Viola Davis posts a 19th century 'Slave Sale' pic

The image she posted has clearly been typed up with a computer font and is not even from the 19th century, so it's basically another case of Black torture porn intentionally designed to trigger people. Does Viola Davis actually think Black people need to see things like this, especially given her own privileged existence?

A friend of mine has been going through his mom's old paperwork and found a will from some great great grandparent or uncle. The will stated that a mother slave and her two daughters were to be split among three family members. So, this guy dies and these women are permanently separated. Sounds about right. We were a little shocked to see it. He never really thought of his family being slave holders.

by Anonymousreply 1June 23, 2022 11:15 AM

Has she no shame?

by Anonymousreply 2June 23, 2022 11:18 AM

There's a difference between not forgetting the past and using it as a heel to grind into people's faces. People want to feel inspired about their culture's future, and not have somebody like her with all the advantages in life picking at their wounds and making sure they never heal. Call me cynical, but that's how I see it.

by Anonymousreply 3June 23, 2022 11:22 AM

She's losing it.

by Anonymousreply 4June 23, 2022 11:23 AM

She only won a fucking Emmy, not cured the world of racism!

by Anonymousreply 5June 23, 2022 11:35 AM

She's always been a dickhead. Remember when she said it was God's plan for her to win a Tony?

by Anonymousreply 6June 23, 2022 11:41 AM

Why use a fabricated poster when there are many thousands of images of the genuine thing, more compelling in that they are authentic, no less horrific in their matter-of-fact gritty details, and aboveall teh real thing?

"Thursday, 10AM the12th of April1848" was in fact a Tuesday.

The convention of 10AM was not in common use at the time; it would have been "10 o'clock" or "10 o'clock a.m.." (usually lower case) . The a.m. and p.m. notations were used often but probably 50% or less); a.m. and p.m. were used more to add an air of importance as there was no question that the hour would have been a daylight hour.

The way the slaves are listed is peculiar among broadsides of slave auctions. Age and sex and specialty skills determined the value of slaves at auction. To ignore the age of slaves...I don't think I've ever seen that in any poster, only in a two- or three-line newspaper advertisement of the period. Any time slaves are listed by groups of men and women with this skill or that, the ages are given. To not print the ages would be to imply that they were all old and infirm and health and youth were paramount.

All of that "chopp'n, bale'n, plow'n" and "bud'n out" is wrong for the period. People might have pronounced those words that way, but an auction house, not even a slave auction house (slave traders were not society people and were looked down upon as a lowly and disreputabe and sometimes dangerous class of white, they would not have flaunted English for effect.) It's easy to guess what the term "bud'n out" term was meant to evoke, but I have not seen that term in connection with slave auctions — others no less suggestive and offensive, yes, but not that one.

There were of auction houses that traded in slaves in Charleston. I don't know of one called O'Donald's, and could find anything but references also refuting the "facts" of the fabricated poster. Likewise "bud'n out" (and varitaions) generates a small number of Google hits, but every one in connection to the fabricated poster. Why not just a real term or turn of phrase found among genuine slave auction records with a clearer and more offensive meaning to illustrate how horrific slavery was?

I say lay bare every fact about slavery, but let the facts speak for themselves speak for themselves. They are stronger and more horrifying than reworking them, getting the details wrong, saying it's teh real thing, and telling people exactly how they should react. Let people react honestly to the truth. There is no more powerful message. This is just shit because someone went to trouble to fabricate something, when a real example, no less gruesome and startling, could have been found with great ease. There are thousands of broadsides, posters, and advertisements, and I would say that most are more horrifying than this fake poster.

At link are some Charleston slave auction broadsides from the 1850s.

I've seen that poster before, because I remember looking up what bud n' out means.

by Anonymousreply 8June 23, 2022 12:46 PM

If I had to guess, I'd say it's from a book from the 1970s or 1980s. That is Times New Roman, but looks like the printed version, not the Windows or Word version. The phrasing, mostly the use of words like "pick'n," make me think this originated as part of a story, or as an illustration.

The original post came from this Twitter user, and Viola just reposted it. She needs to hire a social media person to prevent these things from happening again.

Newspaper articles with slave sales had a similar font, but they would not have left so much white space, nor would they have used words like "pick'n."

r3, I agree with you, but right now our culture celebrates -- even fetishizes -- victims.

by Anonymousreply 11June 23, 2022 1:22 PM

Why has no one posted the trailer to Viola's African warrior film? I've never seen anything more ridiculous in my life.

