I'm from Atlanta and am a huge Madea fan. I think Tyler Perry did a great job of capturing the strong woman based black culture so prevalent there. I never get tired of watching those movies. He's very talented and has been rewarded justly

His stuff does have hot guys in it. I used to watch House of Payne for Lance Gross and Allen Payne. While he's no Spike Lee or Denzel Washington. I don't find his stuff as offensive as Lee Daniels or cringey like Kenya Barris. Tyler makes corny movies and shows for a black audience. His audience and content have expanded hugely. my coworker does not watch his work but said her kids love watching Madea movies. Its relatively innocent and fun for kids to watch.

Also most of his content outside of Madea movies he does not write or direct anymore, his studios just produce tons of shows. Who else is going to turn out hours of programming for BET and OWN? I've watched a couple of the Madea movies and it's all harmless brain candy and before his movies turn preachy, some of it's funny. With his TV work he's basically the black Aaron Spelling. I've never gotten the impression that Tyler was angry about anything. The man doesn't really show much of himself in interviews or anywhere else. Yeah, he's gay, but he's made the choice not to the discuss it. I compare him to a southern black church choir director. If you are familiar with this, you would notice a pattern in a lot of southern black churches that the choir director is often a man and gay and sometimes flaming. However, no one acknowledges it, no one talks about it - publicly, and everyone knows and it's fine as long as it goes unsaid.

That was a classic scene, R103, but I've always preferred Tyler's plays to his movies.

Tyler's style always worked better on stage than film because essentially his stuff is vaudeville, and he hasn't found a way to translate that to film. Plus, he's great at improvisational comedy which feeds off audience's reaction.

His films lack the theatricality of his plays, even though they do have their funny moments.

It's not vaudeville it chitlin' circuit theatre. That's what I love about it. People think the Chitlin circuit died out in the 60s and 70s but in the 80s in Brooklyn there was a tabernacle were I saw musical/gospel/drama productions that were just perfect. He comes out of that. There is a recording of Medea Christmas that is the staged version, which was made before it was refilmed as a "movie". It's great.

When I've tried to watch his movies, the predictable set-ups and jokes are what lose me. Now that it's been mentioned, this could work better on stage, simply because you need energy put over predictable material.

Plus singing and a participatory audience, a black church/theatre audience.

I take the contrarian view and thing he does deliver some of this in his tv and movies and that is why he has been a success. At least the black audience recognizes it and likes it. And a few whites, with Madea. I'm white. None of my white friends have any tolerance for Tyler Perry productions.

I said this above, did any of you, who are old enough, watch Aaron Spelling shows because they were high quality and well written? It was just fun, mindless entertainment. That is what Tyler is doing. I've only watched 3 of his movies and they were all terrible, but there were funny moments in them and I understand why they're so popular with his audience. He knows that audience. Don't go to a Tyler Perry movie looking for high art, that's not what he's serving.

In TP's defense a lot views here are a bit dated, Tyler Perry's movies are like 1/10th of the overall content he is behind these days. And he doesn't even direct most of the stuff that carries his brand anymore. I just watched a Kim Fields interview, she actually directed one of his family friendly sitcoms for many years and even that was 10 years ago.

r113 his production studios in Georgia are massive, Im sure other productions take place there that he has nothing to do with; except collecting checks from the other production companies leasing the space. He is likely invested in a ton of other ventures as well.

His new studio is a former Army base decommissioned back during the great purge of bases years ago. Fort MacPherson is basically it's own town. It has almost everything a movie studio would have to build except it's all real, not typical cheap movie studio fakery made of plywood. There is an entire neighborhood on the base that is nothing but big old beautiful brick homes built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as housing for the top military commanders and their families. You see those homes in Tyler's movies a lot.

R116: The Aaron Spelling shows were awful. He set-up his template with "Burke's Law" in the 1960s, which was entertaining and novel for its time and proceeded to run the formula into the ground which each successive new show, Just because they were popular (actually Burke's Law was not Top 20 or 30), didn't make them any better. Ditto Perry's formulaic drek.

The house and surrounding gardens are very... symmetrical. Zzzzzz.

Despite that, it's very creepy that there is drone footage of his property. "Atlanta Drone Girl" or whomever better watch out. If I were Tyler Perry I would not be impressed.

Watching HBO's The Guilded Age and studying what happened to all those grand mansions pointed out how wasteful it all was. They would spend millions to build a palace, and then it would be torn down just a few decades later ... or worse, it would change hands multiple times and slip into a state of steady decay as it declined in value, eventually being abandoned to become a target for legend trippers and vandals.

That's my prediction for this place. That winding driveway alone is just ridiculous.
