Emerging woke homophobia shows how progressives demand conformity

For years, activists have been trying to minimize the role of gay men in the battle for their own rights

Gay men spent decades fighting for legal rights and social acceptance — but some far left circles now consider them insufficiently radical. Consequently, there has been an emerging “woke homophobia” that denigrates gay men and attempts to minimize their role in LGBTQ history. This new strain of homophobia shows how woke advocacy for minority rights is often politically conditional — ”We will fight for you, so long as you adopt our ideology.”

Because woke homophobia hasn’t been formally studied, it’s hard to break down and analyze. However, examples have been collected in an infamous Google photo album, which is publicly accessible and includes over 4,500 screenshots of woke activists attacking gay men — calling them “fa***ts” who will “burn in hell” and need to be “erased” and “cancelled,” while advocating that society “normalize homophobia,” among other things.

Among some radical leftists, being a “cis gay” (cisgendered gay man) has become a slur.

Some parts of the woke left deny the existence of same-sex attraction and have attempted to brand homosexuality as a “genital fetish” that needs to be unlearned — conversion therapy, more or less. If a gay man prefers male genitals and rejects pressure to “interrogate” his orientation, that is wildly offensive to some.

The aforementioned Google album includes tweets that excoriate gay men for “centering their sexuality around liking d**k” — tweets that lecture gay men about how being “obsessed” with male anatomy is “bioessentialist” and about how “same sex attraction isn’t a thing.”

Now, to be fair, some gay men are cruel towards trans people who want to date them — and, rather than respectfully declining their advances, treat them as lepers. Being propositioned by someone who you’re sexually incompatible with doesn’t give you licence to humiliate them — but respect goes both ways, and gay men shouldn’t be shamed for enforcing their sexual boundaries.

Thankfully, many on the left still understand the legitimacy of sexual orientation. But attacks on same-sex attraction are prevalent enough to warrant discussion about how recent attempts to dismiss biology from sex and gender have negatively impacted same-sex attracted individuals.

Woke homophobia extends beyond sex, though. Many progressives now consider gay men too politically unreliable — too conservative, though in these circles, even moderate leftism is considered unbearable. They then leverage homophobic insults to harass gay men into political submission.

The discourse around Pete Buttigieg, an openly gay man who ran to be the Democrat’s presidential nominee in the 2020 U.S. election, and is now transportation secretary, illustrates this quite well. Buttigieg was staunchly progressive, but was not radical enough for many woke voices. Progressives attacked him by recycling homophobic language and tropes, which gay journalist Brad Polumbo outlined in Quillette.

For example, The New Republic published an article by a progressive writer who said that Buttigieg, as a gay man, would be too preoccupied with sex and drugs to govern. Buttigieg was further smeared as being not a real gay, such as in one CounterPunch essay that called him him an “Uncle Twink” and reduced his complex life as a gay man to someone who “take(s) it up the ass.” With allies like that, who needs enemies?

Similarly, the CBC published an article in 2020 that hectored gay men as a whole. The author, who is gay himself, insinuated that the gay community’s insufficient wokeness was a product of vanity and decadence — because homophobic tropes about moral corruption are the only way to explain ideological diversity among a community, apparently.

These kinds of attacks have happened before to other minority groups that are insufficiently woke. Straight black men, who are relatively conservative, have sometimes been called the “white people of black people.” Now that Latinos are drifting away from the Democratic Party in the United States, there is a push to recategorize them as white.

The message is loud and clear: your legitimacy as a minority, with all the attendant political and moral influence, is conditional on political obedience. This happens not only at the individual level, but to entire communities. What is unique to gay men, though, is attempts to strip them of their own history. For years, some woke activists have spread the lie that gay men didn’t substantively contribute to the fight for their own rights, a narrative that has also been amplified by mainstream outlets like USA Today, as well as the CBC. For the past few years, the arrival of Pride season has been heralded with waves of social posts and memes making this argument.

They argue that credit for LGBTQ rights activism should instead be overwhelmingly given to trans women of colour. Why? Because two trans women of colour, Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, supposedly “threw the first brick at Stonewall” (New York’s 1969 Stonewall Riot is considered the ignition point of contemporary gay rights activism). In contrast, gay men are imagined by to have twiddled their thumbs.

The LGBTQ community, and gay men especially, are therefore supposed to show political obsequience because we “owe” trans women for Pride.

It’s a dumb narrative that operates on the premise that social advocacy creates debts that need to be repaid. But you cannot legitimately advocate for a community’s good if you believe that your advocacy saddles that community with a debt to you — especially if you believe that debt entitles you to tell other people how to think.

It’s also ridiculous to reduce the history of LGBTQ rights activism to throwing a brick. LGBTQ rights were built by the tremendous work of countless people. If you conceptualized all of that labour as a handful of sand, throwing a brick at Stonewall is but a speck in the mound.

The legal protections enjoyed by the LGBTQ community were not secured by rioting, but by complex, long-term organizing efforts, which included arduous legal challenges that forced courts to recognize LGBTQ people as a protected class. Gay men spearheaded many of these challenges.

Gay men also established much of the social infrastructure that made LGBTQ community-building possible — for example, the staff of The Body Politic, a pioneering Canadian LGBTQ publication, was dominated by gay men. There is no LGBTQ history without gay men. We don’t owe anyone else for our rights.