Do you also believe that successful Jews should not post messages about the Holocaust? Should anyone who is successful be banned from posting messages about the struggles of their ancestors? Is that also "picking" at "wounds."

Bitter white supremacists take this type of position only with black people. Because you failed at life. You simply cannot stand that fact that people who you view as inferior have more than you. Cynical? You're just an entitled white supremacist moron, with a gigantic chip on your shoulder.

Its not your place to lecture Davis or any other black person about how they should feel about their ancestors.

The movie is based upon a true story. Your illiteracy is ridiculous.

Why delve into the past at all?

Why do people like her totally ignore the slave trade still happening today?

Could it be because "brown people' are behind it?

[quote] Do you also believe that successful Jews should not post messages about the Holocaust?

I’ll answer for you: of course they don’t believe that. In fact, the Holocaust is constantly peddled as justification for apartheid, land theft, and the steady, year-by-year destruction of another people.

Whereas reminders of slavery in the USA are not for purposes of genocide or repression or conquest. They’re reminders that the US continues to be a very unequal society, 157 years after the end of the civil war.

by Anonymousreply 16July 7, 2022 4:32 AM

[quote]They’re reminders that the US continues to be a very unequal society

Please tell us: what societies are exemplars of equality?

What country has done more to advance the welfare of those of African descent?

Why are black and brown people from all over the world clamoring to live in this unequal racist society?

Do tell.

by Anonymousreply 17July 7, 2022 4:41 AM

Free shit.

by Anonymousreply 18July 7, 2022 4:42 AM

R16 There has never been an independent nation called “Palestine.” Jews have maintained a presence in their land for nearly 4,000 years.

After the Holocaust Jews continued to be murdered when they returned to their homes which had been taken over by the local populace. It didn’t end after the Holocaust.

Have you been to Israel? There is no “apartheid.” Arab citizens have citizenship rights including the right to vote. There are Arabs in the Knesset and an Arab citizen has served on the Supreme Court of the land. Arab citizens are not required to serve in the military while Jewish citizens are obligated. Is it perfect? No. Is there discrimination and distrust? Yes.

How many Jews live in Egypt? Iran? Iraq? Saudi Arabia? How many Jews serve in those governments? Jews have been ethnically cleansed from those lands and/or not allowed there.

Change may be coming.

If there are no Trans Women of Color on the slave poster you know it's fake because they threw the first bale of cotton thus giving plantations their rights.

Everybody knows that.

by Anonymousreply 20July 7, 2022 6:50 AM

She feeds off on white guilt it keeps her alive.

by Anonymousreply 21July 7, 2022 6:54 AM

r13 actually you're the one who wants to make black people feel like shit by constantly traumatizing them with your torture born. You are despicable.

by Anonymousreply 22July 7, 2022 11:38 AM

Reply 21 is correct. She is a white guilt vampire.

by Anonymousreply 23July 8, 2022 1:07 AM

Ugh. I can't stand Viola. She has not only become insufferable but unwatchable and unlistenable.

by Anonymousreply 24July 8, 2022 1:17 AM

Her initials are Venereal Disease

by Anonymousreply 25July 8, 2022 1:26 AM

What an ignorant comment.

by Anonymousreply 26July 8, 2022 1:43 AM

OP is probably a rich Republican living a privileged existence

Viola was born poor, you were probably born rich like your idol Donald Trump

You're just looking for an excuse to hate black people

by Anonymousreply 27July 8, 2022 1:45 AM

Is she trying to incite violence?

by Anonymousreply 28July 8, 2022 1:48 AM

She's a baitor. A white guilt, vampire,gas lighter.

by Anonymousreply 29July 8, 2022 1:51 AM

Is the sale still going on? I’m looking for some great deals on Christmas gifts this year. This inflation has been terrible for all of us white people.

by Anonymousreply 30July 8, 2022 1:55 AM

My great granddaddy said there are two things you should never sell to a friend, a car or a slave. Cause if either one quits working you’ll never hear the end of it.

by Anonymousreply 31July 8, 2022 5:42 PM

As long as she also post picks of the Africans selling their own to the white man, I'm fine with it

by Anonymousreply 32July 8, 2022 5:46 PM

[quote]As long as she also post picks of the Africans selling their own to the white man, I'm fine with it

She won't, because she's blaming the white man for the Africans taking part in the slave trade and selling other Africans to white people.

