His new Atlanta estate is outlandishly over the top. He has his own jetport on the property. I've heard of wanting to have your house as far off the street as possible, but one has to use Google Maps to navigate that driveway.

He wants his own massive estate, just like his bestie Oprah. However, her house is in Montecito, which can support a $100 million property. Tyler building a $100 million house in Atlanta is a horrible investment and he'll never be able to sell it for anywhere near that.

No one said they were blockbusters in the Tom Cruise/Leonardo DiCaprio summer movie sense. But look at the budget of those films and how much they grossed. Those films made back double, sometimes triple, the budget.

Anyway, Tyler Perry could surely fly me right out to that estate to fuck me and pay my bills lol. Yeah it may seem like Madea on top of you at first but he's a tall and relatively attractive man, I could deal with it!
And TP practically has monopoly on black scripted dramas...it takes those shows forever to formulate on network TV. He has corned that market totally.

I'm from Atlanta and am a huge Madea fan. I think Tyler Perry did a great job of capturing the strong woman based black culture so prevalent there. I never get tired of watching those movies. He's very talented and has been rewarded justly
by Anonymous | reply 58 | June 30, 2022 8:43 AM |
His audience is black women especially religious older ones. His stuff is formulaic and stereotypical but it sells. It's no different than cheesy Hallmark, Lifetime or Christian movies. His stuff does have hot guys in it. I used to watch House of Payne for Lance Gross and Allen Payne. While he's no Spike Lee or Denzel Washington. I don't find his stuff as offensive as Lee Daniels or cringey like Kenya Barris. Tyler makes corny movies and shows for a black audience. I hate that talented actresses like Phylicia Rashad and Kimberly Elise waste their talent on his stuff but they gotta eat.

His audience and content have expanded hugely. my coworker does not watch his work but said her kids love watching Madea movies. Its relatively innocent and fun for kids to watch.
Also most of his content outside of Madea movies he does not write or direct anymore, his studios just produce tons of shows. Who else is going to turn out hours of programming for BET and OWN? BET is totally different than it was 20 years ago and he fills the void left since people do not watch music videos on TV anymore.

[quote] I don't get the hate for Tyler.
I can explain it. That hate mainly comes from online venues like DL that are populated mainly by white gay males, and face it, our ranks are infested with some of the most bigoted, hate filled people on earth. That hatred is made up of the facts that he's a black man who has made millions in the entertainment industry, spends his money like crazy, mainly to help black people, the assumption, right or wrong, who knows since no one here really knows a damn thing about the man's personal life other than what they hear and repeat in exaggeration from the gay rumor mill, that he is a closeted homo, and the fact that he lives and works in Atlanta. The LA & NYC queens have a burning hatred for Atlanta or anyone who lives there as they see Atlanta as a detriment to their city's dominance in the movie/TV industry.
To pile all that hatred into one all-encompassing reason, they hate him because he's not spending one dime of his money on them. Of course that would all change very fast if Perry hired any of them in high paying jobs.

I've watched a couple of the Madea movies and it's all harmless brain candy and before his movies turn preachy, some of it's funny. With his TV work he's basically the black Aaron Spelling. Tyler knows his audience and he gives them what they want, just like Aaron Spelling before him. It's all over the top soap opera stuff. With Aaron Spelling is was blonde women with nice tits. With Tyler it's hot guys with nice tits.
As for his house, the man has paid his dues and has made a shit ton of cash and he designed the house that someone who grew up poor thinks is the epitome of sophistication and class. I have no problem with that. It's the way that some DLers seem to think that wealthy people are all like the wealthy characters from 1940s classic movies.

