Was Carol Wayne murdered?

Somehow she ended-up dead in shallow water, fully clothed.

Surely she would have floated.

Who tf

by Anonymousreply 2June 22, 2022 5:32 AM

Yet another innocent female victim of Johnny Carson's casting couch, used then cast aside.

Just like Joan Rivers.

Wow I remember her. I didn’t know she died in 1985 and in such a mysterious manner.

by Anonymousreply 4June 22, 2022 6:09 AM

I remember the day or a few days after she died they still ran a rerun with her. She joked about swimming/floating too. I'm a little vague on it all but I remember it happening.

After losing the Carson gig she was really hard up for money. She was escorting though I don't know if the guy who left her for dead was a john. He was also involved with Art Linkletter's daughter's death.

Somewhere or other I saw nobody would claim her body so ultimately Pat McCormick (from Smokey and the Bandit) paid to bring her home for burial.

Why'd Carson fire her?

by Anonymousreply 7June 22, 2022 8:15 AM

I remember her from Celebrity Sweepstakes. Despite the dumb blonde act she was actually quite smart and was the go to celeb people would pick to win.

We had a thread on Carol Wayne a few years ago, and I remember reading that the person with Diane Linkletter when she died in 1969 was the same person Carol Wayne was staying at the hotel with, when she died. It's a guy named Edward Durston, and no one is sure if it's the shlock-movie director, or a used car salesman with a similar name. Strange story.

Carson didn’t fire her. His show was cut from 90 minutes to 60 minutes (which he wanted). The shortened running time meant fewer appearances for Wayne in these kinds of skits.

Her brother, Bruce, should pour his billion$ into finding out what really happened.

by Anonymousreply 11June 22, 2022 11:46 AM

Carol Wayne would've been 82 today - born September 6, 1942.

by Anonymousreply 12September 6, 2024 11:24 PM

What's the only Wayne that doesn't float?

by Anonymousreply 13September 6, 2024 11:27 PM

Johnny Carson killed her.

One of my favourite skits from the Carson show was this Art Fern sketch (Wayne always played his ditzy assistant who Fern makes salacious jokes about). The skit starts tanking with the audience not responding as Carson hoped. Johnny was always funniest in situations like this. Anyway, towards the end, he’s so exasperated he gets down behind the counter and refuses to come back up. Watch what happens.

R15. How offensive!

I’d forgotten the site TV Party had even existed.

Carol, and here sister Nina, are fascinating characters.

Their mother, a former ballerina, enrolled them in ballet classes as toddlers and a few years later enrolled them in ice skating lessons based on a belief that the polio virus, which was increasing in case numbers at the time, couldn’t exsist in the cold of the rink. From then until their early teens, they practiced ice skating eight hours a day.

At 15 and 16, Carol and Nina, were hired by The Icecapades. They dropped out of school and toured with the show for over three years until Carol had a serious accident on the ice after hitting a coin that an audience member had thrown onto the ice. It ended her career, and the double act she and Nina did together.

With little to no education, the girls moved to Las Vegas and worked as dancers at the Folies Bergere. Through the dancing gigs, Nina was scouted by a acting agent and started a career in film and television with Carol joining her shortly thereafter.

During their main acting years the sisters were both married several times. Nina was married to, and had a daughter with, John Barrymore. Carol’s second marriage was to a successful music photographer, concert filmmaker, and former husband of Mary Travers of Peter, Paul, and Mary, Barry Feinstein, with whom she had a son, Alex.

After four years they divorced and Carol married Burt Sugarman, producer of Midnight Special and current husband of Mary Hart of Entertainment Tonight fame.

Life went sideways, in 1980 with the divorce from Sugarman. Her Tonight Show gig ended and the roles dried up. Alcohol, prescription pills, and cocaine addiction soon followed. By 1984 she was posing for Playboy, rumored to be escorting with wealthy men, and friends were trying to convince her to go to rehab. Richard Pryor offered her a role in his next film if she would go to rehab, at his expense.

Whether to have one last blowout before rehab or to try and quit on her own, Wayne went to Mexico for a week with Edward Durston, used car salesman, B-movie maker, and gay porn producer, where she died mysteriously.

The circumstances surrounding the when and how and possibly whom of her death were never fully investigated. Her body was quickly cremated by the Mexican authorities and the case closed after being ruled an accident. Her friends, and even the American Consulate, did not believe she slipped and fell into the ocean and drowned.

Here is the last appearance she made with Carson, exactly one year before her death, to promote her Playboy spread. She is obviously not herself and veers into the bizarre by the end.
