Nick could actually win this whole Slam, as disgusting as that would be. I could see him rattling Rafa and then Djoko to get them off their game. What a shitty Wimbledon this has turned out to be already! I agree with the decision to not allow Russian players. But honestly, I think Kyrios should have been suspended after his Tsitipas match yesterday. Kyrgios obviously fancies himself as a 'disrupter' in a sport that really doesn't need disrupting in the way he thinks it does. In the end he's just a straight up asshole that should be receiving much stiffer penalties than he has received.

Wimbledon organisers and Britain's tennis authorities said on Monday they have appealed against fines handed to them by the WTA, for excluding Russian and Belarussian players from this year's grasscourt events.
As part of the penalties, the LTA was slapped with a fine of £620,000 (about $753,000) while the All England Club has been asked to pay £207,000 ($250,000)

by Anonymous | reply 39 | July 4, 2022 6:01 PM |
I don't really see anything 'daddy' about Fritz except for the actual kid he had when he was like 18 (which gives me more white trash, rather than 'hot dad'). His sunken eyes, thin greasy hair, hunched posture, mouth breathing and sinewy figure... his servebot game is also enough to put anyone to sleep.
Jason Kubler is much hotter, gorgeous skin - but he was too tired coming from qualies to do anything (and doesn't really belong at this level anyway just yet). I loved the closeup of him getting a literal butt massage through his white shorts - delicious, the trainer was squeezing the cheek so hard. I thought it was sweet when they were waiting for Fritz before the coin toss and he was talking to Mo Layhani about how excited he was to be there and what a beautiful court it was, saying it was "unreal" and couldn't believe he was actually getting to play there, even asking Mo what it was like when he first got to umpire a big court like this. A really nice guy.

Tomljanovic is so random, she has the talent but not the heart to be a champion. Even in the interview she said she didn't think she could actually do it and broke into tears. Nice to see her emerging in her own right and no longer just a punchline for getting screwed over by Kyrgios and Matteo.
Garin really is gorgeous. Re the Alcaraz/Nakashima acne - I think doping controls and side effects prevent them from using medications like acutane.

really impressed that Halep destroyed Badosa so easily especially given that Badosa upset an in-form Kvitova in the previous round
the top half of the ladies' draw isn't bad at all. Rybakina is a very good player-big hitter and server which translates to grass. Anisimova is having her most consistent year including an improved serve and she always had the groundstrokes. The only one who shouldn't reach the final is Tomljanovic
by Anonymous | reply 82 | July 5, 2022 8:56 AM |

You guys make it hard for me, considering that historically my two faves on the ATP tour are Djokovic and Kyrgios and I'm not even making that up. But wait, no, it's not your fault: Djokovic and Kyrgios make it especially hard for anyone to root for them. Kyrgios' ego keeps growing and growing and he's turning into a bully so I just have to ignore him, and with Djokovic, the MO was to turn off the TV the minute he wins so that I didn't get exposed to the ludricous boobs out twirls. Then came COVID, Nole's hallucinating shenanigans and you cannot objectively keep rooting for him, so I have to force myself to root for the opponents but you know how it goes, as the match progresses, you lose your focus and Djokovic makes it a point to come out with an absolutely outrageous BH DTL and here I am, jumping out of my couch like a lunatic (Tom Cruise's fashion) and have to regroup: "no, what are you doing? You're supposed to hate the man, not to cheer on his tennis.
It's really hard, Datalounge. Go easy on me.

Eldergay flashback. I remembered a 1975 interview with BJK when she was a straight, married lady who demurred to her husband and didn't like women libbers.
-Her family—"straight out of Archie Bunker," according to Larry—was solid, traditional Protestant middle class, fired by hard work and a fear of God. Even now, her parents would like to see her abandon all this gallivanting around the world and settle down and have some kids. Growing up in Long Beach, Calif., Billie Jean deviated little from the values of her happy home. Her father, a fireman, was also a devoted sports fan, and so the daughter's participation in sports was not considered aberrant any more than her deep religious conviction. After all, going back at least as far as Jo March, little girls have been tolerated as tomboys.

by Anonymous | reply 156 | July 5, 2022 4:18 PM |
Seems like every single time I've signed on the last few days, it was primetime but not many posts. Anyway, really disappointed in Carlos Alcaraz. Two Slams in a row he's come out flat in an important match. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come. His arm was wrapped, though, so not sure if he was dealing with an injury.
Also, the continuing disappointment of these younger generations not being able to take down Nadal or Djokovic at the Slams is endlessly frustrating. Nadal embarrassed Ruud in the French final and got through several other matches that were winnable by his opponent. Same script in Melbourne. Now Sinner loses after being up two sets to none against Djokovic. Shades of Tsitsipas in the 2021 French final.
I'd be surprised if it isn't yet another Djokovic-Nadal final. Fritz has a shot against Nadal. If he gets ahead early, though, he can't let Nadal back in. But I suspect Nadal will find a way through.

