Did Kim wear proper foundation garments to prevent bulging and spreading? Marilyn probably didn't, but the dress was designed for her, not Kim. Kim's larger size should have mandated a tight longline girdle. You can see that stretching was at the waist as well as the hips.

This stupid spoiled cunt almost always gets what she wants even if she NEVER deserves it. At least the royal family had were able to say "no" to her wanting to attend the Jubilee and meet the Queen.
Her audacity is off of the charts. I'm surprised she didn't ask the law school she's allegedly studying at to just give her or sell her a law degree without taking several years to just attend classes, study and pass like a normal human being.
But then again she's so fucking stupid that she'd never pass even if she did it the honest normal way. She tried to dial 911 for help after she got robbed in France ffs.
R8 The original shoes, hat, gloves and purse that go with that outfit have since been lost. All that remains is the suit itself.
It's owned by an actual museum unlike Marilyn's dress and is hidden somewhere in a climate controlled room. It is forbidden to be shown to the public for a least a century from now due to the request of the Kennedy family. Ironically Kris tried to dress like Jackie O. at the Met Gala and failed miserably.
The whole Kardashian-Jenner family is the literal definition of the term "nouveau riche" as well as the saying "lipstick on a pig."

Marilyn's original stunting in this dress was surely early and very successful Famewhoring 101. It was an appalling and vulgar stunt to wear that and sing so seductively to JFK. Fun, but vulgar. And Marilyn wasn't always vulgar. To think its possible that Kennedy offed Marilyn is just added irony.
The dress is owned by a tacky carnivalesque showbiz company. It's not some priceless and important artifact of American history.
This new stunt earned everyone involved ENDLESS exhaustive media coverage and there is no such thing as bad publicity in that worldview.
I consider KK wearing it entirely consistent.
It helped bring some focus on the dress again, which is slowly rotting anyway, so in one sense it really was value added.

Jackie's pink Chanel style suit she wore in Dallas does not belong to a museum. It belongs to her daughter Carolyn and is stored in the National Archive in DC in a climate controlled environment. As the agreements currently stand, the earliest the public might see it is 2103 but that is up to Carolyn and her heirs. It might never happen or it might happen earlier (unlikely). Curiously, all the accessories Jackie wore with the suit -- her hat, gloves, purse, shoes, etc. -- have disappeared.

I saw half a second of KK and her helpers assisting her with stepping into the dress instead of slipping the dress over her head. I knew they were all amateurs and it was curtains for that dress. And to think that clan once owned a clothing store and sell foundation garments. Ridiculous.

Not quite, fortunately R12. She wanted to marry at the Palace of Versailles. She certainly could afford to rent the whole thing for one evening, as corporates often do. However the French government swiftly said “Qui est cette cunt?” and told her to keep her fat arse away.

The worst thing is.. Okay not the worst thing, but it's so sad that it even looked shit on her. It matched Marilyn's skin tone. It also highlighted her way to carry herself, her perky breasts, her way to move by the stones dazzling in the spotlight. It elevated a beautiful body to that of a goddess noone could take their eyes off that night. It's like magic. When Kim K wears it, it looks dead. She walks and looks like a potato in comparison.

R24 is correct. According to Susan Strasberg's MM biography, the dress almost matched MM's skin tone, so as to make her appear nude under the lights. Plus her white, blown-out hair helped that look a lot.
Strasberg was there at JFK's birthday and said the whole audience gasped when MM took off that stole and stood there glimmering, but that she felt sad for MM. She had spent years trying to be taken seriously as more than a sex symbol and here she was parodying herself in front of the world.
Fun fact: MM's date for the evening was Isadore Miller, her former father-in-law whom she was close to.