Hmmmm?
by Anonymous | reply 78 | June 30, 2022 1:58 PM |
I've never gotten the impression that Tyler was angry about anything. The man doesn't really show much of himself in interviews or anywhere else. Yeah, he's gay, but he's made the choice not to the discuss it. I compare him to a southern black church choir director. If you are familiar with this, you would notice a pattern in a lot of southern black churches that the choir director is often a man and gay and sometimes flaming. However, no one acknowledges it, no one talks about it - publicly, and everyone knows and it's fine as long as it goes unsaid.
Now, I'm basically an atheist and haven't been to church, especially a southern black church, in decades, but I doubt that it's changed all that much.

by Anonymous | reply 108 | July 1, 2022 6:35 PM |
Tyler's style always worked better on stage than film because essentially his stuff is vaudeville, and he hasn't found a way to translate that to film. Plus, he's great at improvisational comedy which feeds off audience's reaction.
His films lack the theatricality of his plays, even though they do have their funny moments.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | July 1, 2022 8:21 PM |
It's not vaudeville it chitlin' circuit theatre. That's what I love about it. People think the Chitlin circuit died out in the 60s and 70s but in the 80s in Brooklyn there was a tabernacle were I saw musical/gospel/drama productions that were just perfect. He comes out of that. There is a recording of Medea Christmas that is the staged version, which was made before it was refilmed as a "movie". It's great.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | July 1, 2022 9:00 PM |
When I've tried to watch his movies, the predictable set-ups and jokes are what lose me. Now that it's been mentioned, this could work better on stage, simply because you need energy put over predictable material.

Plus singing and a participatory audience, a black church/theatre audience.
I take the contrarian view and thing he does deliver some of this in his tv and movies and that is why he has been a success. At least the black audience recognizes it and likes it. And a few whites, with Madea. I'm white. None of my white friends have any tolerance for Tyler Perry productions.

I said this above, did any of you, who are old enough, watch Aaron Spelling shows because they were high quality and well written? It was just fun, mindless entertainment. That is what Tyler is doing. I've only watched 3 of his movies and they were all terrible, but there were funny moments in them and I understand why they're so popular with his audience. He knows that audience. Don't go to a Tyler Perry movie looking for high art, that's not what he's serving.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | July 1, 2022 9:45 PM |
In TP's defense a lot views here are a bit dated, Tyler Perry's movies are like 1/10th of the overall content he is behind these days. And he doesn't even direct most of the stuff that carries his brand anymore. I just watched a Kim Fields interview, she actually directed one of his family friendly sitcoms for many years and even that was 10 years ago.
r113 his production studios in Georgia are massive, Im sure other productions take place there that he has nothing to do with; except collecting checks from the other production companies leasing the space. He is likely invested in a ton of other ventures as well.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | July 1, 2022 9:53 PM |
His new studio is a former Army base decommissioned back during the great purge of bases years ago. Fort MacPherson is basically it's own town. It has almost everything a movie studio would have to build except it's all real, not typical cheap movie studio fakery made of plywood. There is an entire neighborhood on the base that is nothing but big old beautiful brick homes built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as housing for the top military commanders and their families. You see those homes in Tyler's movies a lot.

R116: The Aaron Spelling shows were awful. He set-up his template with "Burke's Law" in the 1960s, which was entertaining and novel for its time and proceeded to run the formula into the ground which each successive new show, Just because they were popular (actually Burke's Law was not Top 20 or 30), didn't make them any better. Ditto Perry's formulaic drek.

The house and surrounding gardens are very... symmetrical. Zzzzzz.
Despite that, it's very creepy that there is drone footage of his property. "Atlanta Drone Girl" or whomever better watch out. If I were Tyler Perry I would not be impressed.

