An Officer and a Gentleman

Why did Richard Gere and Debra Winger hate each other? Is it because they're both closet cases?

To be honest, Gere had better chemistry with his male best friend played by David Keith, than he had with Winger.

Hell, he even had better chemistry with Louis Gossett Jr., than he had with Winger.

I just watched this movie the other day, and Richard Gere had me in tears when the Drill Sergeant was trying to get him to drop out of the program, and he started crying and said "I got nowhere else to go!!!!"

😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

by Anonymousreply 2June 19, 2022 9:59 PM

OP Don't agree with your assessment. It seems that Winger and Gere had the right chemistry and that was what made the film such a huge hit at the time.

by Anonymousreply 3June 19, 2022 10:13 PM

But did they hate each other in real life, R3?

by Anonymousreply 4June 19, 2022 10:21 PM

I had no idea that David Keith was still so busy acting in both movies and on television.

What a surprise.

The way that Mayo treated Paula was a bit troubling.

He was kind of abusive and treated her like shit.

Can you imagine what their marriage was like?? Lol.

by Anonymousreply 6June 19, 2022 10:40 PM

Was there ever a movie where Debra Winger was happy?

by Anonymousreply 7June 19, 2022 10:44 PM

I thought Paula was a sucker, but I understood. Mayo was hot af. Also thought that she should have tried a little harder to class it up and not climb into bed with Mayo so quickly. Someone should have given her a copy of ā€œThe Rulesā€.

That blonde was such a nasty little slut, I don’t know why they were friends.

by Anonymousreply 8June 19, 2022 10:48 PM

Easy. Debra is crazy, Richard is a self-important jerk.

by Anonymousreply 9June 19, 2022 10:49 PM

Debra winger fought with most of her co-stars

by Anonymousreply 10June 19, 2022 10:57 PM

I will try again

Well, R4 who did Winger get along with? It's called acting and both of them were very good in AOAAG

by Anonymousreply 12June 19, 2022 11:09 PM

This movie was HUUUUGE back in the day, between the song that played constantly on the radio and the final scene that was iconic for about a decade after (though, now you never see it referenced), as it turned out it was arguably the peak of both of their careers (Winger had Terms a year later and Gere had Pretty Woman, I guess).

David Keith was so hot back then.

I just did, actually. Can’t remember where, but I’ll think of it in a minute. It was kind of surprising, I didn’t think young people knew it.

R11- In one of the recent photos of Debra Winger she looks a LOT like Dr. Melfi from The Sopranos.

by Anonymousreply 16June 20, 2022 1:40 AM

Richard Gere should have won the Best Actor Oscar for this role.

He was fantastic.

When Debra Winger was interviewed by Barbara Walters, she said the illusion of chemistry generated between them during their love scenes was due to her hatred of him.

She's a fine actress, but she's a horrible person. She seems to have some sort of major toxic personality disorder. I have never heard her say anything good about anyone she's worked with, and all she does is complain. She lost her career in Hollywood because no one wants to work with such a grouch who will complain about you publicly to everyone after you work with her.

Now granted, he is no walk in the park himself. He's infamously selfish and narcissistic. But she is really a piece of work.

Rofl that's hilarious!!

Hey, whatever works. I guess.

by Anonymousreply 19June 20, 2022 7:34 AM

no r18 she never said she hated Gere. She said she hated the producers who called her fat and she used that vulnerability in the love scenes.

Gere had admitted to being kind of a jerk in the film to the extent Lou Gossett walked off the set one day because of him.

by Anonymousreply 20June 20, 2022 7:37 AM

Winger had nothing but good things to say about her "Shadowlands" co-star, Anthony Hopkins:

"As for Tony, he's a friend. He has become even more American than I am now and lives permanently in Los Angeles. He loves the place. He's nuts, but he's great. You need more people like that. He does not mind what he says, knows his way around a film set and has such charm and talent that people always like working with him."

by Anonymousreply 21June 20, 2022 7:41 AM

David Keith is a freak.

by Anonymousreply 22June 20, 2022 7:45 AM

Oooh, do tell R22.

How so?

Like sex freak?

by Anonymousreply 23June 20, 2022 7:54 AM

Why did Debra Winger break up with Timothy Hutton?

He seems so mellow. Like he could handle even Debra Winger.

There may have been issues over equitably sharing coke stashes.

[quote] ā€˜An Officer and a Gentleman’ at 40: Richard Gere says he struck Louis Gossett Jr. so hard that actor stormed off set

Richard Gere conducted himself like an officer, but not always a gentleman, on the set of An Officer and a Gentleman, Taylor Hackford's award-winning 1982 military drama released in theaters 40 years ago, on July 28, 1982.

In a 2017 Role Recall interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Gere said he got into arguably the best shape of his life to play Zack Mayo, a trainee at the Navy’s Aviation Officer Candidate School who clashes with his hard-edged Marine Corps drill instructor, Emil Foley (Louis Gossett Jr.).

ā€œWe worked. We were shooting all day. And then I would do an hour or two of karate, also, for the karate sequences in it,ā€ Gere told us (watch clip above, or full Role Recall below).

ā€œSo I was incredible shape. I was in Navy SEALs shape in that one.ā€

Gere may have gotten too tough for his own good — or his co-star’s good, anyway. One of the most infamous tales from the film’s set involves a moment in which Gere struck Gossett so hard in the stomach that the actor abruptly stormed off set and didn’t return for two days.

ā€œI love Lou, but Lou didn’t work as hard as me to learn the karate,ā€ Gere explains. ā€œI got a little frustrated with him once and I actually clocked him in the gut.

ā€œLou walked off. He said, ā€˜I’m done. I’m outta here!ā€™ā€

Gere and Gossett eventually buried the hatchet, and remain friends today.

The latter’s forgiveness paid off, too. Gossett won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his intense portrayal of Foley, becoming the first Black man to win the category.

In his biography An Actor and a Gentleman, Gossett wrote that Gere and co-star Debra Winger (who played Zack’s ā€œtownieā€ love interest, Paula) didn’t get along on set.

But Gere says they had no problem dialing up romantic chemistry.

ā€œWe were just like young animals, then. It was an animal attraction. It was an animal physicality between the two of us.ā€
