Julia Garner has been "offered" the role of Madonna in her upcoming biopic

[...]

by Anonymousreply 118June 11, 2022 4:30 PM

She doesn’t have Madonna’s edgy looks.

by Anonymousreply 1June 7, 2022 10:35 PM

There isn’t very much that’s terribly interesting about Madonna’s life story, actually.

The most dramatic thing about her is her work ethic.

by Anonymousreply 2June 7, 2022 10:37 PM

Hopefully the fan base, (the ones who think they know Madonna personally and what's best for her) don't send this girl running in the opposite direction.

They can be completely unbearable, kind of like the screaming banshees on this site, calling everyone trolls for having their own opinions.

Frigid, ancient, battered queens are no fun.

by Anonymousreply 3June 7, 2022 10:38 PM

[...]

by Anonymousreply 4June 7, 2022 10:40 PM

She should RUN from this. She's the hottest actress in town right now. Madonna is too toxic.

(That said, I think she'd kill it!)

by Anonymousreply 5June 7, 2022 10:46 PM

[quote]There isn’t very much that’s terribly interesting about Madonna’s life story, actually.

I think there's enough to fill about 75 minutes of narrative exposition spliced with multiple musical numbers and an 80s fashion montage or 12. That's not even counting the shit she made up. At least 5-10 minutes will be spent on a child actor as the young Madonna watching her mother die while wearing a communion dress.

This has the potential for camp classic.

by Anonymousreply 6June 7, 2022 10:47 PM

[quote] I can't with these laughable press releases.

You can't WHAT?

by Anonymousreply 7June 7, 2022 10:49 PM

Don’t do it!

by Anonymousreply 8June 7, 2022 10:51 PM

[quote] She doesn’t have Madonna’s edgy looks.

But unlike Madonna, Julia can actually act.

by Anonymousreply 9June 7, 2022 10:53 PM

It won't be a truthful documentary if Madonna has anything to do with it.

by Anonymousreply 10June 7, 2022 10:54 PM

^I didn't mean documentary but I said documentary because I'm watching one.

by Anonymousreply 11June 7, 2022 10:54 PM

Accepting this part is just as likely to destroy her career as it is to make it. She’s already done some great work and is well on her way to Oscar gold. Madonna is a frightful actress, but she’s an even worse director - W/E anyone? Not to mention, she lacks any ability to be objective and could very well torpedo what might otherwise be an interesting biopic. If I were Julia and/or her agents I would think long and hard about whether or not accepting this is the right call. Hopefully they’ve seen the entire script and not just a few sides.

by Anonymousreply 12June 7, 2022 10:58 PM

[quote] There isn’t very much that’s terribly interesting about Madonna’s life story, actually.

Don't forget the scenes of Madonna in the back of her limo trolling Spanish Harlem for dick every day in the late 1980s. that'll be interesting.

by Anonymousreply 13June 7, 2022 11:01 PM

[quote] Don't forget the scenes of Madonna in the back of her limo trolling Spanish Harlem for dick every day in the late 1980s.

That's the first thing I think of when I think of Madonna's life story-- and I'm a straight woman!

by Anonymousreply 14June 7, 2022 11:04 PM

R14 That was debunked a LONG time ago.

I don’t trust current Madonna. Something is going on mental health wise. She isn’t the same person she was. That being said, the movie company is very happy with the script and Madonna does have skills directing. That chick that played Wallis was considered an Oscar favorite for W/E.

by Anonymousreply 15June 7, 2022 11:10 PM

CBGB early 1980s. I witnessed the making of Madonna. She really wanted to be the up front singing and performing one night and was repeatedly told no. The argument got pretty heated and I'm not sure who he was, but the guy screamed at her "the music business is a man's world. A woman will never dominate the business". I saw it in her eyes, Madonna was born that night and showed them all.

by Anonymousreply 16June 7, 2022 11:13 PM

R15 W/E received something like a 12% on Rotten Tomatoes. Madonna’s direction was eviscerated (shaky shots, disastrous use of music, etc) and there was never Oscar buzz for any of it - other than maybe the costumes, which Madonna had nothing to do with.

by Anonymousreply 17June 7, 2022 11:16 PM

[quote] [R14] That was debunked a LONG time ago.

