Texas Latinos flip to Republican in special Comgressional Election

Democrats’ majority in House gets even thinner. Dems lost a Hispanic district yesterday that Biden won by 13 pts in 2020. Dems better wake up. They have a big problem with Hispanics. Dems do great with the MSNBC/Twitter left, but they have a big problem with male working class Americans white, black, and brown. Republican Mayra Flores’ victory for U.S. House Seat In South Texas is First GOP Win There In 150+ Years

Why would anti-abortion, homophobic, anti-feminism, gun-obsessed, anti-science, hypocritical, ugly, fat, micro-peen Latinos vote for the Democrats? And why should we debase our values to be like them???

by Anonymousreply 1June 15, 2022 9:55 AM

"And why should we debase our values to be like them???"

The key word here is "debase". Do you understand de base of the Democratic Party?

by Anonymousreply 2June 15, 2022 9:58 AM

The question is will California, New York, Northeast, and rural Latinos follow Florida and Texas Republicans into the GOP
Texas Latinos flip to Republican

Well, I guess all is forgiven.

by Anonymousreply 5June 15, 2022 10:08 AM

Special election, close to zero turnout, no investment by national party, GOP candidate outspent the Democrat 16 to 1, held under lines that will be obsolete in 4 months.

Successor district in November is ten points more Democratic and has an incumbent in it. She will be in Congress for 6 months before heading out the door in January.

Weird things happen in redistricting + special elections.

Not sure what OP's upshot here is. Because rural Tejanos in South Texas want to vote for Republicans, I should...what? Not support lower prescription drug costs? Give every kid a free AR-15 on their 18th birthday? Storm the Capitol with an armed militia?

by Anonymousreply 6June 15, 2022 10:08 AM

"The question is will California, New York, Northeast, and rural Latinos follow Florida and Texas Republicans into the GOP"

From this article: "For example, according to election data analyzed by the Allentown Morning Call, Biden won 74% of the vote in two city ward districts, which are both about 78% Hispanic. While that may seem like a healthy victory, Hillary Clinton won 83% of the vote in those wards in 2016. This improvement for Trump in Allentown was mirrored nationwide."

r7 I chuckled when I saw those stats back then. So much self-flagellation by the Dems over those brown kiddies in cages during his presidency, and he only increased their support in the end, you just have to laugh.

We all knew the country would get (even) more moderate as they enter the electorate. They are by and large socially conservative and that's something that'll slowly start reshaping the country in the coming decades.

by Anonymousreply 10June 15, 2022 11:03 AM

Latinos are leaving the Democratic party. Biden approval is currently 6040 against with Latinos. Latinos prefer the term Hispanic is forced to choose but primarily identify with their country or origin or as American immigrants. American immigrants don't like the woke BS and systemic racism navel gazing because they come from countries with first order problems, not second order, which are nebulous and non discrete so much more difficult to define and address.

Latinos are ~18.5% of the US whites are 60% blacks 12.5%. Also, like red hair, height, or other cosmetic genetic traits, skin color is a stupid thing to divide humans over. I wish Democrats still believed that like they did ten years ago.

by Anonymousreply 13June 15, 2022 11:38 AM

You mean NPR reporting about injustice to BIPOC isn’t galvanizing the Hispanic community. Hard to believe

by Anonymousreply 14June 15, 2022 11:47 AM

The majority of voters don't care about NPR, Twitter, or cable news. The highest rated cable news show gets 3.6 million viewers (the Five on Fox). 150 million people actually vote.

We need to stop focusing on media.

by Anonymousreply 26June 15, 2022 12:42 PM

All of you fretting over the demise of the Democratic Party should READ THE ARTICLE at the link. She won because the Democrats didn't invest in this election at this time since they will win it in November. Whether or not that was wise, it is extremely unlikely that the party will lose the election that matters: the one in November.

by Anonymousreply 27June 15, 2022 12:43 PM
Why would anti-abortion, homophobic, anti-feminism, gun-obsessed, anti-science, hypocritical, ugly, fat, micro-peen Latinos vote for the Democrats? And why should we debase our values to be like them???

Because long-term democratic strategy, based on past voting trends, was that Hispanics would help them turn certain states, like Texas, blue. This is not going according to plan because I think the party has unestimated how conservative many Hispanics are and the party has done some things to push that demographic into the waiting and open arms of the republicans.

