Your thoughts on Adam Lambert?

I feel like Queen.2 recruited him to be their gay, "flamboyant" Freddie substitute. He's American Idol at best, and a fat, silly, if well-intentioned and mediocre stand-in for a tribute band. He's just awful; his pudgy, overly literal reenactment of "Killer Queen" some years ago at some other venue was an embarrassment. There was more to FM than gayness and eyeliner. I try but fail to hate Adam Lambert.... but... really? I blame Queen. I mean, he seems kinda sweet. I kind of hate him but feel the hatred is misplaced. Not sure what to do with this emotion (actually, yes I do... post it on DL). Replies welcome, encouraged, but hardly expected.

by Anonymousreply 87November 5, 2022 3:18 AM

George thinks he's great. I'm not so sure.

by Anonymousreply 1June 5, 2022 6:36 PM

I knew Adam when he was a kid -through high school. Very talented and a nice guy. No, he's not Freddy Mercury -but then, who is?

by Anonymousreply 2June 5, 2022 7:08 PM

I find him amusing and likeable. His vocal range exceeds Mercury's but lacks Freddie's textured style.

I saw Queen twice as a teen in the '70s and once with Adam in 2015. He has a great stage presence, and works well with Brian and Roger. He's much better than when Queen toured with Paul Rogers from Bad Company. When I heard they did an extended set of Bad Company songs, I didn't go.

Adam's great fun.

OP, your rant is pretty schizo. I can't even get what you're saying. Did you type this while drunk?

by Anonymousreply 4June 5, 2022 7:20 PM

Considering Freddie is an act you can't follow, Adam does good job. He is fun to watch on stage, and has a good chemistry with the rest of the band. He's is really enjoyable to watch live.

by Anonymousreply 5June 5, 2022 7:23 PM

He's trying to start a catfight over Freddie vs. Adam, which is quite tired. The fraufans do it in the comments of [bold]every[/bold] Adam/Queen YouTube video.

by Anonymousreply 6June 5, 2022 7:24 PM

He should have won that season of American Idol. He was the best vocalist there.

He sang to honor Cher at the Kennedy Center Honors a couple of years ago. I thought it was awesome:

by Anonymousreply 7June 5, 2022 7:24 PM

I loved him on Idol, and enjoyed how he and the cute straight guy (who won) became best friends. It was a good look, and a move toward representing tolerance.

I just wish Adam had come out earlier than he did. We all could tell, he was hiding in plain sight.

by Anonymousreply 8June 5, 2022 7:26 PM

I was just gonna post that R7. I think it really showcases his voice well.

by Anonymousreply 9June 5, 2022 7:26 PM

In other words, I'm in the minority (on DL). Thanks for the gratuitous "fraufan" diagnoses. It was a very specific question, which apparently flew over the American Idol fan(frau?) heads. That "argument" goes both ways.

by Anonymousreply 10June 5, 2022 7:36 PM

R10, it was not a specific question. It was a ramble. Go back and read it. LOL.

by Anonymousreply 11June 5, 2022 7:38 PM

he's boring.

by Anonymousreply 12June 5, 2022 7:39 PM

R12, how on earth is AL boring? You can say a lot about him, but that's a first.

by Anonymousreply 13June 5, 2022 7:40 PM

R11.... I did look back... And yeah, kinda busted. I guess I was expecting (or wanting) more shade. I still think he's a shallow stand-in.

by Anonymousreply 14June 5, 2022 7:42 PM

I have a younger brother who became a huge fan 9f Queen because of the " Wayne's World" movie and he is still a Queen fan even now. As his older Lesbian sister I know the vast majority of Queen's work. Adam Lambert is very respectful to Queen's songbook and harms nobody doing it at all. There was and will always be just the one Mercury and Lambert knows that.

Mika could very well have done it. He's the only other singer I'm aware of offhand who could have done it. My one younger brother disagrees with me on that. But, Mika was too gay for the American market (he missed the Queer boat by a few short years) and he has opera training. Tell me different.

