by Anonymousreply 117June 18, 2022 4:49 PM

Why do we need to hear from him on this issue?

by Anonymousreply 1June 7, 2022 7:23 PM

He never looked the same after losing all that weight for Dallas Buyer's Club. It destroyed his beauty. Oh well, at least he got and Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 2June 7, 2022 7:24 PM

oxymoron

by Anonymousreply 3June 7, 2022 7:27 PM

He looks kind of like Peter Fonda now. Those glasses really suck.

by Anonymousreply 4June 7, 2022 7:27 PM

I love him.

You go, Matt!

by Anonymousreply 5June 7, 2022 7:28 PM

Guns don't kill people, 2-year-olds kill people.

by Anonymousreply 6June 7, 2022 8:07 PM

He's “all right, all right, all right”.

by Anonymousreply 7June 7, 2022 8:09 PM

Average looking AVERAGE actor.

by Anonymousreply 8June 7, 2022 8:49 PM

Uvalde is his hometown.

by Anonymousreply 9June 7, 2022 8:52 PM

I think if a home-grown Texan can speak some reason on this matter, it can't hurt. He's not wrong in this. Maybe it will help.

by Anonymousreply 10June 7, 2022 8:57 PM

Don't dismiss him on this. This isn't just another actor or celebrity talking on an issue. This guy is fairly conservative. He lives in Texas. He's from Uvalde. He's a gun owner. And his talk was incredibly powerful. Maybe he can really help.

by Anonymousreply 11June 7, 2022 9:03 PM

He has a political future if he wants one.

by Anonymousreply 12June 7, 2022 9:07 PM

Hopefully he can help. It’s not a partisan issues anymore. It’s a serious national issue. He has had weird plastic surgery but I applaud him for speaking out!

by Anonymousreply 13June 7, 2022 9:09 PM

I've always found him repulsive, can't watch his movies. I'm glad he's speaking tho

by Anonymousreply 14June 7, 2022 9:29 PM

Thank you above for explaining why this subject touches him. I had no idea.

by Anonymousreply 15June 7, 2022 9:31 PM

FFS, I didn't know MM had it in him. He had me in tears. Just a blistering speech. The little girl's green shoes. Gut wrenching.

by Anonymousreply 16June 7, 2022 10:05 PM

I thought his talk was good but also maudlin. How could it not be maudlin? So horrible.

by Anonymousreply 17June 7, 2022 10:26 PM

R17 - are you unable to distinguish between "maudlin" and "genuine sentiment?"

by Anonymousreply 18June 7, 2022 10:31 PM

In your simple opinion, no I cannot. I believe they can coexist in the same gesture.

by Anonymousreply 19June 7, 2022 10:59 PM

More stunt aspiring "politicians" we don't need.

by Anonymousreply 20June 7, 2022 11:03 PM

Good for him.

by Anonymousreply 21June 7, 2022 11:04 PM

Have the MAGAts and Fox hosts called for his execution? They must really despise him for this.

by Anonymousreply 22June 7, 2022 11:06 PM

They’re debating the age a young person must be to buy a weapon designed to kill as fast as possible the greatest number of people. This is being debated!!! Kind of like how big an atomic bomb are we gonna drop (just a small one) Or let’s admit every other person to the ER to save money. The Republican Party is a combination of evil and outright madness. The rest of the advanced nations in the world think we are mad as hatters. The GOP and it’s enablers certainly are: Human self destruction on an institutionalized basis.

by Anonymousreply 23June 7, 2022 11:07 PM

[quote] He has a political future if he wants one.

