Favorite discontinued grocery items?

I really miss Stouffers’ Noodles Romanoff. At least they still carry Turkey Tetrazzini and Chicken a la King, but they aren’t the same as the Romanoff.

I also miss Mothers sandwich cookies. The English Tea and Taffy.

Speadables! Delicious potted meat sandwich spreads.

Carnation breakfast bars. Originally I was supposed to have the drinks to help with weight gain as a kid, but I wanted food so my mom bought the bars. Within a few years it vanished from shelves.

R2 I remember those. I loved the chocolate chip ones.

Half of what I buy at Trader Joe’s. I’m not mad, because I get that they have to discontinue things to make space for new things for me to love. But some things they’ve gotten rid of hurt!

Hormel used to have a sausage/hot dog type item called Wranglers. They described them as course ground weiners. They had a cowboy on the package, and were somewhere between a smoked sausage and a hot dog. I enjoyed them as a kid, also after bar, or when high. Alas, they disappeared at least a decade ago - I don't drink or smoke anymore, but every once in a while I get a nostalgia craving for them, the same kind that causes me to periodically eat a Party Pizza or a can of spaghetti-os.

GARDENBURGERS, the best mild-tasting rice-based veggie burgers out there!!! I was actually really upset when my local grocery stores stopped carrying them, and on the Kellogg’s website, I found out the entire product has now been discontinued in the past year or so.

I hate the other brands—they are too meaty for my tastes. Impossible burgers are very fleshy.

by Anonymousreply 22June 23, 2022 10:17 PM

I like Morningstar brand. The chickpea ones.

Andes Toffee Crunch Chocolate Thins. Back 30 years ago when they were actually made of chocolate. Here're today's ingredients. Does this sound appetizing?

SUGAR, PALM KERNEL AND PALM OIL, NONFAT MILK, COCOA, LACTOSE, MILK PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, RICE FLOUR, SOY LECITHIN (AN EMULSIFIER), MOLASSES, CANOLA OIL, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS, SALT, BAKING SODA, COLORS ADDED (RED 40 LAKE, YELLOW 5 LAKE, BLUE 1 LAKE), CORN SYRUP SOLIDS.

I LOVED that stuff. GAVE IT A 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 review on Amazon, wrote to the company — all to no avail. Now I hoard Zatarain’s Dirty Rice in case it happens again.

I love Gardenburgers (original flavor), except I thought they were oats-based (not rice). The size of the patty got smaller a few years ago. A while back, Costco sold them in a 9 or 10-pack (original-size patties).

They became harder and harder to find. I didn't realize they were completely discontinued.

by Anonymousreply 27June 23, 2022 11:21 PM

^ I didn't know they were discontinued either.😔

by Anonymousreply 28June 23, 2022 11:30 PM

My Kroger discontinued Gardenburger a couple years ago and I'm sad too because I like 'em. Two things, though. Kelloggs' Morningstar (which also owns Gardenburger) has a also has a 'Garden Veggie' flavor. I'm not sure if it's similar

I also discovered a current offer to sell cases of Gardenburgers on Amazon for over $100, which is weird since they're frozen and I'm not in an Amazon Fresh area. Copious amounts of dry ice? Is it old stock still being sold?

by Anonymousreply 46June 24, 2022 4:50 AM

r46 Thanks for mentioning a BirdsEye frozen vegetable medley, they had one called New Orleans(IIRC) Various beans(string, wax, lima) in a tomato-y sauce. Loved it when I served it with mashed potatoes and pork chops done with the Shake 'n Bake BBQ flavor(also among the missing, I believe)

Another "Harrumph!" at Trader Joes for discontinuing their orange marmalade. Not as bitter as I remember my all-time fave(Chivers) but very good nonetheless.

Way BITD Nabisco had a triangular snack cracker that was loaded with poppy seeds, very tasty indeed. Maybe the price of poppy seeds go too high and they missed their price point? Did their triangle cutting machine break down and no one could repair it?

