Another Downton Abbey Movie (2022) Clip

Lord Grantham sounds and moves like an OLD MAN and Lady Mary looks too old to be a bright young bratty young thing. In real life she's 40 already.

Losing weight made Hugh Bonneville OLDER not younger.

Lord Grantham's sister looks like an OLD WOMAN.

I wonder if she said someone blotted their copybook.

She says that a lot.

by Anonymousreply 2June 8, 2022 1:50 AM

The whole Carson plot was pointless. He literally didn’t need to be in the movie.

by Anonymousreply 3June 28, 2022 4:43 PM

I just saw Jim Carter in a supporting role in "The Madness of King George". He's also the guest with the spooky eyes in "Haunted Honeymoon". I love finding "Downton" actors in older movies. It seems that the majority of the actors who remained for the whole series and the two movies are happy being known for "Downton" when they've done so much more, like it will be their legacy.

by Anonymousreply 4June 28, 2022 4:48 PM

R4 Honey, they are happy for the big fat checks.

by Anonymousreply 5June 28, 2022 5:05 PM

Hugh Bonneville does look old, and weirdly tanned.

He's 58 but looks at least 5-7 years older.

British men, sigh. So lovely, but they age like milk.

I found the second DA movie to be entertaining, fun and worthwhile. The plot was not consequential or earth-shattering, but the film was satisfying, kind of like catching up with old friends. The costumes and the scenery in the south of France were especially enticing.

Next film : Thomas inherits a male brothel in Rio.

Yeah I’m noticing barely any downstairs help plots except for the googly-eyed cooking women. .

I just streamed it. Much better than I expected. Certainly could be the end of that franchise (though I predict they'll be back on TV with Christmas specials in due course and might even revive the series if there's money to be made.) I have to say for a Julian Fellowes script it was far better than his usual nursery food. Felt a bit like the first series and that the actors were actually, in a few scenes, trying to act. It was quite well done in the context of what I expected.

by Anonymousreply 12July 2, 2022 1:52 AM

Actually, Hugh Bonneville looked better on DA (the show) than when he was younger and nebbish looking. I agree that the weight loss and the weird tan in this most recent movie do not agree with him.

by Anonymousreply 13July 2, 2022 2:15 AM

This one should have stopped after season one. Silly soap opera and not very good at that

by Anonymousreply 14July 2, 2022 2:21 AM

Well, it's certainly no Drag Race.

by Anonymousreply 15July 2, 2022 2:24 AM

I wonder if THE GILDED AGE will have legs like DOWNTON ABBEY does. I hate-watched Season 1 but I know lots of people who love it. It didn't have the charm of the early DOWNTON seasons for me.

Julian Fellowes will continue to make his fortune off of one idea, which is essentially a ripoff of UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS to begin with. Don't forget that he also wrote (the superior) GOSFORD PARK, too.

by Anonymousreply 16July 2, 2022 2:53 AM

I liked The Gilded Age but my main complaint is that, in my opinion, the dialogue is a bit too contemporary, probably because Fellowes is not too familiar with the colloquial American English from that period.

by Anonymousreply 17July 2, 2022 2:57 AM

Has Hugh Bonneville "gone Hollywood" or just having a midlife crisis? The weight loss and that distracting tan do him no favors.

by Anonymousreply 18July 2, 2022 7:25 AM

I think he's regained some of the weight. He was a pretty big guy. Between lockdown and COVID he may have decided to trim up but it was too much. He looks good again, not in a DL way, but in a his weight suits him and what we're used to way.

Any info on Robert James-Collier aka Thomas?

Is he gay, and if so: Who has had him?

Sizemeat verificatia?

RJC looked really good in the movie... fit and healthy.... he's aged well... it was the first time I'd seen him and thought him particularly attractive.

He's in one of those cheesy YA fantasy adaptations on Netflix - the Winx Saga.

He plays the hardened military commander with a heart of gold.

Side note: I did find it hilarious when Carson went into the hat shop and ran into Maude Bagshaw. When they were leaving, the clerk thanks the man and his wife.

by Anonymousreply 24July 20, 2022 9:52 PM

I just watched it over the weekend, it was cute and for me, hit all the right notes.

If you were a Downtown fan, you'll enjoy it.

by Anonymousreply 25July 20, 2022 9:57 PM

It definitely had a much more "final" sense to it - like it was truly ending and not just because of Maggie.

While I'm sort of glad they gave Barrow as much of a happy ending as a gay man in that era was ever going to get, the story itself didn't make much sense.

Fellows doesn't seem to understand how A, B, and C subplots work in a story - that they're supposed to echo and reinforce the themes of the main plot and by doing so give more richness and depth to the entire story as a whole. The movie is actually a bunch of subplots with no real main plot.