So what? That's what we want to see!

by Anonymousreply 18June 7, 2022 11:22 PM

From that bio of Madonna:

Songwriter Andy Paley, who has worked extensively with Paul Simon and Brian Wilson, went to her Los Angeles home on numerous occasions while they were working on the soundtrack for Dick Tracy, the 1990 film directed by her lover, Warren Beatty. For four hours at a stretch she would focus entirely on the creative process, waving away her secretary and others. 'She puts the blinkers on when she is working,' he says. 'All outside distractions are forgotten. We sat at the pianoand she would tap out the rhythm. She wants to feel that she can dance to any song she records. That's her test.' Paley and other writers, including her first producer Mark Kamins, reckon that Madonna is one of the best in the business, a much underrated musician and lyricist. 'She is the easiest person I know to write songs with,' Paley says. 'She has a very clear vision, the most direct person you will ever work with.

Andy Paley, who has worked with two of the most acclaimed songwriters of all time says Madonna is among the best songwriters in the business. This is supported by the others she has worked with who say the same thing.

by Anonymousreply 21June 7, 2022 11:25 PM

R17 STFU. The reviews also said she had some serious potential if she’d lose the gimmicks when directing.

by Anonymousreply 22June 7, 2022 11:28 PM

Unfortunately she has passed away R20.

by Anonymousreply 23June 7, 2022 11:28 PM

R23 I know…very sad. She was excellent in that movie.

by Anonymousreply 24June 7, 2022 11:30 PM

R20 OMG she did die. How? I see no cause of death. Very sad. That was a really good insight into early Madonna. At times she looked just like her.

Damn, just 26!

by Anonymousreply 25June 7, 2022 11:38 PM

The only thing I've seen about her cause of death R25 was complications from an eating disorder. Not sure if that's true or not, but the only thing I've seen as the cause of her death.

by Anonymousreply 26June 7, 2022 11:46 PM

W/E was fine and panned because it was Madonna. If Tom Ford had done it exactly the same it would have been praised. That said, Madonna should not direct this film unless she’s willing to go really gritty with it. She won’t.

by Anonymousreply 27June 7, 2022 11:50 PM

Do we think this is actually getting made? So many biopics announce casting and then disappear into thin air.

by Anonymousreply 28June 7, 2022 11:50 PM

I love Julia!

by Anonymousreply 29June 8, 2022 12:19 AM

This is a huge huge role and I think they’ve made a massive mistake by choosing this veryugly woman. Is she even talented? 🙄🙄

by Anonymousreply 30June 8, 2022 12:39 AM

by Anonymousreply 36June 8, 2022 12:51 AM

The actress who played Madonna in the bio pic “The Breakfast Club” was perfect. She nailed it and really got her look and nuances down.

by Anonymousreply 37June 8, 2022 12:52 AM

Playing the director’s literal stand-in in their own film is something I’d encourage any honest actor to avoid. They don’t have the objectivity to help craft a balanced portrayal.

Why doesn’t Madonna play herself?

by Anonymousreply 38June 8, 2022 2:02 AM

R37 And then she died.

by Anonymousreply 39June 8, 2022 2:04 AM

[quote]R21 Andy Paley, who has worked with two of the most acclaimed songwriters of all time says Madonna is among the best songwriters in the business. This is supported by the others she has worked with who say the same thing.

And that sounds like the makings of a really boring movie.

by Anonymousreply 46June 8, 2022 3:50 AM

by Anonymousreply 47June 8, 2022 4:51 AM

Much better choice than this Barbie Fer-whatever who also being "considered" to play Madonna.