Boxed cake mix manufacturers "discontinued" about 3 ounces on most, if not all, of their lines. C'mon DH, Betty and Pillsbury, I need those coupla' ounces to make some cookies and bars using your decades-old recipes.

Am I remembering correctly, was it Lipton that used to have a line of casserole-type entrees many years ago? The Beef Stroganoff one was particularly tasty. The box was an odd shape, parallelogram perhaps?

R54 We still have RC Cola in Chicago.

by Anonymousreply 55June 24, 2022 1:49 PM

In the 1990s you could get boxes of dinner helpers that had a bag of herbed or flavored rice, a can of gravy or sauce, and then a bread crumb topping. You'd put the rice in a casserole with 2 cups of water, put your own chicken or other meat on top of that, cover it in the sauce, then top it with the bread crumbs and bake, about 40 minutes. Those were the best. I'm sure it was all sodium.

I think they were Kraft "One Dish Bakes" or something along those lines. They were so much better than the skillet meals you can get.

For those who miss US Marathon bars, Cadbury’s in the UK make essentially the same thing called Curly Wurly. I’m sure you can find them somewhere online in the US.

Speaking of candy no longer made. I miss those Brach’s Pick n Mix Neapolitan coconut squares and Brach’s Jube Jel chicks and rabbits for Easter.

Off topic: lost in translation candy. Smarties in the US are called Fizzers in the UK and Rockets in Canada. Smarties in the UK are sort of like another version of M&Ms. Circus Peanuts in the US (the orange coloured, banana flavoured stale marshmallow thingies) taste exactly like ‘foam bananas’ in the UK which more sensible are at least yellow banana shapes. They come in two sizes: around 2” and mini.

So true, R131.

by Anonymousreply 133June 25, 2022 7:24 AM

I saw Jif back today. There were only like 2 jars, and a ton of generic store brand which they NEVER normally have. Where did it come from if they don't normally carry it? They suddenly created generic PB due to the Jif emergency?

by Anonymousreply 134June 25, 2022 7:41 AM

Mr. Salty Pretzel sticks.

Entemanns was sold to BIMBO, a Mexican conglomerate - along with Thomas English muffins, Bay's English muffins, Orowheat, and pretty much 90% of the grocery store bread aisle.

It sucks. Next time you go shopping, check the package. Fuck BIMBO..

I don't remember you FAT hoes! There's plenty to still get from the store. Clearly Canadian/New York seltzer sodas?? They sell them at world market now though. They're not fucking diet though and I'll puke from real soda.

by Anonymousreply 139June 25, 2022 9:29 AM

R136, Thanks. Didn't know what happened to Orowheat whole wheat bread. Like Mothers' cookies TPTB kept the name but changed the product. No bueno.

Miss pastel colored Easter Eggs filled with a soft coconut center. Today's hard shell candy eggs don't compare.

by Anonymousreply 140June 25, 2022 10:48 AM

I remember the Pepperidge Farm pizza. So good.

by Anonymousreply 141June 25, 2022 11:02 AM

Jif was recalled because of salmonella, which is why it disappeared. I'd bought some for the first time since I was a kid, because the store was out of every other kind of peanut butter, then 2 weeks later got an email telling me about the recall. Thus endeth my Jif experience.

by Anonymousreply 142June 25, 2022 11:56 AM

Snickers used to make a bar called Crisper, which was similar to Whatchamacallits, and they were really good. Discontinued a few years ago, sadly. I can still get Whatchamacallits at Economy Candy, though.

by Anonymousreply 143June 25, 2022 11:58 AM

Mama Celeste made a good pizza too - something about the cheese made it better than Totinos etc .

by Anonymousreply 144June 25, 2022 12:01 PM

I used to love the Imperial Romanov Burgers. Made from real Romanovs! Good eats. Unfortunately they had to discontinue the item when they ran out of Romanovs.

by Anonymousreply 145June 25, 2022 12:09 PM

PB Crisps made by Planters. They were graham crackers shaped like shelled peanuts with either peanut butter or chocolate inside.

