Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Says He’s “Renouncing” His Citizenship, Moving To UK

Billie Joe Armstrong don’t want to be an American idiot.

The Grammy-winning Green Day singer/songwriter slammed the US during a Friday night concert in London, and vowed he was moving to the UK. He proclaimed “F**k America,” adding that he was “renouncing” his citizenship in the wake of the Supreme Cout overturning Roe v. Wade’s federal abortion protections.

Armstrong, 50, told his audience “There’s too much f***ing stupid in the world to go back to that miseable f**king excuse for a country” when he made his reveal..

He added: “Oh, I’m not kidding, you’re going to get a lot of me in the coming days.”

It’s not the first anti-US sentiments from Armstrong, whose “American Idiot” takes shots at life in the US. He has repeatedly made political statements during his concerts and in interviews.

fucking pussy.

by Anonymousreply 1June 26, 2022 7:10 PM

Oh he’s str8?

by Anonymousreply 2June 26, 2022 7:16 PM

Curious to see if he gets the same blowback that the Dixie Chicks got for much milder comments.

by Anonymousreply 3June 26, 2022 7:19 PM

A British politician got dragged for saying pro choice instead of anti abortion. That's an encouraging sign.

by Anonymousreply 4June 26, 2022 7:21 PM

Good boy. Don't stay and fight. Curse and cry like a baby. Throw a tantrum and take your vote to the enlightened paradise that is the UK.

by Anonymousreply 5June 26, 2022 7:22 PM

Gen X is responsible for doing away with abortion rights and he is one of the most successful Gen X singers

So what does that say about him and his music? His people did this.

by Anonymousreply 6June 26, 2022 7:25 PM

[quote] got dragged for saying pro choice instead of anti abortion

???

by Anonymousreply 7June 26, 2022 7:25 PM

[quote]So what does that say about him and his music? His people did this.

That's quite a leap of logic. "His people" include Kavanaugh because they're roughly the same age? FTR Alito and Thomas are boomers.

by Anonymousreply 8June 26, 2022 7:26 PM

"Gen X" isn't responsible for a decision made by the Supreme Court. The generational blamers on this board are embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 9June 26, 2022 7:26 PM

R3, his audience/fans are totally different than the conservative, heartland fans that the Dixie Chicks had when they were country-western.

by Anonymousreply 10June 26, 2022 7:27 PM

Green Day has always been a bore so good riddance.

by Anonymousreply 11June 26, 2022 7:29 PM

Don't want to be an American idiot.

by Anonymousreply 12June 26, 2022 7:31 PM

Wish I were rich enough to do the same.

by Anonymousreply 13June 26, 2022 7:31 PM

Of all the places to move to, he choose the UK? Has he heard of Brexit? Should have moved to just about any other country in Western Europe.

by Anonymousreply 14June 26, 2022 7:32 PM

R11, how apt that "Good Riddance" is the title of their biggest hit.

In any case, I suspect that Armstrong is just throwing a hissy fit and isn't gonna move anywhere or do jack shit other than pout.

by Anonymousreply 15June 26, 2022 7:32 PM

The accepted usage is anti abortion, r7. Messaging matters and the UK knows this. None of this pandering to the religious right by using the loaded word, "life".

by Anonymousreply 16June 26, 2022 7:33 PM

He always seemed like a wannabe British rock star, so this will work out well for him.

by Anonymousreply 17June 26, 2022 7:38 PM

So he picks the one country that's even worse.

by Anonymousreply 18June 26, 2022 7:40 PM

Bye Billesha!

by Anonymousreply 19June 26, 2022 7:52 PM

Is he really still sporting that black hair dye look from 2005?

by Anonymousreply 20June 26, 2022 7:56 PM

Manchild having a silly, little tantrum. If even one celebrity who's threatened to leave over the years actually did, I'd be amazed.

by Anonymousreply 21June 26, 2022 8:01 PM

I think it’s lack of sex that’s bringing him down.

by Anonymousreply 22June 26, 2022 8:01 PM

There's currently a lengthy thread detailing where DLers would want to move from the US in light of Roe. The feeling of disgust in our country right now is widespread.

Why should a rock star feel any different? He just has the means to do it and most of us don't.

I don't understand the pushback on this thread.

by Anonymousreply 23June 26, 2022 8:15 PM

Just curious: With all the troubles, (and The Troubles) in the UK, has anyone ever heard a British rock star go off about "Fuck the UK! Piece of shit country populated by cunts! I'm moving to [the US, France, wherever]!!"

