Too dark

My dad had to take me to see this when I was 8, and he did not enjoy it. I was psyched, although I can't remember anything else about it.

by Anonymousreply 3June 29, 2022 7:40 PM

I enjoyed it. I got the game as well.

There are four good things about this movie- John Huston's narration, Elmer Bernstein's music, Nigel Hawthorne, and John Hurt as the Horned King

I just re-watched this on Disney +. I loved it. It's too dark for the kiddies but young adults and teens, adults would probably enjoy it.

by Anonymousreply 6June 29, 2022 7:47 PM

R6 Agreed! Like the Hunchback of Notre Dame (my favorite)!

by Anonymousreply 7June 29, 2022 7:48 PM

Sooooo slow and boring

by Anonymousreply 8June 29, 2022 7:51 PM

R8 I don't think it is either. I think you have to have patience.

I finally watched this on Disney+ after many years of hearing about it.

Sooooo bad of a movie! It’s animated like a bad Saturday morning cartoon, and all the voices are really hammy. I was expecting much darker and well-produced.

R10 please explain

by Anonymousreply 11June 29, 2022 9:12 PM

Snooze fest.... meh. :-/

by Anonymousreply 12June 29, 2022 9:26 PM

Never saw the movie but I had the game as well. I remember it taking HOURS to get through that fucking rock maze on the way to the castle.

by Anonymousreply 13June 29, 2022 9:45 PM

What an assault that movie was in the theater. The sound was so fucking loud, the animation of the characters so amateurish and for no reason it becomes very violent(like Scooby Doo suddenly becoming gory) and then it refused to end. I watched a documentary about it on youtube and the parts they showed from the film were as bad as I remembered.

people that condemn this film as too scary for children... tend to breed tyrants of polarized extremes

Still very much D!sneyfied in terms of violence and peril and Themes(TM), compared to say a Bluth or a Bakshi film.

IMO Bluth’s SECRET OF NIMH and Bakshi’s WIZARDS are pretty radical and extremely dark, probably unsuitable for anyone younger than 13/14. I’d say the same for the animated films FELIDAE and THE PLAGUE DOGS. All make TBC look like an episode of GUMMI BEARS.

^^forgot to add FRITZ THE CAT. The number of clueless parents back in the day who let their young kids watch this...

R17 Nimh , All Dogs Go to Heaven, and An American Tail are on my list! I know about Bluth and his team. They look great!

They did a terrible job adapting the book, squeezing too many elements from the four other books in the series.

by Anonymousreply 20June 30, 2022 1:18 AM

R20 Yeah they wanted too much in too little.

by Anonymousreply 21June 30, 2022 1:52 AM

I remember I actually liked this movie as a kid. Since this thing reminded me of a dog we had at the time.

R22 have you watched it recently?

by Anonymousreply 23June 30, 2022 3:22 PM

It is a fun movie

by Anonymousreply 24March 4, 2023 5:26 PM

Oh it’s a cartoon? Pass. Don’t watch cartoons.

by Anonymousreply 25March 4, 2023 5:45 PM

R25 has spoken!

by Anonymousreply 26March 5, 2023 8:36 PM

r23 Massively late response. But no I was probably about 10 last time I saw it.

by Anonymousreply 27March 5, 2023 8:43 PM

Munchies and crunchies for Gurgi!

I was a fan of the books, and as far as I remember, I didn't hate the movie....but my standards may not have been the highest, since I was a kid who also liked all the crappy Saturday morning cartoons.