Had a nap. Woke up to Novaxx winning. Absolutely disgusting. I have a feeling he will win Wimbledon. He's playing way better than Nadal, which pains me to say. Nadal also has the worst draw and Novaxx gets a day more rest. Fuck this shit. I took a break from tennis for years. Nadal's recent victories brought me back, and not to mention Alcaraz, who has shown potential. Wondering if I should take another 5 year break from tennis. Hopefully by then the disgsgusting Novaxx is retired.

Raducanu is early in her career. Despite her USO breakthrough, it’s unrealistic to expect too much from her for another year or two.
As for Murray, he’s clearly fighting retirement. Not realistic to expect him to contend on a major at the age after his hip surgery.

Ons is fun to watch because she's not a baseliner.
by Anonymous | reply 199 | July 5, 2022 6:47 PM |
Ons showed beautiful variety and tired Bouzkova out with the dropshots and sharp angles. Huge serving, strong defence, and a charming interview to boot. I hope she wins the title. It seems a lot in the tennis community (and even that one poster in this thread) want the skinny / conventionally attractive / 'glamorous' types to win slams (a la Raducanuu and Sharapova and Anisimova), but at least this girl has some personality and a spectacular game.
Speaking of Hingis, she and Clijsters had a 6-0 6-3 win over Schett and Dechy. They will probably win the legends title. It was also fun to see big hitting Ivanisevic and Pierce team up for the mixed legends, especially since no players on the current tour have any real star quality. Is this the first slam to have a mixed legends event?

men's tennis is just SO COMPELLING!
INCREDIBLE how middle aged chronically injured Nadal and antivaxxer Djokovic keep outlasting guys 10-15 years their junior in marathon slam matches!
From the 2021 RG final to the 2022 AO and now today's Wimbledon QF
those young guys are SO impressive! They sometimes can win a set or 2! wowzers!
I look forward to another 10 years domination when Djokovic will have gone all gray and Nadal will be totally bald!
let's praise the young guys for having the COURAGE to step on court with them!

Norrie doesn't get enough on his shots to really bother Djokovic though he's improved his serve somewhat. Sometimes his groundstokes are too "spinny" which is going to hurt him against the best of the best.
I think if Fritz can shorten points he'll have a shot against Nadal but obviously the match is going to be a big test of his consistency and stamina. He has the same build as Sinner, long and lanky

None of you are talking about how subdued Novak was, though.
I was wondering if he's ill with corona.
Not much roaring and even when he rose up out the crypt in the third set, it was a marginal improvement in his demeanour.
Well, I didn't see the entire fifth because of the channel swap...
I really hoped that big cheer Jannik received at the start of the fifth would inspire him.
But anyway, point is Novak didn't seem himself, and although he can do without crowd support, the Brits were utterly electric for Norrie today and will be absolutely enflamed for the semi-final... Novak will get crumbs from them, if he's lucky. They certainly won't tolerate any antics. Don't count out the upset just yet.

by Anonymous | reply 225 | July 5, 2022 10:38 PM |
Really hard to pick where this is going... I think Nole gets to the final, Norrie should be no problem, but I really could see Rafa lose to Kyrgios.
A Kyrgios-Djokovic final would be something, wouldn't it? Nick hates Novak, yet defended him during the affair in Australia, which Novak recently credited him with, once again. Maybe it's Nick's destiny to win one Slam and then be done with the whole thing. He did say the other day that he told friends he was motivated to go to Wimbledon this year and win the whole thing just to shut everyone up. He's so talented--when he puts his mind to it, he can win!
That said, Garin is an Iron Man. Won't be that shocked if he grinds Rafa down. Daddy Fritz has no chance, I fear. (Though he won Eastbourne!)

[quote] [The porcine] Raonic struggled with calf and right leg injuries for most of the year. After losing in the fourth round at the 2021 Miami Masters to eventual champion Hubert Hurkacz in three sets, he took a hiatus that lasted for three months when he returned at the 2021 Atlanta Open in July. As the top seed, he lost in his opening match against eventual finalist Brandon Nakashima in three sets. After the loss, he once again took another hiatus due to his injuries.

