THE BLACK PHONE (2022)
Saw it tonight and it was pretty good.
Surprisingly touching.
The bond between the sister and brother was refreshing and I actually got a little tear in my eye when, after the father beat her, she rested her head on the brother's shoulder.
A few jump scares but the emotional ties of the siblings, the bullying, standing up for yourself is really what made this a good film.

I saw it this afternoon and loved it! Joe Hill, who’s involved with the film, wrote the short story the movie is based on. He is very much his father’s (Stephen King) son. The movie reminds me of stories King wrote in the 70s and 80s. It’s even set in 1978 which is part of its charm.
All of the actors are excellent. Newcomer Mason Thames is in almost every scene and does a great job as Finney. Ethan Hawke as The Grabber reminds me of Joaquin Phoenix in The Joker.
Everything about the film is good. I highly recommend it, especially if you are a fan of thrillers, horror movies or Stephen King’s work.

I love Joe Hill’s writing! He is fantastic. A chip off the old block. N0S4A2 is one of the best horror books I’ve ever read. I am excited for this movie, Ethan Hawke is such a good actor.

Wow, nobody saw this? I thought there would be more replies. I thought it was great. Brad Renfro 2.0 was very good.

[Quote] I love me some Ethan Hawke.
Ethan knows how to pick his horror movies.

I really liked it, I read the story it's based on years ago and couldn't remember what happened which was good because I didn't know what was going to happen next.
Ethan Hawke was very sinister, though I wanted a little more backstory to his character.
The kid actors were both really good - the girl I thought was phenomenal, I can see her being a movie star in future.
Anyone else thought it was kind of sexy when Ethan's character was sat in the kitchen topless with his legs spread? Oh daddy!

I liked it but was hoping Hawke’s character would be more sinister. I guess they didn’t want to go too dark but another scene or two of Hawke threatening/terrorizing the kids would have upped the horror.

This seems like a Nancy Drew episode. So the Copperhead kidnaps children? Why would I see this in theaters?

I was disappointed James Ransone didn't have a jerk off scene in this movie.

What a massive POS this was. Who the fuck are you moronic shills who liked this?

I just watched this on Peacock, and I really enjoyed it.

Is this for fraus?
Why would I watch a movie starring children?
Stink off!

It is a horror movie starring children, several of whom get dead. Frauen would turn Karen and ask to speak to the manager while watching this movie.

This was the last movie my spouse and I went to see. It was watchable, but I wouldn’t watch it again. When I heard the premise of the movie I figured they’d set it in another time period, it didn’t sound like something we deal with in current times. The Lord of the Flies-type school culture was familiar to me, having started school in the late 70s. Those of you who decry the Millennial culture created by overprotective parents, it came about for a reason

Sounds like r16 had a bad fagging experience at Eton, probably from not being VGL.
Sad!

Spooky and strangely sweet. Kid actors were great. Agree that the scenes with Ethan sitting/waiting were disturbingly…erotic

I don’t understand why he wasn’t fucking that kid, or at least actually terrorizing him; just keeping him prisoner in the basement for no motive or apparent reason was head-scratchingly disappointing.

R20 it's strongly implied that the boys are kept prisoner and the torture happens when they "misbehave" and try to escape
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 11, 2022 5:33 AM
|
But for what purpose? Just hoping they’ll try to escape in order to justify the punishment?

R22 lots of serial killers have rituals. This was the grabber's ritual.

Very good movie with a satisfying ending. It was a huge hit grossing around $90m domestically with a tiny budget.

I never watch this kind of movie, especially when an author I like has written the source material. Too many disappointments in the past. But friends had a watch party online and I joined. I was so surprised by this movie. I didn’t squirm in my seat or look at the time (I am easily distracted,) —- the movie held my attention from start to finish. I always enjoy Ethan Hawke. I think he is one of the best out there today. Highly recommend this. (And First Reformed & Juliet, Naked if you are a fan of Ethan.)

Movie completely sucked. Doesn't answer any of the questions it raises and is riddled with plotholes. Strictly for the undemanding. And it is completely not horror.

I would have preferred The Black Phone without the supernatural elements.
Ethan Hawke was great as ever.

Haven't seen it BUT in the previews, there's a scene with Hawke in a mask with his arms bulging standing in a doorway or something, and it was kinda hot.

I've been passing it by thinking it was just another torture porn flick.

No, R34, not torture porn. More psychological thriller.

R33 when he’s masked and shirtless in the kitchen, just waiting, it’s so insanely sexy that I doubt it was Ethan, but a body double.

I watched it just now. Not what I expected and I thought it was better than I'd thought which was just another torture porn flick. The only thing left unexplained was the grabber's motivation.
