Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Says He’s “Renouncing” His Citizenship, Moving To UK
Billie Joe Armstrong don’t want to be an American idiot.
The Grammy-winning Green Day singer/songwriter slammed the US during a Friday night concert in London, and vowed he was moving to the UK. He proclaimed “F**k America,” adding that he was “renouncing” his citizenship in the wake of the Supreme Cout overturning Roe v. Wade’s federal abortion protections.
Armstrong, 50, told his audience “There’s too much f***ing stupid in the world to go back to that miseable f**king excuse for a country” when he made his reveal..
He added: “Oh, I’m not kidding, you’re going to get a lot of me in the coming days.”
It’s not the first anti-US sentiments from Armstrong, whose “American Idiot” takes shots at life in the US. He has repeatedly made political statements during his concerts and in interviews.

There's currently a lengthy thread detailing where DLers would want to move from the US in light of Roe. The feeling of disgust in our country right now is widespread.
Why should a rock star feel any different? He just has the means to do it and most of us don't.

Just curious: With all the troubles, (and The Troubles) in the UK, has anyone ever heard a British rock star go off about "Fuck the UK! Piece of shit country populated by cunts! I'm moving to [the US, France, wherever]!!"
I know plenty of UK rock stars have criticized their country. And I know most of them have residences outside the UK for tax purposes. But do they make a habit of raging against their country? I remember seeing Billy Bragg live. He had lots to say about the injustices of US wars, but he didn't comment on anything the UK was doing.
I wonder if Armstrong will announce he's "moving to [this country]!" in every country he tours.

Overly dramatic to be sure, but he's absolutely correct. The U.S. has gone rotten to the core and yet grows worse still; and there's no reason for anyone to stick around and "fight" if they have other choices.
Maybe he's histrionic, maybe he's inarticulate in his point, maybe he's an asshole, a pretend bisexual, a bad tipper, or doesn't treat his dog well.
It's mock noble to pretend that he should stay and fight when people more knowledgeable, more articulate, more seasoned in communications or politics have been undone and proved ineffective despite superior position and passion.
This coward as you would say is cushioned by money enough to live well more or less wherever he might want to live. I don't blame him in the least for exercising his options and putting the U.S. an ocean away.

For those wondering why the pushback, are you very young? Some of us elders remember countless celebrities saying they would move out of the US and renounce their citizenship if: GHW Bush won; "W" won; "W" won re-election; Trump won; etc.
I can't recall any specific claims, but it wouldn't surprise me if people were proclaiming the same thing when Reagan was running the first and second times.
As far as I know, all of these terribly traumatized multimillionaires are still here in the US. So I call bullshit, and I call tantrum.
It would impress me a LOT more if someone with tremendous wealth and influence left the country and renounced their citizenship, and THEN explained that they'd done it because of Roe, or Trump, or W, or whatever.
(As a side question, since most of these celebrities deplore colonialism, whiteness, and the hideous racism it brings, why aren't they moving to nonwhite countries? Why do they always want to move to Europe, birthplace of colonialism and whiteness? After all, the infant US learned most of its worst tendencies at the knee of Mother England.)

The Troubles are not a good comparison to what's happening in the US right now. Arguably a better parallel is to 1930s Germany since it restricted civil rights to an unprecedented degree. Many Germans got the fuck out in the 30s when they saw which way the wind was blowing.

Meh. You don't always have to fight especially battles you can't win in your lifetime. In the early 90s I was a young man and I was absolutely fried and destroyed by AIDS killing some of my friends and even two lovers. It was NYC and some people suffered horribly extra because there was no social safety net and no universal access to humane dignified health care. NYC was already becoming one of the global cities designed to serve the very rich. Capitalism was running amok. Well I have three passports so I got the fuck out of dodge. I love USA but there are battles I can't win. There are people who hate the poor and the sick and minorities and gay folks, too. For one of the richest countries in the world, a lot of people are getting shafted, since mid 80s, moving more and more wealth up the ladder, destroying nice lives that should be available for most, since the country and GDP is so large. Its simply not as dog eat dog in other rich countries. The American national government is severely broken, not productive and both parties seem content with the ever widening gap between rich and poor.