I know plenty of UK rock stars have criticized their country. And I know most of them have residences outside the UK for tax purposes. But do they make a habit of raging against their country? I remember seeing Billy Bragg live. He had lots to say about the injustices of US wars, but he didn't comment on anything the UK was doing.

I wonder if Armstrong will announce he's "moving to [this country]!" in every country he tours.

by Anonymousreply 24June 26, 2022 8:16 PM

Muhammad has been the most popular name for baby boys in the U.K. for several years now. I'm sure when they become a majority, they'll ban abortion too. Where will Billie Joe move then?

by Anonymousreply 25June 26, 2022 8:16 PM

But the UK has Boris Johnson and Brexit, so they are perhaps marginally better than the US.

by Anonymousreply 26June 26, 2022 8:17 PM

Is he still claiming to be bisexual?

by Anonymousreply 27June 26, 2022 8:18 PM

Americans should go sit in a grotty flat in England, surrounded by chavs swilling bad tea and cursing out their local politicians when it's raining out. Who think typing FFS is the height of sophistication. It's a poor country with a lot of bad tempered, rude people in it.

Person with an English grandfather

by Anonymousreply 28June 26, 2022 8:32 PM

Grotty is such a good word.

by Anonymousreply 29June 26, 2022 9:42 PM

Its never helpful when a celebrity says this. IF they DO IT, its very bad form, since with their privilege and money they wouldn't suffer to fight for change. And if they DONT DO IT they are just blowhards. It's lose lose.

by Anonymousreply 30June 26, 2022 10:15 PM

[quote]his audience/fans are totally different than the conservative, heartland fans that the Dixie Chicks had when they were country-western.

Not convinced of this. I'm confident there are plenty of white, male, working-class 30 and 40 year old Trump supporters who are huge fans of Green Day.

by Anonymousreply 31June 26, 2022 10:37 PM

Overly dramatic to be sure, but he's absolutely correct. The U.S. has gone rotten to the core and yet grows worse still; and there's no reason for anyone to stick around and "fight" if they have other choices.

Maybe he's histrionic, maybe he's inarticulate in his point, maybe he's an asshole, a pretend bisexual, a bad tipper, or doesn't treat his dog well.

It's mock noble to pretend that he should stay and fight when people more knowledgeable, more articulate, more seasoned in communications or politics have been undone and proved ineffective despite superior position and passion.

This coward as you would say is cushioned by money enough to live well more or less wherever he might want to live. I don't blame him in the least for exercising his options and putting the U.S. an ocean away.

by Anonymousreply 32June 26, 2022 11:12 PM

He won't be part of a redneck agenda.

by Anonymousreply 33June 26, 2022 11:19 PM

I think we can all understand how he feels, but it is a shame that he doesn't use his celebrity to help the Democrats raise money or something.

by Anonymousreply 34June 26, 2022 11:22 PM

R31 Upper middle class support Trump more than they do. You classism use showing you fucking pig.

by Anonymousreply 35June 26, 2022 11:52 PM

R35 *is

by Anonymousreply 36June 26, 2022 11:52 PM

For those wondering why the pushback, are you very young? Some of us elders remember countless celebrities saying they would move out of the US and renounce their citizenship if: GHW Bush won; "W" won; "W" won re-election; Trump won; etc.

I can't recall any specific claims, but it wouldn't surprise me if people were proclaiming the same thing when Reagan was running the first and second times.

As far as I know, all of these terribly traumatized multimillionaires are still here in the US. So I call bullshit, and I call tantrum.

It would impress me a LOT more if someone with tremendous wealth and influence left the country and renounced their citizenship, and THEN explained that they'd done it because of Roe, or Trump, or W, or whatever.

(As a side question, since most of these celebrities deplore colonialism, whiteness, and the hideous racism it brings, why aren't they moving to nonwhite countries? Why do they always want to move to Europe, birthplace of colonialism and whiteness? After all, the infant US learned most of its worst tendencies at the knee of Mother England.)

by Anonymousreply 37June 26, 2022 11:58 PM

[quote] Just curious: With all the troubles, (and The Troubles) in the UK, has anyone ever heard a British rock star go off about "Fuck the UK! Piece of shit country populated by cunts! I'm moving to [the US, France, wherever]!!"

