Yeah, they should have gone with someone more classically handsome. Gosling is attractive, but Ken needs to have All-American looks. Like James Marsden. He would have been perfect once upon a time. I’m sure Greta and Noah had been feverishly collaborating on elevating the material and had lots of pseudo-intellectual conversations during which they considered color blind casting (to convince themselves they are progressive) but then decided to go with the period correct 1959 standard of beauty/aka the living Ken doll, which they (and Warners) wanted to do all along.

The problem with casting that look today is that the pool is small: Hollywood no longer churns out that many blond all-American looking hotties. We tend to import them from other countries these days.

Especially a problem if Ken is called upon to act. Which is likely the case with Greta and Noah at the helm. But Greta and Noah are about as humorous as a heart attack. They are good with satire and coastal wit, but that’s it. It would be like having Woody Allen direct Wedding Crashers.

Basically, Ken needs to look like Trevor Donovan but be able to act and have charisma. Paul Walker circa 2003 would possibly have been good. Billy Magnussen is a bit beady eyed but could have done it. I also think he is tired of taking his shirt off.

Regardless, messing with source material like Barbie is risky financially…it can either go the way of Charlie’s Angels (+$$$) or Josie and the Pussycats (-$). It seems like it will be a great big flop, at the moment.

It’s really about how he speaks, if he can nail Ken’s cadence and tone I think it will be a winning role for him.
