to hear the details. I remember she mentioned that she had to quit her job or something to follow him on tour and he called her a bum...she complained that he's stingy, few gifts etc. So maybe she's trying to get some $$ from him, after putting up with his shit for 2 years. He moved on so fast with this new gf and even bought an apt together and says he wants babies with her etc. The ex must be seething with jealousy.

by Anonymousreply 345July 6, 2022 8:45 PM

R345, it’s not a lawsuit for money, it’s a criminal assault charge. In theory, he could face two years in prison. He’s certainly not the last guy on the tour you’d think was capable of behaving violently.

by Anonymousreply 346July 6, 2022 8:55 PM

Rafa is playing so bad. It's just his utter refusal to quit that's keeping him in matches. He's SO epic. Even when he's not playing epically.

Still, if Nick plays his A game? Rafa doesn't stand a chance right now.

With that in mind, I shall be praying to the tennis gods for the next two days so that my dear Rafa can up his level. Just two more matches. Please!

by Anonymousreply 347July 6, 2022 9:04 PM

I'm rooting for Norrie

by Anonymousreply 348July 6, 2022 9:05 PM

Tuning in late her. The reason Rafa won was because of his will. He hates losing. Novak is the same. The will to win of these two is something you can't teach.

Help is playing excellent, clean tennis.

by Anonymousreply 349July 6, 2022 9:28 PM

erm, late HERE

by Anonymousreply 350July 6, 2022 9:28 PM

Someone upthread said he may take a break from following the game. If it's another Nadal-Djokovic final, I may do just that and only follow online until someone other than those two win all the Slams. The inability of the young guns to take down even a hobbled Nadal or an out-of-form Djokovic is just embarrassing for tennis.

The will of the Big 3, especially Nadal, is amazing. However, the lack of it from the younger generations is hurting tennis. That's why there was so much excitement around Alcaraz this spring, but he's so far turned out to be another dud in the Slams.

by Anonymousreply 351July 6, 2022 9:30 PM

Fritz's girl is a proper old-fashioned WAG.

by Anonymousreply 352July 6, 2022 9:34 PM

Norrie team.

I’m not a Nadal fan, but I much prefer him to Kyrgios.

by Anonymousreply 353July 6, 2022 9:43 PM

More than the all-important champion's mindset, the younger players don't even really have a MAN's mindset.

Watching the semi-finals in Paris, it was painfully clear that Ruud/Rune were boys, and Nadal/Djokovic were men.

It was in everything - the play, the presence.

It's not just about age, because Nadal, Djok and Fed didn't seem so boyish even in their early twenties, neither did their contemporaries - there's just a lot of infantilism across the board for young men these days that shows up on court ... anyway I don't know whether you'd all agree with that or whether I should articulate further or is this controversial...

by Anonymousreply 354July 6, 2022 9:46 PM

I'm actually starting to believe Nadal could get a calendar year slam.

by Anonymousreply 355July 6, 2022 9:47 PM

grand slam, that is

by Anonymousreply 356July 6, 2022 9:48 PM

At the very least, they need to STOP announcing that they had Nadal posters in their bedrooms as children.

by Anonymousreply 357July 6, 2022 9:48 PM

Best of 5 is such a great format for Rafa and Nole since the rest of the year all the matches are best of 3. There's a bit of a psychological let down when a younger player, having won two sets realizes that they still have to win one more. Add to that, their awareness of all the times Rafa and Nole have come back. It's very intimidating, especially since both those guys grind and will not give any points away. Rafa and Nole know this and its a huge psychological obstacle for younger guys.

I'm still predicting a Novaxx/Kyrgios final, even though I'm a huge Nadal fan.

by Anonymousreply 363July 6, 2022 10:58 PM

Watching the match now.

Incredible that Rafa won. 😳

He’s amazing.

by Anonymousreply 364July 6, 2022 11:01 PM

As I noted above, I’m not a Rafa fan on court, although he seems like a decent, likable guy off court. However, I wouldn’t mind him winning Wimbledon this year because:

1. I’d rather have anyone win other than Djokovic and Kyrgios

2. I’d like to see someone, whether Rafa or Serena, get closest to reaching or exceeding Margaret Court’s total majors record.

3. I’d like to see a men’s grand slam in my life time rather than just the same man holding the four major titles at once (non-calendar year). I remember Steffi getting hers, and it was anti-climactic because it was so expected and she had no serious rivals at the majors that year.

by Anonymousreply 365July 6, 2022 11:18 PM

I adore Rafa.

by Anonymousreply 366July 6, 2022 11:25 PM

Yes, hun. But it's ok.

by Anonymousreply 367July 6, 2022 11:28 PM

Something I've been thinking the last while is - another way for Nadal and Federer to protect their records from Djokovic would be to coach younger players to defeat him.

Well, they probably don't have any faith in the younger players to get the job done...

But still, Rafael [italic]will[/italic] retire before Novak, you could imagine him coaching Alcaraz ... if Alcaraz is willing to kick his beloved Juan Carlos out of bed.

Roger taking on a grass protégé would certainly have been a better use of his time than gathering dust the past two years.

Normally you'd say they're so rich and accomplished, they'd have no desire to coach, and that their fees would be so much higher than other retired players, but as long as Novak's out there, they'd have a personal investment.

by Anonymousreply 368July 6, 2022 11:28 PM
another way for Nadal and Federer to protect their records from Djokovic would be to coach younger players to defeat him.

Rafa has a tennis academy in Mallorca. Some of the younger tour players are training there now.

by Anonymousreply 369July 6, 2022 11:35 PM

I don't mind the prospect of Rafael winning Wimbledon so much because I associate him with disappointing failures there over the years.

I'd watched Wimbledon before 2008, but somehow that final is my first memory of watching a match.

Well, enough has been said about how beautiful that was.

Had to wait a whole year to see him again, we didn't have channels showing any other tournaments, but of course he was a no-show in 2009.

In 2010, I was away on holiday, so because I didn't witness it, that second victory just didn't happen as far as I was concerned - for years afterward if you'd asked me, I'd have sworn he only won once.

Then of course came years of crashing out in early rounds, and even though he made semi-finals in '18 and '19 - I still always think of him as a disappointment on grass. Been expecting him to crash out at any moment in this tournament.