R79: It's not that difficult to relinquish or renounce one's U.S. citizenship (there's a slight difference, the first being the usual route for someone who moved to Portugal having started a life there with no intent to return to the U.S. or to continue citizenship.) First, you must have citizenship in another country in hand; they won't do it if it would render you country-less. There is an application with fees of about $2350 and an interview in a U.S. embassy or wherever you hold another citizenship and wish to make your home.
Then there is the settling up financially with U.S. tax obligations and wealth transfer if applicable. Up to a certain amount you need only prove that your last year of taxes on U.S. income are paid (and last five years of taxes reviewed), beyond that there is an exit tax which applies I think after the first $699,000 of capital gains from the U.S. It would be a one-time accounting worry for some, but would do away with the need to file a U.S. tax statement, whether or not you owe U.S. taxes, for the rest of your life.
Renunciation or relinquishment is permanent. They in theory can cause potential complications should you travel to the U.S. Social Security eligibiity is not affected.
It's not that complicated: Say "I'm out of here" in an embassy interview, settle up your taxes, pay any exit taxes of funds transferred out of the U.S. on your leaving, Thant's it. Of course people with tons of money, a Facebook founder, say, have a greater burden of evidence, but it's just once.

just like those bitches on The View complaining about Roe being overturned, yet they don't seem to know the fact that the Bahamas (where they're on location) doesn't allow abortions either

[quote]Americans are fed up and will be leaving just as their ancestors did.
Really, R102...just how do you suppose they'll do that? Just pack a bag and flounce into some other country, who will welcome them with open arms? Of course, being Americans, they camove anywhere in the world, without regard for immigration laws. or money. Delusional.

Americans are blissfully unaware that our current immigration policy is by far the most liberal and open in the world. Every other country on Earth has much stricter controls on who comes in, and who stays.
Americans think they can just waltz into any other country, fling their arms open, say, "I'm here!," and be accepted.

I know nothing of this person or their work and so I do not have any interest in his outcome. But, I do have a lot of friends in the UK and regret that they are to be burdened with someone of his ilk.

Americans are blissfully unaware because it's not true. The U.S. is in top 10 lists of countries by number of immigrants admitted, or refugees (another point(, but not by the ease and friendliness and openness to immigrants, R108.
I don't imagine you've ever petitioned the U.S. government for permanent residence status for a non-U.S. citizen spouse? Liberal and open are not words that come to mind in the process.

They don’t live in the Bahamas, you fucking idiot, nor are they planning to move there. Do you even think before posting?

Green Day punk? My ass. They really don't know what punk is. Shut up Billie Joe and go write another song about masturbation.

It's obvious that rich Americans and Australians always migrate to The UK because it's Anglophone and it has this image of being "high-class." It's funny how the fancy British stereotype has never evolved past the Victorian era in American eyes. The British I've met who worked in The US, seem just as boring and dim as Americans and they have just as bad fashion sense too..
I find it funny nobody thinks of Canada as an option at all. If you're an American, Canada is basically the same culturally and there's little variation of the accent except in the Francophone areas. Canada has a higher living standard. Plus Toronto and Vancouver are used a lot for filming American TV. I'm surprised minor American TV stars don't just live there especially Hallmark actors.

Canada is a frozen wasteland. Even the trash it produces like Justin Bieber refuses to go back.

I love Green Day's music.
I used to appreciate Billie Joe Armstrong and to a certain extant I still do.
But he's had some serious substance abuse issues and I think he's been losing his mind since his drunken tirade a few years ago.
I wouldn't be surprised if he had some mental health issues that he was struggling with.

I was flipping around various stations on the radio in my car today, and Green Day was on three times in the 20 minutes I was in the car.

R83 research has show there is more class mobility in now in UK than in the USA. USA is low among industrialized nations for class mobility.

I can "believe" he'd renounce citizenship.
And actually mean it — right now.
Especially after Jan. 6.
He can do it.
And if he does leave the USA in disgust.
Then why not announce it?
But I wish he'd say he was going somewhere more interesting, like, Mexico.
Or somewhere more respectable, like, Canada.