The Wimbledon interviewer *repeatedly* asking her about what a big day it was for Khazakhstan and Rybakina completely ignoring her every time... lol. Also the excessive closeups of one person in the crowd with a Kazakh flag. She was born in Moscow, lives in Moscow, trains in Moscow, pays taxes in Russia (literally funding the war), and played for Russia until 2018. As much as Wimbledon and the BBC try and cover up the awkward truth that a Russian player has a strong chance of winning this title, they can't avoid it.
In an interview from earlier in the week when asked about the ban, she said (quote) "I hope everyone will forget about the whole thing next year." It could get very awkward for Kate Middleton potentially handing the Venus Rosewater Dish to her. And I think she has a chance, she hit 15 aces today.
by Anonymous | reply 252 | July 6, 2022 2:29 PM |
I definitely don't like Rybakina for that. Kazakhstan have clearly helped her financially and with coaching support (the captain of the national team, Yaroslava Shvedova, has been in her box throughout Wimbledon). Too bad people are going to wank furiously over it if she wins and she isn't helping matters. There are a number of players who moved nationalities for money but the country expects to get national pride from it.
by Anonymous | reply 253 | July 6, 2022 2:37 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 259 | July 6, 2022 2:51 PM |
R254 Speaking as an Aussie - Tomljanovic is about as Australian as Zhang Shuai. And it's always a bit of an elephant in the room when at the AO or Fed Cup they try and promote her as one of our Aussie girls (even on the news this week) and then the crowd watch her and hear her American accent and Croatian coaching. But it's not the same issue because Croatians are not banned from Wimbledon. If Rybakina wins, a lot of her prize money from this week (incl. sponsors) will go directly into Putin's pocket, through her taxes. Samsonova on the other hand was banned for having the Russian flag, but lives and grew up in Italy, speaks Italian as a first language, etc. It's just a bit awkward.
Nick's loud talking when Garin is about to serve is shameless gamesmanship. I hate that sexy thighs is already choking.
by Anonymous | reply 260 | July 6, 2022 2:51 PM |
Fritz let Nadal back into this match. He should have concentrated on making sure he held serve. Instead he plays an error-strewn game to hand Nadal a break. I'd be surprised if Nadal loses this set.

R253 Rybakina didn't even go to a tennis school. She went to a regular high school and was training on her own at the Spartak Club at afternoon between homework and without a personal coach, all this when she was already 18. Then Kazakhstan stepped in and helped her. It's thanks to Kazakhstan if she has a career at all. Ungrateful.
R260 How did Tomljanovic get the citizenship if she wasn't even living there to begin with? I'm not familiar with Australian citizenship.
The absolute WORST in terms of nationality is Osaka anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 265 | July 6, 2022 3:07 PM |
R265, Before 2014, Tomljanović played for her country of birth, Croatia. She began competing for Australia at the 2014 US Open after obtaining permanent residency in Australia. For the next four years she was required to represent Croatia at all non-Grand Slam events,[4] until she was granted Australian citizenship in January 2018, allowing her to represent the country at all events on the WTA Tour.[5]
Tomljanović was born in Zagreb to Croatian father Ratko Tomljanović who played handball professionally (winner of the 1992 and 1993 handball European Cup) and Bosnian mother Emina.[6] Her elder sister Hana played tennis for University of Virginia.[6]
She began playing tennis at the age of six and moved to Florida for training when she was 13.[7] She is coached by Fernando Martínez and Rene Gomez.[6] She is also a fan of basketball.[6][8]

R265 Tomljanovic I think had an Australian coach at the time and he arranged it.
Osaka at least was born in Japan and is half-Japanese. She didn't get support from the U.S. either which is why she moved but at least she's somewhat patriotic about being Japanese and makes an effort.

Nadal with an injury, but Fritz can't break him. Nadal did fire off a string of winners in his last service game, though.

Taylor fucked it up himself in the 4th set.
Nadal doesn't seem to be playing high quality tennis which I've come to expect from him...maybe he's not 100% who knows
Nick is not 100% either.
However, I hope Nick will be OK with his legal case in AU. I hope it's not serious. I want to hear the details. I remember she mentioned that she had to quit her job or something to follow him on tour and he called her a bum...she complained that he's stingy, few gifts etc. So maybe she's trying to get some $$ from him, after putting up with his shit for 2 years. He moved on so fast with this new gf and even bought an apt together and says he wants babies with her etc. The ex must be seething with jealousy.

R345, it’s not a lawsuit for money, it’s a criminal assault charge. In theory, he could face two years in prison. He’s certainly not the last guy on the tour you’d think was capable of behaving violently.
by Anonymous | reply 346 | July 6, 2022 8:55 PM |
Rafa is playing so bad. It's just his utter refusal to quit that's keeping him in matches. He's SO epic. Even when he's not playing epically.
Still, if Nick plays his A game? Rafa doesn't stand a chance right now.
With that in mind, I shall be praying to the tennis gods for the next two days so that my dear Rafa can up his level. Just two more matches. Please!