Lambert earns his money. Harms nobody. Leave him be.

by Anonymousreply 15June 5, 2022 8:00 PM

R15 I'm leaving him be. I posted a rant on DL to send out a searchlight for kindred spirits. Not sure who "Mika" is. As an almost embarrassingly ardent fan of FM since I was a teenager, Lambert kind of offends my sensibilities in terms of Queen selecting him as a FM substitute. He's a perfectly fine AI performer. But cannot hold even a charred candle wick to the original. I guess my issue is that they selected a flamboyant, eyelinered, and (to me), soulless "campy/gay" replacement for somebody who couldn't be replaced. The only person I ever saw do justice to a Freddie Mercury song was George Michael, but I supposed it would have been indecent to unearth him.

by Anonymousreply 16June 5, 2022 8:23 PM

No, they should have unearthed George Michael.

by Anonymousreply 17June 5, 2022 8:26 PM

R7, I agree. I loved that performance.

by Anonymousreply 18June 5, 2022 8:27 PM

Wow, what a stupid post.

by Anonymousreply 19June 5, 2022 8:32 PM

Too much makeup, overly manicured hair and fat. Good voice.

by Anonymousreply 20June 6, 2022 1:46 AM

He's a blast from the distant past! Remember back when he starred in "From Justin to Kelly"?

Or was that someone else?

by Anonymousreply 21June 6, 2022 1:47 AM

He's obese and dull. Happy now r13/AL fangurl?

by Anonymousreply 22June 6, 2022 2:00 AM

Queen fan since the 70s here. Yes, I find AL boring. I really tried to like him, 100% on his own merits. (Obviously comparing him to Freddie wouldn't be fair.) But he's such a try-hard. How can someone so flamboyant end up being so uncharismatic?

I agree that Mika would have been a great choice. My dream would have been George Michael melding with Queen -- half the show Roger and Brian doing their arrangements of George's songs, and half George singing Freddie's songs. Of course that never could or would have happened, but George had the pipes and the ... charisma? personality? the je ne sais quoi -- I think the word I'm looking for is soul -- that the position required.

I'm not bothered that AL is touring with Queen. Millions love their shows. The band is happy, the fans are happy, so long may they reign. And we have lots of recordings and videos of Freddie to remember him by. But by my lights, the band was kaput the moment that Freddie died, and Deacon leaving was the stake through its heart.

The video below is Mika performing "Grace Kelly" live. He namechecks Freddie in the song too, as if you couldn't tell who is his biggest influence.

by Anonymousreply 25June 6, 2022 3:01 AM

I think Lambert is pretty spectacularly talented and I love that he gets chubby sometimes.

Who cares about the body fascists? Fuck the haters!

"Nessun Dorma," Bologna, 7/07/22.

by Anonymousreply 27July 12, 2022 9:17 PM

I agree about the Freddie Mercury thing. But Freddie himself was kind of ridiculous. Queen is before my time and I honestly think you had to be there. THEY are overrated. I'd rather listen to Pink Floyd.

Lambert has a pretty great voice - spectacular range and ability - power and resonance - but it's not all pleasant to listen too. He's naturally theatrical and therefore a good stand in for Mercury - But QUEEN are greedy old monsters and the whole concept of Tribute bands is creepy and tacky.

I was at this event. Adam sang this gorgeous George Michael cover. Adam's first hit song - that P!NK wrote was also really great for him. What Do You Want From Me? I like him better with a little rasp to his voice and not so much canyoudothefandango. Vocally - he's extremely gifted. And sexy in a kind of predatory way. Adam is NOT a bottom. Eyeliner works for him. No one was homelier than Freddie - who was thought to be sexy too. Lambert is actually handsome. Gay style.

by Anonymousreply 28July 13, 2022 12:04 AM

That version of Nessun Dorma was pretty great for someone who doesn't sing opera in his career.

by Anonymousreply 29July 13, 2022 12:13 AM

He's the best singer to emerge from any of those vocal competition shows. Who beat him for winner? WHET...?

by Anonymousreply 30July 13, 2022 3:29 AM

Ever since someone on DL pointed out the similarity, I can't think of Adam Lambert without thinking of Joanne Worley (although I guess he looks different now).

by Anonymousreply 31July 13, 2022 3:43 AM

Very talented but his voice has never be pleasing to my ears. Very musical theater and his voice can become harsh. But he had a huge range and star presence! Glad for his success!

by Anonymousreply 32July 13, 2022 3:47 AM

I'm waiting for Adam Lambert to die of AIDs

by Anonymousreply 33July 13, 2022 3:51 AM

You first, R33.

Be a leader not a follower!

by Anonymousreply 34July 13, 2022 3:52 AM

There's no reason for a gay man under 40 to die of AIDS. Or ever contract it. We've had PReP for almost a decade and NOW the bi-monthly Cabenuva! My sperm is copious and SWEET bad boy. Take it all IN. Let's FUCK.

