Indianapolis children's museum apologizes for stereotypes in Juneteenth menu

The "Juneteenth Watermelon Salad" was removed from the museum menu after a social media comment pointed out its ties to offensive stereotypes.

While watermelon is one of a number of foods that have been stereotyped as staples for Black people in the U.S., it was initially associated with poor Italians or Arabs, according to The Atlantic. It was linked to poverty, The Atlantic reported in 2014, as early as 1801, when a British officer stationed in Egypt called it a "poor Arab’s feast" and wrote about the peasants who ate the fruit as if it would be taken away.

The stereotype became more widespread in the U.S. after emancipation, when caricatures of freed slaves sought to paint Black people as ignorant and mindless, according to the Jim Crow Museum at Ferris State University in Michigan. Many of the racist cartoons showed them eating watermelon "with all their hopes, dreams, and fears sated by eating watermelons under the shade of great trees.

This shit seems to happen quite frequently. Can well-intentioned people really be this stupid or are they trolling?

by Anonymousreply 1June 7, 2022 3:59 PM

I like occasional watermelon, fried chicken , and cornbread. Meaningless white virtue signaling doesn't impress me.

by Anonymousreply 2June 7, 2022 4:05 PM

Another thread posted so the forum racists can have a fit. Watch as they gnash their teeth and rend their garments while shouting at full volume that watermelon can't be racist, they're white and they just had it for lunch.

I think white people probably make too big a thing out of things like this, but why does it keep happening? By this point if you are any kind of eating establishment and you decide to celebrate Black History Month, Juneteenth, or MLK Day by offering a special food item, it is pretty simple, no watermelon nor fried chicken.

Though in this case I would point out that watermelon is probably a traditional part of the Juneteenth celebrations. It is a summer holiday, from the South, that is usually celebrated with a BBQ or a cookout so watermelon is bound to be on hand for dessert. Just as it always is for the Fourth. I don't think I've ever not had watermelon on the Fourth.

One of the cruelest things white people have done is to give black people a complex about liking fried chicken and watermelon. You know who loves fried chicken and watermelon? Fucking everyone. But especially the Japanese.

by Anonymousreply 5June 7, 2022 4:30 PM

Yeah can we just celebrate this and soul food generally as great fucking food. Are Japanese restaurants stereotypes for serving sushi?

The Juneteenth missteps always make me giggle. I have to laugh at the awkwardness of it all, the condescending yet earnest attempts to reach out? Ha!

Juneteenth recognized as a bank holiday is much appreciated, we now have three day weekends recognized in May, June and July.

It gives us more time to enjoy the summer.

There us nothing wrong, racist, or unusual about featuring a watermelon salad on a summer menu. But to call it Juneteenth Watermelon Salad smacks of racism and is in extremely poor taste.

A watermelon salad served on arugula, with feta cheese and a drizzle of balsamic is delicious.

Was "Juneteenth" the beginning of ebonics?

by Anonymousreply 9June 13, 2022 2:19 PM

Indiana. Nuff said.

I appreciate the time off, feels great to chill out during the summer.

I went to the Indianapolis Children's Museum once as a stop on a road trip out west. I don't remember the museum at all, but I remember trying to get there. It's in a bad neighborhood and every time you have to stop at a light, the crackheads approach your car. I was horrified. Had I not already bought the tickets online, I think I would have kept on going and skipped it altogether. I will say, though, once you get into the parking garage everything is okay.

Here's a cookbook that includes watermelon dishes for Juneteenth. I think that watermelon is now part of culture more than a stereotype. Or it can be.

I guess Black-eyed peas is out of the question.

by Anonymousreply 15June 13, 2022 3:03 PM

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. What would woke white outrage cuntinas prefer? Watercress soup and finger sandwiches with the crust cut off?

by Anonymousreply 16June 13, 2022 4:12 PM

It's reminiscent of an incident that happened in a California all-girls school a few years ago.

It's so funny to me.

Walmart got raked over the coals for their Juneteenth ice cream because they just put random flavors together that had nothing to do with black people. People on Twitter wanted the ice cream to be sweet potato pie or watermelon flavored.

I worked in this museum and grew up going there. It’s a fantastic place to visit and work. It’s in a black neighborhood and does tons of outreach for the neighborhood kids. I’m sure they meant nothing by this salad and as I recall most of the chefs and restaurant staff were black. I left shithole Indiana 17 years ago and never looked back but I do love this museum. Fun fact: they have every single Star Wars toy from the original 3 films in an underground archive. They also have a Dihann Carroll as Julia doll that I coveted!

𝘞𝘰𝘬𝘦 white people did that. The masses never gave a damn about it.

by Anonymousreply 23January 17, 2023 5:49 AM

Sprinkle some gold leaf on the watermelon and charge $24 for it, problem solved.

by Anonymousreply 24January 17, 2023 8:44 AM

Irony: Watermelon is one of the most healthful foods we can eat.

Okay DLers, you gotta smarten up a little bit. You know damn well Juneteenth isn't in January. This was a troll post that's been bumped by a troll. Learn to ignore this meaningless culture wars troll bullshit.