I still had an interest in watching Rafa until the last year or so, finally have become fatigued like most. It'd be a shame if he won now and I couldn't muster up the enjoyment I would've had watching him win another Wimbledon all those years ago, so I'll try to gear myself up to get in the spirit for that ... and already I have to admit, when faced with the prospect that he'd lose today, my stomach did sink...

by Anonymousreply 370July 6, 2022 11:49 PM

men's tennis continues to be pathetic and embarrassing but commentators will just orgasm about Nadal and Djokovic

as many critics have said, there's nothing wrong with those 2 still being strong contenders for slams. What looks HORRIBLE for the tour is that both are closer to 40 than 30 yet are still the 2 overwhelming favorites for every fucking slam. Then you see these old men physically outlast guys 10-15 years their junior in a best of 5 time and time again. Then you see opponents choke form winning positions. There's no excuse why the guys from age 23-29 can't dominate the tour but they're just damn mentally weak. Fritz should be ashamed of himself today

I won't be surprised if Kyrgios has a shoulder or leg injury in the next match retiring against Nadal then Nadal gets a walkover in the final after Novaxx Djokocovid tests positive for covid. That's how lame the men's tour has been

by Anonymousreply 371July 7, 2022 3:05 AM

I absolutely hate Novaxx and Kyrgios, but I'd rather see Kyrgios win the tournament over Novaxx.

by Anonymousreply 372July 7, 2022 3:30 AM

R368 lol, an excellent player =/a good coach, just because you are a talented player, it doesn't mean you can transfer your talents to others by coaching them. On the contrary, the successful and accomplished tennis coaches are generally not very good players themselves, most came from a background of lower ranked Top 100 level, rarely a good coach was ever ranked in top 30, they might not be the top ranked players themselves but they do know how to coach others to become better, far better than themselves.

by Anonymousreply 380July 7, 2022 4:56 AM

yeah, I knew he wasn't well...he played terrible against Taylor....and Taylor still fucking blew it. so disappointing.

by Anonymousreply 381July 7, 2022 5:09 AM

Rafa is tender to the touch!

I have no doubt that Rafa is ailing, but his camp does tend to present worst case scenarios so that if he has to default or does play but doesn't play well, it doesn't look as bad since they planted those seeds of disappointment.

by Anonymousreply 382July 7, 2022 5:11 AM

they said that Nadal's dad was gesturing from his box to tell him to stop playing in the 2nd set.

He might not play which is a shame because that mean Nick will go to the final.

I already hate the winner of this slam

by Anonymousreply 383July 7, 2022 6:17 AM

I don’t follow tennis anymore besides glancing now and then at the posts here but Rafa should buzz his hair or something.

by Anonymousreply 384July 7, 2022 6:34 AM

So happy Nadal won. I think it was pure adrenaline and will power that got him through the match. He was clearly injured. He might not even be 100 % fit for the Kyrgios match. It's funny that his haters are saying he faked it. Dude, his own dad fucking signaled him to stop playing!!! I doubt he would have done that if he was faking it.

by Anonymousreply 385July 7, 2022 7:44 AM

I still think Djokovic will win Wimbledon. Nadal is injured and even before he got injured he didn't look that impressive tbh, and this is coming from a Rafa fan. And then you have the fact that he might not even make it to the final. Kyrgios is a horrible match up for him. He always struggles against the big servers. And Kyrgios plays dirty tricks. I don't trust him. He is a bully. Hopefully Nadal and humanity wins, but I fear Kyrgios might just pull it off.

by Anonymousreply 386July 7, 2022 7:47 AM

A comment from the Daily Mail article:
Interesting to hear big mouth Djokavic say post match that the toilet break allowed him to also get a pep talk. How unsportsmanlike is an act like that. Nothing is ever said about his history of taking toilet breaks when he's losing I wonder why?

One more reason I can't stand Djokovic.

by Anonymousreply 387July 7, 2022 7:53 AM

the men's tour is sad enough these days that even an old, injured Nadal could still win.

by Anonymousreply 388July 7, 2022 8:57 AM

Nadal and Humanity??????? LOL what a loon. Gamesmanship is Nadal's strength. He will play that semi. His body is falling apart, he doesn't have much time. Now he's going to be a father. Who donated that sperm? Can Xtina can maternity time off from the bank?

by Anonymousreply 389July 7, 2022 9:31 AM

I think people get too harsh on Alcaraz. The truth is he had a better result at Wimbledon than Nole, Rafa or even Roger at the same age. He only played two GS being a top player.

In juniors there are two americans in quarterfinals, one macedonian, one croat, one player from hong kong, one swiss and two spaniards (one of them is the youngest in the competition and he won 14 consecutive matches on grass)

by Anonymousreply 390July 7, 2022 10:03 AM

The people who say Nadal is faking his injury are so dumb.

The guy could barely serve. He let a lot of balls go, instead of chasing them like he normally does. He made so many errors, missing shots he'd normally make.

What exactly does he gain from playing at 50% while "faking" an injury? An Oscar?

by Anonymousreply 391July 7, 2022 10:19 AM

oh absolutely it's absurd to bash Alcaraz at this stage. He's already achieved so much this year and will be a contender for the USO

btw I have a friend who sat directly behind Tsitsipas' father in the Kyrgios match. He said it was impossible not to see how often Stefanos was looking at his father and getting coaching from him. The ATP tour either needs to allow coaching or get stricter on enforcing it being illegal

[italic]Fabio Fognini appears to question whether Rafael Nadal was injured in his Wimbledon quarter-final win over Taylor Fritz. The Italian posted an article on his Instagram Story showing Nadal's perseverance through injury during his dramatic four hour and 20 minute triumph. Fognini appeared to take exception to the headline and posted: "For sure. Guys stop believe in what you read. Please."[/italic]

R393 I guess he must be blind. He was clearly injured. As for how he got through it, like I said; adrenaline and will power. He never stopped fighting.

by Anonymousreply 394July 7, 2022 10:46 AM

Did Fabio said a thing when Djokovic did the same thing (since round three) in Australian Open 2020?

by Anonymousreply 395July 7, 2022 10:55 AM

It's hilarious ... or sad ... that Cameron hasn't even been mentioned in the above posts of rage and despair.

He'll be in the best position at least psychologically to take on Novak. He'll have been inundated with support from other British athletes, celebrities, the public, the press, William and Kate probably spoke to him in person.

Court No. 1 for his quarter-final seemed to have more energy than any court I've seen at Wimbledon in [italic]years[/italic].

Centre Court will be an absolute ZOO on Friday... Novak is an iron fortress but the Brits will be raining down cannonballs.

