Woodland isn't a lovely town, it's okay, but almost completely uninteresting. And yes, it's a Sacramento bedroom community but not really a suburb, it's about not far from the borders of Sacramento, it's a town surrounded by hundreds of miles of farmland, and you can stand on the edge of town and have one foot in the country and one in the town. Real estate prices have been rocketing there during the last two years, as hordes of Bay Area residents got the okay to work from home, and flooded out into the land of cheaper real estate, and homelessness in the Sacramento area has grown tenfold as low-income housing gets turned into high-income housing, and some of that is happening in Woodland and putting terror into the hearts of people who can't afford huge rent increases.

Woodland is a mixed community politically but with more conservatism than Davis to the south (where I am), and the farmers between and around the towns are Faux-news-addled arch-conservatives. That's probably where the Proud Boy types come from, they grew up spending their Saturday nights going into towns and beating up some queers, or hearing their dads talk about the good old days when beating up queers was considered harmless boyish fun. They DO want to bring back those good old days.

It's hilarious to me when you hear conservatives bash California or New York as "liberal shitholes." I'm from the Northeast and it's not that ultra-liberal, there's plenty of conservatives and Trump supporters. New Jersey is a swing state just like California is. New York also would also be Republican if not for New York City. Even in NYC, it's not hard to find Republican supporters.

I think the right wing has told white people they are oppressed. They’ve been replaced and forgotten in favor of minorities and that’s why they’re so angry. The advancement of minorities feels like inequality to them whether it’s gay or black or female.

That’s why I say this is an American issue and it goes all the way back to the Reconstruction era of the late 1800’s. Working class / lower class white people were upset freed slaves were going to be “taking their jobs”, that’s why black people were banned from living and working in Oregon until the 1920’s. You can see it in Jim Crow, white flight, it’s historically embedded in white American culture and it’s evolved into what we see today.

I think Europe is different. Sure there’s issues with immigration but Europeans have been in their countries for a thousand years lol. America is different, it was white “settlers” who fought to keep other races / ethnicities out. When you look at the history of America and the Asians, the Mexicans / Spaniards, the Natives, the Africans - its all a full circle of the attitudes you see in white people today.