I'm sure it was just to appease the screaming Tumblr retards, now WOKE SJWs who would cried bloody murder if only skinny blonde women were being considered to play a skinny blonde woman.

by Anonymousreply 48June 8, 2022 4:53 AM

Interesting casting. Who's the director again?

by Anonymousreply 49June 8, 2022 5:01 AM

Mark my words, Madonna will destroy this movie with her ego and narcissism. As others have said, she will not go gritty, she will rewrite history, she will paint herself as a feminist martyr instead of the fame-addicted attention seeker she was/is. Everything will be about how she is a woman in a man's world and I guarantee the line "Would it sound better if I were a man?" is in the script.

But Madonna's ego and antics will prevent this film from being finished. She'll cry she is being censored and not supported and wah wah wah.

Julia should focus on other projects which will help her thriving career; this film won't.

by Anonymousreply 50June 8, 2022 5:02 AM

I'm still disappointed they didn't go with Sky Ferreira

by Anonymousreply 51June 8, 2022 5:14 AM

R48 it was Alexa Demie. Barbie Ferreira is her castmate on Euphoria

by Anonymousreply 52June 8, 2022 5:15 AM

the acting in the movie is what I prefer so she’ll definitely work in my book. She’s a talented actress. I can not stomach a film with bad acting, especially a biopic.(cough cough lifetime).

by Anonymousreply 53June 8, 2022 5:20 AM

R51 1000%

by Anonymousreply 54June 8, 2022 5:21 AM

This film will either be brilliant or an epic failure. Madonna seems to NOW to have a biopic. Though she hasn't had a hit in a while, she just still feels too current. I love Madge so I hope this film is a success. Elton John doesn't feel current so that was partially why his film was a success. Most of the good music biopic the stars are dead.

I hope Madge has one more massive hit before she retires into old old age. Just to shit on the haters on DL. She's not a great actress but she is brilliant pop stars. There would be no Queen Bey. No Rihanna, no gaga if not for Madge.

by Anonymousreply 55June 8, 2022 5:25 AM

Madonna has never succeeded at anything outside of music and this movie will be an epic failure. I hope that Julia has the good sense to stay far away from this disaster flick.

by Anonymousreply 56June 8, 2022 5:29 AM

Can’t wait to hear what accent she gives her Madonna characterisation.

by Anonymousreply 57June 8, 2022 5:30 AM

Why isn't Madonna playing herself? She would be great!

by Anonymousreply 58June 8, 2022 5:30 AM

I get what you’re saying r55 i agree. I think her biopic can work. I do hope she doesn’t have too much of a hand in the process because I feel like those biopics have a tendency to be terrible. We want to see struggles, drama. Biopics are better when people die.

by Anonymousreply 59June 8, 2022 5:34 AM

[quote] I do hope she doesn’t have too much of a hand in the process

She's directing the film and collaborating on the screenplay.

So, her hands are all over it.

by Anonymousreply 60June 8, 2022 5:53 AM

Ick.

by Anonymousreply 61June 8, 2022 5:59 AM

I don't know why DL hates Madge. She's not pretentious. She was doing all this shit before it was cool to do so. When she came out with Vogue and embraced gay rights, most pop females were doing love ballads or Sinead O'Connor. Alternative as fuck; I was only 2 yrs old but I know my music history. Plus she actually has bangers, she's not a natural gifted 4 octave vocalist but she's solid.

by Anonymousreply 62June 8, 2022 6:03 AM

Julia Garner is much prettier than Madonna.

by Anonymousreply 67June 8, 2022 6:52 AM

If she’s director it’s a no for me. And Julia should decline while her career is gaining momentum. Madonna is too delusional to direct even though it’s her life.

R63 Yeah she's really not

by Anonymousreply 69June 8, 2022 6:57 AM

by Anonymousreply 70June 8, 2022 7:59 AM

R55, I think most DLers love Madonna. Or respect her (I know I do, even though I've never been a big fan minus a few songs.) But I'd love her to have another big hit!

by Anonymousreply 71June 8, 2022 8:47 AM

[quote]This has the potential for camp classic.