I don't know what Cameron's like as a player, if the game isn't there it isn't there, but if anyone in this tournament has a shot against Novak, it's him.

by Anonymousreply 396July 7, 2022 11:06 AM

That bitch BEST be in shape to take down Krazy K or I'll be chasing her down and beat her with an over-grip!

by Anonymousreply 397July 7, 2022 11:10 AM

Martin Landaluce is the first semifinalist on the junior tournament. He is very tall for his age (he is 16 the youngest of all players in quarterfinals), has a very good backhand and is very calm on court (nothing like throwing raquets or screaming). This is his 15th consecutive win on grass

by Anonymousreply 398July 7, 2022 11:24 AM

Is M. Landaluce another blond Spaniard like Fokina?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 399July 7, 2022 11:35 AM

Fokina is actually Swedish Russian though.

by Anonymousreply 400July 7, 2022 11:40 AM

There are some 'natural blonds' in the north of Spain -- Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and Catalonia. Don't remember seeing any in the Basque Country, but maybe there, too.

by Anonymousreply 401July 7, 2022 11:44 AM

There are not many blonds in Spain but there's not that unusual.

I'm from Galicia and our ancestors are celts.

Unlike Alejandro, Martín has spanish parents.

Spain has pretty good players born in 2006, apart of Landaluce there's Roger Pascual and Rafael Segado (Segado seems destined to be a very handsome man)

by Anonymousreply 402July 7, 2022 11:50 AM

To paraphrase Martha Sharapova, "Isn't he back in Italy already???"

I love Fabio's game but he also has a history of drama on the court, overacting when he's hurt (he's basically the male Alize Cornet). And he's also played doubles a lot with Djokovic, so it's no secret where his allegiances lie.

I'm not a Rafa fan and I wish the big 3 would all retire tomorrow (who cares about Margaret Court's fake record? She won those slams against the local librarians). But it was pretty clear he was hampered last night. The serve motion looked very weird and you could tell he didn't trust his feet as much.

by Anonymousreply 403July 7, 2022 12:09 PM

Mili Poljicak and Pedro Ródenas are the other semifinalists in the junior competition. Spain is doing way better on Wimbledon junior than in RG (where Daniel Mérida was the only one who reached the quarterfinals)

by Anonymousreply 404July 7, 2022 12:13 PM

Rafael Nadal misses scheduled practice at Wimbledon amid fears he may be forced to miss crunch semi-final clash with Nick Kyrgios through injury he suffered in quarter-final comeback win

by Anonymousreply 405July 7, 2022 12:47 PM

Watching Jabba and Maria in their semifinal and I'm like, is this in slow motion? My grandma can hit the ball harder than that. Zzzzz....

by Anonymousreply 406July 7, 2022 12:51 PM

R406 it's not always about how hard you hit it. I guess you want Rybakina to win since she definitely hits it the hardest out of these final 4?

by Anonymousreply 407July 7, 2022 12:59 PM

More reports from my old uneducated bumpkin Dad: “bit of strange set-up, ain’t it, Labeur babysitting for Maria...”

Yeah Da, well weird that...👭

by Anonymousreply 408July 7, 2022 1:19 PM

Rafa is practicing this morning, hitting serves very cautiously. He was said to be grimacing from the pain in both his foot and his stomach muscle. He stopped the practice to ask for privacy, and it was granted. Someone from the press did snap some photos and there is great worry among those who saw it, that there is no way he can stretch and run if Nick is going to serve bombs at him. He is such a fighter, he has gotta try.

by Anonymousreply 409July 7, 2022 1:29 PM

I was just thinking, r406, how refreshing it is to see slicing, dicing, short angles, court craft and tactics being used instead of the boring, mindless ball-slugging that’s been the norm in women’s tennis for over 20 years. Rybakina, e.g., is completely unwatchable compared to these two.

by Anonymousreply 410July 7, 2022 1:33 PM

Ia R410! This is classic and sportsmanlike matchplay, not just grunting and smacking projectiles. There’s mentality here, and creativity, and an unpredictable element. In gripped, where normally idgaf about Womble-don.

by Anonymousreply 411July 7, 2022 1:41 PM

lots of people bought tickets, he doesn't want to disappoint them and the organizers.

by Anonymousreply 412July 7, 2022 1:42 PM

Honestly, I really don't give a fuck who wins as long as I get my Deliciano commentary.

by Anonymousreply 413July 7, 2022 1:46 PM

In five more minutes...

I want play berry much but my doctor tell me no.

by Anonymousreply 414July 7, 2022 1:46 PM

Awww Ons pulling Tati on court for her ovation💗

by Anonymousreply 415July 7, 2022 2:21 PM

Ons team.

by Anonymousreply 416July 7, 2022 2:28 PM

R387, in all fairness, Djokovic said he got a pep talk from the mirror, not a coach…

by Anonymousreply 417July 7, 2022 2:45 PM

I can't stand Nadal and never could, but I agree there was no way he was faking his injury yesterday. The real complaint should be that 24-year-old Taylor Fritz, 12 years Nadal's junior, couldn't take down a hobbled Nadal.

With the physicality in which Nadal plays the game, we've all been waiting for him to succumb permanently to injuries. I think he's just about there with the foot, knee, and now abdominal strain. If he keeps playing, he'll probably be permanently disabled in some way. Yet he'll still probably win five more French Opens.

by Anonymousreply 418July 7, 2022 2:46 PM

R418 Nadal would play with a broken leg. Dude is gonna or already has fucked up his body for the rest of his life.

by Anonymousreply 419July 7, 2022 2:50 PM

Why is Patrick Mouratoglou so unpopular?

by Anonymousreply 420July 7, 2022 2:51 PM

R420 coz he's a fame whore.

by Anonymousreply 421July 7, 2022 2:58 PM

Good start for Rybakina. Her serve is the bomb.. if she keeps serving like that, I don't see how Halep can win.

by Anonymousreply 422July 7, 2022 2:58 PM

R422 if Rybakina doesnt fall apart with giving more errors I bet Halep starts to read the serve better.

by Anonymousreply 423July 7, 2022 3:02 PM

Djokovic's mirror pep talk...

by Anonymousreply 424July 7, 2022 3:12 PM

by Anonymousreply 425July 7, 2022 3:14 PM

Djokovic probably told himself that he's the most loved player ever and that everyone is cheering for him.