by Anonymousreply 33July 8, 2022 5:51 PM

My multi great grandfather came over in the 1700s as an indentured servant. His servitude was supposed to only last 5 years. It lasted 12 . The story goes he could neither read nor write, and was on a very rural plantation in Maryland ,as well as only being 13 .So when they told him "Your contract isnt up yet" he had no choice but to believe them.We dont know how he finally broke free, but ended up in Ga where he started our family line. My point is that slavery had many forms in the 18th-19th century.Should his descendants sue the family of the original owners for something that happened 300 years ago ? Can we use that as an excuse why we arent better off ? What about all the Chinese they imported to build the railroad? They killed 10s of 1000s,often wouldnt pay them and when they were done shipped many of them back to China without a cent. Another form of slavery. Lots of people have a right to resent the white establishment, including other whites.

by Anonymousreply 34July 8, 2022 6:16 PM

Can't believe I used to like her, back when she was an actress and I didn't know shit about her.

by Anonymousreply 35July 8, 2022 6:53 PM

25 is right, this bitch is VD. She's a racist scab.

by Anonymousreply 36July 9, 2022 8:35 AM

R17, things were largely equal during a period known as Year Zero in Cambodia back in the day.

Everyone is equal when you have nothing or are in the grave.

by Anonymousreply 37July 9, 2022 8:52 AM

[quote]The movie is based upon a true story. Your illiteracy is ridiculous.

R13, it's not "illiteracy" to be unaware of something. "Historical illiteracy", maybe. For an example of good old-fashioned illiteracy, we turn to you:

[quote]Its not your place to lecture Davis

Plus, what you're saying doesn't hold true. Holocaust survivors and their descendants don't blame that for any problems they may have today, as far as I can tell, though it must be said that the two situations are not analogous (e.g. duration).

by Anonymousreply 38July 9, 2022 9:05 AM

She's a SEXUAL baitor. A white guilt, SEXUAL vampire, gas lighter.

Fixed it for you.

by Anonymousreply 39July 19, 2022 12:13 PM

I took a peek at the LSA Ricky Martin threads. God, you complain a lot on DL about white Karens, but are some of the black bitches there nasty! You should see claim that it is in Latino culture to practice incest, what a projection, since almost every black female celebrity revealed to be abused as child by family members. I remember watching Oprah show where Oprah and some other black women were discussing how they were hoping that the whites don't know about it. Not to mention The color of purple that was written before wokeism.

And of course, when someone mentioned Michael Jackson, what an avalanche of denial. Even though it is silly to compare Martin who allegedly had affair with 20 yo nephew with a sick pedophile raping 10 yo kids.

by Anonymousreply 40July 19, 2022 12:36 PM

You know who really has a big chip on their shoulder? People like R13 who think animal cruelty is hilarious but don’t you DARE criticize a black celebrity!

[quote] There's a difference between not forgetting the past and using it as a heel to grind into people's faces.

If anything needs to be ground in people's faces, it's the horrors of slavery actually

by Anonymousreply 42July 19, 2022 1:01 PM

worse to be s slave than a native american indian??

by Anonymousreply 43July 19, 2022 1:04 PM

She is not losing it. She is making people aware of slavery and the basis for the continued racism in our nation. I think you are either dumb as a rock OP or a troll.

by Anonymousreply 44July 19, 2022 1:05 PM

[quote]Its not your place to lecture Davis or any other black person about how they should feel about their ancestors.

The irony is that both slaves and slave owners are ancestors of black Americans. A very small percentage of white people’s ancestors held slaves, but most blacks have the blood of slave owners as average African American has 20% of European DNA, lighter ones much more from the white men on the plantation. So, if you want to put the blame on descendants of the slave owners you would get a real mess.

by Anonymousreply 45July 19, 2022 1:05 PM

The poster she shared on her social media is not a real, original slave sale poster, and I understand that.

However, people are acting as though she's lying, did something shameful, and is a "dickhead" for even mentioning slavery. No one is merely irritated that she didn't realize it was a genuine historical artifact. Instead, they're calling her a liar, shameful, a dickhead, mentally ill, and I see someone is also doing that grotesque thing where they pretend that, because Africans sold other Africans into slavery, whites weren't really evil for participating.