The Troubles are not a good comparison to what's happening in the US right now. Arguably a better parallel is to 1930s Germany since it restricted civil rights to an unprecedented degree. Many Germans got the fuck out in the 30s when they saw which way the wind was blowing.

by Anonymousreply 38June 27, 2022 12:02 AM

Good. And take the British actors with you, to.

Once the conservatives take over, we can finally get rid of the foreign actors that un-American, ultra-liberal Hollywood has forced upon us the past 15 or so years.

We're taking back America for Americans!

by Anonymousreply 39June 27, 2022 12:09 AM

*too

by Anonymousreply 40June 27, 2022 12:09 AM

If that pic of him in OP's post is recent he looks damn good for 50.

by Anonymousreply 41June 27, 2022 12:12 AM

Wimp!

by Anonymousreply 42June 27, 2022 12:29 AM

What guys has he hooked up with?

by Anonymousreply 43June 27, 2022 12:32 AM

Gasp! Oh god no, please not Billie Joe Armstrong!

Jk, what a nitwit.

by Anonymousreply 44June 27, 2022 1:00 AM

[quote]Upper middle class support Trump more than they do. You classism use showing you fucking pig.

I don't know what you're talking about but I suggest you take another look at one of those countless Trump rallies in rural America and tell me those people in the audience are "upper middle class." The truth is Trump attracts supporters from every class. His numbers are especially high among non-college educated voters.

by Anonymousreply 45June 27, 2022 3:37 AM

A DLer claimed they hooked up with Billie and he had a dirty ass.

by Anonymousreply 46June 27, 2022 4:28 AM

And who's to say that all these other countries, particularly in Europe, don't eventually fall to their own wave of fascism that is sweeping slowly but surely throughout other parts of the world?

by Anonymousreply 47June 27, 2022 4:48 AM

We'll see how serious he is if 1) he stops touring in the US and 2) starts paying British taxes.

I'll bet he does neither.

by Anonymousreply 48June 27, 2022 5:12 AM

Omg. He's 50 now. Christ I'm getting old. Always loved his spirit.

by Anonymousreply 49June 27, 2022 5:15 AM

I remember when Stephen Baldwin threatened to leave the US if Obama won. I don't think he ever followed through on that.

by Anonymousreply 50June 27, 2022 5:18 AM

RENOUNSHING HISH SHITTIZENSHIP!

by Anonymousreply 51June 27, 2022 5:31 AM

His cut cock won't fit in over there.

by Anonymousreply 52June 27, 2022 5:31 AM

The Dems will do what with the money? Campaigns for more anti abortion Dems like Cuellar?

by Anonymousreply 53June 27, 2022 5:45 AM

I assume he's already been permitted to live in the UK?

by Anonymousreply 54June 27, 2022 2:48 PM

Those 50 year old lips are mucho kissable. Lucky Brits!

by Anonymousreply 55June 27, 2022 2:59 PM

Good for him! I would if I could and I appreciate the sentiment. America has become a loathsome place.

by Anonymousreply 56June 27, 2022 3:05 PM

Eh. He was probably thinking of relocating anyway. Now he can get attention and kudos for it.

by Anonymousreply 57June 27, 2022 3:23 PM

A rich white man move from a rich white majority country to another rich white majority country.

This never happened before !

by Anonymousreply 58June 27, 2022 3:43 PM

so now he's just a regular idiot?

by Anonymousreply 59June 27, 2022 10:54 PM

[quote] I don't understand the pushback on this thread.

Really? How about the fact that he’s a fucking pussy? The Christian Reich, led by Uncle ThomASS has declared war on OUR country. So I guess you can pack your bags and leave, like the draft dodging pussy Donald Trump would, or you can man or woman-up and stand your ground and take back what belongs to us. Understand now?

by Anonymousreply 60June 27, 2022 11:03 PM

Grass is always greener, Billy Joe Green Day.

by Anonymousreply 61June 27, 2022 11:20 PM

Well, he did have the time of his life here.

by Anonymousreply 62June 27, 2022 11:24 PM

If you won't fight for what you believe in, even when you know you might lose, you don't belong in America.

I will fight for my rights until my death. And the rights of others. Because that is MY America. No single group or man controls America. We the People do. We seem to have forgotten that, or think that means we need to tweet more.