by Anonymousreply 426July 7, 2022 3:15 PM

the russian has a very high forehead, it's hidden by her visor but half her face is that forehead...

by Anonymousreply 427July 7, 2022 3:16 PM

anyone drug test the russian? never trust these cunts

by Anonymousreply 428July 7, 2022 3:17 PM

I don't think drugs will help you hit the ball like that. You either can hit like that or not.

by Anonymousreply 429July 7, 2022 3:22 PM

You need good genes for sure but drugs definitely can help too - with strength, endurance and even reflexes.

by Anonymousreply 430July 7, 2022 3:23 PM

who knows? maybe she has heart problems like maria sharapova

by Anonymousreply 431July 7, 2022 3:25 PM

Do you remember someone released all the meds the players were on? It was a hack. Serena was on something too. I don't think Nadal was on that list. I can't remember.

by Anonymousreply 432July 7, 2022 3:33 PM

R432 Nadal was part of that hack.. they are all doing it really.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 433July 7, 2022 3:38 PM

The absolute best thing about Rybakina is that she doesn't make a sound when hitting the ball. It is so refreshing not to have incessant grunting and screaming.

by Anonymousreply 434July 7, 2022 3:42 PM

R434 she is also an example of not needing to grunt to hit the ball hard. Rybakina is pummeling the ball and Halep is shrieking with shots that look like they have a lot less sting on them.

by Anonymousreply 435July 7, 2022 3:48 PM

Grunting is a tactic to put off other players, it's bullshit and bad for tennis's popularity too, they should enforce the rules more (yes, there's actually a rule against it..)

by Anonymousreply 436July 7, 2022 3:50 PM

I've only just learnt that Rybakina essentially means 'fisherwoman' in Russian - so that's where her 'Fish Queen' nickname comes from!

by Anonymousreply 437July 7, 2022 3:52 PM

Rybakina's backhand technique is nearly perfect, also her down the line backhand slice is marvellous. Very clean shots, typical Russian school. Halep was an absolute emotional mess.

by Anonymousreply 438July 7, 2022 4:08 PM

After seeing that I'd fancy Fish Queen to win the final... that was a demolition against one of the best returners on tour.

by Anonymousreply 439July 7, 2022 4:13 PM

I am rooting for the other one, the one from Africa.

by Anonymousreply 440July 7, 2022 4:26 PM
Nadal and Humanity??????? LOL what a loon. Gamesmanship is Nadal's strength. He will play that semi. His body is falling apart, he doesn't have much time. Now he's going to be a father. Who donated that sperm? Can Xtina can maternity time off from the bank?

r389. seriously, get help, you're mentally disturbed. And they talk about Rafa having OCD; r389, hon, you're the poster-child!

by Anonymousreply 441July 7, 2022 4:27 PM

I don't think Xtina works at the bank. I think she now works at his foundation.

by Anonymousreply 442July 7, 2022 4:33 PM

Rafa's giving a press conference in 10 minutes (19:20 GMT) - guess that means he's pulling out.

Fucking Kuntios getting a walkover to the Final.

Kind of mad at Nadal for carrying on against Daddy. I know that he might have believed there was a possibility he'd be fit enough, but it really fucks up the tournament in these late rounds.

by Anonymousreply 443July 7, 2022 6:11 PM

Rafael Nadal withdraws from Wimbledon with injury

There will be no Grand Slam for Rafael Nadal in 2022.

by Anonymousreply 444July 7, 2022 6:24 PM

Nick Kyrgios, Grand Slam Finalist. A stain on the world that can never be cleansed!

by Anonymousreply 445July 7, 2022 6:27 PM

I hate to say it but I'd rather Kyrgios than Djokovic - is there any chance?

by Anonymousreply 446July 7, 2022 6:29 PM

Can't wait to hear posters claiming that Rafa is STILL faking his injury and this is his master plan to win Wimby 2023. Or something equally moronic.

by Anonymousreply 447July 7, 2022 6:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 449July 7, 2022 6:44 PM

Fuck me. 😩😩😭

He’s not getting this chance again.

TWO victories. 😫

by Anonymousreply 450July 7, 2022 7:06 PM

gee, i'm torn.

I like Cam but don't think he has a chance. unless Novaxx slips and hurt himself...I don't see him winning.

by Anonymousreply 451July 7, 2022 7:25 PM

If Kyrgios meets Djokovic in the Wimby finals, that'll be the most obnoxious match at AELTC since Connors met Nastase in the '72 quarters.

I didn't realize that Kyrgios is 2-0 in his H2H with Novaxx.

by Anonymousreply 452July 7, 2022 7:26 PM

Yes, but that was when Djokovic was in very bad form.

I think Kyrgios will underperform big time in the final

by Anonymousreply 453July 7, 2022 7:37 PM

Devastated for Rafa. I've been a fan for 15 years. I don't understand why he couldn't just fight through it? Take painkillers ffs! He was 2 wins away from another slam and then missing just USO for the CYGS. This was his last shot at a CYGS. He should have just pushed through, won Wimby, taken a few weeks off, then USO. Then he could retire. He will never get this opportunity again. Fuck this. I'm sad and pissed. And those who said Rafa was faking an injury: kindly fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 454July 7, 2022 7:43 PM

R454, he can’t push past something that might cause permanent injury. Athletes are always very guarded as to what they reveal about their physical condition, so we may not know the real nature of the problem.

by Anonymousreply 455July 7, 2022 7:51 PM

I think it proves how authentic Rafa is, in that he has been saying that the number of Slams he wins is not a big issue with him, he plays for his own passion for the game.

by Anonymousreply 456July 7, 2022 7:59 PM

Desirae Krawczyk and Neal Skupski won again the Mixed title

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 457July 7, 2022 8:00 PM

I like Neal and Desiare as a pairing. She's got a whole 'good time gal' vibe going on. They're fun to watch.

by Anonymousreply 458July 7, 2022 8:02 PM

By the way, Ivanosvsky, the junior who did a Kyrgios serve on match ball on second round did a Kyrgios handshake after losing agains Pedro Rodenas today. It seems there was as much tension as in Kyrgios/Tsitsipas match. It's curious but there are a lot of divas on the junior circuit

by Anonymousreply 459July 7, 2022 8:03 PM

Don't blame Rafa one bit, he arrived at the right decision, and any way who wants to even be in the same stadium as the Australian uber-clown Kyrgios to play a circus match.