Once again, it's all about messaging and outreach.

by Anonymousreply 28June 15, 2022 12:45 PM

So, now people of Hispanic background are the new Deplorables, according to R1,11, 16,18,20. You might want to check with Hills how well that worked out for her.

by Anonymousreply 32June 15, 2022 12:59 PM

Americans are stupid. Why should the subset of Hispanics differ? Why should they be the ones expected to read; to listen not to FOX; to be knowledgeable about Republican policies, votes on Bills, corruption, pro-Putinism, anti-Social Security and Medicare plans, etc.? Sarcasm.

Hope you are joking, or just being ironic R31. If not, Spend some time with Mexican Americans, or any other group, before you judge. Having been in a biz. relationship with a Mexican American, I can tell you I adore them. Friendly(once they know you aren't judging them) fun, welcoming, great food, music & yes, family oriented. & very country oriented as well. They love a laugh, a good meal, some music & a dance. I love em'. Once, you're in, you suddenly have this whole other loving family. And they take you as you are.

My biz. partner was also a gay man. He was always out to his parents, his 6 brothers & sisters. He was not messed with in his youth growing up in the South West. They adored his longterm(30+years)partner. They helped cared for the partner when he was dying.

Democrats: got everyone vaccinated for free, finally got funding for BADLY needed infrastructure repair, got people money to make it through the pandemic, got schools open again, work on the root causes of illegal immigration across the southern border by working with countries to improve the conditions down there so they don't feel compelled to come here, got jobs back in record time (more jobs created in a shorter time than ever in history), reduced the budget deficit in record time (falling farther and faster than any time in history), united our NATO allies exactly when needed, and basically are working hard to make lives better for all Americans of all races, faiths, creeds, etc.... and all you people can do is bitch and whine.

WTF is wrong with Americans? The only decent party that has any interest in the hard work of governing and making this country better, and everyone shits all over them and runs to the party of pathologically lying criminally corrupt fascist authoritarian white supremacist con-men, morons, incompetents, frauds, and idiots.

It's the classic "I got mine" or "pulling up the ladder behind you" mentality. I got across the border, now close it for the others and lower taxes, so I can live my American Dream of becoming a millionaire one day. It doesn't help that so many leftist countries in Central and South America are shitholes, which then becomes their main reference point when casting a vote in the US.

by Anonymousreply 55June 15, 2022 2:43 PM

Republicans want to destroy social security, medicare, and medicaid. They want to end the ACA and knock tens of millions of people off their healthcare and skyrocket healthcare prices. They want to raise taxes on working people and the middle class, while cutting them even more on the wealthy. They want to commit genocide against LGBT people, and strip Black & Brown people of their civil rights. They want to destroy the public school system and replace them with private for-profit religious indoctrination.

This is not hyperbole. This is not exaggeration. These are all things public GOP officials and office-holders have said publicly, as well as the obvious outcome of nearly all their "policies", such as they are.

by Anonymousreply 62June 15, 2022 2:57 PM

Anecdotal, but if you bothered to listen to alternate media, you'll hear a completely different perspective. On last night's Timcast, Hispanic journalists Jorge Ventura and Drew Hernandez discussed the Latino shift away from the Democrats, and it comes down to the culture wars -- go to the 34 minute mark in the video. Hispanics, along with other immigrant groups from Asia and Africa, tend to be more religious and conservative compared to white people in the Democratic party, and the battles over abortion, trans, and even gay rights are a turn off to them, and they feel very strongly about legal vs illegal immigration. As ever, I will say the Republicans are awful, and they are pouncing on these issues to their benefit without really wanting to help the poor in those communities; but our corrupt political system is set up to benefit only two parties, and until we can correct that, this will be on-going.

by Anonymousreply 64June 15, 2022 3:01 PM

Exactly- a lot of "brown" people are anti-abortion, and a lot of black people are anti-gay.

Culture wars are not our friend.