Kim's upper body was slim enough for the dress. Her ass was too large, though. Here are some photos of her ass / underwear exposed while wearing the dress. She covered it up with the fur stole she was wearing.
Ripley's did undo some of the seams / stitches in the back. Looks like the zipper was removed and then sewn back in, afterwards.
IMO, this was Ripley's way of getting more people into the museum.
Kim always chickens out on the details, though. She could have been more daring with the hair and makeup, but no, she always sticks to what she feels makes her pretty.
Was this dress even on theme for this year's Met Gala? I don't know. Kim is historically never on theme for the Met Gala. She always sticks to her comfort zone.
The Happy Birthday (MM) performance made me cringe when I saw it. It was creepy, the singing voice, everything. There's a scene in the Sopranos where Tony's father's goomar (girlfriend) imitates the performance and it captured the creepiness.

by Anonymous | reply 101 | June 14, 2022 6:16 PM |
This is a good video about the origins of the dress and its construction.
The two things that keep being misstated in some news sources are that Bob Mackie designed it and that Ms. Monroe was sewn into it.
Mackie was merely a sketch artist for the actual designer, Jean Louis. This was one of Mackie’s first jobs. To think Mackie “designed” this dress just because he sketched it is like claiming he “designed” the costumes for the MM film “Something’s Got to Give”. In both cases he was told what to draw by the actual designer, Jean Louis. And as to that film, he had to redo his first sketch 20 times or so before it was approved by Jean Louise to show MM and the production heads.
There was one (previously unplanned) stitch added to the dress the night MM put it on for the ceremony, to fix a pucker and make it cling more smoothly in the back. That’s the extent of MM being “sewn into” the dress.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | June 14, 2022 6:24 PM |
R57 I didn't know she got her mits on that dress too. It looked terrific on MM who had lost a lot of weight in 1961 after gallbladder removal. She won "World's Favourite Female" at the Golden Globes in 1962 just a few months before she died.
In this rare colour you can see MM was quite pale, hence why the JFK dress made her look nude. Not the same effect with 4 layers of fake tan

I don't understand how the "design" of the dress is so groundbreaking. The nude color and crystals (not too many) were smart to do. It was an extremely form-fitting dress, low in the front and back with thin straps. What made it was Marilyn's body & figure.

R100 Ripley’s gave her the lock of hair - which was cut off Marilyn’s head at the morgue by a worker who gave it as a “gift” to his wife.

Strasberg's, more to point wife and daughter fucked over MM royally. Much of her personal possessions such as that ionic JFK birthday dress should have gone to Smithsonian or some other collection to be preserved.
Instead things were stored in garages, warehouses then lot finally auctioned off so Strasberg's could make even more money off MM for their own purposes. Main one of course is that acting school....
Dress was likely fucked from being stored improperly and not handled as it should have been. Guy who bought it at that huge MM auction put it on display (again improperly) for years. It was then sold off to current owners who have continued abuse.

Debbie Reynolds also had a ton of Hollywood memorabilia. Nobody apparently wanted to help her house / display the items. People want things to be preserved, but nobody wants to pay for it. Aside from lending it to KK, Ripley's seems to be taking care of that dress. I'm sure there are lots of personal shit (from deceased stars) in garages and basements across the US. Not everybody has the time or money to preserve these items in the right climate, temperature, etc.

[quote]I’m not a Kim fan—at all—but I don’t blame her for this. I think she did treat the dress respectfully and didn’t do anything wrong.
Oh, stop. There was no respect shown at any time. Yes, if Ripley's had refused her request, then the gown would not be damaged. But Kim deserves plenty of blame as well. First, for getting the idea in her selfish head that she was entitled to wear such a fragile, one-of-a-kind outfit. Second, once she realized she couldn't fit the gown over her monstrous ass, she should have stopped then and there. Third, she could have had a replica made that matched her skin tone and her measurements that she could wear for the duration of the Met Gala. Outside of her dumb stans, with this customized version there would have been more positive reactions from the rest of the public.
But no, this slore only cares about herself and what she can do for more self-aggrandizement (this travesty, the attempt to attend QEII's Platinum Jubilee, the attempt to get married to Kanye at Versailles, etc.) Despite her fake display of concern, she didn't care that Marlyn's gown would be damaged as long as it got her any kind of attention. Leopard attention whores don't change their spots.