Well, if Garner wasn't tripping over herself before, she is now.

by Anonymousreply 72June 8, 2022 9:39 AM

[quote] Madonna seems to NOW to have a biopic. Though she hasn't had a hit in a while, she just still feels too current.

My sides! Madonna hasn't been "now" or "current" since Ray of Light. She was hanging on a thread with Music and Confessions. And the era people want to see are the early 80s to her peak in the early 90s.

by Anonymousreply 73June 8, 2022 10:00 AM

Madonna is such a sociopath. This will be full of mythomania. False narrative. Like, for example, arriving in Times Square in NYC not knowing anyone. Her fucking brother lived in NYC. But just the idea that she'll present a version of her story totally devoid of her shadowy side is gross. Is this seriously going to play like midwest innocent makes it in music? Should be sociopathic whore (with absolutely no regrets or guilt about any of her skank behavior). fucks her mediocre ass to fame through cheap shock tactics and brilliant men and women she used.

by Anonymousreply 75June 8, 2022 12:44 PM

I agree with whoever said above that when push comes to shove Madonna’s story just isn’t that interesting. It’s a story of a grinding work ethic and grinding ambition. Boring. It would only be an interesting movie if it was rawly honest about how cold and cruel Madonna can be and that will never happen—it goes without saying— if she’s in charge of it. Truth or Dare was Madonna’s biopic so it’s already been done, really.

by Anonymousreply 76June 8, 2022 12:51 PM

It should be about her arrival in NYC to the release of Like A Prayer. Then the sequel can deal with the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 77June 8, 2022 1:03 PM

R55 How could it possibly be “brilliant?” The only way that could ever happen is if it focused on a dark theme…fame at all costs. Sweet Smell of Success, etc.

But she is creating it and directing it and you know it’s just going to be a bloated biopic chronicling all her career highs and recreating her costumes and hair, as well as the looks of the era.

We’ll get her her childhood/ mom dying origins story, then travel to the late 70s and early 80s in NYC, then her breaking through and probably ending with Blonde Ambition.

by Anonymousreply 78June 8, 2022 1:24 PM

Don’t forget about her rape.

by Anonymousreply 79June 8, 2022 1:26 PM

Why doesn’t she use Lourdes in it? Has she no faith in her own daughter?

by Anonymousreply 80June 8, 2022 6:50 PM

by Anonymousreply 90June 9, 2022 1:58 PM

I don’t understand the Julia is ugly comments. She’s really quite stunning. And with makeup, she’d probably be a dead ringer for Madonna.

But she’s too good of an actor to waste on a Madonna bio!! No matter how good she is in it, she’s gonna get a razzie nomination. Hopefully two weeks into shooting, there are some “creative differences” or a faked injury and she leaves the project.

by Anonymousreply 91June 9, 2022 6:23 PM

#Justice4Lourdes!

by Anonymousreply 92June 9, 2022 7:09 PM

There will not be a sequel. It should cover her childhood briefly, then segue to her moving to New York. It should cover her marriage and divorce with Sean Penn. I'm not sure where or how it should end, but keeping it confined to the 80s would help define the style of the film while streamlining the narrative. We don't need to see 90s Madonna; the Sex book, Evita, Ray of Light -- these won't be interested on film, and they'd probably derail the film, which would be quite bloated if it included an entire second decade.

The 80s were her heyday, especially in retrospect. She helped define the era, and it largely defined her, too. It's a very popular decade with nostalgia buffs and it offers an instantly recognizable aesthetic that will play well to modern audiences of all ages.

by Anonymousreply 93June 9, 2022 7:14 PM

Who plays elderly Madonna?

by Anonymousreply 94June 9, 2022 7:19 PM

I like Madonna a lot. She’s been one of the best stars of all time. Love her voice and her songwriting. Everything.