As for ACA, the expanded child tax credit under Covid- you seem to misunderstand above in your wild hyperbole that not all people of color participate in government programs. Many work and have private insurance or pay for care directly. There's a fundamental fantasy voter of color problem here.

by Anonymousreply 65June 15, 2022 3:05 PM

80% of all black households and 83% of all Hispanics households in 2020, when rates were higher, ARE NOT in poverty.

by Anonymousreply 66June 15, 2022 3:07 PM

There are a few misconceptions about Hispanic voters. 1) many are not immigrants, they are first/second generation native born citizens. 2) most of the immigrant ones, who become citizens, came here in some legal manner and therefore take an extreme dislike towards illegal immigration. Many of those voters see illegal immigration as importing the problems from their home country that they purposely left behind. Therefore, being anti-illegal immigration isn't a negative to them, it is a plus.

But, if there is one thing polls tell us that Hispanic/Latino voters hate almost universally, it is the term Latinx.

by Anonymousreply 72June 15, 2022 5:20 PM

The other big reason Hispanic people are turning away is that the Democratic Party recast their minority priority back with Black voters after Clinton/Kline had pivoted so hard to Hispanics, and Hispanics aren’t impressed. They knew that they’re 20% and growing and Blacks are 13% and shrinking. Add Asians who are 7% and growing (especially South Asians) and you can easily win elections without the black vote if you win 1/2 each of Hispanic and Asian voters. Why was it Kamala and not Catherine Cortez Masto or Michelle Lujan Grisham? Why was it Ketanji Brown Jackson and not Gonzalo Curiel? Why is it always a Cuban or Puerto Rican and never a Mexican-American? They noticed they were being taken for granted, and were easy pickings.

by Anonymousreply 73June 15, 2022 5:20 PM

Black voters have consistently higher voting rates than Hispanics or Asian voters. And the demos are not evenly spread around the country so their citation is kind of pointless. Asian voters are concentrated in blue states already. Hispanic voters powered the Arizona flip. Black voters powered the Georgia flip and the retention of the senate. Texas is a mirage for Democrats.

Wait; let me guess. Believing they can get rich "by playing by the rules."

Believing Protestant Christian Whites are on the same side as Roman Catholic Browns in wanting to foster racial equality. And that the latter are welcome in the neighborhoods of the former.

Believing that when PCWs talk about private-school vouchers that they include RC parochial schools and not just the likes of Andover, Choate, etc.

And, being rather matriarchal, believing that having the same anti-abortion stance in general means that PWCs wouldn't put a post-pregnancy woman in prison, or wouldn't save her life if endangered by the pregnancy.

The Trump as a "macho" man cracks me the fuck up. He's obese, out of shape (remember the golf cart when everyone else was walking about 800 yards?). A macho man does not meticulously apply pancake make up (badly, I might add) and elaborately style his hair to cover his balding head. A real man owns that shit and shaves his head.

by Anonymousreply 99June 16, 2022 12:31 AM

Democrats were told this for months but it's not as if they haven't known it for decades...

Yet perhaps they were blindsighted by the regressive era we went thru... and the malicious antintellectualism that has seeped into the leftwing. It's even worse among the nations of South America, where ahistorical kiddies believe they are descendants of the aztecs (because they know of no others and the long standing use of it with supremacy cults that taut it as an ancient alien civilization and part of the hollow earth mythos)... and the aggressive push in these activist cults for socialism, which sends many former leftists to the right. . . which, unfortunately, remains in it's far wings.

But their leftist parties are failing the same way when they move to the other side, they come at them with all mindless hate from slurs to violence... which, of course, doesn't lure back these wayward lambs to the ideals of paternalistic state. . .

U.S. Dems have been running in place. . . they haven't learned a single thing from losing to Trump. We see them making the same mistakes over and over again.

The one thing about the racists on the right, they approach you from the front. The bigots of the left always come at you from behind or the peripheral.

And democrats, like many of the liberals here, infantilize minorities. . .

republicans are no better, especially with Trump still in the wings. . .

But Biden remains a point of contention among many. . . particularly those old enough to live through the rest of his career. He's not Trump is no longer selling. It's not enough.

And the candidates were weak in most districts. . . I mentioned it months ago while watching the debates that most seem to debate as if they had their eye on the white house whether than their elections they were in.

But it's a problem of politics all over... no one wants to buidl up anymore... they all aim to work pyramid schemes from the top down.

r99 and now, you're ready to build a wall and deport, eh? go figure.