Magic Middles cookies

Fruit Slushes-I think they were on the juice aisle. They were little cups in a pack and you’d freeze them and they turned into an amazing slush.

There was also something my mom would get my sister and me as a treat every so often because they were a little pricey. It was in the ice cream section and I can’t remember if it was a milkshake or sundae, but it was Milky Way and there was ice cream with chocolate fudge and caramel and came in a cup. This was late ‘80s/early ‘90s and damn they were good. Does anyone remember these?

by Anonymousreply 146June 25, 2022 12:26 PM

HoJo’s frozen macaroni and cheese and their Toastees blueberry toaster muffins. The best, period.

by Anonymousreply 147June 25, 2022 12:29 PM

Yes, R76. How perceptive of you.

Don't forget the Chunky of Color part, too!

by Anonymousreply 148June 25, 2022 1:09 PM

Does anyone remember the 7-up chocolate bar? Similar to 7 different bites in a box of chocolates.

How about individual foil wrapped baba au rums? They sold for 25 cents in the 1970's.

by Anonymousreply 149June 25, 2022 2:10 PM

R106 They still make Chicken in a Biskit and it's listed as in stock at Walmart's online site.

by Anonymousreply 150June 25, 2022 2:19 PM

The Nabisco cookie assortment. It had a little bit of everything in one box. It included the Swiss Cremes, a tastier precursor to the Golden Oreo.

by Anonymousreply 151June 25, 2022 2:26 PM

R115 California has all sorts of strange rules regarding agricultural products, especially ones not from their state. Maybe the apples weren't grown in accordance with some weird CA-only law, or the cinnamon is from a country they think we should embargo, or the flour is bleached, etc.

by Anonymousreply 152June 25, 2022 2:26 PM

Sprite Remix Berryclear. I could drink my weight in that shit. I also remember Minute Maid apple juice in glass bottles when I was little in the late 90s—tasted so much better than the plastic bottle ones.

by Anonymousreply 153June 25, 2022 3:47 PM

I'll go with:

Customer Service.

by Anonymousreply 154June 25, 2022 4:37 PM

I can't for the life of me remember the brand names of either of these but:

- Glazed donuts you got from the freezer section and were supposed to pop them in your oven to warm them up. They were heavenly and would melt in your mouth.

- Frozen blueberry corn cake squares that would fit in your toaster. Those were one of my favorite things for breakfast.

These were both back in the 80's.

by Anonymousreply 155June 25, 2022 4:51 PM

Looking at this list, it's no wonder we're all so fat.

by Anonymousreply 156June 25, 2022 5:49 PM

Another vote for Mystic Mint cookies. Damn, they were good.

And no, the somewhat similar Oreos are not close.

No company ever discontinued vegetables.

[quote]No company ever discontinued vegetables.

They should all discontinue Brussels sprouts.

by Anonymousreply 160June 25, 2022 6:31 PM

R154 I was gong to say hot box boys who offer to take your groceries out to your car.

by Anonymousreply 161June 25, 2022 6:32 PM

R161 Isn't a hot box when someone either burns down a joint or releases a bunch of farts inside a sealed car?

by Anonymousreply 162June 25, 2022 7:08 PM

The Carr's ginger lemon cookies (looked like Oreos) used to be really good. Now, horrible. Not technically discontinued, but not the same.

by Anonymousreply 163June 25, 2022 7:11 PM

r162, maybe you're thinking of a Dutch Oven, where you fart under the sheets and then force your partner's head under the covers?

R163 Sad to hear; I rather liked those. Did they drastically cutback on the ginger?

by Anonymousreply 166June 25, 2022 7:32 PM

R166, IIRC, the cookies seemed smaller and really dry (powdery, maybe). I think it was more of a texture thing, like they had cut back on the butter or fat.

by Anonymousreply 167June 25, 2022 7:37 PM

R167 Thanks... still sad to hear. Perhaps they previously contained Palm Oil, and recipe was altered. So many makers of biscuits, cookies, and crackers are trying to cut back or eliminate it.