He was thinking about running for governor last year. I don't care either way about him-- if he can bring about change, more power to him.

by Anonymousreply 24June 7, 2022 11:08 PM

I hope he'll run against Cruz.

by Anonymousreply 25June 7, 2022 11:11 PM

PS, anything that can turn our. Political will against these monstrous enablers and political party is fine with me.

by Anonymousreply 26June 7, 2022 11:13 PM

That's a good idea, r25.

by Anonymousreply 27June 7, 2022 11:13 PM

He sounded Presidential to me. I've not heard such an intelligent, well thought out speech in the White House since President Obama.

by Anonymousreply 28June 8, 2022 12:01 AM

How does "a well-regulated militia" translate into "any single person can own an arsenal of weapons?"

by Anonymousreply 29June 8, 2022 12:18 AM

Did Lauren Boebert flash her boobs at him?

by Anonymousreply 30June 8, 2022 12:21 AM

He's prepping for governor of Texas at some point in the future...

by Anonymousreply 31June 8, 2022 12:24 AM

His heartfelt words can never replace the blood money the stooges in Congress receive from the gun lobbyists. It's very heartening to know when we are murdered the stooges will give us their thoughts and prayers.

by Anonymousreply 32June 8, 2022 12:27 AM

Twitter's overrun with rightwing gun nuts trashing McConaughey. He kicked the hornet's nest!

by Anonymousreply 33June 8, 2022 12:44 AM

Moron.

And he doesn't wear deodorant.

Go away

by Anonymousreply 34June 8, 2022 12:45 AM

Another celebrity thinking they are a politician.

by Anonymousreply 35June 8, 2022 12:45 AM

He's from Uvalde so that school shooting literally hits home for him. I'm glad he's using his platform to speak out.

by Anonymousreply 36June 8, 2022 12:47 AM

She looks like she’s gearing up to run for Secretary of State.

by Anonymousreply 37June 8, 2022 12:47 AM

Golly, head back to Twitter NRA trolls. You're wasted on the DL.

by Anonymousreply 38June 8, 2022 12:47 AM

Oh look, defucker posted r34 and then switched his IP and posted r35 to agree with himself.

No matter what his IP, he’s ug LEE.

by Anonymousreply 39June 8, 2022 12:51 AM

I'm glad he said something and that President Biden gave him that opportunity.

by Anonymousreply 40June 8, 2022 12:51 AM

He didn't even write those words.

Props to whoever wrote the script though.

by Anonymousreply 41June 8, 2022 12:54 AM

R22, I'm from the south so I have quite a few conservative "friends" on Facebook. Yes they are denouncing him with the usual shit about actors having political opinions. They don't seem to realize that they elected a game show host president.

by Anonymousreply 42June 8, 2022 12:56 AM

Nothing has worked up until now. If he can make a difference, so be it. If Soupy Sales or Lorena Bobbit or George Washington or my idiot neighbor who I despise can make a difference, let them go for it. Nothing rational, sensible or sane has helped. Things need to change. I am beyond thinking this will work itself soon. Go Matthew.

by Anonymousreply 43June 8, 2022 12:56 AM

[quote]Another celebrity thinking they are a politician.

Why do idiots like you act like celebrities getting involved in politics is something new? So I guess it was OK when Charlton Heston became the head of the fucking NRA, right? And that was long after he was a part of the civil rights movement.

I guess it was OK when a FOREIGN-born actor became governor of a state he couldn't even pronounce and the same fuckers who scream about "celebrities," wanted to change the god damned constitution so Arnold could run. And Clint "talks to empty chairs" Eastwood became a mayor and Sonny Bono became a congressman. And the stupidest fucking clown celebrity became president.

Gee, what do they all have in common besides being celebrities? What party did they all represent?

by Anonymousreply 44June 8, 2022 1:02 AM

Our future President.

by Anonymousreply 45June 8, 2022 1:06 AM

It was a great speech and I love how Republicunts are losing their shit over it

by Anonymousreply 46June 8, 2022 1:09 AM

It was a great speech and I love how Republicunts are losing their shit over it

by Anonymousreply 47June 8, 2022 1:10 AM

He's so weird now and NO LONGER ATTRACTIVE.

by Anonymousreply 48June 8, 2022 1:12 AM

But, but, but Cons LOVE IT when Kid Rick, Ted Nugent, Kirstie Alley, or Krusty Swanson spews shit all over social media!

by Anonymousreply 49June 8, 2022 1:13 AM

[quote]Yes they are denouncing him with the usual shit about actors having political opinions.

