Restaurant Ice
Every now and then, I go to a restaurant that has ice that's comprised of "tiny" little bits of ice, and is almost halfway in consistency between "ice cube" and "Icee". Is there an actual name for that "kind" of ice, or some specific brand of commercial icemaker that makes it?
More importantly... does anybody make a home version? I absolutely HATE the awful crescent-shaped ice from normal refrigerators (among other things, it's impossible to drink from a cup containing it, because one of them inevitably aligns with the side of the cup and your mouth & forms an ice dam), and I'd LOVE to have "restaurant-type" ice at home.
I'm not sure, but I think one of the traits of the icemakers I'm talking about is that inside, they continuously pump cold water over a refrigerated plate (collecting the water that's still liquid at the bottom & sending it back up for another trip down the ice plate).

It might surprise you to know that people in ancient times, before refrigeration, knew how to make ice.
And there were bitches who complained about the texture even then, I'll bet 50 denarii.

I hate the insistence that so many places have on automatically adding ice to soda. It's absurd. Soda is cold already if it comes from the soda machine. It just waters it down.

reconstituted, or "SONIC" ice.......is what you are referring to...........the machines for home use are about $4000.00.................

It’s called pellet ice and the reason it’s different is because it is small prices of ice that have been compressed, leaving little air pockets in the ice. The machines that make it are more expensive. It’s really good for keeping things cold and is used a lot by fish markets.

You’re thinking of flake ice. It’s different than pellet or nugget ice.

I love chipped, crushed, flaked, shaved, pellet & pebble ice, OP! Especially with my seltzer or with ginger beer. It's so refreshing. Though if I'm using my Yeti (typically at work, or in the garden), I prefer the cubes because they last longer.

I'm always surprised that there are adults who still drink soda. That shit is just sugar in a can.

Yes, r25, really. And I'd drink my beverage (chilled with "the good ice") from a CFC-enriched styrofoam cup with a plastic straw, then pay to mail both to Asia so they can be disposed of in the ocean, just to piss off self-righteous virtue-signaling zealots like you. ;-D

r23 Just what do you drink? Having a soda is not going to kill you, you probably weigh 300lbs anyway.

r28 I drink water or iced tea.

[R23] - I’m always surprised adults actually drink alcoholic beverages. Most are basically all carbs and sugar.

I agree, r30. I rarely have alcohol and when I do, I usually have a glass of wine, maybe 2 if I feel like it. I think I drink alcohol about once every two or three months. Never understood the folks who need it every single day. SO bad for you.

R31, everything is bad for you. Unless you want to live like a monk.

You don't have to tell me that, r33. I had cancer so now I'm super careful about what I put into my body.

R33 Spot on, and even a monk's lifestyle is deleterious to prostate health.

If you can’t get the good ice, ordinary ice is fine.