The issue of generational wealth had three key touchpoints that didn't work well together: Mary and the need for Downton to generate money, Sibby inheriting the villa from Violet to make up for her NOT inheriting wealth as her cousins would, the loss of the villa by the son/mother.

The issue of love, youthful love vs. lasting love, and lost love: Violet and the marquis (and Robert), Barrow and the actor, Robert and Cora.

Changing time (and overarching theme for the show): Downton's survival, movies and transition from silent to talkies and the impact on actors, Violet illness / Cora's illness.

by Anonymousreply 26July 21, 2022 1:07 PM

Yeah, I don't know how Fellowes managed to write such a decent script - compared only to his previous outputs. It showed actual thought. I still say they'll be back for Christmas specials in the UK - $$$$ - but it did feel like this movie was the last.

by Anonymousreply 27July 21, 2022 1:12 PM

What I wouldn't mind seeing in about 7-10 years is a WWII miniseries that sort of takes us back to the beginning. WWI fundamentally changed society and the Downton way of life. WWII was the final nail in the coffin to that way of life.

It would be 10+ year after this last movie, so George would be a young man who would be eligible to serve in the war (as had his father Matthew). Sibby and Marigold would be coming out (like Rose), but in a very different time.

Where I always thought the Tom Branson/Henry Talbot storyline should have gone is that they become very successful and very rich auto manufacturers and sellers - this would be the era of the rise of mass production of cars and factories in general. One of the more interesting twists to the Downton story would be if Tom Branson actually became wealthier than the Crawleys. It would have made for great tension in that strata of society for the people with birth and title to have to suck up to him. A fantastic scene would be to have Tom defend Robert from some new money people, just as Robert defended Tom early on - it would be such a powerful reversal and touching.

Just watched the second movie.

I was far less impressed than others on this thread. Julian Fellowes seems to me like the luckiest man in the world: he hit on one idea and has built an incredibly successful writing for movies and TV based on that one idea--while never improving or challenging himself as a dramatist. Not even a little bit

I guess he knows his audience.

by Anonymousreply 29May 13, 2023 5:09 AM

I had no idea about this. I will watch it right now. The other Downton Abbey stuff was fun and very watchable.

What does Petula Clark have to do with it?

by Anonymousreply 31May 13, 2023 3:19 PM

I watched this on STARZ early this morning. I thought it was very enjoyable and Hugh was SKINNY. Maggie's farewell at the end was done very well and I do love this cast so it was nice to see them all again.

by Anonymousreply 32December 25, 2023 7:54 PM

It did seem final...

.....and yet there's apparently been talk of a resumption of the show at some point - I think in the 30s or closer to WWII, with all the crotch droppings at an older age, perhaps young adults.

If they did continue the show, it needs to do a few things.

Make Mary a widow again - she should have never married Henry Talbot. They can bring that handsome director back around, maybe.

It would be something if Mary and Edith sort of switched places - Mary becoming more of a businesswoman and breaking norms as a widow, looking for happiness and success.....while Edith, in her role as the Marquess, becomes more about tradition, etc.

For further conflict, maybe Edith struggles when free spirit Marigold decides to emulate Aunt Mary......and future cottage queen George emulates Auntie Edith.....

They need to update a few other things too. I can't imagine the Bateses still being in service if their spawn is a teenager. Maybe they can own something that supplies the Abbey. And Mrs. Patmore should be retired.

It generated a lot of laughs in my film screening because Jim Carter and Imelda Staunton are well known as a famous acting couple. Their daughter is a handsome woman who plays one of Polly Walker's daughters in Bridgerton.

There's a promising but ultimately ridiculous movie on Netflix with Hugh Bonneville called I Came By, with Kelly McDonald and George MacKay. I think Boneville has a shirtless scene.

Hugh's character is a bore but I always found him fuckable in that slimy but hot cheating married man sort of way.

by Anonymousreply 36December 25, 2023 9:18 PM

The scripts and storylines are so weak...They should have stopped after the second season. Beautiful to look at but not much depth in the characters and stories.

by Anonymousreply 37April 10, 2025 4:23 PM

I hated Maggie's death. I'm surprised they didn't lay her on the dining room table, to cram in more people. I get it, it's a movie convention but you think about the old ramrod bitch from episode one and the group hug as she croaked..... People change, but not that much.

Fellowes is a strong creator... then he seems to either get bored and lazy or he is such a sucker for a happy ending he can't remember what he started with.

But, yep, so pretty to look at it I'll watch ten more movies and hope the series reboots.