I'm sure that Kyrgi-clown will turn this around and say that Rafa was afraid to play him, which might be true, but not for the same reasons Kyrgi-clown is thinking.

by Anonymousreply 460July 7, 2022 8:04 PM

I know Fritz didn't deserve to be in the SF since he couldn't close it out anyway, but it's a shame he can't at least give Kyrgios one more match before the final just to push him.

Sad that Prehistosur lost the mixed final, but she was dragging her poor partner down anyway. Krawczyk could be a bigger star if she had stronger results, she's quite pretty in a conventional All-American kind of way. Weird that only the winners got to speak.

They showed another mixed legends match before this one (Cara Black & Todd Woodbridge vs Mansour Bahrami & Conchita Martinez). Cara Black could honestly come back to the doubles tour today and compete for titles again.

by Anonymousreply 461July 7, 2022 8:08 PM

I hope Rafa gets the last laugh watching Kyrios cave under pressure by shoving him in to a Slam final against Novaxx.

by Anonymousreply 462July 7, 2022 8:29 PM

Kyrgios is due for a letdown or to throw in a clunker. I expect that to happen in the final.

by Anonymousreply 463July 7, 2022 8:32 PM

haha, it also sticks it to Novak, as in "here Novak, you play this clown, I can't be bothered"

by Anonymousreply 464July 7, 2022 8:33 PM

An abdomen tear for a tennis player is a non starter going forward in just about every single instance. The core is involved in every single shot. Mostly the serve. I think Rafa still plays if the injury couldn't get worse. But it 100% can get worse. Much worse. (Yeah, I know Novak did in the Aussie a couple years back. But that was in insanely big risk.)

So to break it down:

He probably couldn't win with it.

And it could hurt his career going forward.

And he only has a year or so left in that career as is. He wants to be able to play the USO and the slams next year.

It's the absolute worst for him. I'm crushed. But he's doing the right thing.

by Anonymousreply 465July 7, 2022 9:06 PM

Whoever loses the men's final, it will be delicious.

by Anonymousreply 466July 7, 2022 9:16 PM

If he makes it to the final, I hope Cam Norrie doesn’t lose.

by Anonymousreply 467July 7, 2022 9:19 PM

Maybe Kyrgios will be arrested before the final?

by Anonymousreply 468July 7, 2022 9:26 PM

Then who would replace him, R468?

by Anonymousreply 469July 7, 2022 10:18 PM

He wouldn't be replaced. It would be a w/o for Cam Norrie.

by Anonymousreply 470July 7, 2022 10:20 PM

If Zverev wasn't injured, he'd probably be in the place of Kyrgios now.

by Anonymousreply 471July 8, 2022 12:07 AM

so pissed we're only getting 1 men's SF.

Fritz is just another pathetic ATP player for losing to injured old Nadal. An ab strain is serious and no player wants to end up with a tear. Hopefully he'll be able to play the USO

I want the big 2 to be healthy and lose, not get injured or retire.

The state of the men's game has never been worse when only injury can seemingly can take out someone who's almost 40.

by Anonymousreply 472July 8, 2022 12:12 AM

What a lousy Wimbledon it has been this year.

by Anonymousreply 473July 8, 2022 12:31 AM

Rybakina is the worst finalist since Natalie Tazuiat.

by Anonymousreply 474July 8, 2022 12:36 AM

Where are we putting Labeur on the Butch/Femme scale ladies? I've got her somewhere around 7.5-8.5.

by Anonymousreply 475July 8, 2022 12:45 AM

Rafa is faking his withdrawal! Stop believing in what you read, sheep!

by Anonymousreply 476July 8, 2022 12:47 AM

I might be in the minority but I'm looking forward to see a Kyrgios vs Djokovic final. And I would'nt mind either one of them winning.

by Anonymousreply 477July 8, 2022 12:51 AM

Anybody but Djokovics. Except on the other hand, I want to see Kyrgios humiliated if possible.

by Anonymousreply 478July 8, 2022 12:54 AM

“Nole” team or Norrie team?

by Anonymousreply 479July 8, 2022 1:06 AM

The only acceptable outcome is both Kyrgios and Djokovic have injuries in the final match, at the exact same time.

by Anonymousreply 480July 8, 2022 1:23 AM

The whole tournament is screwed up and diminished because they excluded the Russian players. Whoever wins should have an asterisk by their names.

Also, I would choose anyone in the world to win over Kyrgios. Can't believe that piece of trash made it to the final.

by Anonymousreply 481July 8, 2022 1:31 AM

R481 How do you figure? Which Russians would have 'saved' this tournament? Medvedev isn't the greatest on grass (his best Wimbledon result is a 4th round).

by Anonymousreply 482July 8, 2022 1:50 AM

It's funny how Djokovic's fans have been swearing up and down that Rafa has been faking his injuries. Didn't he say he had a 2cm ab tear at the 2021 Australian Open? (IIRC he was also two sets down to Taylor Fritz). Then *magically* fought through the pain and won the title? Well this is what a REAL ab tear looks like, fools.

by Anonymousreply 483July 8, 2022 1:57 AM

How will the elitists of the Wimbledon committee feel if this year's champs are Russian Rybakina and possible domestic abuser Kyrgios? What a champion's ball photo that will be

has the British press been asking Rybakina about the war at all? she's about to get more attention than ever before in her life leading up to this final

by Anonymousreply 484July 8, 2022 2:06 AM

Rybakina is playing for Kazakhstan and I think that's all that really matters. I mean, the British have effectively 'bought' tennis players themselves like Rusedski and Johanna Konta. It's a political decision so it's the flag that matters.

by Anonymousreply 485July 8, 2022 2:09 AM
An abdomen tear for a tennis player is a non starter going forward in just about every single instance. The core is involved in every single shot. Mostly the serve. I think Rafa still plays if the injury couldn't get worse. But it 100% can get worse. Much worse. (

Eet hurt so mush!

by Anonymousreply 486July 8, 2022 3:20 AM

Is it possible Rafa could never pick his ass again, from this injury?

by Anonymousreply 487July 8, 2022 3:44 AM

I was hoping Halep could keep it together and win this tournament. I like Ons a lot and would be happy to see her win it, but if past is prologue, it seems quite likely that she’s going to choke.