Sorry to the ancient mean gays. Aka, R33.

by Anonymousreply 35July 13, 2022 4:12 AM

Good grief, simmer the fuck down. It was just a dark joke. That said, Lambert is just a American Idol -ized treatment of the real Freddie Mercury. Think Kidz Bop does Queen.

by Anonymousreply 36July 13, 2022 4:45 AM

Adam has the better voice, but no one can match Freddie’s presence.

by Anonymousreply 37July 13, 2022 4:54 AM

R36, that "joke" made you sound like a homophobic psychopath.

by Anonymousreply 38July 13, 2022 2:31 PM

Not a fan, but he's got some basic talent.

Queen would hire a robot as long as they keep cashing in on Freddie's legacy.

“He’s faaaaaaaat!”

Only on Datalounge

by Anonymousreply 43July 13, 2022 8:30 PM

Freddie Mercury was a hurricane of a talent. Fantastic song writer, gifted singer beyond the rock arena, and a very clever orchestrator/arranger.

To think that Bohemian Rhapsody will turn 50 in just a few years, and it is still considered as one of the greatest and defining works in rock history.

Like a poster above, Queen was way before my time — I was only 4 when Freddie left us much too soon. But my mother was/is a fan, my brother too, and the first time I heard Killer Queen, I was instantly hooked.

Sorry, long intro just to say: AL is no FM and he isn’t trying to be. Roger and Brian aren’t doing it for the money, they were already rich beyond their wildest dreams when Freddie was still around.

Like many old rockers, see Mick Jagger who is currently on tour, they simply wouldn’t know what else to do with their time.

by Anonymousreply 44July 13, 2022 8:55 PM

He's insanely talented but his discography sucks. A lot of his skills were wasted on subpar material. A few singles stand out like "What Do You Want From Me?" (though Mandela effect had me mistake that for Pink) and "Ghost Town." Sadly the Nile Rodgers collaboration was forgettable. DL only hates him because he's a successful openly (and flamingly) gay celebrity who has actual talent. That makes them insecure.

by Anonymousreply 45July 13, 2022 9:07 PM

He's oily. I don't hate him as such, but as a substitute for Fred I do. I also blame Brian and Roger. They wanted to keep their careers so bad that they couldn't understand that they were a part of a whole that was never to exist again. Someone else said it best - they became their own tribute band. Lambert is a cheap Freddie caricature. B&M seem to love caricaturing Freddie - remember also the shitty movie.

by Anonymousreply 46July 26, 2022 11:25 PM

I don't know who he is so don't have any thoughts and don't much care.

by Anonymousreply 47July 26, 2022 11:29 PM

OP it's easy. I just ignore Adam Lambert and Queen. Easy peasy.

by Anonymousreply 48July 26, 2022 11:29 PM

Over sings, has shitty songs, and can’t come up with his own image. No imagination.

by Anonymousreply 49July 26, 2022 11:31 PM

Imagine that. DL trashes another out gay man. Who would have thought.

by Anonymousreply 50July 27, 2022 12:04 AM

R44, Agreed until final sentence!

Dr. May has several other irons in the fire, from photography to astrophysics to solo music.

by Anonymousreply 51July 27, 2022 4:45 AM

The band members obviously love having Adam touring with them. But I wish Adam would concentrate on his solo career.

Btw WHET Danny Gokey ?

by Anonymousreply 52July 27, 2022 4:55 AM

True, R51, May seems to be a busy guy, with the astronomy, photography, social media, and saving the badgers. But none of those other activities feed his ego the way performing does, and I bet that ego needs a LOT of feeding!

But yeah, if he and Roger want to keep the band going because they like performing, then I don't think they could find a better fit than Adam. Good voice, good charismatic performer, outrageously gay persona. They're fun to watch, and that's what really matters.

by Anonymousreply 53July 27, 2022 5:39 AM

R46 Thank you. Exactly. You put it so much more eloquently than I did.

by Anonymousreply 56July 27, 2022 6:30 PM

He has a nice voice, but I never liked his songs.

by Anonymousreply 57July 27, 2022 9:26 PM

R68, If you want to believe his AI days PR "bisexual" story, whatever!

I've been a REAL fan since Idol, have met him, been hugged several times by him, attended more concerts than you could imagine.

