If Michael had held on a few more years he would have died as a woman

People forget he was the first black superstar. In the early 80s. Before hiphop. Before rap. There wasn't the acceptance everywhere there is today. I think he felt very vulnerable and different.
So he befriended white people; married two of them; and had white kids. And did things to his face and skin to be more accepted. He also wanted to be in movies, and the stars at the time were Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, etc.

All his surgery and “beauty standards” were very old Hollywood. Like his cleft chin implant.
I remember the original bad cover was inspired by an old photo of Theda Bara who had lace over her face so he was definitely into old Hollywood.
I remember reading in a biography he used pancake makeup which I think was outdated in the 80’s.
I honestly don’t think he’s had as much surgery as people think. Of course he did his nose and something with his lips but I think a lot of it is the fact that he was severely underweight.
He was 5’9 and 132 pounds when he died. He had probably been 125-130 throughout the 80’s and 90’s which is why his cheeks and jaws were so pointed. I don’t think he worked on those.
I think he touched his eyes though.

I didn’t realize the surgery got extreme so quickly. He looked ghoulish by 30

He used to haunt secondhand bookshops. Visited one near me. Possibly looking for more copies of those boy coffee table books of the 70s (one ran into I believe14 editions such was the demand) , but also old Hollywood stuff.

He should have stopped after the first nose job.

Shame. He was a very handsome young man before all the surgery. Beautiful eyes and smile.

It's sad he died so young, I wanted a longer video to see what would happen next

They should have done the last transition into a skeleton.

He started going off the rails at 25.

R13 is why I still come to DL.

Reading the Darwin Porter bio now. Mike has just befriended Liz, and he's still a black man. He was all about the photo op and who was big enough to be seen with. QEII wasn't having it.

That video was like an M. Night Shyamalan movie. It starts off all normal and innocuous, but ends in a disturbing twist you weren't expecting.

I'd say more David Cronenberg (also - you knew what was coming)

Sad mental illness and justifiable self hatred.
That video where Stallone talks about his painting of Jackson as a psychopathic clown comes to mind.

That’s ignorant don’t be ignorant.

When did he get his first and second nose jobs?

Remember the MTV video for the song Black and White--the one with the face morphing from black to white, male to female? Ironically, his face ended up doing that.

I remember when I was 5 and thrilled came out I thought he was very cool. Five years later I thought he was a complete freak and laughed at him.
