Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey
Started this last night on Netflix. Hulu's Under the Banner of Heaven got me started on these insane nut jobs. I'd heard of Jeffs of course as he had a compound here in Texas he'd sneak into but hearing directly from people who had fled the cult was illuminating. One girl was married off to her cousin at 14 or 15 and had 6 kids by 24. One girl was married off at 18 to an 83 yo Rulon Jeffs but after he died Warren started them off younger and younger.
Fascinating stuff.

Watching it too OP. Finding the women very likable.

I felt like I was watching a horror movie. And the fact that Warren is still their prophet - just sickening.

I really felt for Ruby - the girl who had a lot of spunk and got away at 15 and then was tricked to come back by that other teenager.

Yeah, the women who escaped are inspiring.
It's a fascinating documentary.

Did they ever say if the woman who had 6 kids by 24 ended up with her childhood sweetheart?

That reporter was awesome.
He went after them like a pit bull who wouldn’t let go of a bone.
I was so sickened. I cannot believe these people got and still get away with this shit.
These girls are still KIDS.

The reporter seemed to have gone down the meth road. He looked very different in the old footage.

I thought it was facial wasting, R7.
The reporter doesn’t act or speak like a meth head. He had presence of mind and still had a place to work and live at the time he was filmed.
He may look like a tweaker, but he doesn’t actually tick any of the boxes of a typical addict.

This series failed to address two big issues with the FLDS. The genetic issues of generations of intermarrying and the welfare fraud they are involved in

Just finished watching this. It started off really strong but the conclusion felt rushed. They could’ve included so much more.

Yes I was surprised it was only 4 episodes.

I think we all knew about the polygamy and child brides, but I'd forgotten about how they kicked out all the young boys and left them to fend for themselves. What an awful group of people, going along with the nutcase Jeffs.

Warren out on the lamb living the life in his gentile clothes at Disneyland with motorcycles and his favorite wives was quite something.
Such a dumb goofy ass face he has.

What's worse R13 is that a lot of people saw Warren's antics and maneuverings with Rulon before and just went with it but that's part of cult mentality and Mormons are brought up to not question the "prophet".

[quote] the welfare fraud they are involved in
Yes, I heard about that. Jeffs somehow turned it into a point of pride to collect welfare. Big Papa's children ... all on welfare.

They call it “bleeding the beast” or something like that.

Just started watching and the guy sitting slunk down in the recliner looks stupid, I guess the wife was afraid to tell him to sit his ass up

Score another victory for the utter horribleness and cruelty of religion. I will never understand how the promise of a clearly fictitious "heaven" can make otherwise intelligent humans act like total morons.

I read that the family on the Sister Wives show were guilty of welfare abuse too as some of them were getting food cards because they were considered single.

R21, technically, they are single, except for the first wife married to a polygamist.
All of the following marriages are not legally binding under a court of law.
All of the offspring from the multiple wives are legally entitled to child support from the polygamist father, but the women married to him after the first wife are single.
I understand what you mean, but I’m just pointing out the legal technicalities.
Anyhow, the worst part of this was when they discovered the rape room, where Jeff’s was raping little 12 year old girls and he recorded all of the rapes.
Fortunately, those recordings are what ultimately locked him up for life, but it was devastating to hear the audio of a child being raped in the name of God.
These people are fucking sick and I’m just grateful AF to have gotten away from the horror that religion inflicts on the lives of vulnerable people.

It's hard not to be impressed with Roger Ebert's continuing productivity.

So at the end that woman just left all her junk in the road?

I remember hearing about this when Jeff’s was on trial, good documentary. Those poor young girls.

Warren jeffs ran quite a racket:
[quote]Additionally, Jeffs defrauded the government by using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds, which help those in need to buy food through government-provided debit cards, according to a 2016 indictment by Utah's attorney general. The indictment alleged that non-authorized people were directed to buy food using SNAP funds. Then the food items were placed into a shared storehouse run by the FLDS, before being distributed by FLDS-run businesses. Members were forced to purchase food items only at these businesses, so the FLDS essentially made profits from free food through money laundering.