This is setting up to be the least compelling ladies final since Dementieva / Myskina. It’s boring to have a “big two” or “big four” or whatever, but I think it’s even crappier to have a bunch of one-slam-wonders like Ostapenko and Raducanu and Krejickova. I know lots of folks here have moaned and groaned about Serena being GOAT for so many years, but it’s actually kind of nice to have a couple reliable champions who can sometimes lose in a surprising upset.

by Anonymousreply 488July 8, 2022 3:50 AM

The Dementieva/Myskina final only happened because Capriati showed up flat against Myskina who she had never lost to in the semifinal. She had just straight setted Serena in the quarters and had a huge letdown after a good convincing win. She became the favorite running away and had another Capriati moment/meltdown. Pam Shriver had her all but accepting the trophy then and there.

by Anonymousreply 489July 8, 2022 3:59 AM

My favorite recent era in the ladies game was when Justine Henin was in top form and consistently giving Serena a run for her money. You also had a very athletic Clijsters who could go deep and even win slams, as well as Azarenka who could hang with them when she was fit.

Since then, the only women who’ve made me excited to tune in were Kerber when she had like a year and a half run of winning everything, and then Barty. If Barty hadn’t retired prematurely, we’d probably currently be able to enjoy a compelling rivalry between her and Swiatek that would be akin to graf/seles.

by Anonymousreply 490July 8, 2022 4:05 AM

Not one of Justine and Serena's matches were as great as the Serena-Capriati matches. I don't think their matches were ever all that dramatic and well played. Even the one when Justine cheated. Capriati-Serena have at least 4 or 5 classic matches. I think they played 17 times and were 10-7. All but two went 3 sets and most were deep into the 3rd. Not many players at that point had that many wins against Serena.

by Anonymousreply 491July 8, 2022 4:10 AM

By far the worst men's Wimby in recent memory. Last year held that distinction until this year.

Can't wait for what new horrors 2023 brings!

by Anonymousreply 492July 8, 2022 5:55 AM

That was an easy payday for Kyrgios. I dislike Djokovic but I loathe Kyrgios, so the final (assuming it’s Djokovic) will be a hate-fest for me. I will be watching in the hope that trashy Nick gets humiliated and has a meltdown.

by Anonymousreply 493July 8, 2022 6:16 AM

What's in Novak's bottle?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 494July 8, 2022 7:08 AM

In his whole professional career, Kyrgios has never had a coach. Yeah, I think it shows.

by Anonymousreply 495July 8, 2022 7:12 AM

Nick Kyrgios is a brilliant tennis player who appears to be focused for maybe the first time ever in this tournament. The level of his antics against Tsissypants this time around were no worse than the gamesmanship typical of Tsissy himself, or the decades of nonsense by Nadal for that matter. Hoping Kyrgios doesn't melt down and gives it his all in the Final--win or lose it's gonna be excellent tennis entertainment if Nick stays cool and keeps his focus on the tennis. I'm with R477--Kyrgios and Djoker are potentially a great matchup and I'll be happy to see either one take it.

by Anonymousreply 496July 8, 2022 7:18 AM

Kyrgios could have likely beaten Nadal even if he were healthy as he did it 8 years ago right at Wimbledon. He had his chances in their Indian Wells match this year too but mentally imploded

there's just no defending the men's game right now that 2 guys in their mid 30s physically outlast everyone (provided they're not injured) and are more consistent. The guys in their mid to late 20s right now are just pathetic with their inability to win slams. You can admire the level of skill and stamina that Nadal and Djokovic have which I do but the rest of the top men (except for teenagers and early 20s guys) are an absolute joke.

Just this year alone, Nadal almost lost about 6-7 times but the opponents found ways to choke and come up lame (and then there was Zverev's freak injury). So we have Nadal not in dominant form but still dominating the tour. That's how bad things are

Now maybe if Berrettini hadn't tested positive for covid this tournament could have been different but we'll never know

by Anonymousreply 497July 8, 2022 7:30 AM

Djokovic vs. Kyrgios in the final? My two faves? Count me in! But no, remember, these two are the most unsavory characters on the tour: count me the fuck out!

Geez it's the worst best thing that has actually ever happened to me. I feel like flying in a chaos of utter cognitive dissonance. How could this not have happened back in the early 2010s, when my relationship to these players were not as complicated as they are today?

by Anonymousreply 498July 8, 2022 7:47 AM

Berettini getting COVID was the killer.

by Anonymousreply 499July 8, 2022 8:04 AM

Djokovic is deeply unpleasant to watch in comparison to Nadal and Federer, who both play under the same pressure without blowing their tops. Kyygios is a bampot, as we say in Scotland.

by Anonymousreply 500July 8, 2022 8:43 AM

My only hope now is Kuntios goes on a drug-fueled bender on his extra day off, shag a rough old skank, and catches monkeypox.

I actually think there's a 40% chance of this happening.

by Anonymousreply 501July 8, 2022 8:43 AM

Kyrgios would be the most disgusting GS winner ever. Even Zverev would be a better winner than him.

Ryan PENISton!

NADAL WITHDREW DUE TO ABDOMINAL INJURY.

by Anonymousreply 504July 8, 2022 10:20 AM

R497 Don't make me laugh. They played several times at GS after that match and Nadal always won

I doubt Kyrgios will be able to give a fight against Novak because he is amazingly good at destroying himself

by Anonymousreply 505July 8, 2022 10:40 AM

And i think the Krejcikova- Palyuchenkova final was way less interesting than this one. At least Ons is a top player and Rybakina was hyped to be a to too. And of course there's a clear contrast in their styles

by Anonymousreply 506July 8, 2022 10:41 AM

Tyrone Mings was in the crowd at Wimbledon yesterday🔥🤳👑🌊

Unless Norrie pulls off an amazing upset. I'll be skipping this final just like I did back in the days when ugly mean old sods Connors and McEnroe sniped and snarled at each other on the grass.

by Anonymousreply 508July 8, 2022 11:50 AM

R508 no one will miss you.

by Anonymousreply 509July 8, 2022 11:53 AM

Thanks, R509, I'll take your definitive word that you speak for no one.

Seven-time champion Serena Williams snubbed the Centre Court centenary celebrations after Wimbledon officials allegedly refused to let her keep her five courtesy cars for the whole tournament.

Williams is understood to have asked for the use of five vehicles, for herself, her husband, her sister, and mother and her coach. While ordinary players are allocated a single car, some top players are granted an additional vehicle for their coach, although Federer is among the very few believed to have the use of five cars at the championships when he is competing.