And, R32, you, sir, are a coward.

by Anonymousreply 63June 27, 2022 11:33 PM

Also,

She, she screams in silence.

by Anonymousreply 64June 27, 2022 11:33 PM

this guy is too short to be a rock star. ugly. punch and delete. won't be missed.

by Anonymousreply 69June 27, 2022 11:48 PM

He’s a doll

by Anonymousreply 70June 27, 2022 11:52 PM

R60, R62, R65, You, sirs, are patriotic fools who don't stand a chance. It's a damn shame that you don't, but what do you think you will do: Vote? Protest? Make $500 contributions to the candidates you favor? Volunteer with Get Out the Vote Drives? Smite your Republican relatives? Preach to the already converted? Molotovs?

You've already lost key rights and the ability "to create change," but structurally you're severely weakened and in numbers of like minded souls? Sorry, that news is worse, whether in reality or in rigged voting districts, or rigged election results. What are you going to shine a light on when truth and lies are inseparable in the minds of the yokels?

I wish you good luck, but you will need much more.

by Anonymousreply 71June 27, 2022 11:53 PM

The UK is in shithole status re: BREXIT. If you have the means move to New Zealand. New Zealand, not Australia.

by Anonymousreply 72June 27, 2022 11:54 PM

While I agree with him politically, I'm not going to give up everything my ancestors fought for.

by Anonymousreply 73June 27, 2022 11:55 PM

Meh. You don't always have to fight especially battles you can't win in your lifetime. In the early 90s I was a young man and I was absolutely fried and destroyed by AIDS killing some of my friends and even two lovers. It was NYC and some people suffered horribly extra because there was no social safety net and no universal access to humane dignified health care. NYC was already becoming one of the global cities designed to serve the very rich. Capitalism was running amok. Well I have three passports so I got the fuck out of dodge. I love USA but there are battles I can't win. There are people who hate the poor and the sick and minorities and gay folks, too. For one of the richest countries in the world, a lot of people are getting shafted, since mid 80s, moving more and more wealth up the ladder, destroying nice lives that should be available for most, since the country and GDP is so large. Its simply not as dog eat dog in other rich countries. The American national government is severely broken, not productive and both parties seem content with the ever widening gap between rich and poor.

by Anonymousreply 74June 28, 2022 12:03 AM

Bye.

At least he'll probably have quicker access to finding retro-Lulu wigs there.

by Anonymousreply 75June 28, 2022 12:11 AM

What a privilege to just decide you're leaving one country for another and then to announce it to cheers from an adoring audience.

by Anonymousreply 76June 28, 2022 12:13 AM

Just you watch, he won't do nothing.

by Anonymousreply 77June 28, 2022 12:18 AM

^^ either that, or he'll be begging to return to the US within 5 years

by Anonymousreply 78June 28, 2022 3:17 AM

I don't think it's that easy to do this. Eduardo Saverin (Facebook co-founder) did this and I remember reading he had to jump through hoops. And of course once it's done...good luck if you change your mind.

Billi Jo might have to re-think.

by Anonymousreply 79June 28, 2022 11:03 AM

R79: It's not that difficult to relinquish or renounce one's U.S. citizenship (there's a slight difference, the first being the usual route for someone who moved to Portugal having started a life there with no intent to return to the U.S. or to continue citizenship.) First, you must have citizenship in another country in hand; they won't do it if it would render you country-less. There is an application with fees of about $2350 and an interview in a U.S. embassy or wherever you hold another citizenship and wish to make your home.

Then there is the settling up financially with U.S. tax obligations and wealth transfer if applicable. Up to a certain amount you need only prove that your last year of taxes on U.S. income are paid (and last five years of taxes reviewed), beyond that there is an exit tax which applies I think after the first $699,000 of capital gains from the U.S. It would be a one-time accounting worry for some, but would do away with the need to file a U.S. tax statement, whether or not you owe U.S. taxes, for the rest of your life.

Renunciation or relinquishment is permanent. They in theory can cause potential complications should you travel to the U.S. Social Security eligibiity is not affected.

It's not that complicated: Say "I'm out of here" in an embassy interview, settle up your taxes, pay any exit taxes of funds transferred out of the U.S. on your leaving, Thant's it. Of course people with tons of money, a Facebook founder, say, have a greater burden of evidence, but it's just once.

by Anonymousreply 80June 28, 2022 11:27 AM

Billi is just doing this because he doesn't want to pay taxes on his millions.

Oh and remind me never to listen to artists named Billie.

The U.K. has been in a deep cycle of shit. It's discouraging to see (as it is too for the U.S.), and it won't be shaken off quickly. All the same, their government isn't hell-bent on turning back a century of laws meant to improve the lives of its people. The UK is in better shape than the U.S., now and going looking to the immediate and long term future.

