Have any of you guys had to leave a cult or cult-like organization?

I am intentionally including "cult-like" or cult light" if you know what I mean.

How did you do it? How old were you? Were you able to create a new life? Was it difficult?

It's not a cult, but it made me soooo in love with my beautiful female wife!

by Anonymousreply 1June 16, 2022 2:46 PM

Yes. It was called high school.

Almost anyone that has worked for a corporation can answer this question.

You'll have to be more specific.

I’ve been at Datalounge for over 20 years. So no I have not left.

by Anonymousreply 4June 16, 2022 3:01 PM

Yes. My family.

I left Christianity and became an atheist.

Plenty of rural gays are selling Paparazzi accessories on Facebook Live. It's a pyramid scheme that shills cheap tin "jewelry" for $5, and they apparently do some targeting of gay men as potential sellers.

There's a topic to explore: Gays and MLMs.

Usually a cult has followers living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian and charismatic leader.

I know that people are trying to be clever but I would not call high school or working for a corporation cults.

R8 Not a corporation. An MLM. They lean heavily on groupthink and psychological manipulation to keep members in line, and encourage members to shun those who question doctrine or leave the group. They have dense literature about their founding, their principles, and how new members WILL achieve a glorious goal if only they do exactly as they're told.

Sounds like a cult to me!

R9 I was referring to R3 MLMs aren't corporations, they're pyramid schemes. They do have similar cult-like tendencies though.

I have family that attend a cult fundie Christian church in the valley. I was never immersed but I attended for a while before I realized what was going on. It is a cult. They demand a certain percentage of your income and have a college also. There has been a lot of scuttlebutt on the news about this place - the leader defied orders to not gather during the pandemic. He eventually won. He's a looney tunes of the worst kind. This leader believes he alone was the "hermeneutical insight" to interpret the Bible, and has his own versions of it. They kick people out of their congregation at public services (should that person choose to show up) if they go against the laws of the church. I attended one evening service where a woman was being ex-communicated for getting a divorce from her cheating husband. She refused to forgive him - kicked out.

Does every thread have to be about politics.

by Anonymousreply 12June 16, 2022 3:27 PM

Corporations are cults. They have belief systems and social systems that you had better fit into. They have a million things that can and can't be said openly. They "shun" and discipline disbelievers or those of wavering adherence, and they regulate your life in and outside of work, trending towards a certain element of isolation from others.

Especially anything involving sales.