No, they believe anyone who expresses a moderate or liberal view is not entitled to a political opinion. I assume they think Joe Rogan is entitled to a political opinion. Conservatives are just hypocritical cunts.

by Anonymousreply 50June 8, 2022 1:13 AM

R11 so we’re supposed to listen to this dumbass because he has put in writing that he hates Libs.

by Anonymousreply 51June 8, 2022 1:17 AM

I detest him but and very happy he’s using his celebrity and conservative credentials to take a stand for gun safety

by Anonymousreply 52June 8, 2022 1:23 AM

[Quote] . If Soupy Sales…

My god, how old ARE you?

by Anonymousreply 53June 8, 2022 1:23 AM

R49 you forgot me!!!

by Anonymousreply 54June 8, 2022 1:28 AM

I watched a clip of his speech and he basically did a "both sides do it"--why can't Congress agree on this? No dumbass, it is the Republicans. He's just craven and will use this to run for Texas Governor. I won't take McBongo seriously until he specifically calls out the Republicans for their obstruction for the last two decades.

by Anonymousreply 55June 8, 2022 1:29 AM

I resent R53's implications

by Anonymousreply 56June 8, 2022 1:30 AM

R41 McConaughey wrote a book in 2020 which stayed on the NYTimes bestseller list forever.

"Matthew McConaughey's memoir Greenlights topped Amazon's best sellers list this week (July 2021) and has remained on the best-seller lists since its October 2020 release—outlasting other recent high-profile memoirs—highlighting the actor's enduring popularity as he weighs a potential run for Texas governor." It's written in the same quirky style as his speech. Definitely his own work.

by Anonymousreply 57June 8, 2022 1:32 AM

Amy Klobuchar was on Chris Hayes. She and a couple of other Democratic Senators and several Republican Senators had dinner with McConaughey and his wife last night. She said he was a useful voice because he maintains a centrist, non-partisan voice and could get both sides talking without falling back on attacking each other as usually happens.

I think McConaughey is one of those mythical "independents" both Dems and GOP are desperate to court.

by Anonymousreply 58June 8, 2022 1:38 AM

The gun nuts are going crazy because MM is "one of their own" i.e. a white guy from Texas with a redneck image. Good for him to stick it to them and call for sensible gun laws.

Americans are fed up with the gun nut segment of the population.

by Anonymousreply 59June 8, 2022 1:40 AM

R53: you only caught the Soupy Sales part and not the George Washington part? So in light of your question…how dumb are YOU?

by Anonymousreply 60June 8, 2022 1:55 AM

He had met with the dead kid's families. That must have been tough.

by Anonymousreply 61June 8, 2022 2:13 AM

If MM can persuade change to happen, I’m all for it. I don’t care if he’s a closet case or a self-professed conservative. I’ll happily take any influence for progress on this issue.

by Anonymousreply 67June 8, 2022 3:14 AM

It was powerful and meaningful because that’s his hometown and he’s a gun owner. We need more (responsible) gun owners coming out against this insanity.

I think every gun should be blown to pieces, but we’re never going to get rid of the stupid 2nd Amendment. But there is no reason in hell why automatic firearms should be legal.

by Anonymousreply 68June 8, 2022 4:03 AM

The Second Amendment is a relic from a long-ago time. It is not applicable to modern society. But as r68 said we're never going to get rid of it, as outdated as it is.

Other countries such as Australia weren't burdened with such an archaic out-of-date law and were able to do something to get automatic weapons taken care of.

by Anonymousreply 69June 8, 2022 4:07 AM

R35, what are the qualifications and training for a politician? Can you phase let us know. Reagan was an actor- a pretty mediocre one too!

by Anonymousreply 70June 8, 2022 4:08 AM

I think it's great he used his platform for something good. Hey the repubs can't complain when they elected broke criminal reality "star" Trump

but damn the Texan accent is SOOOOO ugly

by Anonymousreply 71June 8, 2022 5:34 AM

He really does have the ugliest voice ever.

by Anonymousreply 72June 8, 2022 5:38 AM

McConaughey would far better serve the future of his children and the American people by promoting national programs to reduce/eliminate the culture of rage, anger and mindless violence in America.