[quote]Because two trans women of colour, Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, supposedly “threw the first brick at Stonewall”

A bit of PURE FICTION that neither drag queen asserted in his own life, but has been embraced by the trans agenda in their cowardly attempts to elevate these two now dead gay men, neither of whom ever claimed to be present or even integral in the Stonewall uprising!

Younger trans-obsessed gays and millions of straight people have swallowed this bilge water and are enraged when the factual underpinnings of their fantasy are questioned!

{quote]Buttigieg was staunchly progressive

How so? No progressive thinks Buttigieg was staunchly progressive - he was in a "stop Bernie" group with several other centrist figures, he dropped out and endored Biden for the promise of a cabiney position in Biden's cabinet - and no one would call Biden progressive. As mayor of South Bend he didn't have a progressive record, either. What progressive programs or proposals did he endorse, exactly?

by Anonymousreply 6June 24, 2022 3:03 AM

Oh, shut up, troll.

by Anonymousreply 7June 24, 2022 3:05 AM

Time to drop the queers, and have gay pride marches again.

We do need to be able to have adult conversations about things like gay and lesbian erasure and some of the weird, incel-ish bullshit that goes on with trolls who are fixated on cis gays (and lesbians) who won't fuck them. The phrase "woke homophobia" is not going to facilitate those discussions.

by Anonymousreply 15July 10, 2022 7:20 PM

Wokes are bigger idiots than trumpsters.

No surprise that homophobia exists on the left.

I’m convinced that the more extreme left and extreme right you go, the more difficult it becomes to distinguish one side from the other.

by Anonymousreply 19July 10, 2022 8:22 PM

Whatever underlying problems there are with the National Post (and it sounds like there could be many), the fact remains that Johnson and Rivera were not present when the Stonewall Riots began, and therefore neither one of them “threw the first brick.” The author is correct that perpetuating this ludicrous narrative serves no useful purpose, and only undercuts and devalues the work of a diverse group of many people over the course of decades of activism both before and after the riots. Johnson and Rivera made contributions to the LGBTQ movement, they just didn’t make this particular contribution.

Gay men and lesbians are NOT going to be erased from our own history.

I see the political spectrum as horseshoe shaped rather than linear.

by Anonymousreply 21July 10, 2022 9:30 PM

In the end, the main difference is that the extreme right wants to worship the wealthy (as long as they play along) and the extreme left wants to destroy them.

Gay & Lesbian erasure is the goal. The whole community being discredited as psychopaths is what they want, and the TQIA+ will accomplish that.

by Anonymousreply 25June 4, 2023 3:44 PM

Funny, how they want to tell everyone who to find attractive, but they never want to fuck each other. It’s always some fugly obese pig screeching about how primetime Brad Pitt better fuck zae/zim or fae/fir NOW!!!

by Anonymousreply 26June 4, 2023 3:46 PM

[quote]WTF is National Post? So irrelevant. I ignore fringe media.

The National Post is a major conservative newspaper in Canada, so it's not exactly "fringe" but I don't think anyone reads it outside Canada.

"Because woke homophobia hasn’t been formally studied" - So utter drivel comprised of pure bullshit then? Got it, thanks, so just a troll article posted by a troll.

R29 That's nothing. This whole weird thread is comical. "A few people on twitter are calling themselves trans men while completely looking like women, no T, nothing masculine at all, being happy with their birth body, and literally one's literally a pornstar whose pinned tweet on their NSFW account is them having PIV sex--with them recieving--completely looking like a woman."

These women, who call themselves gay men, are offended by other women calling themselves gay men...

I don’t have a problem with true, actual Trans, it is the psychotic fugly straight people who are co-opting it to get sex or avoid it all together, and the LGBs who do it for woke points.

by Anonymousreply 32June 4, 2023 5:22 PM

Homophobia and antisemitism are hallmarks of the left.

by Anonymousreply 33June 4, 2023 5:41 PM

I was told that I had a genital fetish because I didn’t want to fuck a “man” with a vagina.

by Anonymousreply 34June 4, 2023 5:42 PM

R34 probably by someone who wouldn’t fuck a vagina

by Anonymousreply 35June 4, 2023 5:45 PM

Comment from the Reddit thread at R31: "I knew a cis guy who was the equivalent of this before and he was intolerable. He was misogynistic as hell, presented no differently than most of the men in the scene and I can't help but feel like he claimed NB just to try to dodge criticism for his behavior sadly."

These people are really surprised by straight men doing what straight men have done for thousands of years? I don't want to hear them whining about how they weren't warned, because they were warned and warned and WARNED.

by Anonymousreply 36June 4, 2023 5:46 PM

It is striking how strongly current trans rhetoric aligns with far-right views of masculinity and femininity.

by Anonymousreply 37June 4, 2023 5:53 PM

What is really scary about the movement is that it shows that you can really brainwash people into believing anything and picking up on any kind of ideology and spouting it out.

by Anonymousreply 38June 4, 2023 6:02 PM

Woke liberals are the ones who fought for gay marriage and gays in the military

99% of homophobia is coming from Republicans like OP and the other deplorables posting in this thread

75% of gays are Dem. Because it's conservatives who are the real homophobes. Most Republicans voted against codifying gay marriage