As discussed in other thread on this subject (MM's dress), yes, Debbie Reynolds had tons of film memorabilia, but not all of it was worth keeping in a private museum.
Had she but offered many public museums such as Smithsonian or maybe better galleries would have taken certain choice pieces.
Furthermore there is a difference between an item of clothing from a private wardrobe, versus a costume from film or theatre.
The latter are just that, property created for and by a film or stage production which they expect to get good use. Many times things are sent to wardrobe/costume departments after first use and endlessly recycled for subsequent productions. Between wear and tear from many alterations and use, things become somewhat tired and worn. That is how Debbie Reynolds acquired good part of her collection; studios no longer had use for costumes and were rubbishing or otherwise getting rid of same.
Wedding gown worn by Julie Andrews in "Sound Of Music" was endlessly reused in theatrical productions of that musical.
MM only wore that gown the once IIRC, and died not long afterwards. Had it been but into hands of museum or professional conservator it would likely out last us all.

[quote]R111 I don't understand how the "design" of the dress is so groundbreaking.
It’s not. The video @ r102 points out it wasn’t the first of it’s kind. It’s a simple silhouette, perfectly executed, with clever cutting in the way that the extra panel at the back helps the fit, and the way the bodice is pieced together to give the bust support.
But it was the right dress at the right time on the right person.

No, not exactly correct timeline.
All costumes from film "Sound of Music" went to Western Costume were they went into general recirculation. this included Maria's wedding gown.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | June 15, 2022 7:57 AM |
Jane Withers did indeed acquire Maria's wedding dress, but at some later point by which time it had been well used and possibly altered.
"Once the filmed wrapped, the gown went into the costume stock at The Western Costume Company, where it was likely rented out numerous times. One time it seems to have been used was in 1968 in the television show The Ghost and Mrs.Muir in the second episode - The Haunted Honeymoon, where it was worn by Yvonne Craig as Gladys Zimmermann, though the gown appears to have undergone some alterations.
And
"At some point, the gown was purchased and put into the private collection of Jane Withers, and ultimately went up for acution at Julien’s Live in 2013, where it sold for $23,040."
by Anonymous | reply 145 | June 15, 2022 7:59 AM |
Later on much of remaining costumes from Sound of Music were also auctioned, fetching over one million USD.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | June 15, 2022 8:04 AM |
Profiles In History also auctioned off several costumes worn by Marilyn Monroe including that iconic "subway dress" from film "The Seven Year Itch".
All those things and more including MM's JFK "birthday dress" should have gone to the Smithsonian or another museum collection. There they could not only have been properly cared for and stored, but perhaps an exhibited mounted that would do Marilyn Monroe's memory justice.

Marilyn left her personal property and estate to Lee Strasberg, as mentioned upthread, for her effects to be shared among her friends. Not only did the Stransbergs not give her personal effects to her close friends, they sold them off for a fortune, along with the rights to her image.
Strasberg's second wife (whom MM never met) made millions off dead Marilyn. Scum

MM may have left the personal property to the Strasbergs, but Shelley Winters grabbed the “I knew her better than anyone” crown. She claims she’s the one that taught MM to do that sexy, slightly open lips smile.

One MM dress that didn’t survive is the orange one from “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” Abbey Lincoln wore it in “The Girl Can’t Help it,” then… took matters into her own hands.
[wuote] “Shortly after the film, I burned it in an incinerator to make sure I’d never wear it again. My press agent invented a portrait of me as an imitation of Marilyn Monroe … I felt like a fake. This dress was more important than I was. People in the audience were looking at my exposed breasts and the shape of my body, and it didn’t have nothing to do with the music.”

What I was trying to say was that folks have mistaken the "Happy Birthday" dress for the Photoplay Awards dress - the dress at the link is the one that Marilyn had to be sewn into because it was so tight. This was the infamous event where Joan Crawford was so pissed at the attention given to Marilyn that she trashed her in an interview.