Sadly, the Madonna right now has a huge chance to fuck this up. The only hope I have is the studio seems happy with the script and decisions behind the scenes.

Julia is a bit of a surprising pick, and it seems Madonna really likes her, but Julia has that spark, that edge. F Pugh does as well. I don’t know how she will do this with the person she is playing directing. Fuck.

by Anonymousreply 95June 9, 2022 11:28 PM

R91, what makes her pretty? Just wondering

by Anonymousreply 96June 9, 2022 11:49 PM

[quote]R95 Julia is a bit of a surprising pick, and it seems Madonna really likes her, but Julia has that spark, that edge.

Unless she’s a closet Madonna megafan, I beg dear Julia Garner to keep well out of this tacky mess. She’s very respected as an actress, and a stupid bio pic about a pop star who did nothing but top the charts would be a misstep.

by Anonymousreply 97June 10, 2022 1:50 AM

Jesus Christ. Another round of her painting me out to be some evil villain. What a fucking boring, predictable cunt.

by Anonymousreply 99June 10, 2022 7:32 AM

R85: shows how homely Madonna was even when young.

by Anonymousreply 100June 10, 2022 7:37 AM

Garner is better looking than Madonna, when she wants to be. Her body is too slender to play what’s essentially a stripper, however.

The role is beneath her at this point, anyhow.

by Anonymousreply 101June 10, 2022 9:04 AM

Yes, the role is beneath some Netflix actress to play the woman who became the most successful female solo artist of all time. Gotta love the Faux News mentality.

by Anonymousreply 102June 10, 2022 2:04 PM

Early Madonna was sly and playful and likeable, something I don't think any of these actresses fully capture. I caught a video of comedian Taylor Tomlinson and thought, if she could act, she might make a good Madonna. She was those qualities. Her body and face could also pull it off, too.

But even if she could act, Madonna would never cast her. She's not well known and Madonna, in her current incarnation, is a clout chasing thirst bucket.

by Anonymousreply 104June 10, 2022 2:35 PM

by Anonymousreply 105June 10, 2022 3:22 PM

The insane Madonna bashing is off the charts. STFU troll. “The role is so beneath her and it is essentially a stripper role because Madonna has annihilated MY favorite diva and my fragile psyche cannot handle it. Madonna’s getting attention and my tears flow like raging rivers. I must MUST convince those at DL she is the worst WORST because I cannot enjoy life if Madonna, whose legacy MY favorite will never come close to, is getting attention and all of young HW wants to play her!!!!”

Julia is nowhere near as naturally beautiful as Madonna but with make up she can be. This is a role that will be very difficult. If Julia pulls this off, she will win an Oscar

by Anonymousreply 106June 10, 2022 10:00 PM

But Madonna is a joke in the film industry, r106. And with movie audiences. Any film professional who gets onboard with her in any capacity (beside hiring her to sing a theme song) is committing career suicide.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 107June 11, 2022 5:15 AM

Madonna was great once. She got through her overexposure from the early 90s (Blonde Ambition, Sex, Body of Evidence, Justify My Love) and managed to become cool during her Kaballah Ray of Light Tom Ford phase. Music (the single) was a fun blip towards the end of that period but then she really began trying to attach herself to younger/more relevant entertainers and she began to seem like a succubus / trying too hard.

But her absolute Achilles heel is her desperation for legitimate movie stardom. She is a TERRIBLE actress. From Who’s That Girl to Body of Evidence and especially The Next Best Thing and Swept Away she is just awful. She is an extremely self conscious actress who seems to think that a persona-such as she would adopt in a 3 minute video-is all acting is. She has been tolerable in supporting roles…but more in the sense of lowered expectations being met as opposed to anything approaching talent. Being desperate is not a good look. Now, with her behavior on social media, her narcissism is running rampant and she looks absolutely ridiculous.
