Only a small portion of it burned down, and that was a full thirty years ago. They restored it pretty quickly.

Windsor Castle has always been the place the Queen has most considered home since her parents moved there in 1936. She's never considered Buckingham Palace a proper home at all, and has always spent more time in Windsor whenever she can (it is not very far from London). None of the royal family much enjoys spending time in Buck House--they've never figured out a way to heat it properly.

Buckingham Palace wasn’t always the home of the monarch, and there’s still the Court of St. James. There’s no good reason, other than it’s not in London, for Windsor Castle not being made the official residence of the British monarch.. Keep Buckingham Palace as a museum and storage building.

Have any of its residents ever liked living at BP? I read that Churchill and Parliament basically told QEII and her young family they had to take up residence there, against their wishes. They cried as they were chauffeured from Clarence House to BP. I'm pretty sure I read King George VI and the Queen Mother preferred to live at Royal Lodge.

Buckingham Palace is an icon. The home of the monarch in the capital. Looking down The Mall toward the seat of the British government. There is aq kind of living drama about the royal standard flying, saying the King is here. Imagine the White House as an office and venue but the President living at Camp David. It's all symbolic, but powerful symbols.

Some of these royal digs sound lavish but I recall seeing photos of some living quarters at Kensington Palace, etc. and most DL’ers would deem them rather tacky. I have two retired co-worker friends both with beach and mountain cottages. They seem well off by my standard but are retired state workers. So, three places to live for a future King isn’t that much.

It's not exactly unusual. As soon as my brother and sister-in-law had their first child, they moved out of the city and back to the rural county that my brother was raised in.

When you've got a family and get older, the city is a lot less attractive and many see it for what it is.
