He's always struck me as demonic in every single role, even when he's trying to play a "good guy" (as in Cuckoo's Nest, Five Easy Pieces, etc). The film starts off with him as a violent, vaguely demonic creep, and ends with him as a literal demon-possessed axe murderer. So his character development consists of him starting off at 10 and cranking it up to 11, a very unsatisfying progression.