Someone upthread said he may take a break from following the game. If it's another Nadal-Djokovic final, I may do just that and only follow online until someone other than those two win all the Slams. The inability of the young guns to take down even a hobbled Nadal or an out-of-form Djokovic is just embarrassing for tennis.
The will of the Big 3, especially Nadal, is amazing. However, the lack of it from the younger generations is hurting tennis. That's why there was so much excitement around Alcaraz this spring, but he's so far turned out to be another dud in the Slams.

by Anonymous | reply 353 | July 6, 2022 9:43 PM |
More than the all-important champion's mindset, the younger players don't even really have a MAN's mindset.
Watching the semi-finals in Paris, it was painfully clear that Ruud/Rune were boys, and Nadal/Djokovic were men.
It was in everything - the play, the presence.
It's not just about age, because Nadal, Djok and Fed didn't seem so boyish even in their early twenties, neither did their contemporaries - there's just a lot of infantilism across the board for young men these days that shows up on court ... anyway I don't know whether you'd all agree with that or whether I should articulate further or is this controversial...
by Anonymous | reply 354 | July 6, 2022 9:46 PM |
I'm actually starting to believe Nadal could get a calendar year slam.

by Anonymous | reply 357 | July 6, 2022 9:48 PM |
Best of 5 is such a great format for Rafa and Nole since the rest of the year all the matches are best of 3. There's a bit of a psychological let down when a younger player, having won two sets realizes that they still have to win one more. Add to that, their awareness of all the times Rafa and Nole have come back. It's very intimidating, especially since both those guys grind and will not give any points away. Rafa and Nole know this and its a huge psychological obstacle for younger guys.

As I noted above, I’m not a Rafa fan on court, although he seems like a decent, likable guy off court. However, I wouldn’t mind him winning Wimbledon this year because:
1. I’d rather have anyone win other than Djokovic and Kyrgios
2. I’d like to see someone, whether Rafa or Serena, get closest to reaching or exceeding Margaret Court’s total majors record.
3. I’d like to see a men’s grand slam in my life time rather than just the same man holding the four major titles at once (non-calendar year). I remember Steffi getting hers, and it was anti-climactic because it was so expected and she had no serious rivals at the majors that year.

by Anonymous | reply 367 | July 6, 2022 11:28 PM |
Something I've been thinking the last while is - another way for Nadal and Federer to protect their records from Djokovic would be to coach younger players to defeat him.
Well, they probably don't have any faith in the younger players to get the job done...
But still, Rafael [italic]will[/italic] retire before Novak, you could imagine him coaching Alcaraz ... if Alcaraz is willing to kick his beloved Juan Carlos out of bed.
Roger taking on a grass protégé would certainly have been a better use of his time than gathering dust the past two years.
Normally you'd say they're so rich and accomplished, they'd have no desire to coach, and that their fees would be so much higher than other retired players, but as long as Novak's out there, they'd have a personal investment.

I don't mind the prospect of Rafael winning Wimbledon so much because I associate him with disappointing failures there over the years.
I'd watched Wimbledon before 2008, but somehow that final is my first memory of watching a match.
Well, enough has been said about how beautiful that was.
Had to wait a whole year to see him again, we didn't have channels showing any other tournaments, but of course he was a no-show in 2009.
In 2010, I was away on holiday, so because I didn't witness it, that second victory just didn't happen as far as I was concerned - for years afterward if you'd asked me, I'd have sworn he only won once.
Then of course came years of crashing out in early rounds, and even though he made semi-finals in '18 and '19 - I still always think of him as a disappointment on grass. Been expecting him to crash out at any moment in this tournament.
I still had an interest in watching Rafa until the last year or so, finally have become fatigued like most. It'd be a shame if he won now and I couldn't muster up the enjoyment I would've had watching him win another Wimbledon all those years ago, so I'll try to gear myself up to get in the spirit for that ... and already I have to admit, when faced with the prospect that he'd lose today, my stomach did sink...
by Anonymous | reply 370 | July 6, 2022 11:49 PM |
men's tennis continues to be pathetic and embarrassing but commentators will just orgasm about Nadal and Djokovic
as many critics have said, there's nothing wrong with those 2 still being strong contenders for slams. What looks HORRIBLE for the tour is that both are closer to 40 than 30 yet are still the 2 overwhelming favorites for every fucking slam. Then you see these old men physically outlast guys 10-15 years their junior in a best of 5 time and time again. Then you see opponents choke form winning positions. There's no excuse why the guys from age 23-29 can't dominate the tour but they're just damn mentally weak. Fritz should be ashamed of himself today
I won't be surprised if Kyrgios has a shoulder or leg injury in the next match retiring against Nadal then Nadal gets a walkover in the final after Novaxx Djokocovid tests positive for covid. That's how lame the men's tour has been

R368 lol, an excellent player =/a good coach, just because you are a talented player, it doesn't mean you can transfer your talents to others by coaching them. On the contrary, the successful and accomplished tennis coaches are generally not very good players themselves, most came from a background of lower ranked Top 100 level, rarely a good coach was ever ranked in top 30, they might not be the top ranked players themselves but they do know how to coach others to become better, far better than themselves.

