The age difference between Oliver and Elio is supposed to be ~10 years. And both boys are supposed to be Jewish.

Oliver is American and charms everyone in town with his easy out going manner. The Europeans all call him the Cowboy.

Elio is introverted, bookish and continental in his mannerism.

I like the way Luca cast one boy with dark hair and another boy with blond hair.

I think Timothee’s performance is remarkable. If he stays in the Elio role, then we’re recasting Oliver. Maybe Gregg Sulkin could do it

Having someone as tall and as all American jock-ish as AH was, on paper, good casting - it's just that, as we all know, AH onscreen appears to be at least 10 years too old for a master's student/TA that's supposed to be around 24-25.

Aaron Taylor Johnson may have been a bit more appropriate, still older appearing than TC but in a more sensible way. Even Aaron may have been a bit too skinny/wiry but someone in that age/appearance ballpark would have worked.

Oliver Jackson-Cohen. Bears a passing resemblance to AH, but is much better looking and more talented and a lot less insane, and can do a very good American accent. He'd be a great Ilya in a Man From UNCLE sequel too.

Providing this is an alternative universe where Gregg Sulkin doesn't posses the acting talent of a shopfront mannequin.

I pictured Aaron Tveit as Oliver as I read the book. He would have been perfect. Except, perhaps, for his nasolabial folds (a term I learned here on DL), he is younger looking by far than Armie Hammer, and I used to think he was Jewish. He would have been perfect.

I loved Armie Hammer in the role, but he was hampered by the underwritten Oliver. The book doesn't give us much of Oliver either, I do wish the movie had expanded his role. Armie and Timothee had even more crazy chemistry offscreen than they did onscreen.

But if we'd had to recast, I guess Aaron Taylor Johnson would have worked.

LOL Armie could barely manage the role as written, he literally had to have Luca show him video of other actors so he could copy them. He'd have been even worse in an expanded role

Hammer was fine.

I saw it. I enjoyed it. I thought the father was creepy and the parents broadly nuts, but Hammer was too old for his part. Not ruinously, but noticeably.

The parents were freaks. It wasn't like this in the novel. In the book mum wasn't aware of the relationship and dad revealed only later that he was aware of the love story, with his speech, which was less solemn in the novel. The age difference wasn't that big, Oliver was very young too. The movie parents seemed creepy letting an older guy having sex with thier underage son.

Don Murray was better with it in Endless Love.

I was seduced by a man in his late 30s when I was 17 (Actually, I think I seduced him!) Whatever it was, I loved his muscles and his chest hair and the feeling of his stubble on my face. I felt that those kinds of things were missing from the movie. I would notice every little thing about him. His adams apple when he talked. The hair on his leg when his pant leg would rise up as he sat down. The way his forearm flexed when he gripped something. The gold flecks in his brown eyes. The outline of his dick in his pants!!! All that kind of stuff was missing from the film that would have given a more nuanced perspective of what it's like to surrender to your intense arousal toward an older man, as a horny teen.

^ That would make for a great memoir/fictionalized memoir in the right hands.

I can totally relate to your experience, as I too pursued older men as an extremely horny teen, and also zeroed in with laser-guided precision on those compelling, magnetic details of their anatomy that utterly fascinated me. CMBYN was more interested in documenting the scenery for some reason.

Armie was perfect casting, at least for me. I had a relationship in my early twenties with and older dude who resembled him during the exact same time period that the film was set, so the tall blond hunk with an invitingly furry chest in striped collar shirts and thigh revealing shorts made me have intense flashbacks.

Billy Porter. He could have rocked the 80e gender bending look and danced much better than Arnie to the Psychedelic Furs.
