“Stockard Channing in Just Friends (1979) & “The Stockard Channing Show” (1980)- were they not the same show, essentially?

She’s Susan Hughes in one, a newly divorced woman who leaves Boston and moves to LA.

She’s Susan Goodenow in the other, a newly divorced woman who tries to build a life for herself in LA.

I’m confused how they were any different, but are considered two different shows… each lasting one season.

Ron Silver (who was in the latter) looked like a 70s porn star to me and I just know he had a big dick.

Ron Silver turned into a nasty conservative when he hit middle age. And then he died.

by Anonymousreply 1June 16, 2022 4:41 AM

Ron Silver really lost his mind towards the end. Glad he's dead, really.

by Anonymousreply 2June 16, 2022 4:45 AM

Stockard's big mistake was not singing her own theme song.

by Anonymousreply 3June 16, 2022 4:49 AM

Both are stereotypical “comes to L.A. and tries to do her thing” stories. How can you tell them apart?

by Anonymousreply 4June 16, 2022 4:56 AM

Did don't Ellen do essentially the same thing. Also she's fat in the second one.

by Anonymousreply 5June 16, 2022 5:02 AM

I always liked the theme song.

by Anonymousreply 6June 16, 2022 5:47 AM

They were two different shows in two different universes despite having identical premises and locations. Stockard Channing would speak of both shows and two seasons of the same show during interviews, which only confused people more.

by Anonymousreply 7June 16, 2022 9:20 AM

I wanna watch this show

by Anonymousreply 8June 16, 2022 3:42 PM

Anyone ever watch it?

by Anonymousreply 9June 17, 2022 12:21 AM

They released both seasons in a DVD set about 15 years ago. Kitschy, but tough to get through.

by Anonymousreply 10June 18, 2022 12:40 AM

Joan Darling was involved with the first show. Didn’t she sink everything she was involved with? I can see why they kept trying to get something to click for Channing; she seemed to be a natural for television.

by Anonymousreply 11June 19, 2022 2:32 AM

But it never clicked. They were trying to ride off of the Grease mania but it didn’t work.

by Anonymousreply 12June 19, 2022 2:42 AM

They changed her name to let the viewers know it was “Goodenow”.

by Anonymousreply 13June 19, 2022 2:47 AM

I remember being a little gayling, 9 years old, and the biggest "Grease" freak in my neighborhood. I would beg my mother to let me stay up and watch this show because I loved Stockard so much. Even I knew this was a POS.

by Anonymousreply 14June 19, 2022 10:23 AM

I loved Stockard after seeing Grease, too, R14. But I never could talk my mom into letting me stay up to watch her show, and then it was gone

by Anonymousreply 15June 19, 2022 10:38 AM

There are worse things she could do.

by Anonymousreply 16June 19, 2022 11:33 AM

I watched it. All I can remember is that in one of the shows, she had a sneaker as decoration on her mantel.

I think Stockard could have done well with her own show if they had found the right formula. It’s too bad that Murphy Brown hadn’t come along because that’s the type of show Stockard could have done: acerbic boss with well written characters.

Less than a decade before Stockard, they did the same thing with Sandy Duncan. Put her in a show, then the next season tried to retool the entire show.

by Anonymousreply 17June 19, 2022 11:42 AM

I have furiously masturbated to BOTH shows, especially to Just Friends. So much that I have thrown up afterwards.

Stockard, my love…

by Anonymousreply 18June 19, 2022 11:52 AM

Why would anyone name their child Stockard

by Anonymousreply 19June 19, 2022 12:10 PM

They didn’t r19. That was her maiden name. She married a guy with the last name of Channing. Around the time of Grease, she was Susan Stockard Channing, but dropped her first name and took Stockard Channing as her professional name.

by Anonymousreply 20June 19, 2022 12:13 PM

A thread about “Gloria” starring Sally Fucking Struthers exceeds 100 replies and I get less than two dozen?

by Anonymousreply 21June 22, 2022 1:13 AM

Stockard Channing is certainly a more distinguished name than Susan Stockard or Susan Channing.

by Anonymousreply 22June 22, 2022 1:26 AM

Well, Stocks, you were in that movie that glorified drag queens and that movie had that horribly long name, so everybody kind of ignored you.

by Anonymousreply 23June 22, 2022 1:27 AM

Good news. The pilot for this just got uploaded on-line (at link) to watch.

Oh good...it's Mimi Kennedy.

I've always liked her, and I really buy them as sisters.

by Anonymousreply 25December 13, 2023 7:00 PM

She looked 40 when she was in her 20s. And that speech impediment is annoying.

"Did don't Ellen do..."

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 28December 13, 2023 8:05 PM

She was known as Stockard Channing with her first film “The Fortune.” Did Mike Nichols direct it? Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson were the stars and it was a showcase for her. It was supposed to be huge.

by Anonymousreply 29December 14, 2023 1:34 AM

Thank god we got to the bottom of this mystery!