by Anonymousreply 73June 8, 2022 5:39 AM

R66 fuck off back to Breitbart. McConaughey never described himself as a conservative. He said he was "aggressively centrist". And you're on the DL, Trumpnik. We've discussed McBongo for 20 years and never found any believable rumors he's gay or bi. And Gawd knows, we've tried. Only Matt Damon has been the object of more wishful thinking.

by Anonymousreply 74June 8, 2022 6:03 AM

Yeah!

by Anonymousreply 75June 8, 2022 6:31 AM

I don't understand why the entire Democratic Party in Washington has immediately conceded defeat and is negotiating "seriously" "in good faith" with REFUGS for an increase from 18 to 21 for buying assault weapons to mow down innocent civilians. Its barely a baby step. Also, Chuck Schumer is USELESS!!!!!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 76June 8, 2022 7:47 AM

Annoying Hollywood fairy desperate for a 'job' with the usury satanists who own the NY Federal Reserve Bank?

by Anonymousreply 77June 8, 2022 8:11 AM

Just say “Jews”, r77

You fuckers are so transparent

by Anonymousreply 78June 8, 2022 8:22 AM

He looked like a damn fool. WTF...I voted for Biden ---I would have voted for anyone but Twitter Clown Trump---but honestly this is really one fucked up Administration. BTS and now McConaughey at the White House...Last week Biden fumbled the baby formula shortage (nobody told me)...Then he seemed to think Build Back Better might still happen (wrong again, Grampa--just like the other 9 times you said that)...I honestly thought Kamala was going to be proactive and out front....

by Anonymousreply 79June 8, 2022 8:25 AM

R60- Fuck you, you forgot ME!

by Anonymousreply 80June 8, 2022 8:52 AM

I do not care for him because he is a republican (and has poor personal hygiene) I respect anyone who can help with this. He must be doing something right because he has certainly pissed off the morally bankrupt republican mafia family.

by Anonymousreply 81June 8, 2022 9:01 AM

If you really believe your guns protect democracy, donate them to Ukraine.

by Anonymousreply 82June 8, 2022 9:01 AM

R82- I have two words for idiots that believe that: Military drones.

by Anonymousreply 83June 8, 2022 9:04 AM

As others noted, good on him for fighting the good fight and for whatever his motives (or personal hygiene) nothing else has worked, so why not? But I do hope he *stays* with the fight & doesn't just recede into the background when he doesn't get immediate results (which he won't)

by Anonymousreply 84June 8, 2022 9:08 AM

The second amendment is about the only thing standing between you and Shanghai 2022

by Anonymousreply 85June 8, 2022 9:10 AM

Good on him.

by Anonymousreply 86June 8, 2022 9:15 AM

He is ugly. Used to be a hot daddy. Now he is just too ugly.

by Anonymousreply 87June 8, 2022 9:37 AM

Whatever plastic surgery he had done is even worse than Madonna’s.

by Anonymousreply 88June 8, 2022 9:54 AM

For Miss r78......the criminals who own the central banks are not children of Abraham and Isaac They are of Khazar/Turkish origin and became 'Jews' for convenience in the 10th century AD They are false Jews who scream anti-Semitism to excuse their crimes against humanity

by Anonymousreply 89June 8, 2022 9:55 AM

R78

R77 R89 is DL's resident Jew-hating cunt Erna. Who learned her Jew hatred from Dominican? Benedictine? priests murmuring it into her ear while they were furiously fucking her 8 year old fat ass. Learned well from those Catholic kiddie diddling scum, didn't ya, you fetid cunt!

by Anonymousreply 90June 8, 2022 10:03 AM

Miss r90 has serious anger issues!

by Anonymousreply 91June 8, 2022 10:23 AM

What kind of country tolerates people taking military grade guns to go to the supermarket? It’s mad.

by Anonymousreply 94June 8, 2022 11:04 AM

R94 Oh don't worry. We are going to make big changes to stop this. All teachers will have rifles, the schools will be "hardened", the supermarkets will be "hardened", in fact all public accommodations will be "hardened" - with retired military at every entrance, and we are going to put a very strict age requirement of 21 to easily and legally buy weapons of mass destruction. Fixed it!

by Anonymousreply 95June 8, 2022 11:08 AM

R95: Don't forget us! Yee Haw!

by Anonymousreply 96June 8, 2022 11:14 AM

Hand grenades in Christmas stockings!

