2011 Tokyo Airport Earthquake

Do earthquakes usually last this long?

I've never been in a major earthquake, so I'm not too familiar with them.

But in a place where this is a common occurrence, most of the people seemed genuinely scared.

Was this a big one?

How long did it last?

I've been in earthquakes in Japan. They last around two minutes unless the earthquake awakens Godzilla. If it does, then all bets are off. The mayhem can last one or even two hours.

That's helluva long time. Max Ive experienced was about 30 seconds, a little over Richter 6. Not counting the aftershocks. I felt nauseous for hours afterwards.

I have been in more than my fair share of major earthquakes.

2001: The 6.8 Nisqually quake in Washington State. That one rocked the top of the Starbucks headquarters!

1999: The 5.9 Satsop Quake in Washington State. Blew out the picture window in the living room.

1999: 7.6 Izmit quake in Turkey, We were back visiting family for my Dad's birthday.

1999 7.2 Duzce quake in Turkey, I was not ear the epicenter of that one, but we sure felt it! The Izmit quake a month or so before did a lot of damage, and building codes being what they are in that part of the world something like 16,000 people were killed.

1989 The 6.9 San Francisco quake during the world series

None lasted longer than 40 seconds, but when your in one that big and your Aunt screams "hizli dısari!!!" (quick outside) it feels like time stands still. 1999 was a bad year for earthquakes it seems.
