I just rewatched Carrie and thought Spacek was just so specular that I looked up her filmography. Many said "Cole Miners Daughter" was the best biopic ever made. From there I did a deep dive and her competition for the Oscars was insane the year that she won. Beth Jarret was a contender. Was Sissy's performance that good? I watched it last night and it was no Bohemany Rhapsody. I didn't think it was that stellar, but I do like Spacek. She seems completely separate from Hollywood, yet had received multiple Oscar nomination. WHET ever happened to her?

Delete your account. Your opinion sucks and you can't spellcheck worth shit.

She did her own singing and looked and sounded amazingly like Loretta Lynn.
The film is good but I still think Carrie is her best performance (and film.)
She's still working. Shows up on TV a lot.

Who the fuck cares about spelling errors. DL is so easily derailed.

Didn't she pause her career for yeaaars to raise her kids on a Virginia farm? I wonder her career trajectory would have been like had she continued in HW.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 23, 2022 7:41 AM |
She worked steadily thru the 80s in major films. Then she turned 40 and things tend to slow down then for actresses not named Meryl.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 23, 2022 7:44 AM |
It seemed like she was nomynatid for an Oscur ervy otter year in the ateies.

Not only did you misspell "coal," you said "it was no Bohemian Rhapsody." How are we supposed to take you seriously, OP?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 23, 2022 7:56 AM |
The first name, ‘Cole’ must be gaining in popularity.
Didn't know so many watched ‘The Affair’.

Very talented actress—Carrie is my favorite movie of all time—who was never interested in playing The Hollywood Game. Lives on a farm in Virginia with her husband Jack Fiske, who art directed Badlands and Days of Heaven, among others.
Mr. Blackwell was a big fan. During her late 70s/early 80s peak on a post-Oscars local L.A. morning show, he praised her talent and gave her a pass re her wardrobe, stating "she's just not into fashion."

R2, Spacek is Night Sky, not Dark Skies.
... in case anybody was looking for it.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 23, 2022 8:54 AM |
Oh, wait. Maybe R2 was mocking OP. Well, anyway, it's Night Sky. Is it any good?
Spacek was good in Bloodline, but the cast in the first season was so great overall, she didn't really stand out. I've forgotten the second and third seasons because they were forgettable, but she was probably OK in those, too. She's a good actress.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 23, 2022 8:58 AM |
I loved CMD - after she hits the big time & goes on tour, the movie really illustrates the drudgery & monotony of the road. And the pressure on her, not just to support her husband & family, but now this whole entourage that depended on her. The movie doesn't make her out to be a saint, but her story is still compelling. I'd never given much thought to her LL prior to that.
But back to Sissy, she is a great actress, but I think she only fits a certain type of roles, if that makes sense. Plus, like LL, she always seemed like a country girl at heart & didn't want to play the game. But she's been in various small roles over the years & she elevates whatever she's in
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 23, 2022 8:59 AM |
I think OP meant Natalie Cole.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 23, 2022 9:04 AM |
R15 Jack Fisk not Fiske.
Like the gay porn star from the late 70s/early 80s. Dick Fisk (no e at the end).

r27 "'night, mother" too
Though I find many younger fraus hate her in that role, exclaiming she was too skinny, young, and pretty for the role, but then their favored films of hers are either Carrie or Trading Mom. Which otherwise devalues their opinion of saying anything, really.

The Straight Story. She's heartbreaking and genuine. And most actors couldn't have done that role without giving an affected performance.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 23, 2022 11:40 AM |
Her best movie is Robert Altman's "3 Women."
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 23, 2022 11:41 AM |
She’s excellent in Coal Miner’s Daughter.
It’s too bad she’s a total cunt. I know someone who worked on that show she’s in now with JK Simmons who said she was a terror. Every single person on the cast and crew (Simmons included) absolutely hated her guts and avoided her whenever possible.

She's a friend-of-a-friend. She's the most down to Earth person you could meet. Spends most of her time as a mom and grandmother these days.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | June 23, 2022 12:30 PM |
OP, please. She had NO competition. From the moment CMD opened in the spring of that year - the Oscar was HERS. And deservedly so.
“No Bohemian Rhapsody”?! Da fuq?! Sissy set the STANDARD against every musical bio pic is measured. She did her own singing! To my mind, she’s the ONLY actor to have set the performance standard in not one but TWO film genres: musical bio pic (possibly equalled but never surpassed) and horror (by a mile! no one else even comes close).
So, fuck off, OP. Plus she married the handsome and talented Jack Fisk. Go fuck yourself, OP. ITS CARRIE! (Ashtray flies off the desk and creases OP’s scalp.)

I was going to single out a few films mentioned in R27. She played the sour domineering sister of Piper Laurie in "The Grass Harp", and would have been right in Laurie's role as well. She also was better than Keaton and Lange in "Crimes of the Heart". She was the driving force of that film's plot so anything that the other two sisters did hailed in comparison. "The Long Walk Home" was very good too. It should have gotten more attention when it came out. Her role in "The Help" seems to be a follow-up to her character from that.
I would also mention "Tuck Everlasting" which I saw after seeing the musical. Mae Tuck was my favorite character in that movie/Broadway show. She took the typical loving mother role and made something special of it, as did Carolee Carmello on Broadway..

Bohemian Rhapsody?! What a joke. The Live Aid scene was very well done but the rest was garbage. Coal Miner's Daughter was excellent and so was Sissy. Tommy Lee Jones gave a hell of a performance too. He was kinda hunky but those acne scars? Yikes!
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 23, 2022 2:38 PM |
The Live Aid scene in BoRhap looked like a PS4 game. Like shit. If only looks good if you compare it to the I’m Still Standing recreation in the worse in every way Rocketman.

Coal Miner's Daughter made $67M+ in 1980 at the domestic box office; adjusted for inflation, that's about $250M, which is more than what Bohemian Rhapsody made at the domestic box office ($216M) -- unsurprisingly, Bohemian Rhapsody was a far bigger hit internationally than Coal Miner's Daughter.

Those are the stories I've heard about Sissy - unpretentious and friendly. Most of what I've heard about Sissy comes from a friend who developed an acquaintance with Sissy and her family through a business relationship over several years.
Who knows what was actually happening on that one set?

Can we give a shout out to Tommy Lee Jones being a brooding piece of ass?
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 23, 2022 4:36 PM |
I forgot about "In the Bedroom"; she was excellent in that movie - the scene where she lays into Marisa Tomei's character (who really wasn't at fault) was brutal as was the scene when she & the husband just tear into each other.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | June 23, 2022 4:45 PM |
R50, 'In the Bedroom' is a wonderful film and Spacek is outstanding in it. Very few actresses would choose to underplay the moments she did, and I felt the character was all the more intriguing as a result. She nearly swept the Best Actress awards that year, and I do wish she had taken home her second Oscar -- her scene with the priest alone was enough to warrant it, but she's fantastic all the way through.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | June 23, 2022 6:48 PM |
She was a s*** in violets are blue.

Coal Miner’s Daughter led to a renewed interest in Patsy Cline. Beverly D’Angelo was excellent as Patsy (I think she did her own singing as well) and they should have let her recreate the role in the Cline biopic, Sweet Dreams. But alas, we got the miscast Jessica Lange.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | June 23, 2022 9:02 PM |