This thread is a really good example of how ugly Dataloungers are these days. Most people on this forum are rotten to the core.

by Anonymousreply 46July 19, 2022 1:13 PM

It’s 2022 slavery ended let’s focus on the Shit storm of today. Both sides are assholes. It’s people trying to get money for their ancestors that pisses me off. They didn’t suffer so stop trying to make a buck off someone you never even mets suffering. Do better and stop the cycle of free shit because of your race.

by Anonymousreply 47July 19, 2022 1:32 PM

r47

She thinks white people need to see things like this.

by Anonymousreply 48July 19, 2022 1:34 PM

OOOps I meant OP.

by Anonymousreply 49July 19, 2022 1:35 PM

Another example of blacks wanting constant attention/validation for their BOTTOMLESS well of grievances.

by Anonymousreply 50July 19, 2022 1:36 PM

Thank you r46

I wish the owners would just turn the site into something else. Many of us come back here out of habit and nostalgia from the better days but it really is a cesspool of racist hate and misogyny.

by Anonymousreply 51July 19, 2022 1:39 PM

R48 fuck her and what she thinks whites need to see. How about she donate her millions to her “people” and stop assuming whites need to care about HER thoughts. They’re constantly finding ways to create racial divides. Calling it “Black Twitter” is one of these things. It’s goddam TWITTER. It’s not a racial platform. Is there White Twitter? Asian Twitter? Seriously, it’s overboard with the BLM shit to the point they’re making people feel anger. She is a race baiter. She’s not a queen she’s an actor who loves to make everyone remember whites once enslaved blacks. Yes a century ago you dumb cunt. How about today? Let’s focus on doing better today and stopping using race about everything.

by Anonymousreply 52July 19, 2022 1:40 PM

Yes r50 there are a bottomless well of grievances as the white man has a bottomless well of hate, brutality, violence and depravity.

And you are a shining example, BRAVO!

by Anonymousreply 53July 19, 2022 1:41 PM

r52 if you didn't care you would have gone right past it and continued over to your Q sites.

Yet here you are bitching and moaning about something you don't care about.

by Anonymousreply 54July 19, 2022 1:43 PM

[quote]They’re constantly finding ways to create racial divides.

Oh, those tricksy Negroes!

[quote]Calling it “Black Twitter” is one of these things. It’s goddam TWITTER. It’s not a racial platform. Is there White Twitter? Asian Twitter?

Yes, you fucking moron. There's Gay Twitter, too, but you're not gay, are you?

[quote]she’s an actor who loves to make everyone remember whites once enslaved blacks. Yes a century ago you dumb cunt.

If you think slavery was still legal in 1922, then you're the dumb cunt, you dumb cunt.

by Anonymousreply 55July 19, 2022 1:57 PM

I stand with Viola on this. Let's not forget ANY of our ugly history, nor Europe's ugly history. People who claim this is torture or suffering porn all too clearly don't want to be reminded of what was and could be again (the way the Supreme Court is headed) if we are not vigilant. If it's a fake poster, that is unfortunate because (as someone above pointed out), the reality was worse.

by Anonymousreply 56July 19, 2022 1:58 PM

It’s disgusting what’s going on in Libya, r14. I remember watching a news documentary which showed black migrants being tortured and the women and girls being gang raped. They also send videos of this happening to the relatives of the migrants for ransom money.

The Libyans (and Arabs in general) are incredible racist against blacks, but for some reason nothing is being done about it.

by Anonymousreply 57July 19, 2022 1:59 PM

Arabs are racists, but black women are not the only ones being raped there. It is a misogynist culture with lots of violence against women.

by Anonymousreply 58July 19, 2022 2:09 PM

Serious question.. In history, were there ever any White slaves? If necessary, I could do some light cleaning, run errands and make a great martini. But, that's about it.

by Anonymousreply 59July 19, 2022 2:11 PM

Of course there were white slaves, there was so much slavery in the Old World, whole economies were built on it.

by Anonymousreply 60July 19, 2022 2:22 PM

[quote] worse to be s slave than a native american indian??

Yes, let's pit minority against minority to see who gets to claim to have had it worse

by Anonymousreply 61July 19, 2022 3:33 PM

[quote] The Libyans (and Arabs in general) are incredible racist against blacks, but for some reason nothing is being done about it.

What do you expect people to do when, even in the US, people are making excuses for slavery

by Anonymousreply 62July 19, 2022 3:34 PM

Africans are still being sold into slavery. Today. In the year 2022. Now THAT is a real issue.

Not the broken record whining about shit that happened 150 years ago.

We know. We get it. We've heard all about it.

We have sufficient.