I have no doubt that Rafa is ailing, but his camp does tend to present worst case scenarios so that if he has to default or does play but doesn't play well, it doesn't look as bad since they planted those seeds of disappointment.

So happy Nadal won. I think it was pure adrenaline and will power that got him through the match. He was clearly injured. He might not even be 100 % fit for the Kyrgios match. It's funny that his haters are saying he faked it. Dude, his own dad fucking signaled him to stop playing!!! I doubt he would have done that if he was faking it.
by Anonymous | reply 385 | July 7, 2022 7:44 AM |
I still think Djokovic will win Wimbledon. Nadal is injured and even before he got injured he didn't look that impressive tbh, and this is coming from a Rafa fan. And then you have the fact that he might not even make it to the final. Kyrgios is a horrible match up for him. He always struggles against the big servers. And Kyrgios plays dirty tricks. I don't trust him. He is a bully. Hopefully Nadal and humanity wins, but I fear Kyrgios might just pull it off.

by Anonymous | reply 389 | July 7, 2022 9:31 AM |
I think people get too harsh on Alcaraz. The truth is he had a better result at Wimbledon than Nole, Rafa or even Roger at the same age. He only played two GS being a top player.
In juniors there are two americans in quarterfinals, one macedonian, one croat, one player from hong kong, one swiss and two spaniards (one of them is the youngest in the competition and he won 14 consecutive matches on grass)
by Anonymous | reply 390 | July 7, 2022 10:03 AM |
The people who say Nadal is faking his injury are so dumb.
The guy could barely serve. He let a lot of balls go, instead of chasing them like he normally does. He made so many errors, missing shots he'd normally make.
What exactly does he gain from playing at 50% while "faking" an injury? An Oscar?
by Anonymous | reply 391 | July 7, 2022 10:19 AM |
oh absolutely it's absurd to bash Alcaraz at this stage. He's already achieved so much this year and will be a contender for the USO
btw I have a friend who sat directly behind Tsitsipas' father in the Kyrgios match. He said it was impossible not to see how often Stefanos was looking at his father and getting coaching from him. The ATP tour either needs to allow coaching or get stricter on enforcing it being illegal

[italic]Fabio Fognini appears to question whether Rafael Nadal was injured in his Wimbledon quarter-final win over Taylor Fritz. The Italian posted an article on his Instagram Story showing Nadal's perseverance through injury during his dramatic four hour and 20 minute triumph. Fognini appeared to take exception to the headline and posted: "For sure. Guys stop believe in what you read. Please."[/italic]
by Anonymous | reply 393 | July 7, 2022 10:43 AM |
R393 I guess he must be blind. He was clearly injured. As for how he got through it, like I said; adrenaline and will power. He never stopped fighting.

Did Fabio said a thing when Djokovic did the same thing (since round three) in Australian Open 2020?

It's hilarious ... or sad ... that Cameron hasn't even been mentioned in the above posts of rage and despair.
He'll be in the best position at least psychologically to take on Novak. He'll have been inundated with support from other British athletes, celebrities, the public, the press, William and Kate probably spoke to him in person.
Court No. 1 for his quarter-final seemed to have more energy than any court I've seen at Wimbledon in [italic]years[/italic].
Centre Court will be an absolute ZOO on Friday... Novak is an iron fortress but the Brits will be raining down cannonballs.
I don't know what Cameron's like as a player, if the game isn't there it isn't there, but if anyone in this tournament has a shot against Novak, it's him.