This is either the 2nd or 3rd time I've seen this. Black women show up for democratic candidates between 92 and 97 percent of the time. Black men, while not nearly as loyal as black women, are still pretty loyal to democratic candidates - despite some slight movement to more conservative candidates (but nothing for democrats to be overly concerned about - yet) So, what would you have the party do? Just completely pretend one of their strongest voting blocks doesn't exist?

The way I see it, democrats can't count on white women and it seems like in every election about 20% of gays vote republican. So, please tell me... what do the democrats do since you're tired of those blacks taking up all the air in the room?

R102 sounds like a vile racist

by Anonymousreply 108June 16, 2022 12:59 AM

R102 There are many issues where a proposal would benefit people across demographic groups, but the Democrats and the media portray it as being a "black" issue. Police brutality for instance, shouldn't have been just focused on black men. The police shoot too many people in this country, full stop. Especially if you are a young working class male of any race/ethnicity. I would posit that one of the main reasons young black men are represented disproportionally is because of the fact that black people have the highest poverty level of any race/ethnicity other than perhaps Native Americans, and the most impoverished of them tend to live on reservations which are like small towns, where you know the cops and are probably related to them.

By, highlighting it only as a racial issue, it makes it easy for others to use it to divide people. Since the George Floyd riots, there has been at least three police shootings in my area, where the media was blasting it around on tv and the internet, it until they found out the cops shot a white guy and it was like it never happened.

I am 61 years old. I have been out since the age of 18 and I have voted in every election, never missing one, even the small, local ones. In that time, I have always read that Black people have voted for Dems by over 90%. Also that LGBT folks have always gone for Dems 2-1. The majority of White men have not voted for a Dem (for POTUS) since JFK. Lately, the trend for for Latinos (& API) has been for Dems 2-1. As many have noted, I keep reading how the Republicunts are making inroads with Hispanics using Spanish language media and painting Dems as Hugo Chavez supporters, Marxists, pedophiles, etc. The GOP base is shrinking/dying, they have no other choice. Old White folks are keeping the GQP alive.

Latinos are assimilating into the culture and finding that the white working class bogeyman trope isn’t as real as the Democratic Party made it out to be.

Same road as Italians and other Mediterranean immigrants a century ago.

The problem is always blacks. Mexican society doesn’t have Blatinos the way Caribbeans (read: Puerto Ricans) do. Blacks don’t like Latinos whereas you don’t see the same for whites.

Look at Chicago where the blacks were going ballistic they’d lose wards to Latino alderman because of demographics.

Democrats and their “big tent” always go back to black and after the George Floyd summer people are real tired of it. Why wouldn’t Latinos be? There’s no “solidarity” there no matter how much the Dems and the MSM try to make the world “people of color” vs white.

by Anonymousreply 119June 16, 2022 12:42 PM

Hispanics esp. Mexican Americans are willing & do work hard for their money. They are not willing to see Politicians waste it & give it away to people who will not work. They are fundamentalists by accident. Hard lives & work has created an interesting phenomena. They live by the old testament proverb , No work, no eat, without even knowing they are.

If you are blest to be invited to a big party or dinner with MexicanAmericans, no one sits around while there is something to be done. All hands on deck to cook, set up, breakdown, clean up.

Could somebody tell all the dumb GOP trolls on twitter, that Texas Hispanics don't think Beto is Hispanic because of his nickname. Everybody in Texas knows who Beto is now. And they know he's a border Anglo who speaks Spanish and represented El Paso for years.

by Anonymousreply 164June 17, 2022 7:00 PM
Ya know, it’s pretty offensive and arrogant to tell others they aren’t voting in their interest.

No, it's just ignorant to BLATANTLY not vote in your own interests. Latino people who are voting Republican are BY DEFINITION not voting in their best interests. Because Republicans HATE Latinos, and want to eradicate them, keep them down, prevent them from voting, take away their healthcare, not let them move into their neighborhoods, want to destroy their schools, and make any and all prejudice against them not just legal, but legally mandatory.

Same goes for Black people voting Republican (the vast majority have figured that out, over 90%), and for LGBT+ people (between 70-90% of them have figured it out). That Latinos are going the WRONG DIRECTION is a problem, and it's a problem in and of the Latino community, and it's something they'd better wake up to, figure out, and solve soon.
What is a woman, [R155]? Bet you can't tell me. Even though the scientific EVIDENCE is right before your eyes.

Okay, dumbass. Define it. Go ahead.