Monarchy? So fucking what? They are mere window dressing for American and Japanese tourists and DL threads. It has about fuck all to do with government or daily life in the U.K., no matter what some old American Selfridge's tea swooning, Downton Abbey swilling, "don't you just love how majestic it all is?" moaning by BRF American fanatics on DL would have us believe.

Entrenched class system? Yeah, the Duke of Beaufort is doing alright, and his kind, but where are the rape the earth Bezos-Zuckerberg-Musk-Koch equivalents who are villains on a world scale? The U.S> has a worse class system because it's not confined to old country seats and London townhouses.

by Anonymousreply 95June 28, 2022 1:12 PM

Pretty sanctimonious starement for someone who made women earning minimum wage clean up after his tantrums because he was so "punk". Punk would be a boot his fucking brat face. He sounds like a rich & whiny suburban kid when he sings, and he obviously never, ever had a shit job.

I'm a bit younger than he is, but I just can't stand people who do these kinds of things. I never liked him or his fake ass "punk" band, but I actively started hating them after that. I always like mention it when his name comes up.

It's totally expected that he would make such a statement. Still having temper tantrums and begging for attention at 50.

Really, R102...just how do you suppose they'll do that? Just pack a bag and flounce into some other country, who will welcome them with open arms? Of course, being Americans, they camove anywhere in the world, without regard for immigration laws. or money. Delusional.

Americans are blissfully unaware that our current immigration policy is by far the most liberal and open in the world. Every other country on Earth has much stricter controls on who comes in, and who stays.

Americans think they can just waltz into any other country, fling their arms open, say, "I'm here!," and be accepted.

He's a pair of cheesy, slimy balls. Never liked their music, so it's fine. Goodbye. Good Riddance. = D

by Anonymousreply 110June 28, 2022 2:41 PM

Would anyone like to throw him a going away (FINALLY) party??

by Anonymousreply 111June 28, 2022 2:44 PM

I know nothing of this person or their work and so I do not have any interest in his outcome. But, I do have a lot of friends in the UK and regret that they are to be burdened with someone of his ilk.

Americans are blissfully unaware because it's not true. The U.S. is in top 10 lists of countries by number of immigrants admitted, or refugees (another point(, but not by the ease and friendliness and openness to immigrants, R108.

I don't imagine you've ever petitioned the U.S. government for permanent residence status for a non-U.S. citizen spouse? Liberal and open are not words that come to mind in the process.

R107, Canada is open. People are leaving.

[quote]just like those bitches on The View complaining about Roe being overturned, yet they don't seem to know the fact that the Bahamas (where they're on location) doesn't allow abortions either

They don’t live in the Bahamas, you fucking idiot, nor are they planning to move there. Do you even think before posting?

Green Day punk? My ass. They really don't know what punk is. Shut up Billie Joe and go write another song about masturbation.

R115: You are asking a serious question of someone 9n DL who watches The View?

It's obvious that rich Americans and Australians always migrate to The UK because it's Anglophone and it has this image of being "high-class." It's funny how the fancy British stereotype has never evolved past the Victorian era in American eyes. The British I've met who worked in The US, seem just as boring and dim as Americans and they have just as bad fashion sense too..

I find it funny nobody thinks of Canada as an option at all. If you're an American, Canada is basically the same culturally and there's little variation of the accent except in the Francophone areas. Canada has a higher living standard. Plus Toronto and Vancouver are used a lot for filming American TV. I'm surprised minor American TV stars don't just live there especially Hallmark actors.

Canada is a frozen wasteland. Even the trash it produces like Justin Bieber refuses to go back.

I love Green Day's music.

I used to appreciate Billie Joe Armstrong and to a certain extant I still do.

But he's had some serious substance abuse issues and I think he's been losing his mind since his drunken tirade a few years ago.

I wouldn't be surprised if he had some mental health issues that he was struggling with.

I was flipping around various stations on the radio in my car today, and Green Day was on three times in the 20 minutes I was in the car.

R83 research has show there is more class mobility in now in UK than in the USA. USA is low among industrialized nations for class mobility.

by Anonymousreply 124July 1, 2022 1:20 AM

I can "believe" he'd renounce citizenship.

And actually mean it — right now.

Especially after Jan. 6.

He can do it.

And if he does leave the USA in disgust.

Then why not announce it?

But I wish he'd say he was going somewhere more interesting, like, Mexico.

Or somewhere more respectable, like, Canada.