Martin Landaluce is the first semifinalist on the junior tournament. He is very tall for his age (he is 16 the youngest of all players in quarterfinals), has a very good backhand and is very calm on court (nothing like throwing raquets or screaming). This is his 15th consecutive win on grass
by Anonymous | reply 398 | July 7, 2022 11:24 AM |
Is M. Landaluce another blond Spaniard like Fokina?
by Anonymous | reply 399 | July 7, 2022 11:35 AM |
Fokina is actually Swedish Russian though.
by Anonymous | reply 400 | July 7, 2022 11:40 AM |
There are some 'natural blonds' in the north of Spain -- Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and Catalonia. Don't remember seeing any in the Basque Country, but maybe there, too.
by Anonymous | reply 401 | July 7, 2022 11:44 AM |
There are not many blonds in Spain but there's not that unusual.
I'm from Galicia and our ancestors are celts.
Unlike Alejandro, Martín has spanish parents.
Spain has pretty good players born in 2006, apart of Landaluce there's Roger Pascual and Rafael Segado (Segado seems destined to be a very handsome man)
by Anonymous | reply 402 | July 7, 2022 11:50 AM |
To paraphrase Martha Sharapova, "Isn't he back in Italy already???"
I love Fabio's game but he also has a history of drama on the court, overacting when he's hurt (he's basically the male Alize Cornet). And he's also played doubles a lot with Djokovic, so it's no secret where his allegiances lie.
I'm not a Rafa fan and I wish the big 3 would all retire tomorrow (who cares about Margaret Court's fake record? She won those slams against the local librarians). But it was pretty clear he was hampered last night. The serve motion looked very weird and you could tell he didn't trust his feet as much.
by Anonymous | reply 403 | July 7, 2022 12:09 PM |
Mili Poljicak and Pedro Ródenas are the other semifinalists in the junior competition. Spain is doing way better on Wimbledon junior than in RG (where Daniel Mérida was the only one who reached the quarterfinals)

Rafa is practicing this morning, hitting serves very cautiously. He was said to be grimacing from the pain in both his foot and his stomach muscle. He stopped the practice to ask for privacy, and it was granted. Someone from the press did snap some photos and there is great worry among those who saw it, that there is no way he can stretch and run if Nick is going to serve bombs at him. He is such a fighter, he has gotta try.
by Anonymous | reply 409 | July 7, 2022 1:29 PM |
I was just thinking, r406, how refreshing it is to see slicing, dicing, short angles, court craft and tactics being used instead of the boring, mindless ball-slugging that’s been the norm in women’s tennis for over 20 years. Rybakina, e.g., is completely unwatchable compared to these two.

I can't stand Nadal and never could, but I agree there was no way he was faking his injury yesterday. The real complaint should be that 24-year-old Taylor Fritz, 12 years Nadal's junior, couldn't take down a hobbled Nadal.
With the physicality in which Nadal plays the game, we've all been waiting for him to succumb permanently to injuries. I think he's just about there with the foot, knee, and now abdominal strain. If he keeps playing, he'll probably be permanently disabled in some way. Yet he'll still probably win five more French Opens.
by Anonymous | reply 418 | July 7, 2022 2:46 PM |

The absolute best thing about Rybakina is that she doesn't make a sound when hitting the ball. It is so refreshing not to have incessant grunting and screaming.
by Anonymous | reply 434 | July 7, 2022 3:42 PM |
R434 she is also an example of not needing to grunt to hit the ball hard. Rybakina is pummeling the ball and Halep is shrieking with shots that look like they have a lot less sting on them.
by Anonymous | reply 435 | July 7, 2022 3:48 PM |
Grunting is a tactic to put off other players, it's bullshit and bad for tennis's popularity too, they should enforce the rules more (yes, there's actually a rule against it..)
by Anonymous | reply 436 | July 7, 2022 3:50 PM |
I've only just learnt that Rybakina essentially means 'fisherwoman' in Russian - so that's where her 'Fish Queen' nickname comes from!
by Anonymous | reply 437 | July 7, 2022 3:52 PM |
Rybakina's backhand technique is nearly perfect, also her down the line backhand slice is marvellous. Very clean shots, typical Russian school. Halep was an absolute emotional mess.

Devastated for Rafa. I've been a fan for 15 years. I don't understand why he couldn't just fight through it? Take painkillers ffs! He was 2 wins away from another slam and then missing just USO for the CYGS. This was his last shot at a CYGS. He should have just pushed through, won Wimby, taken a few weeks off, then USO. Then he could retire. He will never get this opportunity again. Fuck this. I'm sad and pissed. And those who said Rafa was faking an injury: kindly fuck off.
by Anonymous | reply 454 | July 7, 2022 7:43 PM |

Don't blame Rafa one bit, he arrived at the right decision, and any way who wants to even be in the same stadium as the Australian uber-clown Kyrgios to play a circus match.
I'm sure that Kyrgi-clown will turn this around and say that Rafa was afraid to play him, which might be true, but not for the same reasons Kyrgi-clown is thinking.
by Anonymous | reply 460 | July 7, 2022 8:04 PM |
I know Fritz didn't deserve to be in the SF since he couldn't close it out anyway, but it's a shame he can't at least give Kyrgios one more match before the final just to push him.
Sad that Prehistosur lost the mixed final, but she was dragging her poor partner down anyway. Krawczyk could be a bigger star if she had stronger results, she's quite pretty in a conventional All-American kind of way. Weird that only the winners got to speak.
They showed another mixed legends match before this one (Cara Black & Todd Woodbridge vs Mansour Bahrami & Conchita Martinez). Cara Black could honestly come back to the doubles tour today and compete for titles again.