^ Unless he authorized it. What good is having a house like that if no one sees it?
by Anonymous | reply 121 | July 2, 2022 2:15 PM |
How many cars will he be able to park in that underground parking level? DAMN!
I don't see a pool. I wonder if the pool is enclosed in that underground bunker.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | July 2, 2022 2:17 PM |
^There's a dark rectangle in the back which is probably the covered pool

All the retaining walls are so severe. I expected they would have been covered with stone or brick, but no.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | July 2, 2022 2:35 PM |
@r120, Symmetrical balance is used in formal landscapes when one side of the landscape is a mirror image of the opposite side. These landscapes often use geometric patterns in the walkways, planting beds and even how the plants are pruned into shapes.

by Anonymous | reply 128 | July 2, 2022 5:29 PM |
Who cares? He made it the good old-fashioned way, churning out mediocre entertainment material for mediocre American minds.
If his tastes reflect that, blame the mediocrity of the country that produced him.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | July 2, 2022 5:33 PM |
^ There's nothing wrong with what he churns out if all you want to do is laugh and be entertained. If you want to do more heavy lifting read a book

I have a feeling that homophobic, black actors must hate him.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | July 2, 2022 6:20 PM |
Those homophobic black actors would willingly spread their ass cheeks to Perry if the paycheck is right.

The design of the landscaping is large scale and airy. I kind of like how spartan it all is - this is not cozy and romantic at all. At least it's a French design with room to breath and not squeezed into a small lot in some rich neighborhood.

It's grotesque.

Don't be stupid. TP probably employs a full time in house pizza maker.

This is not a house built just for someone to live in. This is a house, and property, built for grand functions, and to be used for location filming. TP will likely get millions a year in tax write offs on this property.

I don't like Perry, but it's funny how--on DL--he "Has Way Too Damn Much Money!" when the same level of criticism isn't launched against his white counterparts.
Actually, it's not funny. It's just par-for-course when it comes to the ingrate trolls who have infiltrated this site.

I will forever love him in his Madea character for this clip alone. I had a sister who was abused by her ex-husband. And also for all the other laughs. And I am a white old gay man..Thanks Tyler.

The Daily Mail this morning or yesterday just ran something like 50 photos from a wedding in the Cotswolds held by the Murdoch family for Rupert Murdoch's granddaughter. The Murdoch bazillions make Tyler Perry look like the Poor Little Match Girl . . . But if you wanna see nouveau riche, the tackiness and trashiness of the family on display in those photos make Tyler Perry look like a Social Register blueblood. The 20 pages of DM comments are a classic. And let's not forget all the people Tyler Perry has made laugh, versus all the people Rupert Murdoch has made cry.

Look, I started this thread & have commented favorably about TP all through the thread, and the title was not a criticism of him at all. I happen to admire him greatly and all he has achieved. It was simply a funny aside about how rich TP has become. But I forget at times how touchy some of you strange creatures who live your lives looking for something, anything, to be offended about. So F&F & block me, I don't give a fat rat's ass Toots.

He deserves it though. He really did build his empire. A lot of it is schlock, but he gave a lot of people what they wanted and if they're willing to pay for it, more power to him. I didn't know he had another estate after he sold the old tacky place.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | July 3, 2022 6:33 PM |
I don't find anything tacky about his former Buckhead home. Ostentatious and grandiose maybe, but tacky it is not.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | July 3, 2022 6:40 PM |

Cultural appropriation.

by Anonymous | reply 165 | July 3, 2022 6:55 PM |
That place is ostentatious, nobody needs such a thing. That said, Perry is said to treat his staff well, so he might have terrible taste but at least he apparently doesn't behave like an asshole towards the people working for him.
I hate people who treat staff, their staff respectively, like shit.
by Anonymous | reply 166 | July 3, 2022 6:59 PM |
The rear elevation was kind of tacky but not obscenely so.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | July 3, 2022 7:50 PM |
Watching HBO's The Guilded Age and studying what happened to all those grand mansions pointed out how wasteful it all was. They would spend millions to build a palace, and then it would be torn down just a few decades later ... or worse, it would change hands multiple times and slip into a state of steady decay as it declined in value, eventually being abandoned to become a target for legend trippers and vandals.
That's my prediction for this place. That winding driveway alone is just ridiculous.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | July 3, 2022 8:47 PM |
R169 - many many gilded age mansions survive to this day and many are not in horrible disrepair. The ones in cities tended to disappear. Elsewhere, not.