A Wimbledon source said Serena was disappointed when Wimbledon rejected her request to extend the use of the cars past the normal limit of 24 hours after a player is knocked out.

“She wanted to use the cars for the whole two weeks because that’s what happens at the other grand slams. She was told that was not possible because they had to be used by the other players.

by Anonymousreply 511July 8, 2022 1:21 PM

I love me some Serena, but that is ridiculous behavior described by r511, especially considering how much money she has.

by Anonymousreply 512July 8, 2022 1:26 PM

Not only that, her husband is a fucking billionaire! he can't rent his own car?

"Wimbledon organisers have asked players to rein in maxing out their food allowances, it has been reported.

Those playing in this year’s championships, including tennis legends Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, are given a £90 ($108) daily food allowance at the All England Tennis Club’s (AELTC) restaurants.

Coaches are given around half that amount, to spend on food and drink using accreditation tags that can be scanned.

Players can use their daily budgets at six places, including two restaurants, two sandwich bars and two coffee shops.

But there have been reports that some are maxing out their daily allowances, leading to concern that Wimbledon could run short of supplies, according to the Guardian.

The publication reported that one coach bought 27 probiotic yoghurt drinks in a bid to spend their full daily allowance, prompting the AELTC to email players and politely ask them to rein it in.

The email is believed to have asked competitors to be more “judicious” when spending their allowances.

This is thought to be in a bid to prevent potential food shortages as opposed to saving money, as meals have already been accounted for in event budgets."

by Anonymousreply 514July 8, 2022 1:36 PM

yes, I read about that a few days ago, someone took like 27 yogurts! it was a coach but didn't name the person. probably halep's coach. can't stand him

by Anonymousreply 515July 8, 2022 1:46 PM

A glass of Pimms is nearly £10 this year though, it's a bit ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 516July 8, 2022 1:49 PM

At the US open, a Honey Deuce (official drink) is $20, you get to keep the plastic cup. But that was last year's price. Probably gonna be more expensive this year. everything is.

by Anonymousreply 517July 8, 2022 2:01 PM

is that sunblock on Norrie's face?

by Anonymousreply 518July 8, 2022 2:11 PM

There's nothing remotely entetaining about Kyrgios and his trashy behavior.

Today's match features the nightmare pairing of Patrick McEnroe and Chris Fowler. Jo-burg? Fowler is such a douche.

by Anonymousreply 519July 8, 2022 2:24 PM

Jo-burg, Seth Efrica.

by Anonymousreply 520July 8, 2022 2:29 PM

Come on, Super Cam!

Yeah, that's sun block. You can tell he's got quite a lot of sun damage already.

by Anonymousreply 521July 8, 2022 2:46 PM

Cam is off to a sensational start. I wonder if he can keep this up.

by Anonymousreply 522July 8, 2022 2:48 PM

haha, Djokovic looked pissed. He's going to have to give himself another mirror pep talk isn't he?

by Anonymousreply 523July 8, 2022 2:49 PM

IT'S H A P P E N I N G.

Crowd is a bit lifeless though ... Sue Barker should've spiked the Pimms.

by Anonymousreply 524July 8, 2022 2:55 PM

Seeing a Kyrigos-Djokovic final would make me recall Kissinger's words on the Iran-Iraq war: too bad they can't both lose.

by Anonymousreply 525July 8, 2022 2:56 PM

R524 I love how Sue is compelled to remind the audience, guests, and the other commentators that she did actually used to play pro. She's done it every other time I've seen or heard from her this tourney.

by Anonymousreply 526July 8, 2022 2:58 PM

Why must ESPN subject us to Chris Fowler?

by Anonymousreply 527July 8, 2022 3:04 PM

Rybikna doesn't grunt or constantly scream and fist pump after every point...she's so calm and composed and even when she beat Halep there was no major victory dance like you see from so many others. If she can stay this emotionally relaxed in the final she will win. Ons can crumble fast once she feels pressure.

R529 hmmmm he sounds like an Avoidant personality, speaking as one.

by Anonymousreply 530July 8, 2022 3:18 PM

If he actually got a coach the coach would see it as part of his job to try to give Kyrgios some tough talk and explain/motivate.

It seems like a waste of talent.

by Anonymousreply 531July 8, 2022 3:18 PM

R529 Well as if we needed more proof that he's actually stupid and with a sub-par IQ. Not everybody is born intelligent you know.

by Anonymousreply 532July 8, 2022 3:22 PM

Video games can be very addictive and given that Nick was a fat kid, it seems that he probably is prone to addiction. It'll be interesting to see what happens when his tennis career is over..

by Anonymousreply 533July 8, 2022 3:25 PM

Cuntovich.

by Anonymousreply 534July 8, 2022 3:31 PM

Corrie choking already?

by Anonymousreply 535July 8, 2022 3:31 PM

How sad that the final is likely to have two vile personalities playing for the trophy.

by Anonymousreply 536July 8, 2022 3:31 PM

Djokovic in the bathroom like Narcissus looking at his reflection.

by Anonymousreply 537July 8, 2022 3:34 PM

God I fucking hate that pinched looking anti vaxxing arrogant cunt. He is despicable.

by Anonymousreply 538July 8, 2022 3:36 PM

^^Norrie

by Anonymousreply 539July 8, 2022 3:37 PM

Djokovic reminds me of Celine Dion. They have the same gaunt, angular face.

by Anonymousreply 540July 8, 2022 3:37 PM

R538 It’s the little close-set eyes that are so unpleasant to me. That and his head is shaped like a bullet.

by Anonymousreply 541July 8, 2022 3:41 PM

noavxx slipped and fell. too bad he got up straight away

by Anonymousreply 542July 8, 2022 3:42 PM

ooh, I enjoyed that fall a wee bit too much.

by Anonymousreply 543July 8, 2022 3:42 PM

Well, this is depressing. It was always a very long shot.

by Anonymousreply 544July 8, 2022 3:43 PM

Doubtful that Djokovic has any reflection, R537.

by Anonymousreply 545July 8, 2022 3:48 PM

Crowd obviously rooting for Norrie. Novaxx gets polite applause when he gets a point, Norrie gets cheers. Might not make a difference in the end though as Norrie seems to be choking.

by Anonymousreply 546July 8, 2022 3:51 PM

Who is the man in the pink jacket?

by Anonymousreply 547July 8, 2022 3:53 PM

Norrie is not good enough

by Anonymousreply 548July 8, 2022 3:57 PM

I think it's his agent or business partner?