A person with breasts? Some men develop them/have them.

A person who lactates? Some men lactate at puberty, it's normal and natural.

Someone with a uterus? Not all women have them. Many older women have them removed. Are they not women anymore?

Someone with two X chromosomes? Some perfectly (and stunningly) beautiful women are born with XY chromosomes. Some people have XXY, some have XYY.

You see everything so simplistically. So simple-minded. Sex and gender are just not the strict binary you always thought they were and still think they are... they never were. The VAST MAJORITY do slot easily in to the two categories you want to be the only categories, but not everyone does. And that's just factual, scientific reality. Your tiny narrow mind just can't handle it, can't grasp it, so it makes you irrationally angry.

It's a stupid question to start with, to demand someone "define a woman", as if all women can be boiled down to a single sentence or property. I know you thought you were nailing down the winning argument there, but all you were doing is exposing yourself as a bigoted, sexist cunt.

by Anonymousreply 173June 18, 2022 12:22 AM

My points of reference are all Texas so this may not be applicable to Latinos in other parts of the US. In Texas, Mexicans as they were known in the bad old days (though they are now proud to be Mexican-Americans), were lower on the social order than black people were. They suffered for generations and generations from the most abject prejudice, as much as black people in Texas, but without any real recognition for what they had suffered. A Mexican-American from Texas was killed during WWII and was a much-decorated soldier. When his body was flown home to his town in Texas, he was refused burial in the town's cemetery. LBJ had his body flown to DC and he was buried in Arlington.

It's hard to ascertain how much prejudice they've suffered for generations and what effect this has had on their psyches. They also are invariably either Catholic or evangelicals and even if Democrats offer them more, they are frequently one issue - abortion - voters. They aren't at all at obvious base for the left unlike African-Americans.
Because Republicans HATE Latinos, and want to eradicate them, keep them down, prevent them from voting, take away their healthcare, not let them move into their neighborhoods, want to destroy their schools, and make any and all prejudice against them not just legal, but legally mandatory.

Receipts? No one "hates" Latinos, idiot. Stop with the histrionics and outright lies.

Oh snap, R169. LOL. Poor R168 wasted a lot of energy on that tedious word salad. And you knocked him out cold with one sentence. Bravo
A woman is an adult human female, the sex that produces the gamete called an ovum.

So a lot of people that are women don't match your simplistic categorization. Barren women aren't women according to you? Women who have had hysterectomies aren't women?

That is a tortured argument. People who do not believe you can change your sex through hormones or surgery, would say that a woman who has had a hysterectomy is still a woman. Just because she had parts removed would not change that. While barren women may be missing certain things or they are faulty, their bodies are still born anatomically female. No one makes the argument that they aren't female other than trans people in order to try and prop themselves up, saying if you include "those women" you have to include transwomen .

The last half of the sentence wasn't even necessary. A woman is simply "an adult human female". MtF trannies can't call themselves "female" because that term only refers to bio girls and women.

I'm still wondering what the problem is with the "adult human female" answer to that question! I really don't want to conclude that it's been deemed off-limits because people like Matt Walsh or Posie Parker use the term, because I think it's a really, [italic]really[/italic] bad idea to let your enemies control what you will or will not say, but I can come up with no other possible reason.

Did you know that as you type in that phrase in Google or YouTube, no suggestions at all come up? That's not by accident.

R179, yeah, TRAs are always trying to muddy the water. They do the same thing with intersex people.

Because it's circular. What's a woman? A female. What's a female? A woman. Around and around you go. It's a circular definition, or a non-definition.

But of course none of your simpletons even noticed that.

by Anonymousreply 184June 19, 2022 6:50 AM

The simpletons are the people who think a man can become a woman.

XX and XY chromosomes nicely clarify the issue. As does human anatomy.
Because it's circular.

And the "anyone who identifies as a woman" response to the "what is a woman" question isn't??

by Anonymousreply 187June 19, 2022 10:11 PM

I identify as Brad Pitt though 20 years younger.

by Anonymousreply 188June 19, 2022 10:56 PM

No it isn't circular at all, R184. Female and Male refer to biological sex, not what you "feel like" on any given day.

by Anonymousreply 189June 20, 2022 6:15 PM

What is circular (and insane) is for a biological male to insist he is 100% certain he is a "woman" when he can't even define what one is.