by Anonymous | reply 464 | July 7, 2022 8:33 PM |
An abdomen tear for a tennis player is a non starter going forward in just about every single instance. The core is involved in every single shot. Mostly the serve. I think Rafa still plays if the injury couldn't get worse. But it 100% can get worse. Much worse. (Yeah, I know Novak did in the Aussie a couple years back. But that was in insanely big risk.)
So to break it down:
He probably couldn't win with it.
And it could hurt his career going forward.
And he only has a year or so left in that career as is. He wants to be able to play the USO and the slams next year.
It's the absolute worst for him. I'm crushed. But he's doing the right thing.

I was hoping Halep could keep it together and win this tournament. I like Ons a lot and would be happy to see her win it, but if past is prologue, it seems quite likely that she’s going to choke.
This is setting up to be the least compelling ladies final since Dementieva / Myskina. It’s boring to have a “big two” or “big four” or whatever, but I think it’s even crappier to have a bunch of one-slam-wonders like Ostapenko and Raducanu and Krejickova. I know lots of folks here have moaned and groaned about Serena being GOAT for so many years, but it’s actually kind of nice to have a couple reliable champions who can sometimes lose in a surprising upset.
by Anonymous | reply 488 | July 8, 2022 3:50 AM |
The Dementieva/Myskina final only happened because Capriati showed up flat against Myskina who she had never lost to in the semifinal. She had just straight setted Serena in the quarters and had a huge letdown after a good convincing win. She became the favorite running away and had another Capriati moment/meltdown. Pam Shriver had her all but accepting the trophy then and there.
by Anonymous | reply 489 | July 8, 2022 3:59 AM |
My favorite recent era in the ladies game was when Justine Henin was in top form and consistently giving Serena a run for her money. You also had a very athletic Clijsters who could go deep and even win slams, as well as Azarenka who could hang with them when she was fit.
Since then, the only women who’ve made me excited to tune in were Kerber when she had like a year and a half run of winning everything, and then Barty. If Barty hadn’t retired prematurely, we’d probably currently be able to enjoy a compelling rivalry between her and Swiatek that would be akin to graf/seles.
by Anonymous | reply 490 | July 8, 2022 4:05 AM |
Not one of Justine and Serena's matches were as great as the Serena-Capriati matches. I don't think their matches were ever all that dramatic and well played. Even the one when Justine cheated. Capriati-Serena have at least 4 or 5 classic matches. I think they played 17 times and were 10-7. All but two went 3 sets and most were deep into the 3rd. Not many players at that point had that many wins against Serena.

Nick Kyrgios is a brilliant tennis player who appears to be focused for maybe the first time ever in this tournament. The level of his antics against Tsissypants this time around were no worse than the gamesmanship typical of Tsissy himself, or the decades of nonsense by Nadal for that matter. Hoping Kyrgios doesn't melt down and gives it his all in the Final--win or lose it's gonna be excellent tennis entertainment if Nick stays cool and keeps his focus on the tennis. I'm with R477--Kyrgios and Djoker are potentially a great matchup and I'll be happy to see either one take it.
by Anonymous | reply 496 | July 8, 2022 7:18 AM |
Kyrgios could have likely beaten Nadal even if he were healthy as he did it 8 years ago right at Wimbledon. He had his chances in their Indian Wells match this year too but mentally imploded
there's just no defending the men's game right now that 2 guys in their mid 30s physically outlast everyone (provided they're not injured) and are more consistent. The guys in their mid to late 20s right now are just pathetic with their inability to win slams. You can admire the level of skill and stamina that Nadal and Djokovic have which I do but the rest of the top men (except for teenagers and early 20s guys) are an absolute joke.
Just this year alone, Nadal almost lost about 6-7 times but the opponents found ways to choke and come up lame (and then there was Zverev's freak injury). So we have Nadal not in dominant form but still dominating the tour. That's how bad things are
Now maybe if Berrettini hadn't tested positive for covid this tournament could have been different but we'll never know
by Anonymous | reply 497 | July 8, 2022 7:30 AM |
Djokovic vs. Kyrgios in the final? My two faves? Count me in! But no, remember, these two are the most unsavory characters on the tour: count me the fuck out!
Geez it's the worst best thing that has actually ever happened to me. I feel like flying in a chaos of utter cognitive dissonance. How could this not have happened back in the early 2010s, when my relationship to these players were not as complicated as they are today?
by Anonymous | reply 498 | July 8, 2022 7:47 AM |
Berettini getting COVID was the killer.