Bazookas for Bar Mitzvah!

Bayonets at Menarche!

Bullets for blinking and ammo for exhaling!

by Anonymousreply 97June 8, 2022 11:15 AM

r94 it is complete insanity.

by Anonymousreply 98June 8, 2022 2:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 99June 8, 2022 2:28 PM

EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE HARDENED like a our big hard Republican cocks.

by Anonymousreply 100June 8, 2022 2:35 PM

R73 I agree there is a deep cultural sickness. The rage in this country is so abnormal. But multiple things can be addressed at the same time.

by Anonymousreply 101June 8, 2022 2:38 PM

[quote] What kind of country tolerates people taking military grade guns to go to the supermarket?

A country with a 244 year old culture of rage, anger and mindless violence.

by Anonymousreply 102June 8, 2022 2:42 PM

[quote] But multiple things can be addressed at the same time.

R101 Cure the disease first; America's entrenched culture of raging anger and mindless violence. The rest will follow, and far more easily.

by Anonymousreply 103June 8, 2022 2:44 PM

r103, no mention of easy access to guns? FAIL.

by Anonymousreply 104June 8, 2022 4:46 PM

R11, Since when is Matthew McCouneny conservative. He's always been like a liberal hippie but from Texas so more libertarian.

by Anonymousreply 105June 8, 2022 4:57 PM

[quote]He really does have the ugliest voice ever.

Opinions vary.

by Anonymousreply 106June 8, 2022 7:07 PM

McConaughey's got a whole slew of NRA troll farms attacking him on Twitter. Beto must be breathing a sigh of relief. He's normally their target. They're getting scared shitless: GOP loses Texas, GOP is DEAD. Texas is their bulwark.

by Anonymousreply 107June 8, 2022 11:05 PM

he is one of those Republicans who smokes weed...so yes, a libertarian.

by Anonymousreply 108June 8, 2022 11:15 PM

The Texas GOP is the most extremist, NRA-oriented GOP in the US. By promoting gun control issues, he has knowingly attacked the entirety of the Texas GOP. I wouldn't be surprised to know he's been working with Beto. The two have met several times and been photographed together and Beto praised him when Seth Meyers interviewed Beto asking if he would give McBongo a job if Beto wins the Governorship.

by Anonymousreply 109June 8, 2022 11:20 PM

It would be incredible if Beto won Texas. That would be a huge sea change.

by Anonymousreply 110June 8, 2022 11:49 PM

Libertarians are not to be trusted. They're still Republicans.

by Anonymousreply 111June 9, 2022 12:00 AM

Libertarians are Republicans who feel they need just a little more attention for their repugnant beliefs and hypocrisy.

by Anonymousreply 112June 9, 2022 12:03 AM

Libertarians in the US are extreme rightwingers. McConaughey said he is "aggressively centrist".

by Anonymousreply 113June 9, 2022 12:19 AM

BTS...Matthew McConaughey...Next week Billy Elliot will be showing up at the podium to discuss Ukraine.

by Anonymousreply 114June 9, 2022 3:28 AM

McConaughey just hired a K Street lobbyist to lobby the Senate for gun control. He's not giving this up. I'm thinking he's preparing a run against Lying Ted Cancun Cruz in 2024. He has to hate Boebert's boyfriend as much as the rest of Texas does.

by Anonymousreply 115June 16, 2022 5:50 PM

Does Matty do anal?

by Anonymousreply 116June 18, 2022 1:15 PM

McConaughey put up a video clip of him and his wife meeting various Senators, Congressmen, the President. He met with Cory Booker, Grassley, Kevin McCarthy, Nancy Pelosi, Sinema, Manchin, Portman, Lindsey Graham, Klobuchar, Leahy, Sheila Jackson Lee, etc. He seems to be chiselling a division between Republicans and the teabaggers. No Ted Cruz, Hawley, Cotton or Blackburn.
