I have been watching a lot of old movies over the past year, using the recommendations of DLers. I really loved Witness for the Prosecution and I am enjoying Laughton's performance in Advise and Consent. He is so funny! What was he like?
Eldergays, tell us about Charles Laughton

I’ve always wondered why his and Elsa Lanchester’s kids haven’t penned scandalous tell-alls by this point.

The multiple source gossip about him - that he like shit eating - always come to mind when I see him or his name mentioned.

He popularized a sandwich spread of some kind as I recall.

He directed one of the best films ever made as his debut and never directed another again because of the initial bad reception his film got.

I’m not an eldergay, but I loved him in the old ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’. I was going through some horrible shit and that movie really gave me enjoyment through it.

R10 Great movie, so much better than the Brando version. The story of Clark Gable’s mild homophobia on that set is so ridiculous it’s funny. He was pissed off that Laughton had brought along his boyfriend and they were canoodling all throughout the grueling production. Meanwhile Laughton was very insecure about being fat and femme seeming around a he-man like Gable.

He's also wonderful in the comedy "Ruggles of Red Gap," which he made the same year he played Captain Bligh in "Mutiny." He won the New York Film Critics' Award for both performances.

He loved to smear clumps of his own shit all over his face and neck while masturbating.

Can you all provide some citations about his shit fetish? It's really hard to believe.

He made some great forgotten melodramas like "Payment Deferred" and "The Suspect", and was very good in one of several movie versions of "They Knew what they Wanted" which became the musical "The Most Happy Fella". Another great late movie of his is "Witness For the Prosecution", one of the greatest courtroom dramas ever made.

His NIGHT OF THE HUNTER is a damn great film. A shame it was his only directorial effort, as it is unlike any other.