Djokovic is deeply unpleasant to watch in comparison to Nadal and Federer, who both play under the same pressure without blowing their tops. Kyygios is a bampot, as we say in Scotland.

My only hope now is Kuntios goes on a drug-fueled bender on his extra day off, shag a rough old skank, and catches monkeypox.
I actually think there's a 40% chance of this happening.
by Anonymous | reply 501 | July 8, 2022 8:43 AM |
Kyrgios would be the most disgusting GS winner ever. Even Zverev would be a better winner than him.

R497 Don't make me laugh. They played several times at GS after that match and Nadal always won
I doubt Kyrgios will be able to give a fight against Novak because he is amazingly good at destroying himself
by Anonymous | reply 505 | July 8, 2022 10:40 AM |
And i think the Krejcikova- Palyuchenkova final was way less interesting than this one. At least Ons is a top player and Rybakina was hyped to be a to too. And of course there's a clear contrast in their styles

Seven-time champion Serena Williams snubbed the Centre Court centenary celebrations after Wimbledon officials allegedly refused to let her keep her five courtesy cars for the whole tournament.
Williams is understood to have asked for the use of five vehicles, for herself, her husband, her sister, and mother and her coach. While ordinary players are allocated a single car, some top players are granted an additional vehicle for their coach, although Federer is among the very few believed to have the use of five cars at the championships when he is competing.
A Wimbledon source said Serena was disappointed when Wimbledon rejected her request to extend the use of the cars past the normal limit of 24 hours after a player is knocked out.
“She wanted to use the cars for the whole two weeks because that’s what happens at the other grand slams. She was told that was not possible because they had to be used by the other players.

I love me some Serena, but that is ridiculous behavior described by r511, especially considering how much money she has.

"Wimbledon organisers have asked players to rein in maxing out their food allowances, it has been reported.
Those playing in this year’s championships, including tennis legends Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, are given a £90 ($108) daily food allowance at the All England Tennis Club’s (AELTC) restaurants.
Coaches are given around half that amount, to spend on food and drink using accreditation tags that can be scanned.
Players can use their daily budgets at six places, including two restaurants, two sandwich bars and two coffee shops.
But there have been reports that some are maxing out their daily allowances, leading to concern that Wimbledon could run short of supplies, according to the Guardian.
The publication reported that one coach bought 27 probiotic yoghurt drinks in a bid to spend their full daily allowance, prompting the AELTC to email players and politely ask them to rein it in.
The email is believed to have asked competitors to be more “judicious” when spending their allowances.
This is thought to be in a bid to prevent potential food shortages as opposed to saving money, as meals have already been accounted for in event budgets."
by Anonymous | reply 514 | July 8, 2022 1:36 PM |
yes, I read about that a few days ago, someone took like 27 yogurts! it was a coach but didn't name the person. probably halep's coach. can't stand him

At the US open, a Honey Deuce (official drink) is $20, you get to keep the plastic cup. But that was last year's price. Probably gonna be more expensive this year. everything is.

There's nothing remotely entetaining about Kyrgios and his trashy behavior.

by Anonymous | reply 527 | July 8, 2022 3:04 PM |
Rybikna doesn't grunt or constantly scream and fist pump after every point...she's so calm and composed and even when she beat Halep there was no major victory dance like you see from so many others. If she can stay this emotionally relaxed in the final she will win. Ons can crumble fast once she feels pressure.

by Anonymous | reply 572 | July 8, 2022 5:08 PM |
Novak started so tight, reminded me of last year's US Open. Medvedev, of course, so much tougher than Norrie.
I think back on Boris Becker, Novak's former coach, who late in his career used to drop the first set almost as a matter of form. Just took him some time to get into a match.
Norrie played so well in the first set, but then the errors crept in and Novak got his mind into it. During the on-court interview, I felt Novak's mind drifting a bit--he wasn't looking at the interviewer at all. I think tennis is very, very mental for him, perhaps more than other players.
That will give Nick an advantage, I think. Nick is the "disrupter" as the ESPN guys put it, and that sounds right. Novak has never won a set off of him and Nick has gotten into his head with his criticism of Novak. (Total cunt, that Nick.) I think Nick has a serious shot. And it would be interesting in Wimbledon history to see it happen, reminds me of other interesting one-off champions like Ivanisevic or Krajicek. (Though those guys were both much more consistently at the top of the men's game.)