Adam is and always has been 100% gay.

This old Frau ain't no fool.

BTW, YOUR supporting proof would be?

by Anonymousreply 69July 28, 2022 1:49 PM

I hung out with his insufferable brother recently and he did nothing but rant about how Adam was professionally trained and more talented than Freddie Mercury. I nearly punched him in the face.

by Anonymousreply 70November 4, 2022 7:52 AM

I enjoyed him on American Idol and wanted him to win. I was never buying into that "little engine that could" narrative the show built around Kris Allen's "growth" and "artistry." Allen was likable and sounded pleasant, and that was it.

As was the case with more than a few Idol winners, once the season was over and he was trying to establish himself as someone who did more than sing interesting covers of famous hits cut down to one and a half minutes, Lambert didn't seem as special. I thought his first album was dreck.

I If Queen fans (I'm not one) go to hear the famous hits and find him an acceptable vocal substitute for Freddie Mercury, then it works out well for all concerned. But Lambert didn't have the career with original material that a lot of people predicted for him in 2009. I mean, he was on the Rolling Stone cover despite being the second-place finisher, and then he got the final performance slot of a star-studded lineup at the 2009 AMAs. That was some kind of push.

by Anonymousreply 71November 4, 2022 8:16 AM

^True. He never lived up the the hype. I think he ignored a lot of good advice early on. He wanted to be a "pop star" and his voice deserved SO much more than that.

by Anonymousreply 72November 4, 2022 10:04 AM

R7 That's a good performance. Adam is tacky to this core but he's very talented and he's musical, which many singers are not.

by Anonymousreply 73November 4, 2022 10:14 AM

he's actually better than Mercury. a lot better , in fact

by Anonymousreply 74November 4, 2022 10:57 AM

Why is he so fucking FAT?????!!!!

He’s disgusting!!!

by Anonymousreply 75November 4, 2022 11:09 AM

OP, the biggest problem you seem to have with him is that he's overweight. He's talented and charismatic, a great performer. No, he is not Freddy Mercury. But Freddy's bandmates in Queen seem to like working with him, so there's that.

You sound petty and mean.

by Anonymousreply 76November 4, 2022 11:55 AM

Huge Queen fan from the early days and lucky enough to see them live in three occasions. Freddie grew into the role of front man. He was a bit awkward at the start. I loved the heavier side of Queen and though I saw them on The Hot Space tour that album sucked big time.

Adam Lambert makes no pretence of trying to be Freddie and often says as much on stage. All credit to him. I haven’t seen Queen live since Freddie died and feel John Deacon was right to call it a day when Freddie died.

For what it's worth I don’t like the new song Face it Alone. It’s sounds like a discarded Bond theme. Brian and Roger continuing to milk the memory. Hmm.

by Anonymousreply 77November 4, 2022 11:57 AM

R74 LOL! Neil is that you?

by Anonymousreply 78November 4, 2022 11:59 AM

[quote] But none of those other activities feed his ego the way performing does, and I bet that ego needs a LOT of feeding!

Brian chose music over astronomy way before fame, it's not an ego thing, it's a love of music.

I agree with the above poster, Adam is more of a Vegas showman.

by Anonymousreply 79November 4, 2022 1:42 PM

Nothing wrong with Vegas, baby!

by Anonymousreply 80November 4, 2022 3:00 PM

R76 Thank you for the response, the diagnosis, and the education!

by Anonymousreply 81November 4, 2022 5:50 PM

"he's actually better than Mercury. a lot better "

He really is a better singer, but Mercury wrote the majority of the band's hits, and was a more charismatic front man. So Mercery is the greater talent, by far.

by Anonymousreply 82November 4, 2022 7:56 PM

Yes, there is a huge chasm between creating and imitating.

by Anonymousreply 83November 4, 2022 11:10 PM

Adam Lambert a better singer than Mercury? I'm stunned, but appreciate that people have their own opinions.

by Anonymousreply 84November 5, 2022 12:37 AM

He has a good voice, but he's basically a con-man.

by Anonymousreply 85November 5, 2022 1:58 AM

I don't know much about Lambert, but this girl I went to High School with (a singer, not famous) is one of his BFFs from way back, and I can tell you, that fame didn't make him ditch his unfamous LA friends, so in light of that? He seems like a solid guy.

by Anonymousreply 86November 5, 2022 2:04 AM

I loved him at the Queen's Jubilee.