by Anonymousreply 549July 8, 2022 3:59 PM

Honestly, once Novak puts that cap on, you know you're totally BARBECUED.

by Anonymousreply 551July 8, 2022 4:07 PM

Neck Beard not setting the world on fire.

by Anonymousreply 552July 8, 2022 4:09 PM

Honestly I blame this crowd ... WHERE are the traditional English sunburnt beer bellies bellowing out boorish chants and obnoxious tabloidy jokes??

by Anonymousreply 553July 8, 2022 4:14 PM

Where's Günter Parche when you need him most?

by Anonymousreply 554July 8, 2022 4:27 PM

We need to talk about this sassy umpire.

by Anonymousreply 555July 8, 2022 4:32 PM

Not really fair to say that Norrie's 'choked'. He's just not been able to cope with Djokovic raising his level. He's fought all the way through.

by Anonymousreply 556July 8, 2022 4:36 PM

Norrie is 26 and he's only ever been to the 3rd round of slams before this one. He was never really capable of it.

by Anonymousreply 557July 8, 2022 4:39 PM

Cam's giving us some nice bouncy VPL, irregardless of the final outcome. I think we should be grateful.

by Anonymousreply 558July 8, 2022 4:43 PM

ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

by Anonymousreply 559July 8, 2022 4:47 PM

Small comfort in that even if Boobs takes the W, he'll still be # 7 in the rankings.

by Anonymousreply 560July 8, 2022 4:52 PM

yeah I'm not watching this final. They are both massive smarmy assholes. Can they both somehow lose?

by Anonymousreply 561July 8, 2022 4:55 PM

That was over too fast!

by Anonymousreply 562July 8, 2022 4:55 PM

Nasty Novak always bubbles up to the surface in the end.

by Anonymousreply 563July 8, 2022 4:56 PM

between the 2, I would prefer Nick K.

There hasn't been a winner from AUS for a long time. Nick K is a very fucked up person. he's damaged mentally. he's far from perfect, so I guess I will "cheer" for him to win it. I pity him.

by Anonymousreply 564July 8, 2022 4:58 PM

I am really curious about those charges against him. I wonder how bad it is.

by Anonymousreply 565July 8, 2022 4:59 PM

If Djokovic wins yet another one I hope its his last. He is so fucking smug. He has such a punchable face.

by Anonymousreply 566July 8, 2022 4:59 PM

Uhm, Novaxx, they're only clapping to be polite.

by Anonymousreply 567July 8, 2022 5:00 PM

I'll back Kuntios in the Final if he promises to retire immediately afterwards and never darken any tennis ever again .
ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh -

I agree with the “ugh”. “Irregardless” has the same effect on me.

by Anonymousreply 570July 8, 2022 5:05 PM

Nick K has never lost to Novaxx....

by Anonymousreply 571July 8, 2022 5:08 PM

Dr. Evil v. Quasimodo

by Anonymousreply 572July 8, 2022 5:08 PM

Novak started so tight, reminded me of last year's US Open. Medvedev, of course, so much tougher than Norrie.

I think back on Boris Becker, Novak's former coach, who late in his career used to drop the first set almost as a matter of form. Just took him some time to get into a match.

Norrie played so well in the first set, but then the errors crept in and Novak got his mind into it. During the on-court interview, I felt Novak's mind drifting a bit--he wasn't looking at the interviewer at all. I think tennis is very, very mental for him, perhaps more than other players.

That will give Nick an advantage, I think. Nick is the "disrupter" as the ESPN guys put it, and that sounds right. Novak has never won a set off of him and Nick has gotten into his head with his criticism of Novak. (Total cunt, that Nick.) I think Nick has a serious shot. And it would be interesting in Wimbledon history to see it happen, reminds me of other interesting one-off champions like Ivanisevic or Krajicek. (Though those guys were both much more consistently at the top of the men's game.)

by Anonymousreply 573July 8, 2022 5:09 PM

Just checked the quant odds and Kygios is expected to only have a 19% chance against Djokovic.

by Anonymousreply 578July 8, 2022 9:54 PM

the ratings will be good. Australia will be watching and the younger generation love NK.

by Anonymousreply 579July 8, 2022 10:04 PM

Billy Nick Kyrgios.

by Anonymousreply 580July 8, 2022 10:06 PM

Which ever one loses, I hope they are irredeemably humiliated and never darken the sport of tennis again.

by Anonymousreply 581July 9, 2022 2:04 PM

Every time Chris uses “aggressive” as an adverb I want to punch her in the mouth.

by Anonymousreply 582July 9, 2022 2:06 PM

Ironic that Wimbledon banned Russian and Belorussian players. I was so hoping for Ons. And fuck tomorrow's final.

by Anonymousreply 583July 9, 2022 3:11 PM

What a letdown. Poor Elena gets no points, either. Stupidest Wimbledon ever.

by Anonymousreply 584July 9, 2022 3:29 PM

Ebden/Purcell team or ic, Mekt/ic, Pav team?

by Anonymousreply 585July 9, 2022 4:06 PM

Mektic/Pavic.

I'd bang Mektic.

by Anonymousreply 586July 9, 2022 4:53 PM

What is Kyrgios ranting about now? It's his box's fault that he lost the set?

by Anonymousreply 587July 10, 2022 2:22 PM

The English weather, R587.

by Anonymousreply 588July 10, 2022 2:27 PM

one guy got thrown out. not sure what was said. the cunt was screaming something in the middle of a point.

by Anonymousreply 589July 10, 2022 2:41 PM

is Nick trying to rattle Novaxx's cage? he's speaking to himself or to him before serving?

by Anonymousreply 590July 10, 2022 2:47 PM

Nick wants the kid in the crowd thrown out. and he was complaining about a guy in the front row who has had lots of drinks and keeps talking to him, distracting him

by Anonymousreply 591July 10, 2022 2:52 PM

Kyrgios complaining about distractions? That's rich.

by Anonymousreply 593July 10, 2022 2:57 PM

I think it was a woman in the front row. It sounded like Kyrgios said "she looks like she's had about 700 drinks."

the crowd is pro Nick. so many people are shouting "c'mon nick!"

by Anonymousreply 595July 10, 2022 3:04 PM

I get that Novaxx is divisive and it's great to have a new champion, but Kyrgios? He's such a clown.

by Anonymousreply 596July 10, 2022 3:08 PM

It's a choice between an asshole and a cunt.