Oh, I just thought of one: Slice soda. It was sooooo good - kind of a soft citrus flavor? Big in the mid-80s

Whole Foods used to sell Rachel's yogurt—it was good, tart yogurt with unusual flavor combinations like plum-lavender. Shortly after I discovered it, they abruptly stopped selling it; this coincided with a move, and I thought it was a regional difference, but I never saw it again at any whole foods or anywhere. I think it's a UK brand.

This was around 2010. Since then supermarkets increasingly only sell "Greek" yogurt, along with the basically acceptable Brown Cow ("cream on top!"). Dannon has become worthless. Stonyfield has a revolting mucilaginous texture. Then there's a panoply of overpriced yogurts from Iceland and those made from cashew milk or similar. What happened?

by Anonymousreply 173June 26, 2022 12:57 AM

For anyone craving old brand sodas, there is a store in LA called Galcos's that stocks many discontinued brands that they have made especially for them. They're not cheap, but they ship.

by Anonymousreply 174June 26, 2022 1:01 AM

R173, the company may have failed. Sometimes these small vendors just go kaput.

I used to get a delicious cinnamon raisin mochi and the company just disappeared. No one makes anything like it anymore. i can get white rice mochi, but it’s not the same.

R173, what kind of yogurt do you like? If you like whole milk yogurt, try Mountain High (not the low-fat). IMO, Brown Cow and Stonyfield are pretty similar. I never noticed a bad texture with Stonyfield.

Right now, I'm liking Fage 5%, which is a strained whole milk yogurt. I eat it with honey.

If you like flavors, try Noosa. My favorite flavor is the cherry. Comes in small containers and expensive, though.

by Anonymousreply 176June 26, 2022 1:19 AM

Nearly all the regular fruit-on-the-botoom yogurt has gone away. Kroger was making six flavors. They've now cut that to three. One of which I don't like.

I'm not a fan of Greek yogurt at all. Noosa *Australian" yogurt is okay, but nothing I want all the time, plus it's overpriced.

Dannon supposedly still makes seven fruit-on-the-bottom flavors, but they're nowhere to be found.

Whitney's yogurt. It was the creamiest, most custardy yogurt I've had to this day, and the fruit on the bottom was thick and luscious. No idea why it went away.

Op we have those taffy cookies in some Smart & Final’s in California

by Anonymousreply 181June 26, 2022 7:19 AM

R180, I LOVED Whitney’s lemon yogurt. The Skyr lemon yogurt is super creamy. Try it, you might like it.

If you like the old-school Dannon fruit-on-the-bottom, you can mix plain whole-milk Dannon or Stonyfield with a good fruit preserve. Bonne Maman is decent quality. There’s a watery tart brand called Erivan that is actually like what yogurt started out being, what I remember from the 1970s. Sometimes it’s refreshing to eat a spoonful or two of that stuff, even though I hated it as a kid.

by Anonymousreply 182June 26, 2022 7:31 AM

Thank you, R182! I'll check those out!

Stouffers Lobster Newburg

Entenmann's Louisiana Crunch Cake

There was also a delicious Entenmann's danish with walnuts and icing; my grandmother always kept one around. My mother didn't allow us to have sweets, so I loved having that at Nana's house.

by Anonymousreply 184June 26, 2022 8:25 AM

R184, Entenmann’s used to be so delicious. Their Louisiana Crunch Cake was heavenly. I’d save the crunchies for last. Now I see them and there are hardly any crunchies sprinkled on the top. Back in the day, the cakes were positively encrusted with them. I loved the Cherry Cheese Danish, too, full of plump cherries. The last time I got it (years ago), it was just some gummy red stuff with about two cherries per cake. Awful.

by Anonymousreply 185June 26, 2022 8:41 AM

[quote]Entenmann's Louisiana Crunch Cake

I'd forgotten about those, I used to get them regularly in the 1990s. Haven't seen one in 20 years. The cherry cheese danish doesn't have even 2 measly cherries anymore, unfortunately. Entenmann's just tastes like Hostess now.
